The Alex Smith "Deep Ball" Myth

  • Many people believe in the myth of Alex Smith being unable to throw the deep ball. They say he can't throw the ball more than 20 yards down the field. In today's day and age where people have become obsessed with high powered offenses, big plays, and fantasy football statistics, quarterbacks like Alex Smith are overlooked. When you have a good running game and a solid defense (aka TEAM football), throwing the ball down field all game isn't necessary. Joe Montana wasn't a big time deep ball thrower yet some consider him to be the greatest QB of all time. Why? Because fantasy football wasn't around in the 1980's. Alex Smith knows how to not lose football games by making the correct reads, getting his playmakers the ball, and controlling the game... but if his team needs him to start slinging the ball late in the 4th quarter, he is more than capable of doing that. Chiefs fans have learned what Smith can do when he's forced to throw down field after their defense got shredded by Peyton Manning and Phillip Rivers.
    Alex Smith can throw deep when he has to, or when he chooses. This video proves it. His former offensive coordinator Norv Turner once said "Alex Smith throws the best deep ball I have ever coached." Critics, doubters, and even 49ers fans and Chiefs fans who doubt Smith's ability to throw down field need to realize that Smith plays a style of quarterbacking that won Montana 4 super bowls in the 1980's before fantasy football and Madden video games were invented.... and THAT style wins games.
    Don't be worried, Chiefs fans. When the playoffs come, you have a QB who can take shots down field if you're trailing in the second half. Just play some defense and Smith will win you games.

    Alex Smith has been sadly under rated and I'm glad he got a fresh start, even though as a niner fan, I miss him terribly. No problem, I root for him as a Chiefs player. I still root for 9er's but when we play Chief's my heart is torn, I would so love to see the Chief take the Superbowl, not only because it's a come from behind team, but because I really want to see Alex get his ring!

    Nice video. You know what throw you should try to add? The one in Seattle in 2011, to Crabtree, that set up the game-winning field goal. The last time the Niners won there.
    Pressure right in his face on that one, and like three defenders around Crabtree. Couldn't even step into the throw. It was all arm.
    Thanks for the compilation!

    Good video, I think Alex Smith is an underrated quarterback and can make deep passes, yes, he doesn't have the Joe Flacco arm but he can still make throws downfield when he NEEDS TO, problem is they have him throw short passes it works for them, he makes smart decisions, and doesn't make stupid throws, can't hate on him for that. Also other than Dwayne Bowe & Kelce their receivers don't strike any fear.

      Montana was viewed the same way as Smith until he won those SBs. Some teams like the Broncos and Packers and Pats have lacked a consistant run game so they need to throw the ball 40 or more times a game to win. Which equals padded stats. Meanwhile these teams like the Chiefs, and Seahawks, only throw the ball 40 times because they are playing catch up. If wrs get quick seperation Smith would lob it up all day. However thats hard to do without speed. The chiefs have swithed this offseason to have 90% speed on the outside so we shall see

    If Nolan wasn't an idiot and made him play with a shoulder injury, Alex would still be making these throws no problem. Out of college, Alex had better accuracy and arm strength than Aaron Rodgers. Would you believe that ten years later into their careers? Definitely not but being drafted into the worst team the NFL has ever seen takes a toll on the player. It's crazy how Alex is still around after getting his shit kicked season after season.

      He is definitely on his way to Canton but I don't think he has earned his ticket just yet. But indeed, he was drafted into the 8th best team in the league and got to sit behind Favre for two seasons. With the luxury he had, he better be a Hall of Famer, honestly. He's been struggling as of late though, I wonder what's going on with him.

    And I disagree that it works well for them. There have been a lot of games (first Denver game comes to mind) where the Chiefs controlled the entire game, and were beat by their inability to score. They have to open up the pass game a bit more. The defense just play right on the line and the chiefs still check it down and run. It is infuriating.

      ***** McGlynn gives me nightmares. Fisher spends half of his time helping him out as the inside pressure is a priority at that point. It's not at all shocking the moment the OL and WR's aren't awful there is an occasional pass downfield from Alex.

  • @GoUtes92
    @GoUtes92 8 лет назад +2

    I think that it is likely that this myth is based on the confusion between the quarterback's accuracy and the strength of his arm. Any NFL quarterback can throw a 40 yard pass. Frankly, a high school quarterback can throw a 40 yard pass. It's not as simple as the distance. It's the accuracy and timing of the throw. If your offense is getting five yards at a time, run or pass, your offense will score before they even see a third down. Granted, Alex Smith isn't necessarily known for improvisation plays but he's very efficient and he can run any offense. If you're a coach and you can't figure out which quarterback is right for your system, you can always do the safe thing and add Alex Smith.

    All I got to say is the 9ers kept him as a starter for How many Years? He made the Catch III come true and even So wasn't wen allowed to play in the SB even though he was a part of that Team Getting there! Yeah he's Elite and over turned KC around and the D failed in that playoff game. He's Among some of the Best QB's. Critics will say anything to get ratings and also why isn't TeBow playing he sure is way better than any other back ups even starters. It's a money game. Plus if Alex Smith wasn't that Good or made a difference in the game people wouldn't talk about him. Why??? Cuz he's a QB to be fearful Off!!!

  • @bobbyjubafm7801
    @bobbyjubafm7801 9 лет назад +4

    There is absolutely nothing wrong with Alex's play style. (This is coming from a Chiefs fan,) he makes smart decisions, throws it short to wear the defense out and take time off the clock. Clearly he can throw deep when he needs/wants to. In KC, Avery is about our only good vertical threat but coach Reid doesn't call many vertical routes, then again, he doesn't use good plays half the time. We have Dwayne Bowe who is a big strong receiver who is meant to catch slant patterns, curl routes, etc. But Reid usually doesn't have Bowe doing that. The sad thing is, is that we don't have a line in KC or any good receiver besides Travis Kelce to throw to. Alex has no time to throw the ball anyways so he could have, Megatron, Dez Bryant, AJ Green, and Josh Gordon and he still couldn't get the ball out because the offensive line sucks.. I really like Alex's play style and he has a great attitude toward things. He doesn't beat you by having a cannon for an arm. He beats you by making smarter decisions and tiring out your defense. I hope Alex finishes his career out strong as I believe he has about 4 or so good years left, by then I hope he has a line because he does amazing when he has 3-4 seconds to actually throw a ball.

    • @JordonTheo
      @JordonTheo 9 лет назад

      Well something has to give. The defense just stacks the box every play, and the Chiefs either run despite, or throw a check down despite. They have to open up a vertical game, because if I have to watch them try to pound it at a stacked box too many more times I'll go nuts.

  • @brutuscassius1647
    @brutuscassius1647 9 лет назад

    Of course he can chuck the ball downfield; no one would make it to the NFL as a QB if they couldn't, let alone as a starter on a competitive team with a smart coach. But anyone can see his velocity is lacking, and that's what makes it harder for him to complete passes more than 15 yards downfield on a consistent basis against NFL DB's and linebackers; they're just too quick & instinctive, and if that ball's not zipped in there, they're gonna make a play on it more often than not. I like Alex Smith, a team like the Chiefs can definitely win with him. But there's no sense in denying that taking shots downfield is something that has to be done wisely & sparingly with him.

      Theunratedr2 Actually, you and the guy agreeing with you are pretty much dead wrong. He hurt his shoulder in 2007 and got the first surgery. He had to have a follow-up before 2008.
      Davis and Battle were the only two receivers in that highlight video that were on the 49ers in 2006 and the first three games of 2007 (before the injury). Crabtree & Ginn were later, as were some of the others.
      Also, any catch with a white-stripe on the pants leg was 2009 or later. Which rules out most of the Davis catches being in 2006/2007.

      James Hicks Yeah I'm a diehard 49ers fan. I knew smith was doomed when harbaugh came in. The minute a team gets a new coach they immediately start releasing guys and bringing in there own players. The trade of alex smith was the dumbest move the 49ers have made as of late. I'd trade Kaepernick in a minute to get smith back. That guys is nothing more than an over glorified runner. If smith is just a game manager I'd take that all day. He put up relatively the same numbers as wilson and kaepernick only his may have been slightly better than the two. He also had over 300yds of total offense in the playoff game against the saints. The chiefs will be alright you guys got a legit quarterback. I just think this kaepernick thing may prove to be our undoing.

    He doesn't have a "weak" arm. But it takes an elite arm to throw with velocity, over and over in a game. Obviously this video shows him throwing long balls, but that's typically when he winds up and hurls it here and there. And I think that's the reason every coach he's ever had, hides his "throwing capability" by keeping his throws limited to mid tier level throws(15-20 yards or less). And also explains why the Chiefs who have TALENTED receivers, don't have a TD reception all year. So yes, Alex can throw a deep ball when needed. And his arm isn't "weak", but he does lack consistent velocity needed to make the tough throws over and over, hence why he gets little respect in the league. My two cents from observation.

      Haha! Smith is a average bum. Excuses excuses...8 pro bowlers on his team and he's still average. Still doesn't have a passing TD to a receiver. He's a game managing check down qb. He'd be a back up in Oakland. And now 3 head coaches 2 of whom have super bowl experience still don't trust his deep ball. Sorry to hurt your feelings about this very good facilitator...but he's not a deep ball play maker. He's played for 8 offensive coordinators and they ALL don't wan t him throwing deep ball.....Keep convincing yourself Mr slightly above average has a strong arm but everyone else in real world including dozens of actual nfl coaches think otherwise.

      ***** you can keep making as many excuses as you'd like for him. Pass protection, lack of receivers,.. Blah blah. No passing TD to receivers all year. 8 different coordinators all don't want him throwing the deep ball. Funny how Kap took over his spot, and he throws deep!? Haha. Alex Smith the Facilitator.

      Or if you really want imperial data.... Look up David Carr at profootballreference.com.... He was Texans first pick in 2002. Sacked a record 76 times. Worst pass protection EVER. He had arm strength to still fling that ball 60 yards down the field, OVER and OVER without having to wind up. And that's the difference between a good arm, and elite arm. But go ahead, and keep making excuses for his "arm strength". I actually think you believe your own bullshit. And I'd call you an idiot, but I just keep letting you talk out your ass, and I don't have to call you a single name. ;-)

      +Not Telling. Kap is an athletic freak, and better than the guy he replaced. And if you look at Kaps stat line... Of 15/24, 114yds, 1TD, 151 rush yds, 1 rush td, NO INT,... anyone can clearly see it wasn't cause Kap played bad. 49ers as a whole team are failing. But for the record... Kap has more passing tds in one game than Alex ALL YEAR. Haha. Enough said.

      +Not Telling... How old are you? 17?..18?........ Passing TD to a receiver. Kap the guy who replaced your beloved average bum, has more passing TDs to a receiver in one game than your average bum has all year. And Kap has been sacked more often since you keep crying about Pass Protection.... Haha. Next time proof read your comments, I think my foot is smarter than you. And if you really want something to think about..... If Smith and Kaepernick were both free agents this year, only one would be sought out after. And hate to break your average ass heart, it wouldn't be Smith. Now go learn some basic information, proof read your comments, and keep rooting for the most average QB in the league, other wise known as a great game manager. The average ass Alex Smith. How many superbowls has he been to? Who replaced him and the team did better? Hahahaha.

    Him and Tom Brady probably throw the best lob passes in the league.

      well you can't call an NFL All Star a "bust" ….. that just doesn't make any sense to call someone a bust when they've made the pro bowl aka the NFL All Star game. Alex Smith made the pro bowl last year, therefore he's an NFL All Star and not a bust. Keep in mind that last year's pro bowl was NOT the nfc vs afc, so Alex Smith was selected to be a pro bowl quarterback OVER colin kaepernick.
