    2:00:00 Duncan's right, the shuttle arriving and Vader's line are new, the original it was simply the shot of Vader walking toward the camera sternly saying "bring my shuttle".

    One thing I have to geek out about, I got to ask Phil Tippett about the helicopter shot of the Tauntaun in what's obviously a live action plate of Norway...could not puzzle out how they did that pre-digital. He told me they projected the plate out the animation camera, because apparently you can do that. 😳 Then Dennis Muren figured out a motion control move that matched (on their 1970s "Dykstraflex" crane), and Phil stop motion animated the Tauntaun on a bluescreen set. Then it looks like they rotoscoped a shadow for it and comped it optically, with a wisp of fog drifting in front of it. How crazy is that?

    100% have to agree with Rich on the authentic feel of Han and Leia's romance right out of the gate. I completely buy into it and continue to be charmed by it after all these years. Yet another reason that makes this film the best of them all. It transcends the series and completely stands on its own. You get horror, adventure, romance, drama, suspense, mystery and humor. EMPIRE is the total package.

    RE: the AI conversation, I've been playing with Midjourney and other things too. I see a couple possibilities. A- Legislation limits AI use just to stop societal collapse. B- Studios cut artists completely out of the equation and make soulless movies with a button press. C- Independent creatives use AI tools as a force multiplier, and create epic projects that people actually want to see with minimal resources. D- all corporations go bankrupt because they've replaced us all with machines, and no one can buy their goods. I'm hoping for A and C. I believe people like us can probably take advantage of these tools to at least make it through a couple decades to retirement before things get really bad, but since the end goal is to replace all human labor as a whole, I think the outcry will be enough to keep jobs from being completely replaced. I also think some people will still yearn for human stories that machines can't tell with the same heart. It's more likely AI will transform our workflows than simply eradicate creativity. I find it really helpful in my ideation process, more of a sketching tool than a hired illustrator.

    Great commentary as always, comrades. The AI discussion at the end was very interesting. It reminded me of that Alan Moore quote about the age of information doubling as time goes on.

    I think Rich is incredibly on point with where this is going with the advancement of AI. I've seen it grow incredibly rapid within the short span of a few months. Give it five more years and the world is without a doubt going to undergo a massive change when it comes to making art or entertainment of any kind. Fascinating discussion at the end fellas. Would love to hear more of your thoughts on the subject.

      I remember reading somewhere that actors were starting to get contracts written up so that if they use their likeness after their death (deepfakes), their family/estate will still get money for it. They literally won't even need actors one day. It's scary how well the tech is now.

    Han walks into the command center on Hoth to inform the General that the sensors are in place but now he has to gtfo of there. They have one shot when he walks in of Leia looking at him and that's all you need to know. She cares about this guy but is also conflicted with those feelings, brilliantly acted by Carrie Fischer. One shot tells all!! Show don't tell.

    When you guys where discussing Force awakens. I always felt that script was originally written to be about Finn. His the only character to have an arch. His terrified of the First Order and has a weird moment with Kilo at the beginning.
    His the only one with a goal and agency, his given Luke lightsaber. He plans Rays rescue, he stands up and fights Kilo.
    Ray being the lead seems like a last minute decision and the script was edited to make those changes, rather than be rewritten.

    • @benhaslam1312
      @benhaslam1312 Год назад +6

      Having Finn as the lead would also make the film less of a retread of Star Wars 1. It also feels having made these changes to make Rey the lead that the writers of the later films had no idea what to do with Finn and he then had nothing to actually do.

    • @GamerWho
      @GamerWho Год назад

      @@benhaslam1312 Finn had an arch in The Last Jedi. In Force Awakens he is acting of loyalty to his friends. In Last Jedi he has to learn that the Resistance is bigger than any one person and he needs to stand up and be counted, which is why I love that exchange between him and Phasma "You always were scum!" "Rebel scum!" where he is announcing he is now on board.

      A real missed opportunity. Even the trailers and artwork were suggesting he would be the future Jedi. What a great story that would have been. Imagine if, after being bested by Kylo Ren, the lightsaber flew into Luke's hand instead of Rey's. He holds off Kylo, escapes with Finn and Rey and promises to train both of them.

    David Prowse once ate an onion on set in full Darth Vader costume to help Mark Hamill during that bit where he wot lost Palm and her five sisters. Hamill could smell Prowses Oniony breath through the mask and was screaming and crying. Prowse would later laugh about it later saying it "added an extra flavour to the scene".

      @@edwardhannah8507 I always remember the very odd story of how John Belushi went missing during the filming of Blues Brothers and they went knocking on houses in the Chicago suburbs. Eventually they found him. He had just knocked on some random persons door, went "I'm John Belushi. I'm very tired and need something to eat and to sleep." Raided the guys fridge, had a snack, and crashed from all the drugs he was doing onto the guys couch.
      So yeah, I absolutely 100% see where you're coming from

    Bare with Andor. The season is split into four 3-episode-arcs, so some episodes can be uneventful but it pays off later.
    Empire is definitely the most-tastefully "specialized" of the original trilogy. My favourite fan-edits meet halfway between the Blu Ray and Despecialized Editions. Called "D+77", "D+80" & "OTD83". You can grab them (and others) from the Star Wars Trilogy forums.
    Also have you heard FuzzNec's Sega Genesis megamixes?

  • @Thewingkongexchange
