Leader's eat last. I learned that as a junior NCO in the Army. One day, while training out in the field at Fort Hood, we took a break for lunch. As one of the trainers, I needed to get something to eat right away and return to the training site to prepare for the afternoon training. A senior NCO caught me trying to eat first. I tried to explain why I was doing this, but the Sergeant was not impressed. He explained to me that my soldiers always got to eat first and then then the NCO's ate. I immediately understood why that was. 20-years later I retired from the Army but still remember that incident.
A couple years after I retired from the Army, I ran into one of my former soldiers. After some small talk, he made a comment to me that I was always taking care of the troops. That I never did anything (that was noticeable) for myself. "Isn't that the way its supposed to work" was my reply.
BTW, I now help out at my local VA Hospital as a volunteer. I work directly with our hospitalized veterans. Their needs come before my needs.

Hardest part of adjusting from Marine Corps life back to civilian life was/is the dog eat dog and each person for themselves attitude. My first management position we had an incident in our warehouse with involving one of our forklift drivers. Owner came in fuming and told me to fire the driver. When I told him that it was not the drivers fault, that we had failed to properly train him right, my boss's jaw hit the floor! Because I took the responsibility for the incident, he couldn't fire the driver. I sat down with the driver and counseled him about the incident, sent him through a proper training course/certification and he ended up being one of our best employees. Of course, that being said, my boss had no clue and still learned nothing about proper leadership.

Thank you for making such an impact on the way I think about conditions inside the organization that I work for. I am currently new in the shift lead training and my goal is to show them what a leader is supposed to be. What does it mean when you’ve seen a turn over rate of 35 managers and nobody ends up stay past one year max? Would you recommend doing the opposite of their company policy of how you should act?

Been there, I stood my ground when my boss tried to fire an employee for doing what we trained them to do. I know it was going to cost me down the road...it did. I left the company voluntarily and found another great mentor, moved forward and continued my journey to being a better leader tomorrow then today. (Simon thank you for all your content and simplicity to very complex human needs and desires)
Now, I lead a small team with online sales and teaching people how to sell and buy safely online. Still look back and consider that moment with my boss the moment with the rubber met the road for me and leadership. So, if you are feeling stuck with a decision at work, not sure what to do. DO THE RIGHT THING! I can't promise it won't hurt today or tomorrow. By constantly doing the right thing you put yourself in the right position to be found for amazing things.

It is hard to always have the courage for this kind of leadership. Truth is, sometimes I'm just so tired, while other authorities have a good life choosing the easy way (not the right). It became a daily struggle within the years, maybe I'm too sensitive. But it's really encouraging to hear Simon say all these things, to know there are others out there really working to go the right path, to show integrity. Plus, I needed to hear that you probably will be a bad leader on some days but in the long run, you'll see growth. Thanks for this video!

I have been in varying types of Organizations, and I can remember the company that allowed me to be responsible and accountable and I had the support of my leaders, I learnt the most and was the happiest. I have taken those lessons and tried in my subsequent positions - and the interesting thing I have found is people generally are VERY resistant to such ideas. Simon always reminds me that I am doing what has a positive impact, but it takes time before people see the value of your actions - but it should not stop us from doing it right.

Oxygen masks drop on an airplane, you gotta get yours on before getting others' on, or you pass out and you're part of the problem.
If you're trying to "help others" to, for example, get ripped, and meanwhile you're a six hundred pound blob on a couch, you're not a credible authority on how to get ripped.
Even in his book, he talks about how alpha lions get first dibs, in a book about "leaders eat last". That part confused me.

    • @davielgaming1200
      @davielgaming1200 3 года назад +4

There is a book about helping others but not many like to read it. It’s called the Bible and a lot of what he’s talking about is biblical principle-based. Jesus was Leader who had many followers. Interestingly, Apostle Paul, one of Jesus’s 12 disciples did was Simon Sinek does as he carried Jesus’s teachings which involved leadership in service to others. The Bible is an incredible book with many stories of Jesus his leadership and the transferring of that leadership to his disciples in empowering the people to be accountable and self righteousness with humility and service to others. Unfortunately, many religious leaders distort the Bible principles to condemn others into feeling perpetually guilty and unworthy to keep followers and their 10% plus offerings continual. Some organized religions have become a Corporatized using non profit incentives. It’s sad but once I read the Bible for myself, the truth set me free. Simon Sinek reminds me of a leadership disciple like in the Bible.

He does a great work with repeating it, because its the main problem we have to focus on.
Or did someone have a problem with Ghandi (He repeated his messages too)?
For me inspirational and i could whatch this every morning to start the day with the right feeling to lead my guys in the right direction.

He has got too much integrity for that; having integrity and politics doesn’t go together unfortunately - it’s how the systems work and how most people want it - unfortuantely. We humans probably don’t deserve it cause we’re too blind and caught up in our egos

I want to add in an observation. I've always found that a great team includes a weak member; like in Ice age movie series : the sloth; avengers movies: hawkeye. They're, weak, but also act as the glue of the team. Once they gets removed, the team falls apart; reintroduced these weak characters and the team gets back in.
I think the idea is that these people act as a reassurance that the trust exists. If it weren't, this guy wouldn't be here.

One way for leaders to make the workplace feel safe is to remove the toxic elements from the building. Just like not everyone is born to be good leader, not everyone is born to be a good worker.
This means have the courage and/or work ethic to actually remove trash from the job and not keep them around stinking up the place while earning a paycheck they did not deserve. Is there ever a good reason to buy large number of laptops to be distributed to employees only to leave them in the warehouse for more than 2 months?
If you ever wonder why government services appear slow or quality bad; it is because the so-called leaders don't want to spend the effort to fire worthless employees. This forces other workers to pull double-duty often doing tasks they were never train to do. They get the blame if things go wrong while the do-nothings get a free ride.

I agree with part of your sentiments but disagree with you referring to other human beings as "worthless" and "trash" that stink up the office space. I believe that every human being/employee is worth something if equipped with the right training in a noninjurious environment.

@@A28CB It's the environment that creates the employees right, obviously there are always exceptions, outliers, but if the correct environment is created, they are forced to adept to their surroundings, evolution works in small scale aswel. The mentality of the "bad" or "toxic" employees will change accordingly, although sometimes slow, sometimes even slowing down the progress of the other employees. Also often the people who are "toxic" are feeling unsafe in the environment and use toxicity as a way to defend themselves from this unsafe feeling or are dealing with things outside of the company. Allow them to feel at ease, to open up, go to them and ask if there is something going on when they are being toxic. Also it's not simply a solution to fire the "toxic" or "bad" employee. Subconsciously firing that employee, will perhaps affect your other employees, they might not get along, but they can relate, they can still affect each other positively or negatively.
