    A couple months ago, I was noodling around and discovered this same scale shape. I didn't know what mode it was, but I thought it sounded cool and started riffing on it. It's so cool that you made a video about this to let me know what mode it is. It's nice to know that my musical ear isn't off kilter.

    Great lesson and I learned something new at 49!!
    It 'might' have been worth discussing how Dorian is a 'minor' sounding mode with a Minor root chord and how to build the relevant Dorian chords from the Dorian scale:
    E Dorian - E F# G A B C# D
    Therefore your Dorian chord structure would be:
    I = Emin
    II = F#min
    III = G
    IV = A7
    V = Bmin
    VI = C#dim
    VII = D
    Far too many people don't explain how each mode has its own chord structure built from the I, III & V notes (plus the VII, and extended notes 9, 11, 13).
    For example, you're not going to play E Dorian over E major.

    That V on the wall is gorgeous tho... From my very first day with the guitar in my hands, I was playing Dorian. How sick is that? I'm totally out of music theory. It is beyond my observable universe... But this came intuitively to me.

    Wow...been playing that all my life, didn't know, don't care. Did 5 years of Music Composer Major in college in late ''60's and have been emptying my brain of all musical knowledge since then so I can hear the sound instead of think about the sound. Just one of the perks of being a "Got a real job" amateur. Love your guitars. Bought a bottle of Glenfiddich in late '80's: not a taste I appreciated. Embarrassed to admit only owning 12 guitars but a great variety: bass, short bass, 12 string electric, 4 acoustics of different sizes, the rest usual solid bodies. But, in my defense, a viola, 2 mandolins and a fiddle.

  • @NiqScott

    Two of my favourite YT guitar lessons (by anyone) are the ones you made 15 years ago, where you used this same technique to explain the modes. This is a great update, and I'm hoping that you go into more detail on the other modes in the same way. Apart from Locrian. Locrian is the Eggplant of modes.

    I figured out Dorian a little while ago, the easiest way for me to think about it is its just minor with a major 6th. I first noticed that type of thing from Kim Thayil, he had a few licks using the major 6th in minor pentatonic solos that hooked me. Great lesson man!

    I think the easiest way to learn the first modes is to nail the 5 patterns of the penatonic (lets say minor) scale, in for example E. In E from the the 12th fret you have the easiest box to learn Dorian or Aeolian pretty quickly. The rest will fall together eventually.
