Excellent video, I followed some of your advice, in my case I do not use a USB capture device because I have the LG TV with root, I transmit the content through PicCap directly to the Hyperion, this helps me since I have less hardware to connect and I do not have content restrictions or hdmi inputs.

Great video! I do want to mention that if you want to use HDR content you have to tick the HDR to SDR Tone Mapping box, this corrects the washed out image you get when using HDR10 content. I'm using a PS5/Series X and Apple TV all with HDR on and only when I tick the box I get the right colors. Without it the LEDs are washed out. Another thing to keep into mind when using HDR content is to use smoothing. Took me some time, but with the hardware you recommend I finally have everything set up brilliantly on my OLED TV.

Thanks for the awesome guide! This is definitely on my list of projects to do in the new house that were building. We need to upgrade from 55" 4k to a 65" 4k TV after were moved in, so I can't do this quite yet. I didn't see in any other guides that Hyperion integrates with HA, so I was pretty excited to see that!
Also, I wanted to mention that every time you said HDMI splitter, you were referring to an HDMI switch. A splitter will split one input to multiple outputs. A switch will let you switch between multiple inputs for one output. Its a pretty common thing to mix up (just read the Amazon reviews from people who ordered the wrong thing), just thought I'd let you know 👍

I think it's worth mentioning here, that you got lucky that this worked, connected directly to the RPi GPIO pin. The LED strip is expecting a 5V PWM data signal...and the RPi only provides 3.3V. Trying this setup with SK6812 RGBW LEDs... doesn't work, and apparently requires a high speed voltage converter, between the GPIO pin, and the LED strip data connection, to step up the voltage. I have yet to make mine function...but I'm exploring the voltage converter IC solution, soon.

A project that I would like to try myself!
However, we watch streaming platforms natively on the TV apps, so I assume this wouldn't get captured by the HDMI capture box :(.
So I would have to invest in a Roku 4K box or something, which have stumbling blocks of their own:
    - It would take up the final HDMI socket on my AV receiver (I don't like the thought of losing expansion capabilities, basically just for bias lighting)
    - An extra £40+
    - No ethernet (stop congesting my WiFi!)

If your LED strips don't light up as mine did, check your control signal (green cable). Using WS2812 strips (don't know about other standards), the signal is *one-way*! Unlike 5V and Ground, it is important on which side you connect it to your RPi. I assume the direction is indicated on the strip itself by arrows for most products. If not, don't hesitate to try out, you can't damage it by doing so.

I've been searching online and found something about HyperHDR not supporting the drivers needed for the SK6812 but for me it makes no sense as it was working just fine on v16 (I updated to v19).

Few inputs from me after I've managed to make it work:
    - I've used HyperBian instead of HyperHDR on as my capture card was not found by any means in HyperHDR on RaspOS.
    - I'm using Raspberry Pi 4 and there was a problem not present in pi zero of Hyperion having no permissions to read input from led pin resulting in led output constantly shutting down. Solved it by running service as root.

My 2 cents... you dont't need a 4 capture card, the whole point of the capture card is to send the video to the Raspberry Pi, NOT to the screen. Also you talk about a HDMI SPLITTER when it is actually a HDMI SWITCHER. What you should be doing, is using a 4K Splitter to send 4K video to the capture card and the monitor, no video needs to go from the capture card to the monitor. the video from the splitter to the 1080p capture card, the capture card usb to the PRi.
the other side of the splitter goes to the screen. You can still use a HDMI Switch to choose which video source is sent to the splitter.
Sorry if I'm completely wrong, greate video.

You could do it that way if you wanted, not the way I would do it but you could if you wanted too, the end result is the same.
Also ypu talk about PRi when it is actually RPi ;)
Haha just messing with you, thanks!

Is there a way to do this without adding the chromecast? We have a smart TV, TCL Google TV to be exact, and we can’t find a way to do this where it syncs with the tv app content. is there a way to do this at all? we do have an HDMI input port but not an output

Great tutorial. Very easy to follow and the links to all parts makes it easy as 1-2-3 to create the shopping list :). How does this work with Dolby Vision content? Will the capture card still pass the signal on so I can view the content but without the ambient light working, or will the content not show at all? I guess finding a capture card with DV support will either be hard or expensive since DV has a license cost associated to its use.

Many sources on the web, recommend using a 3.3V to 5V level shifter between the rpi's gpio 18 header and the led strip. This video however does not use any. Do you know if it is required?

Yea... The suggested Capture Card proved to be a Dud for me in the long-term use as after a while it kept spazzing out on a fairly regular basis needing a restart from the Pi ( off which it was driving Power from ). I've since replaced it with the absolutely miniscule and by HyperHDR suggested Rullz MS2109 model and it appears to be working a lot more reliable.

One question: if I do not want to use home assistant, would it possible to plug everything into a smart outlet controllable by Google assistant, and if so do all settings/states stay the way they were or every time you plug it back in you'll have to set it to display TV colors and not some solid or rainbow mode?

anyway, what I would like to know if possible is, as you all know that smart TVs nowadays have got all the apps built in e.g. Amazon, youtube, plex, etc. is it possible to make this work with built in apps? is it possible to output from TV using HDMI and feed it back to the capture card? Not sure if anyone else has wondered / asked this before. If anyone knows please chime in. Cheers

If I put in a USB3 cable into the Pi4 while hooked up to the power supply or when I connect it to the GPIO connections. Any thoughts on that?

Hi All. Slight update to this. When using the Raspberry Pi Imager, you will need to click the little gear on the bottom right and enter your Username and Password to use on the Pi as the security options have changed and the pi/raspberry user/pass no longer works. You're Welcome. :)
P.S. You can enter details for SSH and WiFi in here also. Much easier.

Hi there. Have found this video and just finished my build. The raspberry and the LEDs work fine. But I cannot see my AppleTV signal. I am using the same capture device as shown in this video. Do I have to know something more for using AppleTV here? Do I need a different capture device? Is it important to which USB-Port I connect the capture device if I use a pi3 B+? Or is the capture device broken even if its brand new? Appreciate your help. Thank you.
    Great video by the way.
UPDATE: It was the capture card. Ordered a second one (same model) and now it works. But sometimes the colors are a little bit off. Perhaps you can make a video about color correction on Hyperion.

Hello 👋 I’m planing to make it with a RaspberryPi 4 that I got out from my helium mining rig and making sure I get everything correctly!
My first question is can I use a 12v LED strip? I would really like to use the WS2815 because of the back up channel so when 1 LED get burned it can still work correctly.
My second question is if it can be done how should I go about connecting it since the raspberryPi is a 5V
Last question is, my RaspberryPi has a heat sink connected to another board with a LoRa technology so how would I be able to make the fan work without the other board?

I have a room under construction where I shall be having ceiling strips, TV wall strips, Smart ceiling lights, Bed back LED lighting among others.
How to create an immersive in-sync experience with all these lights?
