Loving these new videos you’re putting out. They’ve all been really informative and great to watch.
Rob, your insight is cherished. Thanks again for the information.
Great suggestions. Good luck to you in what ever you do in the future. Love your videos with Andertons!!
Great advice Chappers! Defining what success means to you is brilliant & can save years of blindly chasing someone else’s dreams. You & yours have a lovely Festive Season.
Thanks for watching Dude. Have a great Christmas :-)
Very good advises ! Thanks a lot Rob
Good stuff Rob !! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Great video as always Rob- I always look forward to the next one- Have a great Christmas both you and yours 🎅🎅🎅🎅
Thanks Rob, good video and a tonne (the metric kind!) of good tips and common sense reminders. I like the new direction the channel is going into, keep it up.
Thank you Master Chappers, for the advice. 🎸
Thanks Rob, always a good motivator for guitar. Your sound is not really my gig but I appreciate your ability. The world of gear is awsome!
Thank you Rob. Have a nice xmas....
Great vid again Rob, always look forward to your vids, great advice, one thing that I have found that absolutely works for me regarding tone is always having an EQ pedal at the end of my chain. Spending time tweaking one of these I have found always improves my sound and yet they are very rarely mentioned ….. all the best to you and yours over this festive period 👍🏼
I've seen you back in Kavala some time ago and been watching your content now and then.. The feeling stays the same, I just get excited every time you give me tips 😅 Keep it up 🤘
It was a nice touch displaying the pedals you use.
Wow, this is absolutely amazing! Thank-you for sharing these total gems of advice with us younger players!
Good to see you back, Mr. Chapman
Tip #15. There is a pedal that does exactly what you want: The Old Blood Noise Beam Splitter.
Love the information in this. Specially the first one was amazing
I’m here because you ALWAYS have the best advice. And yet again, you didn’t disappoint! I’d love to do a review of something on the Chapman line of things!
Thanks Carlos I really appreciate that
This is great! Thank you
Cool and usefull video man! Thx chappers 🤘🏽
You are welcome Dude, glad you enjoyed it :-)
Good stuff-I enjoyed the video enormously 🙂:-)
thanks for all the great advice my good sir :)
A big ❤ for the muggle sentence 🤣🤣
I play guitar since 08/09 and must say this is an actually nice ass list he is giving there. Thanks. Hope u all have a nice Christmas n New Year🤘🤘
Thumbnails r nice btw ✌️
Excellent vidio Rob. Not been subscribed to you channel for long but luv it😊. Bought one of your ML3 standards too from Andertons and well pleased with it😊. Like you said on the video its workhorse, an excellent one at that😁
Every day learning more keeps me interested in guitar even after 50 years of playing!
Thank you for the video Rob. All are great advices. I specially appreciate the define the ' I’ve made it!'. Fighting against myself all these years, comparing myself with other guitar players I know was really keeping me away from enjoying the ride. Sad not enough teachers explains that.
Thank you Rob! I love the "ring the body/neck" thing, I never tried, I have to check all my guitars now. As for double tracking, I normally use a DI box to split the signal in 2 paths. One goes through my rig first an then into the DAW, the other goes straight into the DAW and enhanced with plugins like BIAS Amp or Neural DSP. I then play with levels and pans until it sounds good to me.
First one makes sense for me. Although I don't worship "wood theory", this time I heard something, what made me - "Hmmm...I should try this ". I love Rob's reviews and his ability to hear these tiny, subtile accents in tone.
Another one about looks of the guitar. Massive affect on time spent with one or another guitar in your hands is, how it looks. As I say - "A good guitar has to be red, and red guitar can't be bad".
Well, other ponts in this list are useful too, but these two are handy, when choosing your first guitar.
My ML1 looks, feel and sounds perfect. 🤘
Thanks for admitting that looks is a very important part of deciding what guitar you want. If it doesn’t look cool and grab your attention you’ll be less likely to pick it up. Most of us our age probably started out playing on a hand me down or a cheap used guitar and we didn’t even get to really pick it out. At least I didn’t I had a Honer tele that was my uncle’s old guitar it had one pickup sorta in the middle, now it had been set up and played pretty good but it wasn’t metal and I wanted to play metal eventually I got an Ibanez IC300 and I think I slept with it for a few months but when I finally got one I thought was cool I know I played and practiced more. I did have a Squier Strat before the Iceman too but it had single coils and when I got it I didn’t understand that I really needed humbuckers to do what I wanted. I also loved maple fretboards in the very beginning but all my heroes had dark fretboards rosewood or ebony I’d been learning to play for a couple years before I finally figured it all out. I want a humbucker in the bridge into something Marshall ish.
Thanks for the comment. Dude. Yep look is super important - it all comes down to how it makes the player feel because that ultimately will affect the way that you play. The end of the day I think when we start learning to play we are reenacting our heroes, and then gradually we just want to express, the music that we write or perform.
Have a great Christmas :-)
@@RobChappers exactly Merry Christmas to you and yours as well.
Thanks Rob.👍🍻🎸
Your past-month of wider-topic videos have been top-notch! #dashes
Thanks mate, really appreciate the positive feedback - lots more on the way :-)
Great video dude! I use the dual amp presets on the quad cortex. They sound "double-tracked" and huge.
Great show!!
Tip #15. There is a pedal that kind of does this. It's called TC electronic Mimiq.
That's what I would suggest too. I've got one and it's a great tool.
also the old blood noise endeavours - beam splitter is designed to emulate exactly this
Hey Rob,
Something I find inspiring is the great enthusiasm you show in your videos !
Having a different guitar for different jobs totally makes to me😜 actually one my Favs lately is the customized Ml3 pro modern in my profile picture 👍
I’ve put my own personal touch on it of course …. 🤘😜🤘
great tips as always. a chapman guitar is on my wish list.
"The Meat Computer" is now my favourite description of the brain 🤣
Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it
Very nice
Great A.I. Rob. Keep it up😜😇
Definitely seems to divide opinion, but I like it, I enjoy the freedom of creativity for me. It’s just another tool like a calculator or Google - thanks for watching dude :-)
this was great
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it dude have a great Christmas :-)
Tip one. I did that when servicing 15 Squier strats in a school music department. I swapped the necks around to pair up the "best". It turned a very average rack full of guitars into 5 exceptionally good one's, 6 good one's, 3 average and "the one" that was a warped neck and a cracked body with all the resonance of a bin liner full of jelly. Great experiment but took all day to do. I wonder why manufacturers don't seem to do this stuff routinely as it takes very little time to pair them up...
for me favourite guitar is essentially whichever one has the best fretwork, frets, neck feel and setup. sound and look definitely distant second and third. fretwork and neck definitely the most important thing in determining my favourites. you've got amps, eq, cabs, speakers, pedals, studios etc to change the sound. and if you don't like the look, just close your eyes when playing.
You are such a nice guy! BTW you should make that pedal you mentioned at the end don't wait for somebody else! Thanks for everything!
Great vid sir and some bloody good nuggets of info there :)
I would normally agree on how to pick a geetar but my favourite and go to geetar got me on feel and sound since when i first clapped eyes on it i didnt like the colour... ;)
I am a player that plays for himself mostly. 3 of his tips resonate with me. I just went through my amp settings and both my amps now sound better. could be I think they do, but.....both were set totally different than before and I hear the difference... 2. playing with other people... I have done this pretty much only once...for a school reunion for a school overseas. we practiced for about 4 hours or so, and I found playing with others to help immensely. the most amazing part to me was that I was able to help with the ending of a song, a part that i learned from RUclips......lol 3. recording many takes of the guitar to increase the presence.....and a fourth was from many years ago on the position of the wrists to the fretboard or neck.....which I did get to thank him personally for in Houston Texas in 2018? at the guitar center there....Robea and Rob put on a really good session there.
Hi Kirk, I remember that clinic as if it was yesterday - had an amazing dinner that evening. Some of the best food ever seems to be in Texas - hopefully will get the chance to meet again at some point, I’ll be at NAMM in January 🤘🏽❤️🤘🏽
Thanks Chappers.
Hi Rob. You need to check out the Beam Splitter from Old Blood Noise Endeavours. It does the triple tracking very well apparently 👍
Decent list of ideas! As a line 6 helix owner, I can confidently say you can achieve your last idea of running 1 guitar through two different digital rigs simultaneously. Also, if you run it via the 4 cable method into a valve amp, it'll make your balls wobble for sure!
Thanks,Rob! Very interesting. I'm not a musician and I can't anaöyse what guitarists are doing, but sometimes I hear it. Experience over the years and a big interest in guitar, I'd say.I don't know where on the fretboard they are but I hear what they are doing if I concentrate on it. One thing I still don't get how you are able to do this is your playing with pick and fingers. This amazes me every time I see it!
Why not use the same Picküp config if you have a clear favourite? I love Neil Youngs tone. If I played I would try to sound like him. So why not have this sound on most of my guitars?
Merry christmas to you and your family.
You mentioned guitar cable quality and buffers (in pedals). My thought is your passive guitar signal is effectively weak and easily corruptible by loading and capacitance until it's buffered, which converts it to lower impedance to drive cables etc better (hence the name). So get a quality lead until your first buffered thing (or pedalboard switcher buffer/etc). Then you can save a bit more money on cables after that first buffer point. But don't go too cheap on that first one, it definitely makes a difference. A/Bing any of the others I can hardly tell, but the length and quality of the one before my board is definitely noticeable. YMMV
Great! Rob we need a lefty Hotrod someday, don't you agree😎
Line hx doubler does a version of double tracking , and with a helix there are ways to put a signal through different setups and send it stereo
Concerning good looking guitars. I went the other way with my latest purchase, a Fame Forum Custom. It doesn't exactly have the most exciting look for my taste, even though it's nice, but it's handcrafted by Mayones, and damn that shows in terms of quality. Best set up guitar out of the factory I got so far, crazy low action, no fret buzz, no other guitar I had before came nearly close to that detail for example. Not even my Chapman. 😂
Great vid! I was kicking around on my Original ml2 I bought from the American road tour from 2015 today and it is still stock. Do you remember what kind of pickups you had them put it in those original runs in regards to the magnets?
Hey Chappers, just wanted to understand a bit more around the idea of a double tracking pedal. I'm imagining it's similar to the feature in Neural DSP's Petrucci plugin right? Minor ms differences, piped back out in stereo. I liked your idea of potentially a different IR though per side, so output tone is like it is coming from 2 different cabs. I like the idea of this, outside of the Quad Cortex / Digital realm, having an on/off pedal with this capability, DI / TRS to front of house, 2 distinct signal paths and an additional output to still go into a power amp. Tonex is cheap enough to do this I guess, having 2 on a single pedal board or even that new Boss IR-2 pedal is quite affordable ($300 AUD) to have 2 of them and a 1 into 2 splitter pedal in front of those. Maybe worth a video of it?
Great video! When you talk about quadruple tracking, do you mean it per guitarist or in total?
Mate, loving this content you’re putting out - all very accessible and actually entertaining to boot! Do you really think, though, that knocking on an electric guitar to find a resonant note is truly valid? Personally I disagree - for sure, it’s a critical feature of an acoustic guitar, but when your sound generators are electro-mechanical pickups, I’m not convinced of the whole tonewood theory…
Your thoughts, please?!
hi mate, I was very careful to specifically say that it will feel like it plays well, having a physics system cooperate with itself really does lend to a particular feeling when you are playing the instrument, no, I don’t think it will make any maybe just the slightest change in time Really depending on the kinds of sounds you want to make, but it definitely makes a difference to the way that big guitar feels when you play it
really good pills , i compketely agree the one about to play with better musicians , it's how once at least at my time it was the only way to learn something.
luckily nowadays and tanks for the net there is much more
These are gems Rob. Thank you. And by the way, what do you mean by saturation on the last advise? Is it distortion level?😅
Yes that’s right dude
Hi Rob
Maybe you should check "Keely 30ms automatic double tracker "
Works wonders. It isn't really second guitarist but for live performance it is as close as you can get. Not even that bad of a price for two hundred.
Hi Rob the TC electronic Mimiq does the guitar duplication thing you mentioned at the end it makes your guitar sound a fair bit bigger they do a mini version too
I refuse to appease the mighty algo,, bugger heh heh merry Noel!!
Pretty great info Chappers. I personally run everything though a Helix. But i find myself missing the amp in the room. Love from NOLA USA.
You know what I’m actually thinking about, just starting all over again, sending all of my gear and just buying a bunch of beautiful old valve amps, I’m just curious to see if I would be happier with my Tone
@@RobChappers definitely possible! I played a fender Princeton recently and loved the response from it
I belive TC Electronic Mimiq simulates double tracked guitar for live playing and the normal size one is stereo so you can send it at two diferent amps for that phat guitar sound
ok these are awesome and I am only on the 3rd...
I'll no doubt be referring back to this! I might be outing myself with this question but why not! In terms of double tracking and upwards, for lead lines or guitar lead melodies in the context of instrumental guitar, would you double track those or use a spreader as your preference? Thanks dude!
Hi Jack, good question, I definitely wouldn’t double track lead guitar - that’s more of an EQ thing. It’s important for the rest of the track to leave space for the “vocal” so if you want big lead guitar like Joe Satriani it needs to be fat and bright and the rest of the instrumentation needs to give way for it.
@@RobChappers That’s super helpful dude, thank you so much! 🙇🏻♂️
Chapters and I have the same “best guitar” philosophy!
Isn't the TC Mimiq pedal an early step towards what you're describing at the end (re double-tracking?)?
They did a double track pedal, TC's Mimiq.
@7:06 what is that Chapman guitar? I love it. It reminds me of my old Gordon Smith Gypsy Thin Body II
Did you never try the TC Electronic Mimiq pedal? (the big one, not the mini). It emulates a double tracking of what you play, wiith some slight delay or nuance, and you can run it stereo out into a second amp too for added fun 🙂
If your main guitar is a single coil guitar, make sure you have a similar guitar with humbuckers. Sometimes you will run into some kind of a silly power problem at a venue and a humbucker guitar will save the day.
Wall of Sound - Devin Townsend
TC Electronic Mimiq Doubler is a up to a triple tracker pedal. Check it out if you want a doubler live!
Whats is that double cut? And the white blue flame guitar?
Hi Dude, the double cut originally was a Chapman ML2 pro which my friend Mark, from Pherotone Studio turned into a double cut, he did an amazing job. The blue flame guitar is a Chapman British workshop. ML1 - it is absolutely incredible :-)
Hello Rob. I am a big fan and have followed you on your tremendous journey on RUclips. Could you please reply where I can download/listen to the cds you showed at the end of this video. Greatly appreciated!!!
Thank you so much for asking dude, all of my music is available to stream on any platform you like! Just search “Rob Chapman”… I also have my Music for sale on Bandcamp.
I greatly appreciate the quick reply and it is an honor to text with you!!! You are a very talented person. I want to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy fruitful New Year!!!!! John from Jersey USA
I bet that Hairy Beaver sounds and feels great!!! I have one of those and keep telling my wife she needs to shave it!! 😂
🤣
What about the mimiq pedal Rob? For doubling your guitar that is.
Funnily enough, I spoke to Lee Anderton yesterday and he mentioned that, I had genuinely never heard of it, but now I guess I need to check it out :-)
@@RobChappers Cool man. I want one too. I’ve seen some demos on YT and they sound really good.
Ditto on the Mimiq. Keeley also makes the 30ms Double Tracker, which it’s basically the same concept, albeit a little more “tunable”.
@@bensepulveda71 that’s interesting, I’m a big fan of Keeley I’ll have to check that out
I want that orangish ML2 doublecut! When will you be selling those?
It was a one off custom by Pheratone Studio Mark Evans
The Mimiq does exactly that no? Mono IN, Doubled OUT in Stereo?
Fucking killer info. Thx Chappers!
Rob you mentioned there isn’t a pedal that creates extra tracks but wouldn’t the Keeley double tracker achieve that ?
Cheers
Al
Rob the best guitarist rver
The pedals on the side are the equivalent to Minecraft clips on clips under videos
-Learn to do basic work on your guitars - action, intonation, etc. (learn more if you have time)
-Play standing up, and play sitting in a classical style - playing with your guitar on your right leg doesnt translate well to playing live
-Learning other people's music (and other styles, not just metal) can teach you as much, if not more than just playing scales all day. There's a million shredders online and they tend to blend together
-Articulate playing and solid tone will make you sound well beyond your years of skill
-As with any part of your body, your fingers need rest. If you've been practicing a ton and don't notice a difference, give it a week and come back
Rob, you mentioned double tracking. I’m assuming you do that on your RUclips videos? If so, are you legit record a whole other track? Or do you just copy and paste the initial track then play around with it?
None of my RUclips demonstrations are double tracked so that you hear the real instrument
Automatic double tracking pedal? TC Mimiq. Keeley 30ms. Empress Effects Multidrive. Most modelers. There are lots of ways to get different aspects of the effect. None of them are as good as actual double tracking, of course. But getting some aspects live or for a part you’re having trouble reproducing close-enough…there are pedal options out there.
Can you arm 4 or 5 tracks and drop different plugins in each? (GTR2 or Helix native) EQ the tracks differently and pan? I never heard the elastic band trick. I want to try that.
I have tried creating an additional take by using chorus and playing with delay, but really it just never sounds as good as playing that extra take 🤘🏽
Another tip: Time spent doodling around is not practicing, but still better than time not spent doodling around.
14:59 👍
would one guitar down the middle not interfear with vocals in amix cos of shairing simular frequenices?
Nope, all just needs to be EQ’d properly to make space
@@RobChappers get that mate any ideas ofd frequencies to avoid? also am i thinking right that you reemember west star music shop in twickenham in the 90s?
8:00 you left out Rare Exotic Toanwood!
Mimiq pedal rob, tc made that already right.
Not a big fan of Behringer, so I would give that a miss, but I had no idea it existed!!
@@RobChappers well give it a look see, petrucci and bea use it if I’m not wrong.
I'm down to 12 guitars. They are all so different in sound. All price points.
Don’t stop the ai… it’s become Monty python esque at this time
hi
Hello friend
Tip 16, learn how to gurn. Facial expression is everything.
🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
