The only thing I might do differently is, instead of Dexter being executed, I'd keep him alive as a consultant for the police. That way, they have him in their back pocket for a future spinoff. For instance, suppose they wanted to do a show about a new killer in the same universe and they go to Dexter for advice, a "Silence of the Lambs" type of thing.

I loved it because it was emotionally satisfying, honored the character arcs of characters I really love the most, and it was a proper goodbye to Dexter and the series. I really do hope you send it to them and/or publish it! GOT fans actually crowd funded like $1 million dollars and petitioned HBO to redo season 8. 😁...it didn't work of course, but still. Lol

I loved your ending Cody! Super detailed, exciting and well thought out.
I actually wrote my own the day after the finale to help “heal.” I wrote it from the perspective that “he had to die” even though I honestly never wanted that. I love reading other peoples ideas so I thought I’d share mine.
(Would take at least 3-4 episodes if not another season.)
Starting from after Angela has left to go find Kurt’s bunker - continues on to where Batista should have shown up and ultimately takes Dexter back to Miami.
We get to see the media coverage of Kurt’s bunker of horrors, the families of the missing girls get closure, and a search for Kurt.
We get to see a not so happy reuniting with Batista & Dexter arrive in Miami. Harrison stays in Iron Lake for the time being with Angela & Audrey.
We get to see interrogations with Dexter, where he ultimately tells the ENTIRE TRUTH. Miami metro now knows, and we get to see their reactions. We get to relive his glory days, victim by victim (quickly since there are so many), in big bright lights. Media frenzy. Half the public thinks he is a monster and the other half is actually okay with what he has done with a few exceptions of the innocent people. Dexter gets to semi live his dream of (some) people accepting him for who he is.
So many missing cases are closed that were the remaining victims of Dexter that weren’t found after season 2. Dexter admits to killing Kurt. The missing girls families have several members reach out or make a statement semi thanking Dexter for that.
Harrison battles with truly accepting his dad as the execution date comes closer. He ultimately goes to Florida to see his dad before the execution date. He does love him, he is just trying to figure out his emotions.
The day comes. Protesters/Dexter supporters are outside the prison. Dexter gets to have that final conversation with his son in person. It’s emotional, similar to the finale except he hasn’t killed Logan - but Harrison brought Hannah’s letter. We get to hear him reading the letter again and he emphasizes why he left and that what will happen today is for the best and the best for his son. They cry. Dexter tells his son he loves him for the first time in his teenage years. It’s an incredibly moving moment and helps viewers accept his fate easier.
He gets ready for those final minutes. We see him sit down in the chair and strapped up. He looks over and sees Harry standing there. “I’m sorry son. I never wanted it to end this way.” Dexter looks at the camera blankly, but at peace. Inner dialogue: “Harry was right. This was always going to end with me dead.”
    Screen goes black.
I feel like it would have been a much more proper send off and a tribute to the fans than what we got. But like I said, I love yours too!

For some reason I always pictured Dexter not getting the death penalty, but being sent to ADX Florence, Colorado, the prison for the most dangerous killers. It's 23/24 hour isolation, limited contact with the outside world, it's specifically designed for inmates too dangerous to be around other inmates and who pose a massive risk of escaping.
And him being spared death would be the result of Batista pulling strings to get him life without parole in memory of the friend he thought he knew.

From the perspective of police chief Angela.. when she returned to the police station and found Logan dead, she would have considered that Harrison - who had a history of wrestling and breaking an arm intentionally, and slashing people - came to the station, killed Logan, and freed Dexter. Then, when finding Harrison had killed Dexter, that would have confirmed it for her. An appropriate endind would have been Angela arriving as Harrison is about to kill Dexter. Dexter sees that Angela has arrived, and tells Harrison to "DO IT NOW!" So Harrison then shoots Dexter killing him, as at the same time, Angela interprets what Dexter said as telling her to shoot Harrison - which she does. So both Dexter and Harrison are dead. End of story. Nobody liked Harrison anyway.

Very interesting alternative with very few changes Cody, way better than the original.
So an alternative idea for the show that I randomly had after seeing the finale:
Drop all the teen parenting drama on the first 2/3 of the season. Set up a good killer duo with Harrison starting in episode 1-3(max) (by Harrison figuring out quick or maybe Hanna told him or something). Then during the season they have a kill of the week kind of dynamic, while the Kurt thing gets cooked, and Dexter shows Harrison the code, going into the moral dilemmas of it, and Harrison getting impatient while Dexter shows him patience and the importance of prove. Seeing how Harrison embraces the code and admires Dexter, and seeing them bonding a lot. The hole Batista thing goes roughly the same (maybe a bit smoother than "oh, what was his name..." thing xD), but him and Angela get closer and closer. Also as you said Angela being a bit less binary on his emotions would have been a bit better.
So in the finale, Dexter and Harrison capture Kurt, but just after killing him and while getting rid of the body, Batista or/and Angela come in and see the whole thing, then Dexter realizes that Harrison will be sent to jail and kills them (i kind of can't think a cool way for Dexter to express that to the audience though, but well, I am not a writer :-D ). Almost paralyzed turns to Harrison and says something like "they didn't fit the code... but I do now" and Harrison pulls back trying to contradict him, but at the end ends up giving up and kills him. They could even play the card of Dexter guiding him through it, first alive and after dying as the dark passenger.
IDK, not a writer or anything LOL, but I would have enjoyed it much more (kind of the good-old-dexter) and I would have felt the emotional weight of his kill on Harrison. With something like that I may even have been ready for a Harrison spin off, as I myself would have bonded more with his character.

    @ryanb2607 2 года назад +26

To re-do the ending right, you have to re-do the whole season.
The season was trash in hindsight; we only put up with the plot holes, inconsistencies and lack of believability (all far greater than any previous Dexter season other than season 8) because we love Dexter and were expecting a pay-off that makes it worth it.
The entire set-up was wrong: The show should have BEGUN with Dexter and Harrison having already been long-reunited. Hannah got sick or whatever and contacted Dexter when Harrison was 10 or 12, and we come into the first episode introducing us to Dexter and Harrison's new life. Now "New Blood" really works.
With this set-up, you could now easily introduce elements to convincingly end the show as they chose to (which would still have been horrible - ending a great character via patricide is incredibly insulting).
Having Dexter die saving Harrison, who is now following the code - this would have been the proper ending.
In the book Dexter dies saving Deb, Astor and Cody. It wasn't particularly well-written or eventful, but it's a far more deserving ending for a hero.
And that's my final point: Dexter is a hero. He's the only anti-hero in any show I could point to who is actually, undeniably, an actual hero. Nothing they did in the finale changes any of that; whatever wrong he did, the innocents who were killed, it is far outweighed by Dexter's good. In direct regards to the finale; was Logan's life worth more than another 30 women Kurt was going to murder? If Dexter never comes to Iron Lake, Logan lives, but so does Matt, and 30 women die over the next decade. I'll take Dexter.
He was truly the Dark Defender; thousands and thousands of innocent people (and the children they will have) are alive (in the Dexter universe) because Dexter hunted and killed the worst serial killers and predators who had completely eluded law enforcement (strongly implying they were going to continue killing unchecked). The world was safer and better because Dexter was out there, protecting us.
And the fact that the show, in the end, was so intent on convincing us of how evil Dexter really is... it's pathetic. It really demonstrates they never understood the character that they helped create.

    • @Moleda1986
      @Moleda1986 2 года назад +8

Agreed, it really upsets me how much the writers want us to hate Dexter. They’re desperately trying to convince us he’s this bad guy who deserved to die, but that’s just not the case. And anyone who agrees with the writers just doesn’t understand Dexter as a character as far as I’m concerned.

This ending has it all. It has a definitive conclusion for Dexter. It ties up the subplot with Angela and the subplot with Harrison more organically. It shows Angela wrestling with her complicated sense of morals that the show kept teasing us with. It makes Harrison more likeable. It explains what the heck was going on with Edward the whole time. It completes Dexter's long and winding road to being more human. It gives Batista the closure he longed for with LaGuerta. It finds a reasonable way to bring Miami back into the fold without feeling like a gimmick. It finds a nice way to give cameos to all of the original cast. And ultimately it has a nice final line to end the show on. After Clyde Phillips royally screwed everything up on the last episode, it's nice to see a "what could have been" with minimal tweaking. Outstanding job.

Excellent job! That's an awesome ending! I really liked the addition with oil Tycoon dude and like how you handled Angela. Her unforgiving anger towards Jim/Dexter never made sense to me, because the only thing Dexter did as far as she knew, which initially checked out, was start a new life for himself and in that new life he met her and everything was going great. So even upon finding out that he could be the Bay Harbor Butcher, it makes perfect sense for her to rationalize it, especially with his handling and exposing of Kurt Caldwell... Now Batista on the other hand has every reason to be upset, especially when he suspects that Laguerta was killed by him, so Batista is clearly the guy with the greatest motive to bring down Dexter. I really liked the humor in the dialogue when Batista says you probably don't know how many people you killed and Dexter spouts off the exact number (that joke would play out even better on screen than on paper). Anyways, awesome ending and I'm insanely critical when it comes to the handling of Dexter. I still can't believe they blew the ending. It's almost as if they intentionally gave us the worst ending possible, because they couldn't have done any worse.

The best option for New Blood was to make it an examination of morality, which would've added depth to the story. Dexter going after serial killers is a stale trope. And it's a ridiculous idea to make Dexter a bad guy in the last 15 minutes when the audience has been rooting for him for 9 seasons. The show absolutely had to go "beyond good and evil" and make Dexter realise the superficiality of his "code" and a cop counterpart realise the limitations of the judicial code. Well, that would require above average writers, and maybe the best these writers could come up with were an edgy teenager and a bitchy cop.

    • @ryanb2607

2nd best comment after mine 👍
This would have been great for season 3, btw. Instead of killing Doakes in season 2, have Doakes and Dexter come to some kind of an understanding and they frame someone together (a dead bad guy) as the Bay Harbor Butcher. This would have set up an amazing dynamic for Season 3.
Since I'm on a roll; I would have continued the story with Season 4 being about the Dr. Vogel storyline (different actress please, different villain!), that could have been introduced much earlier with great effect, and enabled going into the past with the interview scenes with Harry and Vogel; that could have worked great.
Then season 5 - Trinity killer.
Season 6 should have been Dexter in a new location, having left Miami after Rita's death to start over. Your wife gets killed by a serial killer; that's not a profile that works for a serial killer. Everything after season 4 didn't work for me. Either they needed to not kill Rita that way, or they need Dexter to do something drastically different in the next season.
This could have been a cold location, like New Blood. You'd have the great set-up of Dexter shedding everything that was 'cover,' realizing even that Harry was right, and he didn't need anyone. So now you start over in a sense. This would have been a fun direction.
      Anyways, ranting. Great comment!

@@ryanb2607 Yes, that would've made a great Season 3. Although I do like the current Season 3. Dexter seemingly finding a friend in Miguel only to find out he was being manipulated was good writing.
When I said a moral exploration, I meant something similar to the case of Brother Sam in Season 6. They could've used it to make Dexter dive deeper into his psyche and his black and white understanding of people.
That's why I wasn't impressed with Kurt's character, although he would've made a good villain for an earlier season. It would've made for fascinating viewing if Dexter had to fight a morally grey character and in the process understand the moral greyness of his own actions.

I liked this ending more, even better than my own rewrite that I put up on the channel if you wanna check and give your thoughts.
The way I did it was a complete rewrite of New Blood. I wasn't convinced that justice could be done to the Harrison story in such a short time, so I scrapped that, focusing only on Dexter, the villains, and him being slowly exposed as the BHB.
I liked Debra as Harry and the Caldwells as villains so I didn't change that much, but I too reimagined Ed Olsen as the true big bad and Kurt's handler.
I made Molly Park a bit more competent, more focused on the BHB story and Angela less of a Mary Sue with both needing each other to take down Dexter.
I made Dexter himself less of a dummy. I know he's supposed to be rusty but come on. For example Dexter will initially plan to let Kurt kill Molly, only intervening when Angela asks him to follow them as a favor and make sure Molly is safe as she doesn't wanna be seen following Kurt herself (at this point she doesn't know Jim killed Matt).
Dexter doesn't contact Hannah in this remake and Hannah doesn't die of cancer, Hannah and Harrison only appear at the very end for a few seconds reacting to Dexter's sentence as the trial is heavily televised around the world similar to the OJ trial.
Quinn returns as an FBI agent who's driven mainly by the desire to get answers for Debra. He comes to Iron Lake to investigate the missing girls and Matt, but he doesn't care about that case or even about catching Dexter, and serves as both ally and foe to Dexter depending on the story progression. He's the wildcard, but he does play a role in his downfall besides Molly and Angela.

Damm Cody’s ending was great. I would’ve paid money to see that version instead of the bs we got. Funny enough, I put a question on the Dexter Reddit yesterday asking “how would you have ended New Blood?” Along with my own ending. I had Harrison and Dex escaping to LA, only for Angel to end up surprising them there, and just like both of Cody and CP’s versions, Harrison and Batista end up in a standoff when Batista tries to bring Dexter in. That tells us that most Dexter fans wanted to see Harrison defend his father, and if anyone was worthy of killing Dex, it was Batista

This is a cathartic conversation 2 years later and before original sin airs. Adding to the NB grievances I hate that they disappear Astor and Cody completely from the story, especially when Harrison returns. I think they should have shown Dex secretly scrolling through their social media just to give us some closure for their characters. Just a brief glance like they did with Batistas email inbox that mentions Masuka’s bachelor party. Imagine Cody’s ending but with Cody and Astor watching Dexter get injected and Rita standing behind them 😭

I cry for everything, from seeing something sad on the street to commercials, but the way they killed my favorite character ever just left me like “😐“ no tears at all. But THIS! My eyes are watering right now! (In a good way) this makes so much sense, being recognized by the public the way he wanted it, showing the duality of the things he does, showing that the System is so crappy that he is needed on the streets. And taking the mask off and being seen for the first time ever (as his true self) by the people who loved him and Harry showing up! Man! I love this 😭 Can the fans unite and state this the official ending?

1:15:44 I agree. In the show you get to see more of Hannibal before he was revealed as a serial killer and cannibal and more of him free whereas the only times Hopkins's Lecter is free is the end of Silence of the Lambs and all of the Hannibal film. For most of Silence and all of Red Dragon he's locked up.

6 Ft Under isn’t a morgue, it’s a family run funeral home so storing bodies is only part of it. 6 gives a real lens to death & then also things like embalming, etc. Characters are interesting & well developed. 13 episodes per season til the end I think. Premise - MCH’s older brother comes home to visit & an event occurs to change direction of his life. Series has many family & relationship dynamics @ why we are who we are. Parent relationships & others are explored. Spoiler - you’re gonna think @ “Harry” if you saw Dexter 1st like I did.
