As for the Yugoslav Sherman tank with a 122mm gun, I know 100% that there actually were two, because they were located in my military base where I served in the army. That was some 20 years ago. Since that military base does not exist, I don't know what the fate of those two Shermans was, they most likely ended up in scrap metal.

The M36B Jackson had a Sherman chassis. There were more Sherman chassis available than the standard chassis they needed. The crew like the ball mounted machine gun in the radio operator position as it better gave support against enemy

I thought I knew a lot about Shermans. I have been humbled and proven wrong. The only ones I knew about was the T10, Aberdeen proving ground M4 Improved and the Persman (M4/T26 but I like the name you came up with for it.) the latter two thanks to WoT and WT. I think I use to know about the T53 but it had faded from my memory. I had expected some of the more well known cursed variants but it was nice to see some of the lesser known oddities like from Argentina and Israel not being the M-51.

When I was a kid in the 1960s, there was a gutted Sherman hull, in the playground of a local park. It was filled with sand, and the main gun barrel was welded shut. All the small protrusions, were also removed and resulting holes welded and ground smooth. Just something for the kids to climb over. Next to it was an old firetruck, similarly modified.

    1. More uncanny valley than cursed, but that (another) Israeli Sherman that had its upper part of the hull shortened. Definitely a "something's wrong with it, but can't point out what" thing

I was JUST wondering about a Sherman with a 90mm yesterday!

  • @billwilson-es5yn
    @billwilson-es5yn 2 месяца назад

The one with the fix mount 90mm AA gun was a M3. The Army had 52 1918 90mm AA guns laying around so Ordnance looked into mounting them on the M3 hull. The first one inside the gutted superstructure was too cramped for the crew so it was set in back after the engine compartment was moved forward. That gave it room to transverse plus space for storing rounds. Ordnance cancelled further work on it once the M4-M10 was finalized. Ordnance then used that M3 hull to develop into the 155mm howitzer gun motor carriage. The M4 with the M26 turret was probably a test just in case the production of the M26 was delayed until January of '45. The M26 was ordered into production in February of '44 after the Fisher Body assembly plant became available. They were producing the M10 so were given the contract to produce the M36 using the M10 hulls. Their union workers went on strike so Ordnance collected all the M10's at the stateside training bases for refurbishing into M36's. Fisher Body reworked those with the twin Detroit Diesels then got to work designing and building the M4 Jumbos. Fisher Body was to start assembling the M26 in September but delays over machinery and obtaining strategic materials by the parts suppliers left them with nothing to assemble until mid-November. I don't know who made the M36 turret since Ordnance shipped 29 to France for use on repaired M4 hulls then had the rest sent to Ford for placement on new M4'S coming off the assembly lines. The turret swap was done outside in the storage yard where the mechanics changed out the ammo bins.

That giant mine roller actually looks sort of useful. Or at least something similar to it would be very useful

Well since I'm a War Thunder enjoyer myself I have encountered the odd Sherman variant myself so I'll take a guess.
    - T26 turret
    - Skink AA
At least two of Hobart's funnies so:
    - Crab minesweeper
    - Duplex Drive amphibious 'showercurtain'
    - Israeli M51 Super Sherman
Jamming in a gun sideways is both genius and cursed so
    - Firefly
    - Calliope
    - another Israeli abomination, the MAR 240 sideways rocket pod

Almost all were new to me. I am sort of surprised not to see the rocket version, but I guess it would have been more of a modification than a variant, as it was just bolted on.

#4 had me smiling and it absolutely needs to be added to the Israel tech tree in War Thunder.
For #1, the T53 (gunshield) is worse. I approve of the T53E1 (box) for both the better center-of-gravity location of the main gun and the better protection for the crew.

I'd seen all of these before, but the only ones I knew for sure would be on the list were the SO-122 and the Israeli rocket Shermans. I didn't really think about the Ro'em being a cursed Sherman since it's *so* big an alteration you would hardly know from looking at it that it *was* a Sherman, but it fits.
But where's the M-50 Degem Yud, the lowrider Sherman?

I'm not surprised that I was unaware of so many versions of the Sherman but I was a little shocked that the Duplex Drive didn't show up here. For all the faults or vonrability you might normally associate with the M4 - drowning at sea wasn't normally a danger to the crew in most variants. Okm it did work well enough for small rivers and lakes, but still how many other tanks need the crew to wear life-jackets?

Were the Sherman to ever be sold to the public the T-10 is exactly what they'd look like in every hood and every small town south of the Mason Dixon line. In Los Angeles they would have also gone through a spinner phase (a trend that that thankfully died out a while back).

The Skink should be included in this list (Canadian Grizzly Sherman, with special quad 20mm turret; one vehicle saw very brief but extremely effective service, albeit in an anti-infantry & anti-materiel role).

The Sherman with the Slugger turret tho... its... weird... but I pray it plugged any tank it saw since I remember that the US were really needing more of the 90mm M3's and there were very little Pershings and Sluggers that packed it at the time

Up gunning a Sherman means you have a tank with good armor but would be hopeless with peer gunned tanks as Sherman armor would never hold up

3:00 No wonder you are so confident that we can't guess all of your picks. You included this only-on-drawing-board “variant” instead of those actually fought on battlefields and failed miserably, like the DD variant with only 2 out of almost 80 made it to the shore at Omaha Beach.

I feel like the M10 is another Sherman chassis that seems to be taking notes from the T-34, bases on the armor angles on the hull and turret. Or maybe just convergent evolution

@@j.f.fisher5318 Open top and thin armor probably made it easier to go that route. I am also struck by the convergence of the T26 and IS2.
