  • Are Electric Cars the future? Well in my experience with my Porsche Taycan I'd say no, however all the EVangelists out there who are part of the EV Cult say I bought the wrong car and should have bought a Tesla. Undoubtably the EV with the best infrastructure, but what's a Tesla like to drive? Well this one should please the hard core EVangelists as I traded in my Porsche Taycan All Electric Car for a Tesla Model Y Dual Motor. I have gone to the dark side and joined Elon Musks Clan who think it's all for The Greater Good!

Most insurance companies are at a loss as to how to acturialise EV's. Not only are the technologies vastly different with different makes and models, the insurance industry has little historical data on which to base their acturial models. For traditional cars, there is 120 years of history, so modelling is easier and more "robust".
Some insurers are getting it though, and premius are falling.
Tesla anticipated the insurance issue, and now offers insurance in some USA states, and will eventually offer this globally (though this is a minefield as every precinct/region is governed by different legislation).
What will happen is that as more data is collected that proves EV's better safety and reliability, the data will underpin more accurate acturial analysis, and premiums will fall.

Why do you think that? All those cameras would have saved me a couple of shunts when I was driving for a living. Plus pedestrian safety features, and the acceleration to avoid situations ICE couldn't. Plus 'driver assistance', because everyone occasionally has a lapse in concentration.
Seems like a huge improvement in safety to me, and that SHOULD lead to lower premiums. But knowing insurance companies, it won't 😊

Just watched this video, you kept saying about the regen braking, if you watch the video again where the sales guy from charging station was running through things with you, he actually showed you the braking part. You are correct about the build quality and that is the biggest downside to the vehicle, however, I want an EV that works and gets me from A to B in the best way, great charging network and the functionality of the vehicles is absolutely fabulous. I’ve a friend who got a brand new Audi recently, after waiting 8-9months, it actually broke down on Day 1 and he’s been in a Skoda ever since, for the last couple of months……… that wouldn’t happen with a Tesla.

As a little additional comment where you talk about Tesla selling the tech to the other companies, where your basic complaint it more about the cheapness of the build quality, I liken them to being a bit on the agricultural side of things but compared to your Taycan, the Model Y is probably a good £20k cheaper and imagine what could be done if that was put into the materials used.

    1) you can easily fit dash displays for behind the wheel that integrate with the cars computer seamlessly, i have one in my Model 3 and it looks factory.
    2) White interior is more premium feeling inside.
    3) touching the screen is not dangerous in a self driving car, it even corrected your driving on a short trip because you wandered over the line.
    4) you didn't try Autopilot and FSD.
    5) perceived build quality isnt great but its the safest EV on the road apparently.
    6) Tesla's tech and software is its IP, thats what sets them apart from the competition.
    7) Tesla is leading the way in efficiency and their cars are significantly lower weight than other equivalent EVs.
    8) regen can be fully adjusted although i cant think why anyone wouldn't want full regen as its easier on brake disks and saves more energy compared to having it turned off.

"Mr musk? Rishi Sunak here. About these badly made, poorly engineered, fire prone death traps you want to sell to gullible narcissists for exorbitant sums of money. I'm sorry, but they're just too dangerous. If you cut corners by simply gluing a cheap iPad knock-off to the scuttle instead of installing a proper dashboard, then people will be obliged to take their eyes off the road and get a migraine looking at the over-bright screen whilst they cycle through multiple difficult to understand menus and sub menus, and sub, sub, sub menus in desperate attempt to stop the indicators from making fart noises and have a crash. Then our overpaid and underworked NHS staff will have to interrupt their tick tock dance video routines and tend to their injuries. And then the wreckage of their hateful fugly model 3s will burst into flames and the fire brigade will have to waste upwards of 3 weeks trying to keep the blaze under control. Then the insurance company will go bankrupt from all the claims, and other insurance providers will have to increase premiums by 4 grand. People won't be stupid enough to pay that, so they'll buy a proper petrol or diesel car instead and we won't be able to get to net zero or control where the plebs drive to anymore. So I'm afraid we can't possibly issue a safety certificate that allows you to sell your worthless junk in the UK"
"Am I a joke to you?"
"Well actually Elon, yes you are. Just not a particularly funny one"
"How about if I pay you a shit load of money equal to the shocking amounts of tax payers money you waste every year fighting non existing climate change into your Swiss account?"
"Oh alright then. As soon as the funds clear, I'll email the safety certificate over to you. Just do me a favour first. Send a model s plaid over to Mr Starmer at the labour party for me will you? If he's burnt alive when the battery inevitably goes into thermal runaway and the car goes up in smoke, then the Tories might just be able to remain in government at the next election."
"Sorry, I can't give him one. I can't possibly be seen to be offering bribes to a bunch of antisemites who all aught to be in jail. I can sell you one at cost price though, and then you can pass it on to him yourself."
"Fine, I'll send you a cheque for £400 out of the profits once all the ulez fines have been paid."
"Is that incompetent moron still masquerading as the London mayor?"

Compared to my 22 year old Monte Carlo, the features in the Tesla are like night and day and enjoy allot of them. Of course the new Gas vehicles have similar features and are outstanding.
Yes, the Tesla has very little in buttons and dials like a conventional vehicle would have. Most everything is done through the center Display, or I use Voice control. The Tesla is basically a I call a very fast Golf Cart and also call it my Computer on Wheels. I just put it in gear and go. First time with a vehicle with built in Navigation and use this all the time. This feature is really cool.
If you need all the buttons and dials, this vehicle is not for you. At first I didn't like this method of operation with very little buttons and stalks on the steering wheel. But I got used to not having them.
Note: I still have my 22 year old Monte Carlo and operates very well and enjoy it. I use the vehicle for doing my dirty errand jobs. So if you like Gas vehicles, stick with them. The choice is yours and not the Governments. My choice to try an EV was only my own but also kept my Gas vehicle.

The regen braking? You honestly would get used to it in a couple of days. You don't take your foot completely off, think of it like your mum's old sewing machine. You can also put your steering wheel into sport mode, which makes it stiffer, reducing that sensitivity.

    • @djtaylorutube
      @djtaylorutube 11 месяцев назад +1

Not with a Tesla. Why? Because of the integration of the satnav with the Supercharger infrastructure. The car will route to a nearby Supercharger if it determines that the car needs it, now if the person driving chooses to ignore all the in car information, ignore the energy consumption data, the journey prediction, the routing to Superchargers then they deserve to end up with a flat battery on the side of the road but the integration and presentation in advance of supercharge availability (and pricing!) is so tight, that's the information that is NOT available to other EV's.
Tesla single stack infrastructure gives it that road trip edge. Tesla software knows where the cars are, knows that the planned journeys are, knows in advance of where the planned journey stops need to be. They have all the data and stats on where Supercharger capacity needs to be and statistically model availability. That update is coming in the next software release. Other car satnavs know about the location of chargers but that's it, now how busy they are, nor whether they're likely to be available upon arrival.
This is as far ahead as Google maps traffic data. Google didn't give Android to the world because they're good guys! No, it was for the data collection. The initiative to collect movement of mobile phone location and use that for traffic modelling is what drives the data for Google Maps Traffic, Tesla is doing the same for charging infrastructure, nobody else is doing that.
I'm trying not to sound like a fanboy but it's about the consideration put forward with the technology that interests me, this is why Tesla (like them or not) are like iPhone here whereas every other car maker just shrugs and says "There's a car init?" and "you can charge it up somewhere over there *waves hands vaguely in some random direction*".
I can jump in the car right now and plot in Rome, Madrid, Lisbon, Barcelona...wherever and the route will be planned with Superchargers with a 99.9% reliability of uptime and head off. No issue, try that in others, they may plan the route but with what certainty of availability or charging? Anyone's guess! People will say "oh but you can use ABetterRoutePlanner" yes you can but that still doesn't provide the same degree of integration.
It's a different experience. Now are there other cars with a better ride, better materials etc.? Sure but then ask what the car needs to do, for us it just needs to work, as a car, doing car stuff and without stress. It also happens to be ranked right at the top in the Euro NCAP safety ratings.
So summary, range anxiety? Nope! :)

This car does not have Sport mode because it is not a Performance model. Only Performance model gets Sport and Chill, but the speed faster than Sport is Ludicrous mode which is expected to be available in the upcoming Model 3 Ludicrous model which will replace the current Model 3 Performance. The speed faster than Ludicrous is Plaid which is available in Model X and S, fastest production family car. Regan brake you talked about in this video, you can reduce it in the setting. If you're coming from a Taycan, I'd rather recommend a refreshed and fast version of the Model S which is more comparable in size (in reality, way bigger boot than Taycan's) and price than Model Y. You will also get 2 screens like in normal cars in the Model S with a nice screen behind the steering wheel and it is way faster than Model Y Performance and the ride quality is far superior with air suspension. Also your question in the video about how does Tesla see the car in front of the another car which is in front of your car, Tesla's sensors can actually see as far as 250m (about 820 feet) which is a huge safety feature if there is a collision ahead, autopilot also knows before you can even see. You complained so much about the build quality, remember Model 3 and Model Y are cheap entry levels in Tesla's line up. These two are cheap version saloon and suv compared to a lot more expensive Model S and Model X. Tesla is not going to give you very expensive feeling cabin in their entry level cars with huge price tag and make them more unaffordable for most buyers which kill the purpose of Tesla's mission statement that is to ""accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy" and Tesla can't do it with only a handful of rich people that spend £100k plus on a car. Also, why would Tesla sell their software to other manufactures when Tesla sells more EV than another others and way ahead of them in both revenue, production numbers, popularity, profits etc? It just doesn't make sense. You should go for a Tesla drive in the Model S Plaid.

I had this to be fair on an ICE car when a bin bag flew in front of the car on a windy day but not on a motorway. The brakes came on so hard that I looked under the car as I thought we had grounded on a concrete block. We also had the same effect when the car detected a tall weed on the drive when trying to back out. This is just these automatic AI systems on most cars nowadays which are completely clueless as to context as we find out when we ring any company automated support lines and pray we reach a human being. I have a feeling old cars without all this electornic automation will be at a premium. Teslas always look very cheap and nasty like an upscaled 4 wheel Robin Reliant and just show how inherently expensive these electric cars are to make and even the basic model is an eye watering £42,000 and does not exactly ooze quality. I parked next to a tesla a few weeks ago and both rear light clusters were chock full of condensation which was not exactly encouraging.

This "phantom braking" does happen - but through OTA software updates, is less and less frequent. In the 4 years I have had my Model-3, I have had only three instances of "phantom braking" - the last time was over a year ago. On one of these occasions I worked out that a truck passing on a bridge over my road may have been the cause. My road crested a small hill, and the bridge appeared to be at my level as I approached. As a "human" (and familiar with the road) I knew it was a bridge, and not a level crossing - but the car obviously saw a truck passing at "eye level".
Remember... people LOVE to publish these sorts of events in an effort to dismiss Tesla - but you are unlikely to see the many hundreds of thousands of times Tesla has AVOIDED an accident. (There are some youtube videos that show this - but avoiding accidents isn't all blood and gore - which is why it's never in the news).

As a TESLA owner, I was interested to see your take on your TESLA test drive. I think you gave a mainly objective report - giving appropriate credit where it was due, but justifiably criticizing other, perhaps more questionable, features.
    Just three points:
    1) I appreciate not everyone, you included, likes the one-pedal, regenerative braking. The braking can be easily adjusted - indeed the person giving you a quick walk-through of the controls before your test drive highlighted the creep, roll and hold options on the Pedals & Steering sub-menu.
    2) One of your main takeaways - that TESLA should market and/or license their software to other car manufacturers - on the face of it seems like a good idea. As a software engineer who has worked in all economic sectors of the UK, including company sizes ranging from family run businesses to some of the world's largest multinational corporations, let me tell you that this is a total non-starter. The TESLA software is utterly dependent on the hardware of TESLA cars - for example, major functions of the software will be totally dependent on the number and positioning of the cameras. Unless other manufacturers build their EVs to meet TESLA specifications in their entirety there will be close to 0% compatibility (and in reality, their products will then become little more than rebadged TESLAs).
So, why doesn't TESLA amend their software to meld it to other manufacturer's requirements? Well, this is another non-starter - once software goes beyond a certain level of complexity (which will certainly be the case here) it is way easier to build software from scratch rather than attempting to edit/amend existing systems.
So why doesn't TESLA use the in-house expertise it has gained and setup a software company under the TESLA or Elon Musk umbrella and offer bespoke EV car software solutions to the other manufacturers? Maybe this is more feasible, but would TESLA really want to share/reveal its expertise to rival manufacturers, and would other manufacturers want their products to be reliant on outside interests? Just imagine the legal bods getting their claws into those conundrums!
    3) A lot of the comments here are obviously added by people with preconceived prejudices or, worse still, for whatever reason, axes to grind. They clearly have no firsthand experience of EVs and are simply parroting other, factually incorrect, comments they've read elsewhere made by people who clearly haven't even a basic understanding of EVs. For anyone viewing you video for your opinions (and there's nothing wrong with those) I'd just highlight something: This is the Internet and RUclips video comments should carry the warning, LET THE READER BEWARE.

So glad you enjoyed the test drive but 1 hour is nowhere near long enough to find out why we all say (and will continue to say) you should have bought a Tesla! Your biggest gripe was in fact one of the best aspects of driving a real EV, one pedal driving! Tom who showed you the controls at the beginning (4:44) showed you the three modes Creep, Roll and hold, the first two are very similar to a conventional automatic and the third is the one you used called Hold, in this mode you must use the throttle just like a volume control, you never just let off the throttle to slow down, you simply dial in using it how fast you want to go, once you get used to this you will never want to use any other mode! When you come up to a junction, you just gently release the throttle to gradually slow down until you stop at the junction, all without needing to touch the brake pedal.
Your other comment was the steering, you had it in sport mode which is indeed very direct, I have mine in comfort and have never had reason to change it.
Finally interior quality, when it comes out in January do get a test drive in the new Highland Model 3 which has much higher quality materials and will give you something else to complain about, no indicator stalk!

I still cannot understand how so many modern cars are allowed to have so many of the standard controls on a touch screen. It makes the law about not being allowed to touch your phone a joke. If Mr Plod witnessed you scrolling through your phone whilst driving, you would be getting a ticket. From what the instructor was saying at the start of the video, you even have to scroll through to adjust simple things like the heater controls. And to do that you need to take your eyes off of the road. I guess that is why cars like these need some kind of corrective steering and automatic collision avoidance built in!
Maybe I am just too old fashioned, but I think I will stick with conventional controls that i can feel and operate without taking my eyes off of the road. I am too used to dashboards having controls on them, along with speedometers and such. For me the Tesla dash just looks very bland, but that of course is just personal taste.

Looking down at the screen (which you seldom actually need to do) is perfectly safe - the car looks after you. Trust me... I have had a few occasions where I was distracted and the car kept watch and corrected its speed, position and orientation with other road users. It sound a piercing alert when it corrects something and its reactions are way faster than humans. It is by far the world's safest car - not only because it actively avoids accidents but also for its crash-safety - in all regulatory crash tests, Tesla has scored higher than ANY other vehicle.

Sorry I’m getting 240miles for £20.00 on my diesel or 300miles for the same cost as the Tesla £25.00, so to cap the Tesla cost me double to finance, than my existing car, cost more per mile charging at home vs diesel, car insurance just checked £187 for my diesel and £2684 for my Tesla, and to put the icing on the cake only 5000 per year mileage, that’s about 14miles per day 😂 a Tesla will cost me 3x as much to run than my dirty diesel, IT ISNT FOR THE GREATER GOOD. Hi - not sure why they quoted you £25 for 220 miles - Octopus energy do an “intelligent octopus” tariff which gives you 6 hours over night at 7.5p per KwH. I get approx 240 miles for £5 using that tariff. I have to say you get great mileage out of your diesel - with average supermarket prices of £1.60 per litre then £20 gets you 12.5 litres of diesel approx 2.75 gallons - that equates to over 85 MPG for your diesel that is fantastic, what car is it?
My calculations come out different to yours when I researched mine and they hold up in real terms. I do over 18k miles per year in my electric car and when I worked it out against my previous petrol that did 40 MPG I get a saving of over £2.5k per year electricity against what it cost me in petrol for same mileage - even factoring in using superchargers on the occasions I do long journeys which in fairness are more expensive to charge it.

In the 4 years I've had my Tesla I have never had to "wait" for a charger. Tesla will help plan your journey and will tell you how many charging ports are occupied or free at ALL Tesla superchargers long before you get to them. And because Tesla superchargers are so common, if one station is "full", the car will automatically indicate alternatives, and will auto-navigate to them if you want it to.
Now... this is only true of Tesla... Other EV's don't have their own charging stations and have no idea of how busy these stations are. Also... non-Tesla charging stations are often out-of-service (data shows a 43% downtime on average) while Tesla charging stations (the data shows) have an up-time of 99.8%.
But my MAIN "fuel station" is my home. I simply plug in at night and have enough charge the following day. Do you have your own petrol station in your back yard - or do you have to spend time driving to one?
So... when are you going to get your Tesla?

It only takes a day to get used to the regen braking. You don't take your foot off the accelerator, you just reduce pressure to slow down. You can really drive with only one pedal. It just takes a small amount of skill at first, then it's instinctive. The most dangerous thing about driving a Tesla is the mad desire to kick the accelerator and feel that amazing pick up. Controls are easy if you remember you can voice. Want to raise the temp? "Make it warmer". If you want defrost, "Turn on defrost". The fun factor can't be matched by any other car. Farts or Light shows, voice controlled internet searches. No other car is a Tesla.

Ummm... you clearly have never driven or been in a Tesla. The car has very advanced driver-assist and crash-avoidance systems. This car is 100% aware of its surroundings all the time.

    • @brunosmith6925
      @brunosmith6925 11 месяцев назад

@@chrissmith2114 I agree with you about the dangers of human drivers. I too ride large bikes and have been doing so for 40 years. Never come off (touch wood) and have managed to avoid many potential accidents. While Tesla's driver assistance and safety technologies are far advanced and way superior to all others, Tesla makes it absolutely clear that the driver must be attentive and is in control. They stress this constantly. So I am not suggesting that this technology is either a substitute for human failings, nor that it excuses bad driving, but that it does what is says on the tin - driver ASSISTANCE. In the 4 years I have been driving my Model-3, there have been several instances when the car reacted positively - and I believe that in some of them, had I not had this assistance, a crash would have occurred. Conversely, I have had three "phantom braking" events (all in the first 2 years - an issue Tesla seems to have sorted via over-the-air updates).
Again - there is usually little need to look at the screen when driving, and it does take some getting used to how Tesla's features work, but the really important controls are also on the steering wheel. Many (most) other features can be voice-commanded and i control the entretainment, indicators and cabin temperature using voice commands. I sometimes use voice to navigate, like over-riding the car's intended charging destination.
So... an occasional glance at the screen (when necessary) can be done with a high degree of "comfort" that the car's driver assist systems are paying 100% attention as well, and will react positively if a precarious situation arises while you are looking at the screen. I emphasise - this does NOT excuse the driver from being accountable at all times... all I am saying is that minor distractions in any other car are far more risky - and until you drive a Tesla (for a couple of weeks at least) it's difficult to appreciate how beneficial its advanced systems are -for both the driver and the passengers and other road users.
