I believe a lot of Christian music has become "man-centered". Also, why are Christian singers afraid to mention the name of Jesus in their songs? It's always 'Him' and 'You', but nobody wants to say the name Jesus (Yeshua).
Or they'll mention God, but they have a problem saying Jesus. It's been decades now that a sitcom, TV drama or big screen movie will have a prayer scence, but they'll never say, "in Jesus's name."
The bands citizens and Judah sing songs that name Jesus christ as the way and sing words from scripture. 2 bands I've been looking for for a long time. Maybe you'll enjoy them too
I went to a concert with Jonathan McRenalds and their was an opening act before he came out. In the middle of the act the lights on the block went off. Everyone was just standing there… waiting. He finally came out and repenting that he was consider canceling but God convicted him and reminded him that it “ain’t about you”! He stood on a chair with his guitar and the voices WORSHIPPED. No lights, gimmicks, drama just pure worship. God moved!
That's right! I also don't need 5 hours of music, 3 hours of begging for money, 2 hour announcements, and 30 minute sermons. I came for sound doctrine to be preached about God's word and the preaching of salvation!
To be honest, some of the gospel music make me feel like the days I was at the club dropping it like it's hot. It's the spirit behind the music today. A lot not all is becoming so worldly.
Agreed! The so called Gospel songs that use the tempo/beat/melody of an old school R&B song set to Christian lyrics may have been created with the idea to reach the unsaved, but I don't believe the two should be mixed. There are those who would argue that some of today's best loved hymns use a melody from an old secular/saloon song, and why ban the use today? I left secular music behind and there are enough reminders of it (as background music in stores and restaurants), without using it in Gospel music too. Just my two pesos.
Used to be a CCM artist and I live in the Nashville area. I had a pastor here once (who was also tied in to the music business) who said something very compelling: "Humans were made to worship, not to be worshipped. When we get that backwards, it messes us up". It's amazing how quickly people start to worship you when you get a little bit of fame or spotlight. Even within a local church.
It is true, something, I am sad to say, that I have witnessed for myself. Pride and vanity in ourselves should have no place in our hearts individually, much less amid our congregations. Our focus of praise and worship should always be worshipful submission to God for who He is, and thanksgiving for all that He has done, is doing, and will do! He is above ALL things!
Kirk Franklin's spoken introduction to the live recorded performance of “Something about the Name Jesus” on the Rance Allen Group’s The Live Experience was spot on: “We’re living in a day and time when being politically correct is popular. We’re living in a day and time when everybody says the name God, but nobody wants to say the name Jesus. We don’t want to offend the Muslims, we don’t want to offend the Jews, we don’t want to offend the Arabs, and so therefore we crucify Him [again/afresh?]. But I want you to know that there will come a time when every Muslim, when every Buddhist, when every Jew will have to get down on their knees and have to confess that at the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow.”
This post should have over 1,000 likes, because this is the heart of the whole conversation. Everything Kirk Franklin said was spot-on. Nobody wants to be honest and admit that they don't want people to sing about Jesus; they just want to hear music to shake their bottoms to. No one wants to glorify Christ, or honor God, they just want to put on a performance to gratify their emotions, not glorify God. Please be honest, and get it right.
Kirk is going OFF the edge with his dance moves, appearing with rappers on his concerts, not to mention how the church attire is these days, with even men🙄
@@tanyadixon7980 Post should've also included the fact the man has been seen wearing a dress and still supporting the world. Celebrities will say and do anything to appease the crowd/fans lukewarm christians and non believers as well not that there's much of a difference.
That's a good thought with great intentions but how do you know the ppl who made those songs from the hymn book weren't also flawed?.....I'm not making excuses for modern Christian music btw...
All people are flawed I’m not implying that but what I’m saying is I rather stay true to the old fashioned way of Praise and Worship music. All are entitled to their own music of their preference and how they wish to Praise God. I’m just not a fan of today’s Praise & Worship music! Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion. Be Bless!
@@hopecrochet687 I agree, most of the time I don't watch videos or any performances, I just buy the song that I feel brings me closer to God and forget about the singer themselves, too many ppl are full of themselves these days
Many gospel singers now a days lack anointing. Without anointing, the praise and worship session turns into a concert. It seems worshipers are seeking fame rather than God's presence and direction. That's why healing and deliverance ain't taking place in our churches, because the Holy Spirit isn't present. Thanks for this video brother. God bless us all 🙏
I got tired of all the extra screaming in some songs. I start listening to other Musicians but Africa have the BEST PRAISE AND WORSHIP SONGS. Love it!💖
Hands down Africa has the best America has lost their way too many of them really wanna be celebrities and are too thrilled to be in that circle there are very few you still could find who still seem to be geniune though
You are so right and the keep repeating to get the people hype and a while bunch of noise...and asking the people to shout a raise their hand and a whole sort of stuff
African gospel music are often linked to biblically unsound churches and the private lives of some of their musicians are as messy if not more messy than what we see in the US
Back in the late 1980's and early mid 90's, I used to love to go to Gospel concerts in churches and some Gospel auditoriums and praise the Lord. Today, I don't even watch them on TV. I can't even tell what they are all about anymore because they look, sound and emulate every negative image that's in the world. I've never seen so much make-up( women and men), weaves, wigs, cleavage, huge spider web eye lashes, front pants prints, sagging below the waist from the so-called "Christian men" in all my life and this is how today's Gospel artists worship the Lord?!
Aoia. I am very uncomfortable with the way people dress today. Im a tutu of 26, mother of 9, & wife of 1. My mindset is to glorify Jesus and be an example inside and out. I make mistakes but I repent. Everything that's acceptable in clothing and expression today, among believers is wishy washy
I can’t remember the last time I watch The Dove Awards because of this! The thought of That Sunday Best show was “horrifying” that it took a very long time for me to watch but once I did, I saw why and steered away from it. Carnality is very costly and I’m not sure that’s generally understood.
@20:05 My Pastor must approve every song that is sung. If it's not about the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, he won't approve it. The words have priority over the music.
Your pastor is wise. My pastor went to the same college as the Bethel college thus agrees with me but allows all of their copyrighted music anyhow. Maybe its the fact that the overall message is nice. I personally don't want to support or encourage that which is a wolf in sheeps clothing.
I agree, the words should be of sound doctrine and I have also learned that the music does matter also. I have heard some say that only the words matter to justify the secular spirit of their music.
@@annamartin3489 Yes, true. Music does matter. My comment more so referenced the music might "sound" like gospel or Christian but if the lyrics don't line up, it won't be approved.
Man, you are preaching to and at the choir, both literally and figuratively. As a church musician of many years, this is a HUGE concern of mine. It's gotta be about our Holy and Righteous God, Ruler of the universe, our precious Savior and Lord!!! Contemporary christian music, no matter the melanin content of the congregation, is going sideways in many ways. Thank you sir for your insightful and courageous talk.
I haven't attended church services since the pandemic. During this time and before actually, I decided to read the Bible in study form. I came to realize, much of what we do wrong in our Christian behaviors has some cultural influences. For me personally, as I studied continually, it has become clearer, that I must examine mine own relationship with God scripturally. My grandmother used to say everyone must seek their own soul salvation. I didn't know her expression was biblical, but found it, in the scriptures, and much more. Thank you for your insightful commentary.
While it's true that the modern church is very flawed, we are told in Hebrews not to forsake the assembling of ourselves. It is vital as believers that we congregate with fellow Christians
Have you considered trying a different church? They can vary a lot. I know that being in fellowship with other Christians, and spending time together worshipping God and making music is important to fully live in Christ. At its best, we strengthen each other in our walk with Christ. There have been times in my life when I rarely went to church for one reason or another, and that wasn't really good for me, though it didn't stop me worshipping the Lord.
@STAIND12300 only if they are like-minded. You can come together with those within your household. Assembly doesn't mean church. God also stated he does not dwell in building made by man. There's a whole lots of sin lies corruptions etc in the building. If I have my spiritual and understanding with God personally, I don't need no one else.
“Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.” James 4:4 KJV
I was literally having a conversation with my daughter today about how I so rarely listen to "Gospel" music because much of it is so close to secular music and oftentimes not biblically sound. And bam! This video pops up for me to watch. Look at God reinforcing messages and making clear convictions. Praise the Lord! And thank you for sharing.
@@mauricewinston2578 Not much of any really. I sing in church and will sing those songs to myself throughout the week. I love old-school hymns because the words speak to my soul. Sometimes I get nostalgic and listen to 60's era soul, 70's disco, or 80's anything. But those times are few and far between. If I want to listen to something, I actually prefer listening to preaching. Alistair Begg, R.C. Sproul, John MacArthur, Voddie Baucham...
I was struggling with this. I was listening to the Kirk Franklin song with r kelly and Mary j and then I was thinking like hold up look what r kelly has done and now I know it’s not real gospel.
The Bible has given us 3 GENRES to worship God. PSALMS, HYMNS, AND SPIRITUAL SONGS. IF we can be true to that order in the worship service and RESET THE STANDARD, it would be a great blessing !
Wow! Now that is something to follow. Follow the Word. You cannot go wrong with that. Simple!! We need to magnify His name. He is worthy to be praised, not man. When I am at church and singing during praise and worship. I am closing my eyes and envisioning myself standing before the "The Most High God" and thanking Him for all His many blessings and letting Him know that I am specifically speaking to Him and Him only. Without a doubt. This contemporary gospel may sound good to the ear, but sadly it is not specific enough to me.
I’ll never forget being at practice one day and the worship leader telling us that he wanted us to all be smiling during this one part of the song so that the crowd knew the Holy Spirit was moving…Needless to say I pretty much packed my drum sticks and headed down the road 😂
I remember when the gospel music took a big turn. It was in the 90s. I picked up my granddaughter for church . I had the radio playing. She got in and began listening. Then she said , " mommom I am telling the pastor on you, you listening to the regular music !" She could no longer tell the difference.
I noticed the "shift" too; but for me I noticed it around 1985; prior to that, I would play my Gospel LP's, tapes, and CD's and wear them out! I've been enjoying Southern Gospel lately; its messages I've noticed are often so "blatantly Gospel" and scripturally sound.
Wow!! For your granddaughter to say that. I’ve noticed the change over the last several years and it’s getting further away from true worship of Jesus. I’m finding myself listening to a selected few over and over…
I’m Green and Burgundy Hymnal raised and when I need some encouragement I reach back for “What A Friend We Have In Jesus”, or “The Blood” These and songs like them tap into the presence of my Father and are what my souls needs.
Thank you brother for the content. Having been a Gospel Minister of Music for over 35 years I have seen it all. I've seen Gospel music change from The Caravans to Walter Hawkins & The Hawkins Family to The Choir age, Mississippi Mass Choir, Georgia Mass Choir, Thompson Community Singers, to Kirk Franklin etc. I've seen it all! I grew up in the church and have been there my entire life, and we were always taught there should be a difference between the world and the church. The church have allowed alot of things to make its way into the church and it was allowed because church found out that it fills the pews. People love the fact that they can hear the same type of beat , groove and dancing they see at the club, it kinda eases the guilt. To sum it up, the bible reaches us to Be not CONFORMED to this world, but be TRANSFORMED by the renewing of your mind. This is why every church should have a capable Minister of Music and this person and the Pastor must have a good relationship. Remember, There is a very thin line between praise and performance. Praise God loves, Performance takes the focus off of God and puts its on you.
Ad a pastor I am not responsible for filling up seats and pews, thays the Holy Spirits function. My purpose is to preach and teach the Word of Truth as written by 40 Holy Spirit filled writers. And I preach and teach the only Holy Bible there is, the KJB and I preach it Rightly Divided per 2 Tim 2:15
I remember when I was younger learning about certain singers/rappers that didn't make it in "the industry" but decided to break into gospel because there was more opportunity to be heard. To me, that's a major component to why this music sounds like clubs music. Because it is! They just changed some of the words to songs they already wrote
This is spot on. I'm not in a choir and I don't lead worship but this convicted me because my lifestyle lately has been too too worldly. Not Godly like it use to be. I'm repenting in my heart. I don't want to be like the world. I don't want to be a enemy of God by being friendly with the world. I'm grateful for this video
Fame, fortune and face book like will not give us eternal life. Flesh and blood cannot inherit life. It only through Jesus Christ . His the way the truth and the life. So blessings upon you and your family
I mean if that person is in the Spirit , then that’s different but if it’s for performance and they’re trying to put on a show and it’s so self centered , then that’s a problem !
I’m glad this topic is discussed. I remember seeing a video of Tye Tribbett exposing the gospel music industry. All these record labels are sold out to the Devil. I rather stick to old school gospel or Worship music that correlates with the Bible.
Growing up in a Baptist church, I have seen (and heard) the evolution of Black gospel music.I remember when Kirk Franklin became popular and my pastor spoke vehemently against the choirs singing any of his songs in church. As a child, I wanted to hear the choir “jam” and show out. He (my pastor at the time) finally relented and it became a show. It was more about who was singing rather to Whom we were singing about. I say ‘we’ because I was right there in the choir stand with my tambourine showing out. Today, now that I am saved and my theology has changed, I still listen to gospel music and sometimes appreciate it for what it is, but I love old hymns so much more. There is something about Blessed Assurance or any of the theologically sound hymnals written 100s of years ago.
Whats the difference between Kirk Franklin and a Negro spiritual? None of them are God's words and shouldn't be used for worship. God gave is worship song called "Psalms".
@@eve3363 the difference is the words spoken and the worship that is given to God and the inspiration of the holy spirit doesn't matter whether he's quoting psalms directly or not i think anyway. That's really interesting that you think that tho never heard anyone say that before. Respectfully of course ✌🏾
@@joshuaejovi3722 Same can be said for Kirk Franklin. So a Negro spiritual is more close to God but a Kirk Franklin song isn't? A 30 year old worship leader trying to reach the youth by playing Gospel rap isn't OK but a traditional Gospel song is? Where are the lies drawn? And we as mankind can't draw these lines because we're all full of the same sin. That's what Pslams is the only way to go. There's no confusion as we know it comes from God. No news to debate it.
As a musician, I want to give God my best. It's me appreciating the fact that I'm even allowed to worship to God, not showing out for the congregation.
Exactly! I sing for him, and it's for him. Not for the congregation. Lord use me. If the song I sing brings the spirit of the Lord, I will sing all by myself. If I'm a room with just me and the preacher the pews, I will still sing if nobody is there. If it brings Glory to God, I'm doing it. Don't let these kinds of opinions discourage your praise if it's about Jesus!
A big preacher in Chicago who had a large church. whom has passed away. Once told the Church in a sermon (Milton Brunson) said he had preach for years , Before got saved. And said just because people, can preach, sing Play an instrument, recite the word of God does mean their saved! It was an awakening for me as a teen. So if there shouting all over the church doesn’t mean God is moving them. 😳
Thank you. I've often put my focus on learning the latest songs and what others may want to sing, but you've quickly adjusted my thinking on choosing WORSHIP music for our choir. It should strictly be about uplifting Jesus & praising God. Thank you so much. I just needed a "tune-up" and I got the word.
Years ago, Gospel music started getting mixed with worldly music and the door was open, the enemy was in. I actually got asked to leave the choir when I wouldn't sing a song that I knew was theologically incorrect. And I knew what biblical knowledge the director possess so I wasn't offended at all. I'm only impressed by music that exalts Jesus, that's when I worship, dealing with the church nowadays is difficult because I truly wonder what this thing is anymore.
We have forgotten the most important thing. We are all here to do a work for God. Our songs should glorify God. The word says spiritual hymns, etc.. Spiritual is the key word. We should praise God. The place where we praise God is a sanctuary. The people are the church.
I agree with all comments..they gospels of today..are not of Jesus Christ..the mention of Jesus in gospel.let you feel the Holy Spirit anointing..but the artists today..looking for self fame..that's not of Almighty God Jesus
And how are you so sure that God is not pleased?🤔And to you it’s “fleshy” but you don’t know these peoples hearts and if that’s their genuine way of praising God.
I picked up a guitar because I was depressed and started learning to play blues. God asked me if I thought he wanted me to use this ability to worship the world, or Him. It was a wake up. Pray for discernment
Brother, I used to be in various worship teams. And you know what? I was a lukewarm weak Christian who didn't know scripture, nor was I truly saved. I only did it cause I was good at playing several instruments, and it was an easy way to pick up church girls. I was glorifying myself and showing off for years. But now that I've truly been saved and born again, I'm disgusted by my behavior as a teen worship leader.
Thank the LORD, you listened to GOD, tugging on your heart, to show you the truth and you repented! Such a beautiful testimony! Hallelujah! 😆🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 Stay strong in the LORD, my brother! Continue encouraging others to Christ. 📖🙏🏽💯✊🏾💖🙌🏽🛐⛪⛪⛪💗💗💗 🎵🎼🎶🎹🎶🎙️🎼🎸🎶🥁
I find black gospel very comforting at its core. When I was at a low place it was these beautiful songs where the Holy Spirit met me and soothed my heart. Yes some songs are a bit dramatic and long, but sometimes it’s these songs that seem to express the pain of life and the joy of knowing Jesus who makes the hard days bearable. The Holy Spirit can reach people in many ways, not just prim and proper hymns sung in 30 minute services.🌿🌷🌸
Amen, stop judging and comparing how one group worship from the other. Corey seems to be the end all and know all of everything, the bible spoke about people like him.Be careful Corey. I like most of his videos but the undertone for me is the judging of others. Correction is good, explaining the truth in the bible is better but we have to be careful with the way we put it over. Remember when at school and some teachers compare one student against the other, this can break a person’s spirit. God call us to UPLIFT, NOT PULL DOWN. Amen?
I couldn't have said it better. When I'm feeling down, I listen to Gospel music. With tears and hands up in the air, worshipping the Lord thru the storm.
This is more of an important issue than most think. Like everything, we need to get in the Word and ask the Lord to give us His solution. Glory to His Name.
My father pastored for many years and he said the problems always started in either the choir or the kitchen in the church. I've been in church all my life and this statement have proven true so many times. I think it is more entertainment than worship in gospel music.
THE TRUE MESSAGE OF THE WORD IS THROUGH THE BLOODLINE ..ABRAM ON DOWN...PEOPLE CAN TAKE THAT BLUEPRINT AND MAKE IT THEIR OWN..BUT IT'S NOT THE SAME.ALL WE SEEING IS THE GENTILE VERSION OF THE GOSPEL. AND THAT MY FRIEND IS ALL WATER DOWN VERSION !
I think we should be on one accord when we come together. That is why I think Churches shouldn't have a lead Singer. I think we should all be singing together as one body.
White churches do this a lot? Don't they? Well, it's a great idea. Some groups and choirs have so many leads that no one singer gets much rotation. This wouldn't be true with a small choir with lead singers, but it could be with a medium or big choir(like the choirs shown in the video: The MS Mass Choir and The Walter Hawkins choir*). Maybe it's best for small choirs to ALWAYS go the hymnal route; whereas, bigger choirs could do both indiscriminately. When there are only a few lead singers, people can get the big head very easily. That's when a singer thinks they are somebody and wants to neglect duty whenever they feel like it or tension can develop due to not being noticed enough or not being in it for the right reasons. However, when a choir can do without any one lead, it makes the choir better. *Most of those leads I don't even know
That only works when everyone knows the song so well that no leadership is necessary. Many songs, even hymns, need someone to lead (not overpower) the congregation or else it gets real sloppy. I have an idea that I hasn't been used to my knowledge: how about 'embedding' the singers in the congregation instead of having them in front on a platform? Each could have their own mic, sing and be heard, but without becoming the focus of the congregation.
God led me to an amazing gospel artist named Sean Ware. I made the decision to delete ALL my secular music a few years ago and I admit, it was not an easy thing to do. God was refining my spirit to do away with the secular music and I am so thankful that Sean's music is so SCRIPTURE rich! It elevates my worship time and praise. The music is joyful and in these dark days, we need the joy of the Lord to keep us on fire for the Kingdom! God bless everyone!
I went 11 years not listening to circular music in the 90's, what a wonderful experience. But i started listening again afterwards, It didn't dilute my spirit, I still love Gospel music. Even though some of the Gospel music today seems to be missing something. I mostly listen to Worship with William McDowell, CeCe Winans, Israel Houghton etc.
God bless you for having the courage to address this sensitive issue. I have been Minister of Music/Organist for over 20 years..there is a difference between true ministry and performance…if what we do in anyway takes away from Jesus Christ, then we need to check ourselves…
I agree with you. The music was too loud in two churches attended. It was drowning out the voices of the choir and congregation. In both churches, I asked could they turn it down so we could hear the words. I was ignored. The music is important but it should not take over to point where the singing is not understood or heard. Those churches did not use screens that showed the lyrics. So when I brought a visitor, they did not understand the words to some songs because of the loud music. I told my visitors the words but again loud music might have drowned out what I said.
Why don't you just find another church? Why keep supporting an unholy church that won't give proper praise to Christ & GOD? You continue to tithe to a church that is disrespectful.
The song by Casting Crowns is Who Am I. It’s one of my all-time favorite Christian songs. I love contemporary Christian music and Casting Crowns is one of my fav groups. I also loved their songs Beautiful Savior and Praise You in this Storm.
Under universal company. When u sign contracts, you do what they say, they own you. You don't rush the anointing. The Ruach is not talking all the time.
I was in a worship band for years and I always felt like I was entertaining. It bothered me more and more until I finally stopped because what I did in the hopes of ushering in the presence of God felt more like entertaining. It really bothered me. Personal conviction. I also had a problem with alot of the music we did. It was unbiblical and coming out of apostate churches.
Me too. I love singing praises to God. Started seeing the pastors manipulating the people and choir through it. I stepped down from that to study the word first.
@@joshipp761 thanks. It's been a difficult decision cuz I loved the people there and as many times I expressed my concern they just didn't hear me or understand. There definitely is a weirdness when I see them around town. I do have peace knowing I did the right thing. Thanks again. 😊
✝️"Then Adonai said: “Because these people approach me with empty words, and the honor they bestow on me is mere lip-service; while in fact they have distanced their hearts from me, and their ‘fear of me’ is just a mitzvah of human origin" Yesha 'yahu (Isa) 29:13
I saw this as a preteen and middle school in the late 2000s. I switched to contemporary and noticed the music is headed that way as well. Now I really really love hymns. Reading them, studying them alongside my bible and they are so theologically rich. Singing them makes me feel like I'm bonding with God.
I love you dear brother! I am a Christian music instrumentalist who records to spread the love of Jesus. God uses me for the ministry and I am composing for the glory of God. I take no credit. I am so grateful for your message. You are so right. God bless you and I love you in spirit.
I’ve noticed a lot of drifting in dress, body language and lyrics among contemporary Christian artists. I go to a church where we sing a lot of hymns because there’s a lot of bible in them. And we’re very selective about contemporary songs we sing, based on bible. It feels like normal people start singing and the congregation joins in. I used to go to a church with fog machines and flashing light. There was some showmanship on the stage, so I kept my eyes closed. The worship made me stay there. I loved it. I never saw the worship team members in Bible Studies and I rarely saw them sitting to hear the message on Sundays. They sat in the green room and watched on a screen right beside the sanctuary. Even though there’s less showmanship where we are now, it’s hard for me because it’s not hyping or evoking emotions or entertaining. I have to get that out of my system sadly. I want authentic and genuine worship, but it’s hard to be purged of the entertainment and emotionalism.
wooow; I had that same experience too=[ it was at a cool church~ (with the style that we've (now) identified as: "Fog machines & skinny jeans!") ~but Yeah, I noticed too! that the people in the Band, that did primarily popular (& honestly great *sounding) Hillsong songs... ? But they (the few I saw) in the Band .._afyer the show_ I saw a few times that they werent also paying attention to the sermon, like the rest of us. =/ even in cellphones. Doing What? (I personaly cant stand when people have out their devises during church service.) I DONT CARE about the technology today excuse; IT'S DISTRACTING. ... But Anyway~ =] yeah I have experienced those things you mentioned. =] See ya up in Heaven soon sister! ^ ^*
I'm leary of any "gospel" musician, choir singer/director, evangelist, prophet, or any other title or position-holding person and even just lay person who can regularly and purposely skip out on bible study, prayer meeting, commmunion, or any other sacred services where "the flesh" won't be seen and celebrated by those in the congregation. I've seen people like this in EVERY church and denomination I've been in and it sickens me how they can miss midweek services constantly but suddenly show up on Sunday full of the fire and ready to go. I'd say what they have is more of strange fire than Holy Ghost fire.
Waaaay to much entertainment in churches these days. Most churches are seeker friendly and the goal is to make people feel as comfortable as possible the way the seeker sees fit. And Church nowadays is big business. This why you rarely hear teachings or messages on repentance, heaven, hell, or God's judgment. It has to be all about a fun atmosphere to keep people engage. Sad. We gotta come back to Bible
Thank you, Brother, for this episode. It's so sad how many worship services are about entertaining people and not truly worshipping God. Worship is not supposed to be about us and how it makes us feel. It's about congregational worship, praising our Holy, sovereign God.
I’m an old school youth, I love the deep, Godly music. Sometimes mainstream gospel but definitely the hymns. Those people actually seemed to have a connection with God in the way their words came. All that concert craziness is JUST FOR SHOW! I use to be into gospel rap when a friend in my church did it but I realized it was the same as this, and so was the personal lifestyle in many of the rappers. One of the most hidden features of gospel rap and some of the other gospel that is displayed in this video is the melody of the beat, look at how some of the musicians or artists are reacting to it. Some of these people are Twerking, Some of them just act crazy like they are at a hip-hop concert, and the Lord is not glorified. It makes the real believer want to shake his head.
I really hate that term “worship experience” which many churches are using. Worship is for and towards the Lord, and how we feel should have absolutely no bearing on our worship. Everything done in the church should be done in the spirit and not in the flesh. Great teaching brother. All music worldly and in Christian circles is going in the wrong direction. Both black and white. Drama is king not Christ.
You know....you are so right! Now that you said it, I have noticed more ministries are saying that. I went to a very popular church, that's truly spreading across the US, and when you walk in, they tell you, "this will an experience."
The whole movement can be attributed to Vatican 2 where the worship experience was the method used since the 1960s to eventually make the one world religion possible.
I used to play piano and organ for my church. I'm classically trained and my church was and still is about singing hymns. I pray that should God bless you with such gifts, use them and never feel ashamed of what God has blessed you with. Stay engaged in your talents even through college, grad school, any schooling. Don't abandon your gifts b/c as a witness, they are hard to recover if not being used. Great video.
Yes sir! I want my Gospel music to sound like the Upper Room like I'm patting my foot, crying slinging tears in gratefulness, like I'm up there with the Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth Himself. When I first got saved. There are three songs that brought me in the first song was i In the Midst of it All by Yolanda Adams. I had never heard of her. But a lady that I was riding with to work had the cassette tape and I immediately went out and bought it within two or three days. I was unsaved, and then the next one was Let The Praise Begin by Fred Hammond. I heard that song my ears set up on my head I was unsaved and I hurried up and ordered it. And then the next song was by a man named Hezekiah Walker and The Love Fellowship choir the song was Let the Glory of the Lord Rest on Me. When I heard that I jumped up out my depressed dark room jumped on the bicycle and rolled up to the record store to get it. And then the Lord save me I can't say how long after work but He saved me in my bedroom on a one-on-one. Later on I got introduced to a lot of the current music and this was in the year of 2004 year 2005. But I started hearing some old school gospel music from the 70s some from the '60s and some further back than that. And when I heard it I immediately bought the CDs and my soul went NUTS! When I heard the Carlton Pearson CDs live at Azusa I ordered all of them I bought them all. I love the Old Time Gospel music. In the choir I used to be in, they laughed at me about me and my old music they grew up with it but they put a disdain on what they grew up in. But I told them for me, a totally unchurched person to love this type of music when I heard them something in my soul exploded! For me to love this like this? This is a message to come on back to the old landmark. Which reminds me of this last testimony I'm going to share I was on the road trip from one state to another about a four four and a half almost five hour drive. I play the Old Landmark by Aretha Franklin off the Amazing Grace recording all the way down there I was shouting and hollering and speaking in tongues and stopping at gas stations and witnessing to the people. My soul was deeply profoundly concerned about the old landmark and what we going to do about the old landmark and we done messed up when we going to get back to the old Landmark I'm serious the Holy Ghost was on me that tough!
Thank you for shedding light because when a person did not grow up in the church you don’t necessarily know there’s a problem with the music. Also the pastor caves in to the young people saying the gospel is old therefore they introduce this entertaining music
I can't deal with today's Christian/Gospel music. I stick with the old school hymns and praise and worship by Maranatha Singers, Don Moen, Bob Fitts, Marty Nystrom, Graham Kendrick etc. Songs that are based strictly on Scriptures.
Yes true that I also noticed that the Hilsong of Darlene Zschech when she was the worship leader and of now is totally different and that's why I listen to listen to old gospel music
This is most beautiful. I'm so sorry that the church of today has abandoned the hymns. Hymns were the foundation that so many people have built their lives on.🙏
@@kelle0285 Im afraid it has so much so that modern singers cannot sing them. As for what they offer in their place words fail me they are absolutely disgusting. I dont know where music has gone and I dont want to know where CCM is going. Spot on my brutha!!! I get tired of hearing gospel groups and artists claiming for the world for Jesus Christ but always stealing the "spotlight" anything taking the focus off of Christ whether it be preaching, teaching, singing, evangelizing is wrong!!!
That's "Who Am I" by Casting Crowns. I was just listening to them today on Spotify. They are exceptional in particular as far as contemporary Christian music goes. They are definitely humble.
Smokey normal should not be on this list, because he makes anointed music, and the song that he song was not worldly. Sometimes when someone is feeling the song they will display emotions and he is singing skillfully. This man is using Smokey as an example and then turn around a say that he like rap gospel which is of the world, because God said be in the world but not of the world. I agree with everything that he's saying except when he used Smokey as an expel. Smokey Normal makes Godly songs and has made song such as I Need You now and other Godly music that had blessed many people. Some people take and don't know what they're talking about. On the other hand, I don't where they get this temporal and different jaundice s of music. It should all just be just gospel. Singing has nothing to do with our preference but its God's preference, and that's the problem, with the church because the world has crept into the church. Even Tye Tribute made a statement that all they want him to do is sing for entertainment and one day this came out of his own mouth, Why because its about money and entertainment, and back people have gotten comfortable because thy had education and positions Luke warm church age. A lot of time people in the choir are acting they way that they do because everything is in a choir but if you call for an all night prayer few will follow. On the other hand, the anointing is not emotions but you must know the difference. As a matter of face Smokey Norful hung out the worst gangs in the city where he was born. In other words people that God has done more for will sometimes have a greater praise that they express then someone that has been sheltered and haven't gone throw a hole lot. Also everyone is not on the same level in God and may know how to tap into the anointing whereby some people that haven't gone through that much may thank that it don't all of that.

I was a rapper. Gave that up. Started to listen to Christian rap and I couldnt tell the difference because of the beat. The lyrics were ok but didnt move me spiritually. I think its ok that we can celebrate Christ through music but we should keep in mind how it feels and looks.

I've just started listening to the audiobook "Pagan Christianity?: Exploring the Roots of Our Church Practices" and it addresses why we started some of the things like choirs and the seating, etc. Very interesting. I love gospel music but when I look back on my youth in a COGIC congregation, the music is all I remember. I don't remember anything that might have been taught about the Bible. I invited a friend to a non-denom Bible-teaching church I attended a few years ago. When I asked if she wanted to attend again, she said no. She loved that the pastor didn't preach but basically led a Bible teaching. Her problem was that there wasn't much music and what we had was too "dry" for her. Anyway, I came across this video at a good time. Thanks for your channel.
Hey my sister, I agree. I wasn't saying what Smokie was doing was wrong. I was pointing out the difference between different styles. It's some of the other stuff that crosses the line from expression to self promotion.
@@smartchristians 😆🤣She really went IN on you about Smokie. Maybe he’s her nephew or maybe he attends her church so she felt the need to take up for him…. Either way, that was funny. But actually, I agree with you sir. I don’t know why all these riffs are used in christian music (which by the way, comes from singers in the world) Christians did not do this in the olden days.. all this “scattin’” while lifting up Jesus. It seems like a lot of showboating. And as far as her saying that, “Smokie is singing from his heart”…Only God and Smokie knows whether he’ is singing from his heart into The Master. By the way, I agree with everything you said in this video.
Thanks for the courage to examine this subject. It's not judgmental to point out the truth, and the truth is, we got big problems in the church, both with music and doctrine.
Gospel music went wrong when it became a music industry. Anointing was lost awards were found. It's amazing that some people down secular music but yet most of your Christian music concerts looks like a secular concert. In some churches you can't tell if you're in a club or a church from all those flashing lights fog machines dark atmosphere.
I love your commentary. I’m 45 and I love gospel music old and new. This new music you have to know what you are listening too. Kirk Franklin, John P Kee, Andre Couch, and many more. It’s a lot of new artist music I listen too. I love all music. It’s works for me.
With anything, once it becomes a business, money becomes the motivation and becomes it’s what’s at stake. I came to know Jesus just before the CCM industry started blowing up. So much good music came out but behind the scenes, it became worldly.
As a Muslim I've always loved and respected the Christian church teaching, one thing I could never comprehend was the worldly music. Thanks for the confirmation
Most of them are living out there dreams of being a superstar performer under the guise of 'GOSPEL' music. And what is "gospel music" anyway? We all know who had the gift of music, Lucifer. And music was for The Most High. Now Prasie and Worship to Him and Him alone is the music that should be played. No performances, dancing like you're Michael Jackson, and dressing like you're going to the club. This is actually worse than the worldly stuff, because they know who they are and not trying to pretend. How are you going to copy a copy-cat(Lucifer) This is no different than what you see on MTV or BET.
Agreed. I sung as the leader for a praise team at a "Christian" school i attended. It was so messy because you have people who get jealous that they aren't singing this or that as much, people's compliments can make you prideful if you aren't girded up in the full armor of Jesus Christ, it becomes vain repetition and religious instead of genuine praise and giving glory to Jesus, and the songs become more about 'we wanna keep the attention of the other students in chapel'. Pride is behind it all!
@@JillCheese we aren't to dim our light because of haters as they will always exist no matter what we're involved in. What matters is that we remain humble in our gifts and talents as God gave them to us for His Glory....and if He gave them, He knows how to keep us from becoming prideful.
I see a lot of artist try to stay hip with the culture of today and end up leaning towards secular music. If your music has the anointing on it, then it would reach all ages.

Great word my brother! No doubt about it, church learders have allowed the world’s Philosophy, ideology, methodology and culture to influence how the church operate. Keep educating God’s people with the truth of God’s word. Stay strong in the Lord!
I'm glad someone pointed this out. I admit I move with gospel music, but I move as thr spirit moves me not the music itself. I personally know an artist who turned his life around for God but he use to be with Dope House Records and so I was scared that once he legitimately starts to put music out for the Lord how it would go. Well his music almost sounds the same, but I can see it in his face he truly loves the Lord and its for the Lord, but who makes the videos places images that remind you that he was part of the streets along with others. To me his message was look God saved someone like me he can save you to! But there are some artist that do gospel and have a show about their life with family and it makes you question is it all about show and money?
Maybe you could play a comparison clip of the Grammy awards and the dove awards shows side by side and see if there's a difference. Sadly, I would say there's very little if any difference.
6:20-6:50 as an organist/pianist of 43 years, this is precisely the reason I never get involved with bands in church, I don't care how much they're offering to pay, no amount of money is worth my sanity, it's just been me and my drummer for close to 16 years and there's never been one ounce of drama the entire time we've been ministering together, not only that, we get paid more because there's less band members for the church to pay
This is a good and important word!! Thank you for your obedience!!! We MUST stand on God’s word!!! There are spirits in whatever people do...so therefore those living in sexual immorality or other sins willingly is NOT in order. This brother is right.
Totally agree this type of thing has been going on for years and hasn't been properly dealt with in churches. I used to really love the more secular gospel before I was saved but since I was saved I prefer hymns because they are more doctrinally sound. I think churches should also consider how the musicians and singers live... do they love God, is their fruit that shows, obviously you can't know if someone is truly saved but their shouldn't be an obvious opposition to a true life in Christ. For instance the lead vocalist in the Walter Hawkins choir Yvette Flunder is a lesbian bishop. This should not be just because that person has talent.
Whewwww amen sis! I know people hate to here this, but as a believer, God's word is the final authority. We should not have been okay with Aretha switching between singing "gospel" and singing about lusting and stalking a man. Even before that, the Caravans did not have a lot of sound doctrine songs. I got hate for saying this, but Mary, Don't You Weep makes no sense. Like, why are you saying you'd tell Moses that Pharaoh's army drowned in the red sea. He was there🤦🏾♀️ It especially becomes false doctrine when Inez Andrews used to ad-lib that she could call on Mary. Mary is dead and in the presence of the Lord. You can't call on her🤦🏾♀️ Praise Jesus for saving you! God bless you and yours💝

Or they'll mention God, but they have a problem saying Jesus. It's been decades now that a sitcom, TV drama or big screen movie will have a prayer scence, but they'll never say, "in Jesus's name."

This is deep. May the spirit of pride never takes control of our lives. And may people never worship us but God Almighty alone.

1 Corinthians 4:1-2.

I enjoyed my LP IN THE 60's. I have Direct TV and listen to channel 828.

Id say 1995
Hallelujah! Amen!
Amen sister 💜 the Lord bless you and keep you!
I know nearly every song in those two hymnal books. Raised on them.
Now that I'm an adult...I have an understanding of these hymns I grew up with. Knowing practically every verse of each song.
Sound like the Evening Light and both Church of God Hymnals
Amen!
I remember when I was younger learning about certain singers/rappers that didn't make it in "the industry" but decided to break into gospel because there was more opportunity to be heard. To me, that's a major component to why this music sounds like clubs music. Because it is! They just changed some of the words to songs they already wrote
Actually, that's the opposite. When you are playing for The King, you are already at the top.
U know how much harder it is to be a gospel rapper? They dont curse, and stick to rapping about the word. Takes talent.
Thank God for these black singers!!!!

IT SHOULDN'T TAKE AN HOUR TO SING ""AMAZING GRACE.""
Rightttttttttttt!
Exactly
I mean if that person is in the Spirit , then that’s different but if it’s for performance and they’re trying to put on a show and it’s so self centered , then that’s a problem !
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Very well said
I’m glad this topic is discussed.

I feel the same
Hallelujah! I too love the hymns... there's a totally different ATMOSPHERE when you listen to hymns .
The church has lost its way because we have left our foundation and we have bought Babylon into the church and results are we’ve created another Jesus
Yes....another gospel and ultimately/unfortunately lead by another spirit...
The opposite of Jesus is Satan...hence the confusion in the church today.

So if there shouting all over the church doesn’t mean God is moving them. 😳
Thank you. I've often put my focus on learning the latest songs and what others may want to sing, but you've quickly adjusted my thinking on choosing WORSHIP music for our choir.
GOD bless you for taking your stand for holiness .
It was all set up from the start.
Finally someone who gets it & sees what is happening!!! God is not pleased with this fleshy worship.

And how are you so sure that God is not pleased?🤔And to you it’s “fleshy” but you don’t know these peoples hearts and if that’s their genuine way of praising God.

We always get it wrong when we make it about us, it's always about Him, and especially in worship.
I picked up a guitar because I was depressed and started learning to play blues. God asked me if I thought he wanted me to use this ability to worship the world, or Him. It was a wake up. Pray for discernment
God asked you???
Play the music to Psalms
Brother, I used to be in various worship teams. And you know what? I was a lukewarm weak Christian who didn't know scripture, nor was I truly saved. I only did it cause I was good at playing several instruments, and it was an easy way to pick up church girls. I was glorifying myself and showing off for years. But now that I've truly been saved and born again, I'm disgusted by my behavior as a teen worship leader.
All go through that process
Thank the LORD, you listened to GOD, tugging on your heart, to show you the truth and you repented! Such a beautiful testimony! Hallelujah! 😆🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽

Amen?
God and Jesus Christ should be our only comfort
I couldn't have said it better. When I'm feeling down, I listen to Gospel music. With tears and hands up in the air, worshipping the Lord thru the storm.
Amen!!
@@Faith-sh5jm Dear God PLEASE deliver us from performance prayers....
I think we should be on one accord when we come together. That is why I think Churches shouldn't have a lead Singer. I think we should all be singing together as one body.
Thats a cool Idea.
Old school.
100%
Yep! Kind like the old school scriptural hymns!
If u can't tell the difference......then it is secular music.

Good for you! Thankfully God touched you and allowed you to want a deeper relationship than just emotionalism from the flesh. Keep worshiping!!

Concern should be if you go to a church keeping the commandments
I'm leary of any "gospel" musician, choir singer/director, evangelist, prophet, or any other title or position-holding person and even just lay person who can regularly and purposely skip out on bible study, prayer meeting, commmunion, or any other sacred services where "the flesh" won't be seen and celebrated by those in the congregation. I've seen people like this in EVERY church and denomination I've been in and it sickens me how they can miss midweek services constantly but suddenly show up on Sunday full of the fire and ready to go. I'd say what they have is more of strange fire than Holy Ghost fire.

Hallelujah! Amen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You’re classically trained!! I wish I were, I bet you play so beautifully!!

I want my Gospel music to sound like the Upper Room like I'm patting my foot, crying slinging tears in gratefulness, like I'm up there with the Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth Himself.

In the Midst of it All by Yolanda Adams.

I agree not just because of the music look at the way they dress half naked.
Also everyone is not on the same level in God and may know how to tap into the anointing whereby some people that haven't gone through that much may thank that it don't all of that.
yup

God is the one who defines what is good and what is evil. As Creator of all existence, He is not under his own law and he can do as he pleases. Before trying to deconvert Christians, please learn what we actually believe and what the Bible says about God. Read it with a commentary or notes from a Bible scholar to understand what’s going on in the text. Much of what you’re saying is inaccurate.
I was a rapper. Gave that up. Started to listen to Christian rap and I couldnt tell the difference because of the beat. The lyrics were ok but didnt move me spiritually. I think its ok that we can celebrate Christ through music but we should keep in mind how it feels and looks.
Preacher, PREACH. I love that you've brought this to the forefront...for I keep wondering just what in the world is going on with Gospel music!

Why can't the men be still? They all are wearing tight pants and twisting on stage? Lord Jesus, help us!
@Diamondred4379 Joe Be still? Are you serious? The wiggle is part of the total package. Take away one aspect of it and the entertainment would not be complete. If they were still, do you think that it would be more Godly?
I just watched a RUclips clip where the late Lee Williams was in a church concert with the lead singer for the Williams brothers...the Williams brothers dude was jumping around carrying on gyrating acting pseudo spiritual and acting like Lee Williams should be jumping around hyping the crowd too because Lee wasn't jumping around and acting up I was glad Lee was acting mature and manly 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Affectations through the roof 🙄🤦🏾
Amen brother! Too often today's music is so loud that is you are singing in the congregation you can't even hear yourself.
Loud vs not loud is not the problem. It can be played loudly, but the music we have in it matters
I know some gospel singing is exaggerated; however, beautifully singing Amazing Grace. He's singing from his heart and I love it.
Hey my sister, I agree. I wasn't saying what Smokie was doing was wrong. I was pointing out the difference between different styles. It's some of the other stuff that crosses the line from expression to self promotion.
Don't ever sing the second line of Amazing Grace again
Great content! You are on point with your commentary. People in this area of gospel music no longer fear God nor respect His anointing!

I’ve thought this for years, thanks for putting it into words
These new "Gospel Musicians" are merely just entertainers.
My criteria: Gospel Music - should edify the spirit and bless the soul.👏🏿
@rkojak73 all religions are B.S.
How are you going to copy a copy-cat(Lucifer)
This is no different than what you see on MTV or BET.
BET was always hypocritical. They play songs about drugs and fornication all week then play amazing grace of Sunday.
@@MiguelDLewis Exactly!!
You've hit the nail on the head. The points you have covered have been on my mind allot over the past few years. 🙏🏽🎶🙏🏽
I think solos shouldn’t exist. Those people get too high on themselves. Corporate worship is better
That isn't true or fair to say of all soloist. Humility is required regardless of what role you serve in ministry.
I've noticed that too. It's sad
What are some musics that have anointing on them? I'm trying to build my collection.
@@Kelle0284 Music that spread and teach on the word of God especially music that worship him in praise.
@@tonystephens6469 Any particular artists?
@@Kelle0284 To be honest...I'm not really into gospel artist because it can sound too R/B-ish at times. I really don't know your taste so what I would do is explore some gospel online radio stations so you can get a feel of what sound you prefer.
Great word my brother! No doubt about it, church learders have allowed the world’s Philosophy, ideology, methodology and culture to influence how the church operate. Keep educating God’s people with the truth of God’s word. Stay strong in the Lord!
It would be very sad…. Lord Have Mercy! To hear, “Depart form me, I never knew you!”
I just may do this for myself! Thank you for this idea!
I agree that Gospel award shows are not a Praise unto God, it's a Show of Talent with Awards. God is not Pleased.
Personally I don't even understand why there are award giving ceremonies for believers...just sing for the Lord and let Him gift you. My thoughts!
Sad, but true. I have been so disappointed in Dove awards in recent yrs, stopped watching
@@l.e.a.h08 , Absolutely, why do we as Christians even need this?
Your first clip smokey I believe is genuine. He was on the streets but God had a calling. The fact that he takes his time singing is part of his gift.
Amen!
The devils music has infiltrated the church as well as how they dress & what they preach. 🤦🏽♀️
Wow! So incredibly intelligent, well-informed, and well-thought out.
@@JillCheese Well said! Praise Jesus!
