- 1971 Plymouth HEMI Cuda drag racing 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1
First car is a 1971 Plymouth Cuda with a 426 hemi V8. The other a 1969 Chevy Camaro with a 427 ZL1 v8. The HEMI Cuda was rated 425 horsepower and the Camaro ZL1 was rated 430 horsepower. Rear gearing for both cars is unknown. The '71 HEMI Cuda has a 3-speed automatic transmission (TorqueFlite) and the '69 Camaro ZL1 has a TH400 3-speed automatic transmission. Curb weight for the ZL1 Camaro was around 3300 pounds. Curb weight for the 1971 Plymouth HEMI Cuda was 3721 pounds. Only 48 automatic equipped 1971 Plymouth HEMI Cudas were produced. The were 69 total ZL1 Camaros made in 1969.
Remember, both cars participate in the FAST (Factory Appearing Stock Tire) series of drag racing. Please visit their website. www.fastdrags.com
Here are their rules:
ANYONE USING NITROUS OXIDE WILL BE BANNED FROM PARTICIPATING FOR LIFE!
ENGINE
2.01 Engine block must appear to be a correct* original block and must be of the same engine family and exterior size.
The block must be made from the same material as the correct* original block. Approved aftermarket replacement blocks are allowed (see list below).
There will be a 560 cubic inch limit on all engines except the Ford 429/460 based power plants which will be allowed 620 cubes.
If you think you can get more than the allotted cubic inches out of a stock production block you will have to contact the FAST Board of Director and have your combination approved prior to racing.
2.02 Dealer installed engines and dealer performed modifications are not allowed.
2.03 Cylinder Heads and Intake Manifold MUST be correct* OEM casting, have correct* original casting numbers and be of correct* original material.
This may very well be the most important and teched F.A.S.T. rule.
Note: Any cylinder head or intake manifold that is not the correct* casting number, must be approved and published on the F.A.S.T. website.
Casting date codes are not looked at and are not part of the tech process.
2.04 Internal engine modifications OK.
FUEL SYSTEM AND CARBURETOR
3.01 The carburetor must appear externally correct*.
Internal modifications are OK. Carburetor housing must be the correct* housing for your application. The stamped part number need not be correct*.
For example any 750 Q-jet can replace any 750 Q-jet as long as it externally appears correct*, but an 800 Q-jet cannot replace a 750 Q-jet, even if it does appear externally correct.
EXHAUST
4.01 Cast iron exhaust manifolds are mandatory and must be correct*, have correct* casting numbers and be of correct* material.
Under no circumstances will headers be allowed, including those cars that had headers delivered in the trunk.
Internal modifications are OK. Correct* appearing exhaust manifold paint or coatings are OK. Casting date codes are not looked at and are not part of the tech process.
4.02 Even if equipped from the factory with cut-outs, all runs must be made with closed exhaust running through the mufflers.
4.03 Exhaust systems may be upgraded to a maximum of 2.5" diameter head and tail pipes.
Exception: Certain Max Wedge cars left the factory with 3" inch head pipes, these cars can retain these head pipes up to, but not past, the transmission tail-shaft.
IGNITION SYSTEM
8.01 The distributor, distributor cap and coil must appear correct,
Distributor housing does not need to have original part number stamped in body.
8.02 Coil must be retained in the correct* location.
8.03 Aftermarket ignition boxes allowed, if mounted out of sight.
DRIVETRAIN
11.01 Vehicles that only came with 4-speeds may convert to automatics and vice/versa.
This must be done in a matter that reflects how the factory would have done it, OEM correct* shifters, linkage, consoles if equipped,
and hardware MUST be used and the conversion must look 100% correct to the FASTRACES LLC.
REAR AXLES
12.01 The rear axle housing must be of the same manufacturer as the car. OEM appearing aftermarket housings are OK.
Internal modifications are OK. Any gear ratio allowed. Aftermarket axles are OK.
Upgrade to posi-unit or spool is OK.

When I have time I will be trying to make 2 versions of some videos; one with commentary, the other shortened and without.
@@413x398 🤣
I agree! Go back and back fill the episodes without the commentary!
Please, please bring back the commentary! You have the best humor. Dirty/cheesy jokes and muscle cars are the reason i subbed.
You can have prime Rib and I will also give you meat loaf.... stick wit the prime rib !
Just take your time and do them all with commentary. We can wait.
That one was one heck of a muscle car drag race. They both were quite fast.
Yes yes...quite fast...quite fast...indeed.☝☺
That was a phenomenal race. I'm a Mopar guy and I gotta say that Chevy moves! Love seeing tight matchups like this.
They both moved, far from what the factory offered and the specs mean nothing including weights. They just have to look stock
HOLY SHIZZNET!!! I was NOT expecting that! Both cars took off like scalded cats!
This is the F.A.S.T. class, where virtually anything can be modified to the engines & transmissions internally ( NO nitrous allowed ), but must "appear stock" on the outside. Still have to run skinny street tires and factory exhaust manifolds. NO headers allowed. The ZL1 is making just over 700 hp to the rear wheels, and the Hemi is making 1,000 hp at the crank. The same guys that own the ZL1 also own a classic Corvette with basically the same engine, but cast iron block instead of aluminum. With this Corvette, they just broke the record TWICE, with their newest record being an incredible 9:28 in the 1/4 mile........and they believe they can get both their Vette and the ZL1 running into the 8's soon. Their words.......not mine.
@@howabouthetruth2157 Wow, same guy that owns this ZL1 also gotta 427 Vette, i wonder what his career consists of ? Or did he hit the Jackpot ?
@@badass6.0powerstroke10 its not a real ZL1 nor is the 427 vette a real L88 car I dont know about the Hemi car. they just clone them
@@howabouthetruth2157 That is just too cool. I really dig the idea; kind of a sleeper look...despite the ZL1 or hemi. Nobody would expect a vintage car with manifolds, column shifter, and small tires to run like that.
@@badass6.0powerstroke10 His channel is Horsepower Depot. They have several cars.
Both car's are fast! Either could win on any given day.
Not really. Give the Cuda 4.10 gears and it wins.
@@VegasRT500 I doubt it.
@@VegasRT500 Nope... Power to weight ratio. The Camaro has a slight advantage in HP and weighs about 400 lbs less. That's a huge difference. Granted the gear ratio matters, but not enough to overcome power to weight.
@@VegasRT500
It probably had at least 4:10 gears. The info only said what was available from the factory.
@@VegasRT500 I can assure you the Cuda has at least 4.10's, and gearing won't make THAT much difference anyway. Unless you're making a big jump in gearing, like from 3.08 to 4.10, there isn't that much ET to be had by doing it. There is SOME, but it's not going to be a huge jump, and if you just go from like, 3.73 to 4.10, you might pick up a tenth or so. Maybe. It's just tweaking at that point.
Now that was a drag race.
Two of the quickest and coolest rides of if the musclecar era...
Modded like that, YES. Great job on both cars. LOTS of $$$ in both of these builds. However, when I was just 13 yrs. old, I well remember in late 1971 seeing a '70 Buick GS Stage 1 beat a '71 Hemicuda in a 2 out of 3 match race at the Gainesville , FL track. Both were almost new and factory stock. That race sure surprised a lot of folks, including myself! "Speed costs money, how fast you wanna go?"
@@LR-my2di yup but it wont beat a 70
.71 had lower compression
All 1970 and 1971 and street Hemi engines (with the hydraulic lifters) were exactly the same. No changes due to discontinuance of the engine in 1971. @@andrewp1998
9s.... freakin' 9s!!!!!!!
I don't know how the hell they got those tires to grip that well, but that is the best show of these cars' true potential. The Camaro had the better ET, but the HEMI had a faster trap speed... he was catching up. And at nearly 150mph, they were both about to hit the aerodynamic wall though. LOL Holy S#!t...
Only about 1/2 mph difference in trap speed. The 'cuda wasn't catching him anytime soon.
Good thing that Camaro had all the aluminum goodies
1/2 mph difference, that's it.
Wasn't even a half mile an hour difference. It was only .09 mile an hour faster. Camaro was 142.95 the cuda was 143.04
@@chevyblue10, the Cuda is 400+ pounds heavier. Trim some weight off the Cuda, and it wouldn’t be a race. Although, it is one of the best “no fuss” races I’ve ever seen. Love both cars!
That was a Great Race with 2 Legendary High Performance Muscle Cars.
It's a Stock appearing class , nothing in these cars is stock except factory "look"
F.A.S.T. Class was invented for all the Pure Stock class cheaters. More money mentality ruins racing every time.
Yea, I realized that when I seen FAST on the windshield, a helmet on the seat....At that point I chose not to watch..I prefer pure stock from the factory
Yeah it's hard to find stock old school racing videos
Yeah stock engined car arent turning 9 s and 140 mph on 425 hp. Thats more like 800 plus hp needed
@@artbrookey3468 if it was stock the himi would win
Definitely the FAST class. What a couple of beasts!
Love watching these bad boys. Back in the day we bought our roadrunners,Chevelles, whatever the case may be. Started working on first day. So after about a month or two, wasn’t hardly no body stock. We didn’t run 9s or 10s but I guarantee we had just as much fun. Great video.
Even though my brain is having a hard time processing what I'm seeing I want to see a close up view of these things getting out of the hole. These cars being this fast is outside of my perceived reality. I want to see more.
Mopar got the holeshot.
This has to be one of the fastest mach I've seen in this channel. Awesome!!!
Two of the best muscle cars ever made. Awesome stuff
They look like jet leaving the deck of an aircraft carrier!
What dreams are made of.... What a race!!
Damn, that was one helluva race, both in the 9s on factory style bias ply tires on top of it.
imagine what they do on 275s
Love it. Short & Sweet! Man they flew.
Hemi driver got the hole shot but ZL1 reeled it in at the top end for the win. Close race and two rare classics.
Hats off to both owner/drivers and cars! Amazing!!
I guess it doesn't take a mopar to catch a mopar, just takes a 427 Camaro
Mph, son
Not just any 427 Camaro... a ZL1.
@@Welcometofacsistube Yeah, that 'cuda was catching up. I can't help but wonder if he'd have passed the Camaro before the lack of aerodynamics caught up to both of them!
Yep just an aluminum engine Camaro.
@@livewire2759 No.The 427 has a bit more horsepower well factory anyway
Wow I was NOT expecting those times and speed especially the Cuda with the 3.23 gears vs 4.10’s for the Camaro. Still can’t get over that kind of performance on Goodyear Polyglass tires as neither car looked to have no traction or lack of traction issues.
The battle of the top legends!
Built up like this, possibly so.
I understand that it takes a lot of time to do the fun versions with voice and clips - but: WE LOVE IT! :-)
Thanks for posting interresting vids of classic muscle cars drag racing!
Cool, a real sleeper version of the ZL1 with the automatic column shifter and no spoiler. Classic sleeper dragster.
Wow, a HEMI Cuda that's not a trailer queen! Love it....
Any given day this could go either way…super close
A grown man shouldn't do what I did when I saw these cars lined up!!
That's just wrong.
@@markg7030 lmfaooo
I don’t see how it’s possible to run those numbers on skinny Firestone wide ovals?
And those cars are far from stock running 143 mph! Probably double the factory HP ratings
the bald tires grip like a slick. The class is called the "F.A.S.T" class, you can read about it anywhere
Interesting that the Cuda was caged, but the Chevy was not.. In any case, the L88 was nothing to play around with. I believe it was a CC article of the time that said 1 of those in a '69 Vette produced something like 560 hp after a tune with a TH400 and 4.30 gears, and ran high 11s. Obviously these 2 cars have had more 'work' done to them, but with the Cuda 400 odd lbs heavier, as told, that thing was screaming as well!
@1.40 I see header exhaust in camaro, that's not legal in FAST class I think
It's not a L88 427, it's a ZL1
@@bluesky-ud9wg yep but the specs are the same except the zl1 is aluminum.
@@thatmechanicguy1993 , Exactly. When you bought a specialty Camaro (like a Yenko, or a Nickey) from the dealerships with the L-88 motor, it was cast iron block instead of aluminum block. It was a COPO Camaro engine, but not "THE" COPO Camaro engine that went in Camaros.
Baldwin Motion was another famous dealership who ordered specialty engines to put in Chevy's.
@@davidgraham2673 to get the aluminum heads on any big block you had to order l89. And Copo was mostly used for fleet sales not performance models. It was used as a back door. The l88 was not part of the Copo program it was the l72. Also the 427 was only offered in the 69 cars. Before that they where transplants.
Real cars... you can’t loose with ether one 🇺🇸
This should be an interesting experiment. Looking forward to seeing both. But I’m a strong proponent of silliness and pop culture humor.
It is SO cool to see these cars race & have their specifications presented! The inane BS, banter, & boyish cracks detract from the cars and races! Thumbs Up to videos like this!!!
No way those were stock running 9s with under 500hp and those trap speeds 😆😳
Yes, it’s a joke to call these cars “stock” with times and trap speeds like these, Super stock might be a more fitting description !
Its F.A.S.T. class racing. Factory Appearing Stock Tire, everything you see must be factory, its what you don't see that makes them run this hard.
Don't think either of the two are under 500 hp. Rated under 500 for insurance radar back in the day.
I was there in the late 60's, it was my generation. There were lots of fast cars & most races depended on the drivers with most things equal. At the end of the day, the big dog was always a big block Vette. Watched it go that way 1st hand for many years.
At 3:12 you see the camaro 3/4 of a car behind.... for those that think the hemi pulled on the camaro on the top end.
That Camaro is a BEAST !! 3300lbs 4.10's and a big block. Cuda was a rocket too
I grew up around Mopars. Mom, Dad and Uncle owned them. Duster, Cuda, Charger, Coronet snd Road Runners. But I love my Chevys especially the Camaros , Chevelles and ect. ✔
It takes a Chevy to humble a Mopar!
Let the whine begin...
2 Engines with factory Cylinder heads that can truly flow for big power.
The Camaro has Edelbrock heads on it. Not factory heads.
This FAST class can run ANYTHING with any size engine if it only LOOS stock. Nothing much about these are mechanically stock.
Awesome times for both vehicles! Most of these new sports cars can't pull these times off in the Quarter
Thank you, nice to not hearing someone rambling on and irritating music, it speaks for itself
Unreal, what a beautiful examples of such fine cars.
Given the sub-10 second quarter, it's safe to say that the 'Cuda is equipped with a Dana 60 with 4:10 gears. These are the two most-impressive cars yet.
Doesn't get much closer than that!
Two bueatiful pieces of Detroit muscle. Those times were so close I think it's safe to say it comes down to how well the driver does on a given day.
Wow high 9s for their times . 2 of the best muscle cars from that era .
Wow! Just wow! Those are fast cars!
Great race! These cars are not stock even close to stock. Two fire breathing demons!
Awesome!!!!
Factory Appearing Stock Tire F.A.S.T. very cool!
FWIW the ‘cuda has since run a 9.63 @ 145. Track prep has got to be a huge factor but still, these cars are complete animals and it’s incredible what these guys do on those tires.
I'm a mopar guy but that all aluminum 427 has a slight edge in performance compared to the 426 hemi but I don't need big blocks. I get the same power from a small block
@@boostjunkie2320 👍 I’m a Mopar guy too and I think the Hemi makes more power but the Camaro has a weight advantage and better weight distribution. Either way the battle rages on!
@@boostjunkie2320 Pontiac small block 455
Yes so the ZL1 would be faster also with a clean prepped track..
And the Camaro reset the record at 9.52 @145 a few months ago. Then was immediately beaten by its garage mate, an L88 Vette at 9.37 @146. They are still sciencing out those Chevys. More left in them.
Molar was definitely at the top in that era! Zl1 camaro was a force to be out of all the General Motors autos.
Couldn’t help but notice the departure from Factory Appearing with the addition of the roll bar. Actually glad to see this departure in cars running as fast as these do.
I'm surprised they let them run a full 1/4 mile. Everything has gone so far down the safety hole, it's just a matter of time before 1/4 mile tracks don't exist anymore.
great race...never seen a zL1 before with automatic on the steering wheel...awesome...
Both beautiful awesome cars but I'd still prefer the cuda, it's worth way more
I love the F.A.S.T. class because it's genuinely a sleeper class. You can have cars that look like they would run 12's off of the assembly line, and they will book it like there's no tomorrow.
Awesome race! 2 of the best!
Those ZL1s are serious race motors.
Nice race with two great cars.
That Cuda is a work of art. The Camaro is pretty sweet too.
Commentary: "That was a nice race! Up next, two Mustangs will both attempt to avoid catastrophic failures."
What these cars are doing is sooo impressive. How many big block cars with headers and slicks can’t hit these times!
Gear ratio alone tells you Cameron has it
Yep I pointed that also. Give the Cuda 4.10 gears and it wins.
Cuda doesn't have 3.23 gears in it. Come on now. The man didn't spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on this car and then not change the gear.
Both cars are obviously highly modified and making similar power. I'm guessing the lightweight aluminum block of the ZL1 gave it the edge.
Can't be that modified. They run 11s stock all day
Compression ratio is higher on the 427 and more aggressive cam
@@boostjunkie2320 11's is a far cry from 9's at over 140. According to the trap speed:weight they are both making well over 800 hp.
@@65sohc Yeah that's not hard to do with those engine's.....Simple bolt ons and a tune
@@boostjunkie2320 No. These are fully-built race engines, not a stock part on them. Over 550 cubes, super high compression, etc. There's not a "more aggressive cam" than a huge-ass roller that's in both. They both have whatever cam their engine builders think they need, no restrictions.
You can't take a stock ZL1 or Hemi and just tune it and put "bolt ons" on it and run mid-9's. No way. Plus, by "bolt ons" you'd need headers, which none of these have.
Wow way faster than i was expecting !!
What a race!
9.xx sec cars?!? What!?! Those boys were moving --- wasn't expecting that : )
awesome friggin race both cars charging hard to win no holds bared these are race cars
4:10 rear end made the difference
Great race!!
A stock Challenger Hellcat Red eye wide body would blown both them away if they all were stock!!
"And Captain Obvious makes an Appearance....."
Perfect matchup 👍
Closer than I expected given the weight difference.
WHAT IN THE HELL THAT I JUST WITNESSED...THIS TOTALLY CAUGHT ME OFF GUARD...9 SECOND SLEEPERS WITH BIG BLOCKS AND AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS WITH COLUMN SHIFTERS AND HOW LOUD AND HIGH WERE THEY SCREAMING...Its just jawdropping.
they're obviously not stock.
@@i_am_the_void Of course they're not stock. They easily must have around double the power to reach that amount of time in the quarter mile but how they look is the big surprise...and that's why they call them sleepers for a reason.
Dave is going to have to step up his game. L88 holds the current record and now ZL1's are knocking down his door. No longer takes a hemi to beat a hemi :)
Never did
In 1967 an L88 stingray destroyed Daytona. It didn't finish the race but was laps ahead leading to the wing cars. ZL1 is basically an all aluminum version of L88. HP has been estimated at 550-585 with one 4bbl carb. Hemi about 500-550 with two 4bbl carb. Both best of the best and under rated intentionally.
Usually best driver wins.

430 hp, that ZL1 made north of 500, nice to know Chevy had a sense of humor
So did Mopar when they put the Drag version of the street HEMI in the Dart in 68. They still rated it at 425 HP. It had over 600 HP in a car that only weighed 2980#.
The weight difference and the 4.10 gears in the Camaro did the trick.
now swap ratios, 3.23 chevy, 4.10 chrysler and compare, eh ? then 3.23 each then 4.10 each to make it Fun
You would be amazed at how many people don't know about gears. They want the car with all the horsepower.
Look how similar the trap speeds and ET was. The hemi was out in front until 1/8 or so. That race was won/lost at the top end. Your telling me that the gears were really that far off?
