I have always had a soft spot for the Lowe. The designs drafted up just make it look so good - that pinched, rounded turret is a thing of beauty coming out of a country that loves their boxes with guns.
Definetly check the proposed "Tigerzahn" turret for the E-75 then. Curvy, elongated and with extreme curved angles on the front it was expected to provide 270-300mm of frontal protection (taking into account said curves) It was scrapped due to a propensity of turret jamming and id assume dificulty to manufacture. Seriously beatiful cant wait to recreate it in Sprocket. Mounted either the 128mm or 150mm KwK L/55 guns
@@CreepSoldier yeah the Soviets didn't really make high quality tanks at all until after 1942. The average life span of a T34 was about 160 Kilometers(100 miles). So there was no need to make a tank of such high quality when you can just make a new one or the parts to fix them. Not many tanks in the war were super reliable anyways, its a common misconception that the the Sherman tank was a very reliable vehicle. obviously compared to German vehicles it was but. The Americans didn't need to worry about a tank breaking down because they had basically an unlimited supply of parts due to their relatively simple design. The Germans chose to make everything more difficult then it needed to be.
Hitler seems wanted everything bigger and thicker. Dude could have lasted longer if he changed his mind and focus on lighter tank like the Soviet did with the T34
@@Quang_Tran_asdf They had the problem of limited resources, fuel especially. They also refused to accept that they were stuck on the defensive and change their doctrine. Just slapping on more overall armor and increase weight is literally the worst design decision in tanks. They needed to develop more tanks like the JagPanther with front loaded armor and a big gun. Then have lighter tanks to move around and support it.
@@mando_dablord2646 Yes/no The Germans could never win the war, so all those "wasted resources" were also usefull: They ended the war earlier for themselves
Love this design. So conventional in everything but its size. World of Tanks brought it to life; I was astonished. Krupp had a good idea, but Shitler wanted 'bigger'. The original engine was to be the DB602, the same engine as those on the Hindenburg airship, with 1,100hp. And look at the turret: it's cast in one piece, like a bell. No German tank had a cast turret. And the 105mm gun would've packed a hellish punch, capable of killing most Allied tanks out to 2,000 meters. And your video is fine, considering the chaos you had to endure. Good work.
Actually, the original engine for the Löwe is the marine diesel version of the DB602, the MB501. It was eventually replaced by the 1000 hp Maybach design. I personally think the Kriegsmarine raised objections about using the MB501 in the Löwe, as they also use the engines in their Schnellbooten (A Schnellboot needs 3 MB501s to run).
Do you mean like the stationary defenses of the French Margino Line ??? Huge Tanks == Immobile Forts... If you want to use Navel Guns on land, the solution is railway guns, but not insane twin-track railway guns...
IMHO, the IS7 is everything the Maus aspired to be. It has a similar cannon, in a way even better armor and it has the mobility and reliability Maus could only dream of... If that's not a true marvel of engineering, then I don't know...
The Russians literally made what a super heavy had the potential to be and totally denied because it was expensive...none the less totally feel the same the IS 7 was a true marvel of engineering
I have often said, if I ever win a HUGE lottery prize, I would like to sponsor Germany to manufacture a Lowe with the 128 gun and a revised engine to serve it a little better than originally thought. I would definitely have it as a show piece for others to see, hear and touch. A Beast of a tank.

One of the most interesting tanks I had never heard about was the super heavy T28. Back when the armor museum was up at Fort Knox, I took my kids up there to go through it. Before we even went into the museum, I spent 30 minutes looking at that T28. That thing is crazy!
I like your intro, it's the thought that counts, a fitting intro is always a nice touch, effort appreciated my viewing pleasure is greater because of it
Well when I wikipedia the Lowe, the rear mounted turret variant is called the Leichter Lowe weighing 75 tons, while the central turret variant is called Schwerer Lowe...
It wasn't too forgotten, my first premium tank in World of Tanks was the Lowe. Actually loved that tank, loved the gun on it. Played it as a sniper and was not too bad with it.
Great videos as always. I like the info saying you don't have any more footage to show and are showing filler footage. I would like to see the text shown once (like you did) but keeping an asterisk shown the whole time the footage is not directly related. And when showing the 12,8cm Flak 40 at 3:34 maybe show it on screen with the product name 12,8-cm-Sfl. L/61 Pz.Sfl.V and how it was used in the prototype "Sturer Emil".
I have this Tank in my account in WOT, once, just like when it just put in the game. It's turret is near impenetrable. Most of the shells from tier 6 to 8 were bouncing, until it reaches tier 9 where more powerful guns could penetrate its cheeks. But the most useful of it was its gun, i'll just stay in cover instead and shoot from the distance.
I really appreciate your work cone of arc, from decent ideas that had a single flaw to insane ideas that were one big flaw you are an education; Thank you
"VK 7201" - I momentarily confused this with 2701, which was the initial designation of an Allied special unit in the novel Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. 2701=37*73 The product of two palendromic primes. 7201=19*379 Not quite as cool, but still only two factors.
Omg Love it! Excellent vid and research! I personally love the little details, thank you for the links! I wish some billionaire somewhere would reconstruct a Lowe for the world lol that'd be so cool. That tank existed just as a concept drawing, same for the grille 15, jagdpanzer E100, e50, e75... While some tanks in WoT are fake, made up by wg to fill the tech trees
Hitler never understands logistics. Even tanks like the regular Tiger I could not use most bridges, the Kingtiger also breaks into canalisations, tanks heavier than 30 tons could not be liftet by most harbour cranes of the time. They consume a lot of ressources and this meant having no tanks somewhere else.
@@igoryst3049 Leopard 1 yes the leopard 2 more like a medium boarding a heavy. I was also talking about the MBT-70 that was a heavy boarding a super heavy...
As much as people say that Germany was crazy for designing and wanting to build these Super Heavy vehicles, I personally think that for Germany it makes at least a bit of sense, as in WW2 they didn't have the industrial capacity of the USSR or the USA, so making smaller, more standardized tanks like the Sherman and T-34 doesn't make as much sense, as making one Sherman would take as long as a Panther, even though it was a less capable vehicle. Obviously designs larger than the Tiger 2/Löwe were completly stupid a the ammount of material was too much, for what they would have been capable of. Off course as we saw from the 3 heaviest German designs that entered serviece (Tiger 2, Jagdtiger, Feridinand/Elephant), Germany had a problem with designin powerfull enough engines and transmissions.
@@knoll9812 Kudos for replying after 2 years. Yeah, I'd say most heavy tank projects aimed too high, they always saw a new weapon that could destroy it and slapped on more armor just to handle it, rather than sticking with the original design. Heavy tanks could have worked, but weaponry was moving too fast to rely to armor too much.
To put things on perspective, the latest US Abrams tank M1A2 SEP v3 weight 73.6 tons, which more than rhe Tiger II and not much less than the Lowe, give or take how you define ton
Someone in this chain of Brainstorm thought about logistics? TigerI and TigerII needed for the removal of the outer Wheel-rims and for transportchains to fit on the flat railway car and through the tunnels of a railway. Maximum weight on bridges was also an issue. They were trying to build a supertank what in result could only defend the gate of its factory.
Germany before war: Hitler: No, we can t produce my but, its too heavy. Let s produce pz I. Germany at the end of the war: Hitler: don t produce the P.1000 ratte, its too light, lets produce my but instead. Albert Spear: Mein Führer, your but accidently crushed Siegfrieds line, the enemies are rushing towards us. America, England: oh, so we don't gonna need T28 nor tortoise anymore. They cracked it by themselves. (For those who doesn't know: T28 and tortoise were made for crushing though Germany's Siegfreid line.)
The steadily increasing caliber of German tank designs would have led to shockingly low rates of fire. Basically, the Germans were building a KV-2, and Krupp must have realized that 10.5 cm is the practical limit for one piece ammunition.
Not much would've happened. Germans were already getting stomped and they wouldn't have been able to move it around well. Probably with all the mechanical issues Germans had being multiplied as well.
Or maybe they end up getting it out quicker because they prioritize it over one of the solid panzer generations they actually produced and it ends up being a huge piece of shit because it's too heavy to do anything. Things get even worse when Russia snags a couple the German army was forced to leave behind, melts them down, and now every T-34 they produce from that point on gets an extra 30mm of armor lmao
So interesting it might be. Those super-heavy tanks where just a waste of resources -- what is good, because so we got rid of the fascists in Germany earlier. I even would count the Tiger 2 as big waste -- because the resources needed for this tank would have been allocated elsewhere much better. Particularly fuel, which was getting very scarce when the Tiger 2 was ready.
Thanks for this interesting video. After viewing, I can’t stop thinking of the M103 turret design. Do think the lowe would bear resemblance to that one. Cheers.

The VK7001 (VK7201 ?) Lowe Pz. VII mid-hull turret has for years been my favorite heavy or super heavy tank design, whether just left on the drafting table, a prototype, or actually produced. It has beautiful lines and proportions, and just looks wicked dangerous when displayed in paintings. If only it hadn’t been riddled with an endless list of probable technical faults, too heavy to have been practicable, a maintenance and logistical nightmare, and been owned and operated by disgusting goose-stepping Nazi thugs, it would’ve been just perfect 👍🏽!
this is why i play world of tanks, the original reason i got war thunder is for the Panther II and E-100 but i was many years too late.. not only that but gaijin refuses to take off the MG's on top of the Panthers and add the FG 1250 as a removable and installable modification, you can get so much more in world of tanks

I have always had a soft spot for the Lowe. The designs drafted up just make it look so good - that pinched, rounded turret is a thing of beauty coming out of a country that loves their boxes with guns.
Definetly check the proposed "Tigerzahn" turret for the E-75 then. Curvy, elongated and with extreme curved angles on the front it was expected to provide 270-300mm of frontal protection (taking into account said curves)
It was scrapped due to a propensity of turret jamming and id assume dificulty to manufacture.

WWII German tank engineering in a nutshell.
@@mando_dablord2646 they shouldve melted down the maus prototypes and the Lowe to turn them into more stug iii's because they were actually useful
@@mando_dablord2646 Yes/no

Imagine a huge German tank with 3 x Tiger 1 turrets in battleship orientation, like a Uber T-35 :D

A pack of hyenas can defeat the lion.
Glad you're correctly pronouncing the Löwe
Everybody had a problem making heavy tanks.
Both the tiger and the panther needed to lose 5 tons
@@knoll9812 Kudos for replying after 2 years. Yeah, I'd say most heavy tank projects aimed too high, they always saw a new weapon that could destroy it and slapped on more armor just to handle it, rather than sticking with the original design. Heavy tanks could have worked, but weaponry was moving too fast to rely to armor too much.
this was such a good premium in WoT
Life was pain for German tank transmission
To put things on perspective, the latest US Abrams tank M1A2 SEP v3 weight 73.6 tons, which more than rhe Tiger II and not much less than the Lowe, give or take how you define ton

Someone in this chain of Brainstorm thought about logistics? TigerI and TigerII needed for the removal of the outer Wheel-rims and for transportchains to fit on the flat railway car and through the tunnels of a railway. Maximum weight on bridges was also an issue. They were trying to build a supertank what in result could only defend the gate of its factory.
It is called forward thinking. Perfect for 1945 :P
If we're only playing rule of cool, the Germans had the best armor ideas for WWII.

1941 they had the thing planned? Imagine if they actually got that thing out by say, 1943 or 44.......poor Allies.

I like the design with the turrent in the rear.
So interesting it might be. Those super-heavy tanks where just a waste of resources -- what is good, because so we got rid of the fascists in Germany earlier. Particularly fuel, which was getting very scarce when the Tiger 2 was ready.
