It's interesting, as someone who has been actively playing games for all this time, I rarely ever heard about Kotaku at any point, and it only ever gets mentioned when it's something controversial.
I do appreciate how for once being controversial isn't being rewarded with attention and success however.
Started games during my mid teens in 2013 ish i believe, looked up occasional articles and guides ever since, and never have i ever seen or heard of kotaku. Never seen in any stores (granted, may be due to country), no search engine ever brought up their site, haven‘t even seen it mentioned anywhere. It must‘ve been big in the 90s or early 2000s, because it sure wasn‘t relevant for at least the past decade. All the drama they‘ve been stirring this year all of a sudden must have been a desperate ploy to get their name back out and regain some relevance, a ploy that failed spectacularly.

Then, later on, streaming sites, particularly Twitch (back when it was primarily for gaming, lol) made their situation even worse. First getting to ask questions & get feedback in the comment sections of such RUclipsrs, then see the game in real time and even request the streamer do something in particular, made the corporate middleman unnecessary. Most importantly, though, they became highly politicized a long time ago, in an area where people just want to enjoy their hobby. That, more than anything, spelled their doom. It's only corporate sponsorship, the kind of folks pushing DEI/ESG long before it became known as such, that have kept it afloat for so long.
It was never really popular that early on. They only got more mainstream traction in the early 2010's after social media had really taken off and the website became full of your typical left-wing SJW activists, and it's been that way ever since.
The political circle jerking that game journalists (and indie devs) do on social media for each other is really something to behold.
I've been playing regularly since the og Xbox days and I don't remember hearing much about Kotaku.

I remember the last time I visited kotaku, at around 2017, they had a video with an editor/journalist that was was upset about Donald trump and started saying that all games are political, and that every developer should state that "orange man bad", I commented that I am not in the USA, I am from a third world country with problems way bigger than trigger warnings, dead naming and using the wrong pronouns and game was my escapism, i dont want politics in my games, the editor/journalist replied to my message saying that "all evil needs to triumph is for good man to do nothing", I said, "wait but I have no part in that, I am neutral" she replied was, " that is your political stance, if you are no in favor you are against". I thought, well, what does that mean? After they called me a ist/phobe and I never returned. They're a bunch of fanatical activists

I genuinely can't remember the last time Kotaku was suggested to me on literally any news feed or website, but I do know that it's actually been years at this point. Nobody wants anything to do with them because they're just that maladjusted.

Nah, there's brand name potential with Kotaku. They just need to sack the activists and focus on actual gaming. Ideally by stop treating their literal audience as the enemy and then wondering why the hell everyone hates them and they get no views.
People would get on board the redemption story, but the likelihood is it crashes and burns. Very soon in fact.
The only brand reputation Kotaku has built for itself is one of a nepotistic rathole. There's no chance of a rebrand when the rot goes *that* deep.
I remember a long time ago. So very long ago. When Kotaku was a place to go to get information about games, even some really good interviews. Very hard to believe, I know, but it was once a worthwhile place way back in the early to mid 2000's.

Last time most people used Kotaku was the original MW2 leaks. They were good leaks hd pictures of all the guns/outfits/in game photos. I miss that Kotaku
Kotaku was the shit from 2013-2018. Literally I would read it every day. They had great writers on staff, senior people. Excellent journalism. Then they all started leaving, until only Stephen Totillo was left (Mike Fahey might have been last to leave but he only did a food column at that point).
I will never get tired of mr editor chiming in on these videos.
