I don't understand how can someone call someone a pedo for kissing a 17 years old girl once as a sign of accepting a gift. It's a common welcome gesture in France, Italy, Russia and many other countries where even kids get kissed on a cheek as a form of greeting and saying good bye. Yeah, Kendrick doesn't make easily digestible music. Might sound like a cop out reason for why nobody plays his music, but that's basically what it boils down to. It's not really an unheard phenomenon, if you think about it... Most people will claim classical music or technical jazz if far superior to whatever is out there, but will never play either of those genres... They will also admit poetry is superior to looking at Tumblr quotes and that a filet mignon is superior to a Big Mac and that a 6-hour Peter Jackson fantasy flick is superior to scrolling through 10 sec videos on TikTok... Yet way less people engage in the former than they do the latter...
Why? Because of digestibility... People will take the more easily digestible option every time, even if it's comparatively worse in the majority of aspects...
I will say that Kendrick used to straddle the line of digestibility a lot better 10 years ago. in the 1st half of the 2010s, he could and did make music that had many layers but was also pretty easy to digest... Nowadays not so much. Drake is on the opposite side of the spectrum. He makes music which is easy to digest but completely devoid of any sort of originality, depth, creativity. Which is the defenition of a pop artist. And despite being more digestible, a pop artist can never match up to a real artist.... Just can't happen. Again, just because McDonalds sells more Big Macs doesn't mean their product is superior toa 12 month aged filet mignon by a professional chef.
