- David Marquet, retired US Navy Captain and Expert on Leadership and Organizational Design, is the bestselling Author of Turn The Ship Around. David Marquet (MAR-KAY) was assigned to command the nuclear powered submarine USS Santa Fe, then ranked last in retention and operational standing. He “turned his ship around” by treating the crew as leaders, not followers, and giving control, not taking control. This revolutionary approach not only took the Santa Fe from “worst to first” in the rankings, but also created more subsequent leaders than any other submarine. Stephen R. Covey called the Santa Fe “the most empowering organization [he’d] ever seen” and wrote about Captain Marquet’s leadership practices in his book, The 8th Habit.
Captain Marquet is the author of Turn the Ship Around! A True Story of Turning Followers Into Leaders. Fortune magazine named it the #1 must-read business book of the year, and USA Today listed it as one of the top 12 business books of all time. David Marquet is here today to deliver the powerful message that in highly effective organizations, leadership is not for the select few at the top; he will tell you how he and the crew of Santa Fe developed a way to create leaders at every level.

"Act my way to thinking (differently)" - I liked the idea of changing the environment to be more team-oriented without saying a lot of words.
Marquet is truly amazing!
I like that Marquet comes across as a goofy dad, when you picture submariners as hardened sailors 😂 His book is incredible by the way, learned a lot from it!
From experience: Lots of goofy dads on my submarine. USS TUNNY SSN 682
That was an awesome talk. Wish I'd been there...
I really enjoyed your video. There were a lot of thought provoking myths and facts in there, enough for me to start changing some of my leadership behaviour. I especially enjoyed the toilet scene. That is engineering at it's finest.
awesome speech
Great presentation, thank Capitain Marquet!
Damn, that 45 minutes flew by fast!
Awesome
That is really is really good.
Every other person wants to be a leader, wants to run a company. Only few will actually invest 45 minutes of their lives on videos like this.
Why would I listen to this bullshit for even five minutes? ;-)
No, not every person wants to be a leader or own a company.
@@sneakerbabeful I agree and stand corrected.

Awesome but after 6 years I now know.. hmm. A bit behind but well it's great and I'm glad to know this.
"Hello everybody, welcome to toxic google"
12:07 #SeniorCopywriterTeamLead
"That was me in high school" - best line hahaha #GodSpeed
This guy 100% right.
34:00 - as hard as it is to make small decisions in times of crisis...that's your waiter too. Don't defer decision-making that much. What do you want to eat? You can handle saying ir.
Captains Mast, UCMJ........ Things I think about when the dude says he's a Captain.
Did he say "Welcome to toxic Google"? I think he did say that.
11:26 you get could 30 secs out of that joke ;)
37:20 how ironic.
15:38 a designated hype man...it's not a bad idea. Why do cheerleaders exist in the first place?
OK, if he ran his boat the way he talks, we are lucky that WW III didn't happen. ;-)
Not everybody is a leader! They are not all leaders, that’s false encouragement because not everyone has the qualities to be a leader! Lots of things wrong with this conversation
Not everyone is a born leader. Anyone can be coached and groomed to lead if the passion is there.
He lost credibility when he said women on submarines is great. No place for women on a submarine.
Actually *you* lost your "credibility". Ass.
There are no women or men on a submarine.
There are only Sailors on USS Submarines.
Hold them accountable and train them and empower them and watch them do amazing things for their country and for each other.
Why is there no place for women on a submarine?
Also, consider this guy's bonafides. Now consider yours. Why do you think you know better than a nuclear submarine captain about what's great and what's not re: naval command?
Seems to me your credibility was shot from the very moment your brain farted out its first thoughts here.
