  • Back in 2006 I had the amazing opportunity to create the guitar masterclass for Yngwie Malmsteen's DVD "Live In Leningrad".
The experience taught a great many things about playing fast lead guitar, because I had no choice... It was my first ever session for a label (Universal Music) so I gave it everything I had and after a month of hard work I cracked the guitar speed code - this guitar lesson will give you an insight into some of the ideas, concepts and ergonomics needed to be faster at playing the guitar.
Good luck and feel free to post questions in the comments section, I'll do my best to answer them.

Many many years ago I got married and couldn’t play drums in my apartment. So I bought a cheap tele and found a Monkey Lord that taught guitar in a way that got me hooked. Been playing ever since. 🤘🏽

This actually looks somewhat doable. Can’t say I’ve ever thought to try ANY Yngwie stuff because it looks way too fast and sounds impossible. I always loved this lick going back to when I was a kid. I’ll totally give this a go when I grab my guitar later. Classic Malmsteen that most people around our age would recognize. Great choice for a lesson!
(I just hope Yngwie doesn’t flag your video for copyright infringement as he’s known to do on a regular basis. Hopefully saying you worked on a live DVD for him will save this video from inevitable doom! 😂 I think the content you’ve done about him has stayed up in the past.)

For the record, both of those things happened! I had a blast with this routine and am definitely going to stick with it until I get faster! That second position messes me up less than I expected, but it's manageable! Thanks for sharing!

@@RobChappers i just moved from there a few years ago lol.
What a kick in the pants! Lol
You have to come over, and i am still loking for a supplier of your guitars and pedals, i want " very thing!" And the "marvelous engine" but noone here sells them.
I know we are at the bottom corner of the world, but we have a lot of musos here.
Maybe when i get over to England I'll have ro stop by the Captains store and get those and one of your Gats, not that i will play any better but it will be an awesome thing to have something of yours.
You are a major inspiration for me, everytime i see you shredding i run in to my music room and grab a guitar and play lol.

Excellent job mr chappers very useful technique to know am trying to do thunderstruck at the min particular the opening fast lick we all know and love but when i attempt to go fast it sounds not smooth and cant get my fingers enough to the correct timing for it sounds sloppy so something like this exercise is good to learn never tried it before so will give it ago and yes you should do more to super useful skill to know 😍👏🤟🎸

I have been alternate picking everything at a very slow tempo to memorize the finger positions and muscle memory and then slowly increasing the tempo. How do I keep my pinky finger from coming up so high off the fretboard on each pedal? I feel it wanting to climb up as i roll my middle finger on each pedal. (my middle finger is my longest finger)

I've been playing in D standard for so long, E standard sounds weird. Anyway, nice lesson. I'll be trying this one, for sure. Maybe it will improve my smashed-to-pieces left hand. It'll be a slow go, though.

Great video Rob! I'm definitely going to add this to the practice routine. Quick question though, for passages where you want to (or need to) pick rather than using hammers / pulls - do you have any advice... I've been fighting with this solo for a while and progress is *very* slow... which is a little frustrating because I've pretty much got the rest of the song down almost cold...
