The overarching story throughout Halo is Master Chief, the spartan, slowly realizing his humanity and becoming John, the human, again. They tried to rush it way too much and used the removal of his helmet way too early. It's crazy how they tried to claim that you can't show emotions when The Mandalorian showed exactly how to do it in live action, and it's still a fundamental part of the game franchise.
@@ShloppyShmeatit's even more ridiculous because in Halo Infinite, god damn you can know exactly how Master Chief is feeling in every cutscene. This show is just sh*t because it tries so hard to be like other famous shows like GoT to be more precise. I can't agree that Pablo "embodies master chief even out of the armor." His portrayal is too emotional, impulsive and quick to anger. He yells and has to argue too much, like no one actually respects him. The real chief's presence alone commanded enough respect to allow him the ability to speak softly and firmly. There's no powerful and mystic aura or stoicism about him. Chief speaks primarily through his body language and actions. This show fails to capture that.
Amen. The guy is probably a half decent actor, but he's not good at this role, and does not deserve any applause for his terrible performance as the Chief.
The man tried to argue that Chief's helmet absolutely needed to be removed in order for audiences to connect with him...in a time when The Mandalorian is a thing.
The thing is, nobody can embody Master Chief “even out of the armor” because the second he is seen by the viewer out of the armor that’s not Master Chief. They should have pulled a Mandalorian Season 1 and trusted their actor to carry a show wearing a mask.

I'm tired of people trying to convince themselves that it's anything but garbage. If wasn't called "Halo" I wouldn't be quite as critical, but when you use that name you set a standard, and dear Lord they did not hold to it.
It's basically the same situation that's happening with the games. If 343's games didn't have the name "Halo" stamped on to it everyone would collectively say it's bad.
yeah, i mean how hard it is to simply use the original work, like is already there wtf are they trying to make "generic badass protagonist" in a show like halo???
The story of Halo and Master Chief has so much potential to be one hell of a movie/show if it was directed by someone like Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium director)
He was responsible for the short, live action advertisement back when Halo 3 released. It had a great atmosphere and it gave the impression that humanity was out of its element with who they were fighting. I remember I finally realized how damaging the weapons were when they show a marine impaled by a spike from a spiker. It really felt like how a war like that, SHOULD have felt like….and it was for nothing more than an advertisement. It’s sad when more effort and passion is put into an ad, rather than an actual tv show or movie. Like seriously, do better….you have all that money and all those resources. Please, for the love of god….do you research and due diligence before committing to a project.
A show is not the correct medium for Halo. This show is not cheap and still looks cheap and clearly stretched. They need a $200 million dollar budget for a movie. However, Blomkamp is not even a good director.
Forget his name, but when they employed the guy who wrote the expose on the Anthem debacle I'd argue they had some. Not a lot, but some. Now it's just a black hole of integrity.
I won't accept the actor playing Master Chief, because of that interview he did, where he said the audience can't connect to a character if they don't see his face. Which is the stupidest thing to say when you are the lead actor, playing Master Chief. A character who millions connected to even if we never saw his face.
@@GG-ou7it Gods, I miss The Mandalorian. I might just have to re-watch it again. They made Mando right. Only removing his helmet when the plot called for.
I’ve gotta disagree with the Ackerson bit, he’s never presented as a villain in the novels, and it infuriates me that this show essentially puts the entire Fall of Reach off the table because he stole billions in military assets and LIED on purpose to gaslight characters for his own ego which guarantees the loss of Reach (though I will agree the actor killed it)

Even if Pablo acts his master cheeks off in this show, I don’t think he will ever be accepted as a respectable Master Chief by the fans after his whole “if you don’t agree with the helmet coming off, you don’t like our show” thing and always staunchly defending Master Chief constantly removing his helmet. At least he gained some points of respect for admitting the sex scene was a horrible idea.
It’s so funny that they’ve just completely dropped the subtlety and gone for a purely reaction-based title (“I Told You So”). You can practically _taste_ the desperation.
The moment he took his helmet off, the show was doomed. Shows you that the showrunners had absolutely no interest to make something that continues or expands the real history of the Masterchief. They wanted to write Bad fanfic and gave a Shit on one of the most tension building Secrets in Video Game History, masterchiefs identity. Cant be that hard to find an actor thats willing to wear armor and a helmet all the time. Or throw Money at a Stuntman and let him Play the masterchief while hiring a good actor to do the voiceovers... Nah they fucked it up big time
Honestly the comment you made about the flashlights brings up one of my main issues with the Halo live action series. The Technology of the UNSC, it goes back and forth constantly. Having condors DECADES before the halo games timeline, but not having flashlights that can turn on? Having the grappleshot from halo infinite, but not having IFF Transponders?! Being able to quickly and completely translate and solve ancient alien puzzles, but...not having hazmat suits?!

the way that season 1 was made and talked about by the producers was such a slap in the face that no matter how good any new seasons are we shouldn't watch them its not worth our time we must show them that they can't keep taking our beloved ip and ruining it with awful shows that aren't good for fans or people who are new to it
Just rewatch the Deliver Hope live action trailer for Halo Reach, the Halo 3 live action test footage, or the Forward Unto Dawn short film. All made over a DECADE ago, with a fraction of the budget. And they all elicit more emotions, better story and most importantly they LOOK and FEEL like Halo. I cant believe we waited 10+ years after those released for this garbage. God knows when we'll another chance at a live action Halo adaptation, if ever.
I still love that fight in Forward Unto Dawn between Master Chief and the Hunter. Master Chief sticks a plasma grenade into the Hunter’s back, then backflips away and it’s such a badass fight.
Every time I skip a video, it gets reuploaded with a different name, then I finally watch it. It's strange to me that it always happens when I don't watch someone that I usually watch daily

Almost like having showrunners who couldn't give one shit about the source material would lead to a bad show. Halo is so interesting and has so many cool themes... That get tossed out of the window. Such a shame man
Honestly not even the game makers seem to seek to make an artistic product, at least not one that both sells well and can have an emotional impact in the audience, its just a product, another piece for a production line, akin to modern Star Wars (in the movie side) and Assassin's Creed (in the game side). If even 343's known activity over this series has anything to say, this is just another attempt at getting more quick profits with no care for the long-term, using a fanbase that is curious over how their game would work as a tv show.
@@TheShadowguy138 What's worse is that there's literally nothing we can do about it. People with no standards/fake fans will always just come to argue should you make any criticism for star wars or Halo, or any other media that got treated the same. So Halo will still be raking in millions for Microsoft, and they won't ever stop agreeing to make bad content for Halo if it means more money.
The insane part to me is how the writers, specifically on The Acolyte but it’s the same problem here I’ll bet, brag about hiring people who don’t know anything about the source material/canon to work in the writers room. Last thing I saw him in was playing "Brother Blood" in that crappy live-action "Titans" series over on HBO Max, and once again, he was the best part about the show's final season. If he's in Halo Season 2, I might have to actually go give it a watch, just for him.
I’ve said this time and time again. It’s not the actors, it’s not the cinematographers, and it’s not the special effects team. They’re doing great. IT’S THE WRITERS.
The only thing that I hate more than this show is everyone who fell for the marketing scheme that wanted us all to spread the word that “season 2 is so much better than the first season because there’s a different showrunner and they learned from their mistakes and blah blah blah.” Like how gullible can you be.
Arguably it is much better than season 1 but as stated in the video that is no praise at all - this season was watchable. However this is not what anyone wants other than those behind the decisions of this show. We could easily have had a main universe story, the budget is CLEARLY there, I believe the cast was done very well too, the story as well as how it was implemented are the hard hitter downfalls.
@@Krosshairbbyg it’s a perfect continuation of the first season or, in other words, it’s just as offensively bad to long time halo fans as season 1. The writers keep treating halo like a brand new experiment when the books and games have already established everything a show could ever need to know about the world. The themes, the characters, the story, the battles and events, it’s all there. And yet they get it all wrong. It’s just crazy to me how one of the big selling points for this season was the fall of reach and that turned out to be a huge disappointment that couldn’t even live up to the game let alone the book because they were to busy filling up screen time with kwan and Soren and other bullshit. And I’m still on the side that is adamant that Chief should never be shown without his armor and Steve Downes should absolutely be the voice because he is the voice of master chief.
@@TinkerTailorSailorTy ehhhh I get that most people feel that way, I think chief without his armour is fine if we put it in a scenario like him back on base not in operations. But when it's him fighting on Reach without his armour, it's soul destroying to me. I agree with you - just for reference, Game of Thrones was adapted from the books but because of lack of source material (writer George RRM) / didn't finish his last book, the directors fumbled with awful writing or at least that's how it seemed. They did brilliantly with the source material that was available through the many seasons they had. Halo is no different or arguably it's in a better position because there is SO much source material. There is no excuse for what has been developed. No excuse good enough for this idea of another universe. They have alienated a huge part of their audience.
@@Krosshairbbyg The thing is halo really didn’t need to be a show but rather a movie. I don’t think we need to see so much of Master Chief’s personal life outside of missions because ultimately he is a spartan who was bred for combat. That being his purpose is kind of the tragedy of his character. His life can pretty much be broken down like this: 50% of his time is spent in a crypbay (gotta get the most mileage out of that limited batch of spartan IIs), 25% he’s in the field on a mission (especially during the height of the war), and the other 25% he’s either training or preparing for missions. And all the other plot stuff is what character like Jacob and Miranda Keyes, Johnson, Lord Hood, Halsey, maybe some ODSTs etc are for. So I don’t exactly think Chief should be a character that we want to relate to as much as they seem to think so. It’s like they’re trying to rectify the tragedy that defines him by going “wow look how human he is, look at his face, it’s very human isn’t it? Isn’t that just heart warming to know he’s a human just like us?” Showing his face shows a complete lack of understanding of what Chief is and a complete disregard for bungie’s intention for the character.
It's sad seeing so many journalists and Halo fans huffing copium to convince themselves the show isn't bad. I miss the Bungie-era Halo, how the hell did 343/microsoft green light this?
Because Microsoft doesn't care about Halo as a game or a franchise. They see it as a money generator, that's it. They heard TLOU was getting a show and they thought "we need to get in on that", purely as a business decision.
@@csnorth7Halo has pretty much been a wet fart ever since 343 took over. Infinite was a step in the right direction, but how the fuck do they not understand the IP.

The give it to a writers room who has no idea wtf to do with it and obviously mixed other shitty scripts with the Halo IP.

Something that would’ve been good instead of the flashlight tunnel scene would’ve been active camo instead of the dark hallway, they start clearing rooms and slowly one by one, they start losing marines.
I just don’t get it. It’s like - they had an incredible, award winning, masterpiece of a story on a gold platter. And they purposely bastardize and reduce every part of it. Everything that mattered, the gravity of the plot, removed. Arbiter? A bitch pawn enforcer of a senseless human covenant spy. Brands HIMSELF a traitor to no fanfare or show, then immediately gets beaten to death after a short fight with Chief. His importance squandered. Given to Makee who they know most people hate the idea of. The Flood was meant to be a result of the Covenant’s ignorance and attitude. Here, it’s some basic accidental infection because a scientist broke basic safety rules and touched an unknown substance from a test tube and frolicked in the Onyx lab from its control or something. The Fall of Reach was way too brief and under-expressed. Lacked the depth of importance and mass destruction of a planet full of billions of people being annihilated. The military complex of humanity. Felt like a town was sacked. The Spartan IIIs are a joke here. They went way too hard on the mass sacrifice and don’t know what they want them to be. Are they trained for years since children like in the books? Some characters act like they have been, but are scared of battle for no reason. Or are they adult volunteers like Perez? Both? They purposely do stuff that are the major complaints of the series. We don’t like Kwan? They force her into the major plot by giving her mystical shaman powers. We don’t like Makee? They RAISE HER FROM THE DEAD and make her the Arbiter’s handler and replacement. We want more armor? They literally have someone take it away from the characters so they can’t use it. They seem to think the Covenant is made up 90% of Elites. Where are the grunts? We see way more of them than we do of grunts or jackals. They don’t care about feedback. It’s not redeemed in the slightest. Every point they touch, they bastardize and ruin. They took the story of Halo, abandoned it to die of starvation, buried its corpse in a shallow grave, exhumed it’s rotting remains, blended it’s contents in liquid excrement, and served it with a fresh coat of paint. It is sad and frustrating to me that this is some people’s only experience with Halo.
You ripped every thought from my head... could not agree more and it is so aggravating that some Halo fans actually "like" this shit... all because it taunts some aspects of the art style, armor, weapons, and characters from the game. Case and point, everyone was hating on this show, (for the most part), before this last episode, and now with the last episode, (the exact same garbage as before basically) they then introduce the flood and everyone is now saying it redeemed itself... all cause we got "fan-service" and saw the flood on TV... LIKE WTF
@@CJDevo117 yeah exactly. Get a taste of the bare minimum expectation for once and suddenly all is forgiven. And even the flood is introduced in a lackluster and soulless way

its written by Alyssa Mercante who if I am not mistaken is the same person who wrote the lie filled slander piece against Kabrutus and his Sweet Baby Inc Detector. that's all you need to know to understand how bad the halo article is.
This show is actually offensive. Halo fans fought for years to have lore canonized and to make a beautiful cohesive timeline. These showrunners took all that lore and story and Haloness, carpet bombed it, but the pieces in a bag, shook it up and dumped it on a story board. And then re-wrote it anyways.
My mom is so hype about Halo 2 and she doesn’t even know anything about the game series. It’s so frustrating that she keeps arguing that the series is different from the game and so it’s not possible to pay respects to the original work while also making something new. First and foremost it’s an adaptation and not a tv series.
Is this satire? Haven't watched the show, but if regular people are having fun with it, it seems like they made a good choice. I truly and honestly do not care about faithfulness of adaption if it's good enough to stand on its own. The original work is still there if you prefer it, like literally who gives a fuck if adaption is not for you.
@@marko39383 This is not satire, I’m allowed to flame my own mother for not being able to see the whole picture. I recognize that wether or not it’s a faithful adaptation may not matter to some people and how much they enjoy it is subjective. But when choosing the name “Halo” you’re inherently setting expectations and connecting your adaptation to the original work. It is quite honestly just foul how they can maim the Title of Halo and use it to capitalize from fans of the series for pure financial gain. If “Regular people” enjoy it, then hell yeah good for them. But if they don’t care about how other people are perceiving it and don’t care about the consequences that supporting a work like this has? Then they’re selfish. I suggest you watch the series before you make such blatant statements, who cares? That's not the Arbiter that we know from the games. "Arbiter" is just a ranking in the covenant. If the show gets renewed for another season, we might get the Arbiter that we're familiar with in a future season.
But this show isn’t made for the fans. The show runners have said this numerous times, just like with Rings of Power, various super hero projects, and the upcoming Fallout show. I can kinda defend that last bit, since Halo 2 onward the actual Halo structures had less and less appearance.
The mentality of the producers probably went "yeah this is a videogame, and videogames are for children, so let's do the show more mature, let's add exaggerated emotions to the characters, let's add nude and sex scenes and let's add a ton of new characters, because people love a show with ton of characters right? So they won't get boring for seeing the same guys" damns idiots, a Halo show was my dream as a kid, and they ruined it
Also if I’m not mistaken Spartans including chief don’t like taking their armor off too long. As it makes them feel vulnerable I think.
@@chickenmaster66 Makes sense given how heavy the things are. We'd feel vulnerable naked outside of spaces we feel safe and secure. I'm sure it feels the same.
That's his appeal as a character to me. He sacrifices his own humanity
Yeah how you said it is how it felt playing the entire franchise. Master Chief is basically a living legend to people
The thing is, nobody can embody Master Chief “even out of the armor” because the second he is seen by the viewer out of the armor that’s not Master Chief. They should have pulled a Mandalorian Season 1 and trusted their actor to carry a show wearing a mask.
And badass one liners

The story of Halo and Master Chief has so much potential to be one hell of a movie/show if it was directed by someone like Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium director)
Underrated director
He also directed Chappie and worked on Gran Turismo, I love most of his films, I think he would be perfect to help direct the show
That was the plan until it got cancelled and so Blomkamp made District 9 reusing some of the props he had designed for Halo.

Honestly not even the game makers seem to seek to make an artistic product, at least not one that both sells well and can have an emotional impact in the audience, its just a product, another piece for a production line, akin to modern Star Wars (in the movie side) and Assassin's Creed (in the game side). The insane part to me is how the writers, specifically on The Acolyte but it’s the same problem here I’ll bet, brag about hiring people who don’t know anything about the source material/canon to work in the writers room.
Same shit 343 keeps doing. People get fired or quit, new people come in, & it's still the same shit every time but the fans always fall for it.

And even the flood is introduced in a lackluster and soulless way
They went the zombie route for the flood? A scientist (who should know better) touches a random alien substance then starts a flood infection? Sounds like every zombie movie ever made.
Fallout show will be like this, guaranteed ruined and dead on arrival.
Ironic how in the current climate of wanting "representation," they chose literally the most privileged Covenant species, aside from the San Shyuum.

The person who wrote that article is currently in some drama for misrepresenting an interview for boob physics.
My mom is so hype about Halo 2 and she doesn’t even know anything about the game series. It’s so frustrating that she keeps arguing that the series is different from the game and so it’s not possible to pay respects to the original work while also making something new. First and foremost it’s an adaptation and not a tv series.
Make her play halo 2 on legendary
@@ShitboxFlyerLASO
I do obviously, Supporting this damages both the video game and movie/series industry and lowers the bar for future content and allows people to be manipulated into consuming bad works. You might not care but remember, my opinion is solely my own. And you’re the one that came here in order to respond to my comment, but nooooo you came here and said “literally who gives a fuck” to a person who quite obviously gives a lot of fucks and to my face tried to invalidate my opinion?

Imagine killing off the arbiter and having Chief be the one that kills him.

Remember: they didn’t look at any of the games (as in the actual source material). Who writes a show without knowing anything about the source material?!
That's not the Arbiter that we know from the games. "Arbiter" is just a ranking in the covenant. If the show gets renewed for another season, we might get the Arbiter that we're familiar with in a future season.
its not even THel Vadam.
Imagine coming up to a chef and saying "your food is... edible"
I got an ad for the show before this 💀
This show does have potential, as some of the snippets reveal, but it's just not living up to expectations. The fans deserve better.
But this show isn’t made for the fans. The show runners have said this numerous times, just like with Rings of Power, various super hero projects, and the upcoming Fallout show. When will people learn that when the creators say “this is not for the fans”, they shouldn’t to touch the project. It will only disappoint them
Yet is the fans sad-watching it that keep this show alive, i assure you.@@lawrencetalbot8346
@@lawrencetalbot8346never understood that. The fans are literally who u want to please for a good adaptation. Look at FNAF. Fairly standard horror movie, but the accurate lore and general fan service made it more enjoyable than it would have been otherwise

Crazy how that old Forward unto Dawn / ODST movie was better than the entire paramount show.
Forward Unto Dawn was pretty kickass
Ngl anytime I hear about the show it just makes me want to go watch Forward Unto Dawn.
It's funny how a low-budget Halo movie is 100x more accurate to the source material and has a better story than the terrible 'Halo' webtoon show.
The arbiter dies to chief and Halsey gets infected by the flood all before chief is on the ring for an hour.
Thanks for moving the camera back, Charlie :) 👍
The only thing that’s impressive imo is how well the actual Spartan suits look for practical costumes, it’s a shame we just hardly get to see them.
Lol I was thinking about that the entire time while watching the show. The spartan armor looks spectacular in all of their variations, but they chose to focus on the narrative outside the damn suit 🤦🏿
Video title went from "Halo TV show is still bad" to "Kotaku is Trash Journalism" to "Kotaku is Trash" mid watch. lmao
An yet, all of them valid arguments to the point.
a post talked about how the MC touches an ancient alien artifact, a threat that killed said aliens, sex and romance, its just mass effect
It really isnt, the only reason it ''resembles'' mass effect is the first one, but thats just a trope. The second is literally from Halo and the sex and romance would only apply if there was gay alien sex.

To think in an alternate timeline we would’ve gotten a Halo film directed by Neil Blomkamp and produced by Peter Jackson.

There are so many videos online that prove you can do a halo series where spartans dont take off their helmets 24/7. Best canon examples off the top of my head are the prequel series to Halo 4 and Halo Legends

"Money in hand please Paramount"

I was 9 when CE came out, the flood scared me so much I actually stopped playing for two weeks. The game is so colorful and action packed, and then your entire world gets turned upside-down, scary music starts playing and now you're fighting zombified humans and aliens out of nowhere.

Instalation00 has been meatriding this show since it came out, which really makes me cringe because it's such a slap in the face to Halo fans
Some of the backlash Instalation00 got was kinda gross and uncalled for, but I'm not gonna lie that video he made defending the show was terrible. I didn't watch him much before since he focused almost entirely on 343 era or Spartan related stuff, but I certainly haven't since.

The core aspect of Halo, the Covenant, had like maybe 20 minutes of screentime in the first season, and still very little in season 2. Not to mention, a show called Halo, barely mentioned any Halos.
It's like they do not understand *any* of the most important elements from the games, namely, you know *HALO*, The Covenant, Master Chief and Cortana, Johnson, The Flood(although we did finally get it), and finally the Forerunners.

I can kinda defend that last bit, since Halo 2 onward the actual Halo structures had less and less appearance. The last mission in Halo 3 was the only time in that game you actually stepped foot on a Halo ring, and it wasnt even finished. As long as the writing and plot direction is good, you can have a Halo show devoid of any Halo rings.
Covenant? You mean the elites, brute and handful of jackals? lol
I remember, once upon a time, enjoying reading Kotaku articles.

Well, first they said they restricted the employee’s rights, then the number of people they employed dropped from 16 to 12.
Put two and two together, yknow.
They should have just made a boots on the ground story following Sgt Johnson and his group of marines and really just make the master chief a larger then life figure who’s seen as a hero who saves the day and vanishes. That can be 1 great season of a show actually worth watching.
After that focus on another character rinse and repeat second season can be about Buck and his ODST’s you can show them supporting noble Six and squad on reach depicting the fall of reach. Make noble team look like larger then life heroes.
To me I can just imagine being on the battlefield and the feeling of relief and ordinary marine or even an ODST must feel when a Spartan starts coming from the rear and starts decimating the enemy and would be a story I would love to watch.
I saw “Halo” and “two sticks” in the same sentence and I got excited
Remember when reviews were about the thing being reviewed and not the reviewer talking about how they think they know better than the reader?
the writer is a former camgirl specializing in poorly-done hitpieces, not a reviewer
They probably only put Chief in his armor a couple times per season because they can only afford one armor suit and they don't want it to get ruined
