    I think Verhoevan’s sci-fi trilogy is very much connected by the theme of Identity. RoboCop has Alex Murphy regain his Identity, Total Recall involves Quaid choosing his own Identity (even if it’s a dream) and Starship Troopers ends with Rico loosing his own individuality and becoming a drone in a horrible society.
    Of course I got none of that when I was twelve. I was all “fuck yeah kill dem bugs” and wanted a sequel. But the end ain’t meant to tee up more adventures. It’s to show that that war is fuckin’ endless 🥺

    I can remember watching this in the cinema when I was 15. I went with a bunch of mates and one of them didn't get in because the lady at the tick box didn't think he was 18, we all got in laughing our heads off as he look like he was gonna cry. He went home and got his dad to come and tell her he was 18 and he got in about 20 minutes into the film. Good times.

    • @davidjames579
      @davidjames579 5 лет назад +1

      Was this in the UK? It was a 15 at cinemas, but an 18 on video. I know as the BBFC later came out and said they were too lenient giving it a 15, and it should really have been an 18 all along.

    • @garydarnell3117
      @garydarnell3117 5 лет назад +1

      David James yeah it was. I was very confused when it came out on video and it was 18. I thought maybe there was some added scenes with more violence or nudity but it looked the same to me.

    • @davidjames579
      @davidjames579 5 лет назад +1

      @@garydarnell3117 Ok. I'm a little confused, why did the woman need your mate to be 18 to see a 15?
      I remember watching it and being amazed it was only a 15. On video, the BBFC had/still have tougher standards, as they have the wonky idea that if a strong film only seen by 15yr olds+ in cinemas can be seen by minors at home, it should be given an 18. I guess because they just assume parents screen 15 certs to toddlers, but an 18's where their morality kicks in. Bit rubbish if you watched it in cinemas and you're under 18, or don't have younger siblings.
      So yeah, the cinema and video versions of Starship Troopers are identical.

    Great commentary on a great film guys! In response to a few of your points:
    This being a Touchstone film, means Disney made Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers!
    For years, the book was recommended reading for US troops.
    Four films I can think of that take the piss out of what they're adapting would be:
    Dr Strangelove (1964): an adaptation of the very serious nuclear weapons crisis novel, Red Alert by ex RAF officer Peter George. Kubrick originally intended to do a serious film, but realised as he wrote the script that each plausible incident was so farcical, that he was having to remove stuff to stop it being funny. At this point, he realised what gold he had, and so let it be a dark comedy. Peter George wasn't particularly happy about that.
    Casino Royale (1967): Producer Charles Feldman happened to own the screen rights to Ian Fleming's first James Bond novel, the only one EON didn't have. His intention was to produce a rival Bond movie. He even offered Sean Connery a huge amount to come and work for him. But Connery said no. Feldman was so incensed that he decided he wanted to destroy the James Bond franchise's success by making the ultimate spoof of them, using his adaption of Casino Royale to do this. So CR went from a serious adaptation of a novel to a piss-take.
    Everything You Wanted To Know About Sex (1972): Based off a serious sex manual, Woody Allen changed it into a film of comedy sketches about sex.
    Adaptation (2002): Charlie Kaufman was tasked with adapting Susan Orlean's non-fiction book The Orchid Thief into a film. However, he became so stuck doing this, that he changed the script into being about how hard he was finding adapting the book. He inserted himself into the story, along with his fictional twin brother, Orlean herself, and invented a romance between her and the real life poacher she investigates in her book.
    Since Starship Troopers, Casper Van Dien's done alright for himself, marrying a Princess. Which was the subject of a reality show he made with his wife, called I Married A Princess.
    Aside from the Starship Troopers influences in Aliens, Cameron also had all the actors playing Marines read the novel.
    The film cost 105 million and made 121 million. To be considered for a (full size) sequel, Hollywood rule is you need to make double your budget at least.
    Zoe Poledouris is indeed Basil's daughter. IMDB contains some 'interesting' info: "At the age of nine years, she performed a piece on the recorder for her father which became the melody for "the orgy", which was featured in Conan the Barbarian (1982)". "Zoë later presented demos of her songs to film composer Christopher Tyng, who helped to further produce her songs. One of these songs, a curious dance number called "Into It", was chosen by director Paul Verhoeven to be performed in Starship Troopers (1997)".
    "In a 2014 interview on The Adam Carolla Show, Michael Ironside, said that he asked Verhoeven, who grew up in Nazi-occupied Netherlands, "Why are you doing a right-wing fascist movie?" Verhoeven replied, "If I tell the world that a right-wing, fascist way of doing things doesn't work, no one will listen to me. So I'm going to make a perfect fascist world".

    The problem with the film is Verhoeven let satire take over the entire film. At its heart RoboCop is a very human story with real characters played by excellent actors with some satire thrown in. Starship Troopers is all satire to the point where the characters are Ken and Barbie dolls played by bad actors just for satirical purposes. It doesn't work.
    Satire works best as a three strip cartoon. When it's stretched to a novel or a two hour movie it quickly becomes tiresome.

      Starship Troopers take the satire further by being a movie from that universe.

      Yeah I'm not entirely sure as a viewer why should I care about this movie.
