10 Weird Panzer IV Variants
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 4 май 2024
- The Panzer IV was the workhorse of the German army during the second world war with many different vehicles built based on it. While many of these were relatively normal some of them are far weirder. Today we will look at 10 of these weird Panzer IV variants and briefly discuss their stories.

@@naamadossantossilva4736 T-34 was indeed obsolete shit, especially early WWII era versions. Later on they were close to decent (thanks to resources that were supplied to them by US through LL) but still with many defects regardless

Schmalturm mentioned
I remember playing the Pz IV S on WoT and liking it so much that I created my entire online persona around it
It's just a super cool looking turret design to me, especially on the actual Panther F
Honestly, most german turrets look awesome, but the schmalturm was definetly one of the best looking turrets.
@@Peugeot_two-o-sixarmored hexagon
I have it on WoT Blitz, one of my earlier premium vehicles. Definitely a great tank to have, just great turret and epic gun. Used to spam battles in it just to farm credits. The added weight though doesn't make it as fast as other Medium tanks
The only tank on my account that remained with it's original crew since the day I bought it when it wasn't premium, over 2k battles on it and never sold it and with the same crew, despite WG took it from and replace it with a regular PzIV and then re-sale it later as a premium tank.... that I bought at the first day it was available 😅

Never expected he Hydrostat Pz IV and the Pz IV S to be a real deal, so is the concepts for some of WoT's iconic tank destroyers like the Waffentrager Auf Pz IV
I think of the WT, only the Wt Auf E100 doesn't have some real world history...afterall Rhm Borsig, Steyr WT and Wt Auf pz IV were the 3 designs from the Waffentragger project
Waffentraeger pz4 was planned in 2 variants, 128mm AT gun and 150mm artillery gun. But was only a paper panzer and not the only one proyected on pz4.
I immediately knew that the Dicker Max, Schmalturm, and Brummbär would be here. Didn't expect the Waffentrager auf Pz. IV here though.
I didn't expect the Sturmpanzer IV (Brummbär), because it just really makes sense for WW2 Germany. It's basically the original short 7.5cm-armed StuG III (variants A to E) concept updated to 1943. I honestly think the ultra-low Jagdpanzer IV and especially the absurdly armored and armed Panzer IV/70(V) are weirder because they're a new concept and just really extreme designs.
Waffentraeger was a extra development, in fact Dicker max was part of that.. WF pz4 was 2 configurations, TD and Arty. WoT game is pure fantasy.
@@emanuelmorales83 I was more familiar with the WoT name than the actual designation shown in the video. Thanks for the clarification!

The modified panzer IV, with a Soviet gun, is still in the "Museum of combat glory", It received a fresh coat of paint, but I would assume that, a restoration wont happen soon, if ever, since the museum is or was way underfunded. Since august of last year the museum has been renovated, and I hope the same happens to the tanks there.
If you are interested, next time I'm there, I could ask the workers for more details and the history of this particular tank. 🙂
That was a post war convertion used how bunker in Bulgarian border.
In ww2 only exist a 4C with 85mm flak on him in 1941. And 1945 with 88mm on pz4H.
I was surprised that out of all of those I only knew of 10, 5, and 1. Thanks for sharing. I'm always excited to learn new things about history especially for military vehicles, tanks, aircraft, ships, and so on
Number 2 was pretty cursed and i never heard of it. But even if i would had knew them all, your good videos always deserve a like.
I didn't take the bet. Liked the video anyhow. Many of these I had heard of, but this is the first time I saw photos of them. Well done!
The last 3 were new to me; thanks Cone!!
I love your videos, I just ate wings to like a couple of ur videos. Not only did i like but I also subscribed. Keep up the good work !
Thanks for letting me know more about obscure tank variants
Wow, you introduced me to a lot of Panzer 4 designs that I did not know. Great video!
Great video mate!
As a chronic WarThunder & former WOT player, along with being a huge ww2 history nerd and with watching a lot of your other tank videos I unfortunately know or have heard about all of these. However for the effort you put in your content you can keep my like :)
About Brückenleger system, sever prototypes was created under that program of development, starting on a 4A hull, begleitewagen, C, D and E hulls. Almost 3 types get production, some from Krupp was used in french campaign (14 builded), later converted at bergepanzer thanks at his internal crane for deploy the bridge.
A Variant bridgelayer for infantry was created using 4 B vehicles, all loosed in combat or for mechanical fails. The rest was converted at bergepanzer.
Magirus produced 10 vehicles, with a bridgelayer variant, and was used in Rusian campaign, later was used how jagdpanzer with a pak 38 mounted on, and the rest reconverted into standart pz4 hybrid type.
all my homies who plays war thunder
You could also mention Tauchpanzer 4 which is a panzer 4 variant projected for the operation "seelöwe".
it was capable of moving on the bottom of the lakes, rivers and seas at depth reaching about 10- 15 meters. the same thing was also made for panzer 3
Great job 👍
Great video. Thanks mate
That rocket launcher one at No.3 is extra weird because the turret appears to be a heavily modified and rearward-facing regular Pz.IV turret, at least from the hatches on the side and shape of it.
The pictures are wrong, same the data. Was equipped with a rangefinger, not a lamp. And can shoot 6 rockets of 21cm, not 4.
The ferry and bridge variations I did not know of as the recoiless one.
The recoiless rifle and light bridge as ferry variant were interesting. I didn't such things were designed but pretty interesting so it was interesting change
so keep your like Con of Arc you earned it.
while i heard of Panzer IV variants with differing features, 4 of them, the Bulgarian Panzer IV, the Bridging Panzer IV, the Recoilles Rifled Panzer IV, and the Ferry Panzer IV, are the ones that i didn't know.
and while i get to keep my like, i am willing to give it again as i now have a new rabbit hole to binge in.
There was also the munition-schlepper for the Karl Gerat seige cannon. It was a pz4 chassis and crane on top to lift the mortar shells to the gun platform. An entire division was tasked with operation of the Gerat.
That was an awesome video! Hope you are feeling better today.
Very interesting and informative vid, thanks :)
After you make the t34 list you should make a list of the craziest post war uses of tanks. Like that one firefighter t55 with jet engines on it.
Or the T-34 with dual MiG 21 engines
@@LoganJourney that's what I'm talking about, I'm fairly certain it was a 55
@@lt.lettuce2023 there was actually a few different ones made by different countries, and one being the T-34 one
Do make a video about the schmalturm turret! It is a highly misunderstood topic with the panther shenanigans imho. Fantastic video as always, thank you!
Your videos are something ill like and never taking it back
I learned there were some Pz IV variants I wasn't familiar with! Go Cone!
The ferry version was new to me indeed. Keep your like, you won it, fair and square.
Only the one with the Recoil-less I didn't know, I wouldn't let it count because it was never produced but I'll let you keep the like as I genuinely liked the vid.
Keep up the great work!
You get my like regardless of the results. I love you're vids.
I would like to see more on the pz.IV schmalturm and, thank you for making wonderful tank vids.
There isn't much to report on. It was a basic Krupp blueprint proposal submitted in November 1944 which was rejected by WaPruf-6 (automotive design office) a couple months later. The drawing depicted a Panther Scmalturm set on an new larger superstructure mounted onto a Pzkpfw-IV Auf.J chassis. No one ever considered it a viable design to be developed further.
That had some new ones for me in as well, good work Sir.
Personally, my favorite Panzer IV variant is the D/H. Starting as an infantry support and ending up with more then double the armor in some places in a combat tank role, some of those tanks really saw the long road of world war II. It may be not a really good tank, more a medicore jack of all trades, but seeing how long it was kept in service and how many upgrade programs the Panzer IV ran through, including it's experimental variants, shows that it had a really versatile base design to work with.
I saw variants I never knew existed, Thanks!
Im not taking your wager but i almost always give you a like at the end of the video. Youll likely get one here too
Yeah, i found some new variants in your video
But even if i didnt i would like, bc you channel is good and tanks too :)
You did deliver the goods.
That twin ferry design was the most interesting for me.
whats poppin, brand new vid just hopped in
The Ferry one, bridge one and the Gun carrier remade one was new to me enjoy the like (not the nashorn or Dicker max the closed top)
Hello cone of arc, i am an history entusiast and like the pz IV hydrostat you mentioned lawnmowers and skidsteer however i have a kubota ZB1400 sunshine there is also a kubota B7200 hst which is basically almost the same as mine, the HST stands for hydrostatic drive same as newer export kubota models that are smaller they have also hst drive and i find this very interesting
Many love
I love watching your videos
Hotaru
Very good vid as usual on your channel, but why didnt you include the Ammo carrier or Flakpanzer variants, especially the Kugelblitz and Zerstörer 45?
Because probably he choose the most weirds.
Zerstörer 45 was only a vierling with 2 mk103 (exist 1 picture and is tottaly different and drawings knowed), ammo carrier you have almost 6 differents. Another flak variants include a 37mm flak 18, pz4 with 20mm flakvierling (not wirbelwind), 2 versions of Ostwind 2 (37mm flakzwilling 43 and naval M43), and almost 4 more...
You introduce me with 3 weird variants of PZ IV
Thanks, it's interesting
Just checking if it's the same for both of us, as I had 3baswell, for me it was the 1st, the one with the russian gun and the one with that really strange looking rocket
@@Peugeot_two-o-six Close, mine is the rocket one, the Russian one, and the bridge
Exist 100 more.. lol. Almost exist 250 proyects based on pz4.. some created a 0-serie of prototypes and some only paper panzer. Only a few have only a name and description but only that.
For example a documment from march 23 - 1945, says "210mm elephant mounted on Hummel hull" and another documment from kummersdorf abt (who defend Berlin) showed a Hummel + drilling mg151.
I'd love a vidéo on the sturm conical turret !
I honestly didn't know most of these.
But by far, my favorite was No.2 that honestly was an interesting design, like a German version of the the Type-4 Special Launch "Ka-Tsu"
Yes, you did introduce me to at least 2 types, actually, tyvm
Well you introduced me to 5 Panzer IVs, the Bulgarian, the 125mm? If I remember correct. The 3 gunned one, and the last two.
Well you deserve a like my man.
The Panzer IV is personally my favorite tank in history, so it's nice to learn about many of the weird variants of the tank. And I'd like to see a video on the Schmalturm turret and its history with both the Panzer IV and Panther.
One thing I find interesting as a long-time model builder is how many of these "Weird Panzer IV Variants" are currently available in conventional, injection molded kit form, (unfortunately, this does not include the first one shown with the hydrostatic drive . . . yet . . . .)
A big part of this is that these 'weird' and "one-offs" are still pretty standard "from the waist down," making it more economical for model manufacturers to kit these unusual variants. Back in the day, Monogram Models not only had the Panzer IV, but also the Sturmgeschutz, Sturmpanzer, Panzerjaeger IV, and two Anti-Aircraft versions in their 1/32nd scale Armor Series. Tamiya and Italeri did likewise in 1/35th scale.
But until recently, I never imagined that we'd ever see kits of the Dicker Max and Nashorn, (which have been available for some time, now,) much less the 8.8 cm Flak version, the Schmalturm and Landwasserschlepper, and others like the Dieselpunk looking Kugelblitz Anti-Aircraft version.
And until just now, I had never heard of the Panzer IV mit 7.5 cm Rückstoßfreie variant. (Now, I just know I have a spare Panzer IV and some .040 Evergreen sheet lying around . . . .)
Thanks for posting this. My Like is in the 12Ks.
The issue here is because the mix all date and proyects. Exist almost 100 more.. i am modeller of pz4 too and researcher for hobby brands
The "last discover" was 210mm mortar on Hummel farhgestell
The pz4 with mk101, 30mm was planned in 1941 (mockep hull is from a 4b recycled), but the proyect was closed. Many people see the mk101 how 103.
@@emanuelmorales83 That sounds like a fantastic job for any modeler! I hope you will consider using your skills and influence to convince a manufacturer to come out with a conventional, injection molded kit of the Panzer IV Hydrostatic Drive shown here in this video.
Also, though not a Panzer IV, another intriguing kit would be of the Panzer III ausf N als Schienen-Ketten Fahrzeug SK1, with retractable railroad running gear.
I think that both would be popular!
I work for Border model (you can read my name in pz4H, instruction sheet page 2). Work too how advicer in AV Vallejo, and in 2018 released a book about Paper Panzer with AK interactive. In fact, i wrote the rules about differences betwen paper panzer, Panzer 46 and what if categories, in that book.
Now about Hydrostat pz4 sadly not have market because only 1 was produced, but exist resin convertions and 3D models, same the pz3H railroad.
Please more videos like these!
First prototype was interesting it is similar like direct drive good video😊
At 7:34, you refer to the wooden Panzer IV mit 7.5 cm Rückstoßfreie as a "mockup," and other sources online refer to this as a "model." Without any people in the few photos I was able to find online, I'm unsure if this was a full-size "mockup," as opposed to a smaller, scale "model." Does anyone know if this was a full-size wooden prototype, or a scale model?
Super cool format!
I’m down for the next ones!
Well done!
😎👍❤
I didint know of the 4. Recoyeles, rocket, floating and briging pz. IV.
Real question, what does the mm or cm stand for by guns for example a 10,5 cm gun. Is that the barrel thickness, breach thickness or length again, or how big the caliber is or what the main penetration cability is? It counts for bullets to what does the mm or cm mean for calibers?
That Panzer 4 with Schmalturm looks super cool.
Where do you get your stock videos and images?
OK, you got me with the bulgarian Version. I missed some Variants like the Mun Pz IV for the railroad guns or some improvements by the troops like the Pak 38 on a Pz IV Chassis
I've never seem the ferry or the rocket launcher variant. Nice, you get to keep my like :3
Wow, just...Wow. Those "Desperation Weapons" version were out there.
Smallturm turret vid would be dope!
Pz IV with the panther style turret looks weird but cool I love its
I would have listed either the Heuschrecke-10, Minenraumgerate-IV, or 5cm KwK39 L/60 Pzkpfw-IV Ausf.D instead of the Schmalturm Pzkpfw-IV since the latter was simply a Krupp proposal that was never considered for development, while the former three were all built as prototypes.
Would like to see a video on the weird world of Anti-air tank crossovers, some weird ones out there.
The only one that got me was the recoilless version. Can't say that I ever heard that one or even saw a picture.
OMG THAT PANZER 4 WITH THE 28CM ROCKETS IS MY NEW FAV VARIANT 😍
Surprised you did’t mention the Ausf K, which never left the drawing board. Redesigned hull for sloped armor.
I would love to see a dedicated schmalturm video.
An interesting episode on wierder Panzer IVs.
While it isn't a tank, I'm wondering if you have information on the PAW-600 shell projector (low pressure gun) and if you think it would be worth an episode. I'm not sure but I would imagine it could have fit in the Jagdpanzer 38(t) and possibly a Panzer III variant. It only became available in early '45 but I imagine that if it had been available a year earlier it would have given the allies nightmares.
I lost the wager within the very first entry. Well played, Mr.Cone...

Number 3 and 1 were new to me, and I just barely knew about the 4.
Ahh, just the video ive been hoping for
i definitely want to know about the schmalturm turret on the pz4, it looks so damn out of place but at the same time not so cursed i just need to know
If we are talking about weird variants of the Panzer IV i got two that are REALLY out there if you stretch the definition a bit.
the Whirbelwind turrets and also Panzer IV G "PanzerJeager" turrets ended up on German Armoured Trains (panzer zug) mainly due to the lack of metal and fuel for the tanks.
I would like to see a video on the schmalturm
The recoilless rifle variant got me, a deal's a deal
Some are post war production, without any relationship with the original development.
Btw exist more on A hull, B, D, E, G hulls
I loved this! I am a Pz IV Fan and I never heard of the rocket launcher variant! I wonder if there is a scale model of this out yet...
Just to be clear, I'm no Weraboo, but this might be the most educational video you've made in my eyes. I had only heard of maybe of half. Keep the like.
