This is mastery in public speaking. Pauses where needed, voice fluctuation on point, everything about this talk is to learn from, not just the content.
1. You can go after whatever you want, in the way you want, but you cannot prevent others from going after what they want 2. Sometimes the Problem is YOU 3. Learn to Receive and Give Help 4. Learn to Be the Last to Speak - a. gives others they have been heard b. you get benefit of hearing what others think first. Seek to Understand their Why. 5. You will always deserve the Styrofoam cup/your position is NOT you = Remember Humilty
+transplantclub: Your list is almost perfect, but I think the second point needs to be amended to "Learn to recognise and take responsibility for your failures as well as celebrating your successes". "Sometimes the problem is you" is just something he said on the way to making the actual point.
Now it hit me, being last to speak not only a decision making process, but also a kind gesture to let others speak. But what we see is a competition, a power exercise of who gets to speak last.
One of my professors presented me with his speech about starting with why. I have continued to listen to Simon's speeches and appreciate all of his messages. I'm absolutely thankful for that professor for introducing me to Simon's wisdom.
I just admire and salute this wonder man called Simon Senik. His Start with Why and Golden Circle have never stopped amazing me. I use them, in my workshops as well as in my life. There is a lot to learn from him. 1. He ignites sparks. 2. He makes them so so so simple. 3. He is so authentic.
Simon, I have listened to your "Styrofoam cup" presentation multiple times and it continually resonates with me. After 30+ years with the US government and DoD (US Air Force) I’d noticed (Long with Rules 1-4) many of our leaders have forgotten Rule #5. Simon, you and I are both Hugh Fans of Mr. Bob Chapman's (St Louis, MO) Truly Human Leadership model that current day leaders SEE PEOPLE AS OBJECTS OF OUR THEIR OWN SUCCESS have forgotten about caring of people (No the profits and position) so those people can take care of the mission. I wish your "Styrofoam cup" message could get out to our Freshmen Congresspeople, Future (Ivy League graduates) Corporate business managers and our military leaders (early and often) throughout their careers. Then repeated multiple times over as a reminder the “The Nice Ceramic Cup (Corporate Jets, Hotel Suites and Large Entourages) were never meant for them, just the position they hold.” Your message starting with the Under Secretary of the Air Force (12:50) and summarizing with seeing General Schwartz at the Acela Express (15:27) in Washington DC, then so brilliantly summarized (14:25). Thank you
Listening and appreciating Simon Sinek's philosophy on matters of life, learning and attitudes resonates strongly with me. I find he is in tune with many teachings of the Dalai Lama whether he is aware of that or not. I enjoy the uplifting messages Simon has to offer.
I already saw this speech somewhere else and I thought that it was mind-blowing. Number 4 is my favorite. I am a total empath, but it's true that I shouldn't advise/speak my opinion before I come to understand the other's "capacity" of understanding their issue first. I shall speak last from now on! Thanks, Simon Sinek
I am usually not a big fan of motivational speeches, since I always find it is some kind of of word games mask the ugly reality. But Simon, he is worth listening, there is some genuine sense of his words, and humility in power of waking you up peacefully than shook you to death and force to be awake
I just heard this guy for the first time. My name is robby Harmon. Everything that Mr. Sinek has stated is so true. On behalf of everyone who needed to hear this, we Thank you for not being like the other 99% of the world and being more like the 1% who wont lie to catch a like but tells it like it truly is. To all younger generations, please listen to this Man and hear his words. I pray you all needing this listen will hear it for what it really is. And I pray you act on his points and adapt them into your lives. This is how we save humanity as a whole. Thank you and God bless you
So many dissing on the intro, I think it had style and jazz! it's easy to criticize, especially in this format! ---Sinek is the MAN! as someone needing advice in being a better leader, I listen very closely and hope to instill some of these values more in my practice. Easier said than done. Peace!
Keith Wilson do you even know why those qualities produce a leader? There's 5 levels of leader and every one past level one require confidence and power yes. However gratitude and humility are required 10 fold. To make the calculation easy that's a multiplier of 1,024. Because people skills are what is required for success. Be confident yes, and also develop humility so that you can be effective with others just as you breed confidence to be effective with yourself. Confidence alone creates success to the leader level of 1 because there you only lead yourself. Plus at level one, people who are victims definitely loose the success to those who are level 1 leaders "leading the people they themselves are". Just as those who develop only confidence loose their success to those who develop humility far beyond the confidence they have since they have more then their own strength, they have the strength of those around them, added to theirs at first but the higher the leader the more that effect multiples. If this makes no sense watch simeons other video describing this in the world of business using players of finite vs infinite games called nobody wins ruclips.net/video/pXOAnQfet-Y/видео.html
I agree with you a ton I used to put down motivational speakers for giving false hope and what not. But They actually have some points here and there I randomly found this video but I'm glad i did even if I never meant to. Would love too see more of simon and more like him
I totally agree !!! I have been using this concept at University, and corporate companies. The result: I got fired!!! Here, in Brazil, this concept is no so much welcome, as I discovery toooo late... It is a pit!! So, after so many tries, I am a bit frustrated. Indeed!! But I still get going... and, maybe, one day, I will get my job back, if I still alive... Anyway, I still respect, admiral you and I wish you all the success that you deserve it. Gratitude 🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻
The story of the styofoam cup is one I haven't heard before. I have watched so many of Simon Sinek's talks and even though there are similarities I always gain something new and special from them, even when I rewatch! I love that I live in a time where people like him have already established such a clear vision of something I only had inklings of in the past. Im truly inspired and grateful for these talks.
Wow, Simon Sinek's words are just inspirational, you are the great leader you really do the best and have the rest to do great things, thank you for having you!
My strong, smart son went through buds training @Coronado to be SWCC, (they are watercraft Seals essentially, they deliver the seals) the camaraderie and encouragement for and of his cohort brothers were probably some of the best lessons of my son’s life. He is an amazing martial arts trainer now.
Simon simply shines so strongly that you don’t need to do much in order to get on his playful success vibes. You can Learn by embracing it fully, expanding experience.. we can make it if we can imagine it... (Einstein) tho if we can experience ‘it’ through somebody we may just cut through ..
Found your spark, now what? 1. Determination - Go after what you want while not preventing people from getting what they watn 2. Self-accountability - Sometimes the problem is you, take responsbilities for your actions 3. Help - Make it your habit to offer and receive help from others 4. Understand - Listen to your teammates, consider everyone's thoughts fully, and be the last to speak (in sections of conversation) 5. Humility - As you get famous and high-ranked, don't be entitled to what you receive from others, because everybody deserves the same treatment as normal people at the end of the day.
If you don't find a means of multiplying your money, you will wake up one day to realise that the money you thought you had, has exhausted. Investment is a ladder to climb the financial wall.
I agree with you mate. Investment is also a bridge to creating financial longevity. And not just any investment but an investment with lots of return because there are investment that has less or no returns.
Most failures and loss on Investment usually happens when you invest without proper guide, assistance and clear analysis of the profit and risk percentage of the Investment.
it's best to have an investment *manager* who has well acquainted knowledge about Investment, to help you earn from your Investment on your behalf while you oversee the Investment growth, having hundred percent access to your portfolio.
Speaking of investment *manager* , any recommendation? . I will also want to know if while he/she handles my Investment, is my investment still accessible by me to monitor and authorize any action on the Investment portfolio?
He is an amazing speaker and blows me away with every speech I hear. One thing I found little strange that he said it is okay to break the rules as long as you don't deny someone else the opportunity. But what if everyone starts breaking the rules? There will be chaos. What is the significance of having the rule in the first place? Why is someone special to break the line and get what they want?
Was a while since I listened to Sinek, one of my true virtual mentors in life. I look forward to the day I get the oppertunity to interview you. Until then, live life! / Alexander
Please listen to the video because: ● I read the summaries below and thought I learned what i needed. ● BOY WAS I WRONG! ●There are many nuances to learn! It's been said read between the lines! This has never been truer than here!
I think the bigger part of the line problem in the beginning of the talk was not willing to spend the time in line. That time spent can many times bring connections and information to help you in many ways. Professional connections, creative inspiration, you name it. I also don't agree with jumping the line unless you are respectful of those who were there before you.
On being the last to speak... As a leader, you don't have opinions; you have policies. When "the boss" says, "I think we should...", an eager, hard-charging follower is going to take it for action, even if the boss was just thinking out loud or trying to stimulate conversation.

Simon Sinek is an absolute pleasure to listen to, words just flow out of his mouth like a Mozart symphony!
Agree on that.
I think thats his best skill. I don't think he's right much of the time, but damn he can get his point across.
I agree. Listening to him is a delight

Pamela Giacometti you're cute
Simon Sinek is absolutely a very good speaker. I enjoyed listening to his speech.
Its my pleasure to introduce someone that knows how to speak intelligently
We love how he mentions, looking for the things you are most passionate about, on the first rule.
Dream Big, Always!
I've spent Christmas with my family. They are all great leaders. Nobody said a thing.
Hi Simon. You inspire me to be the best leader I can be. God bless you

Thank Simon Sinek. Brilliant lessons.

HALLELUJAH, YAAAY MEN!
His content is ages old but his delivery makes it palatable and effective.
So refreshing, everyone (millennial or not) should listen to this and embrace Simon's inspiration message
Simon Sinek is everything I aspire to be
More people in charge need to hear this and incorporate these ideas.
People like simon don't want to be in high positions of power because he is not power hungry like lots of people in charge 1 example are politicians.
What a relief to the ears to hear a well spoken person... I wondered if I clicked on the wrong video at first.
Gold, This is absolute GOLD!
Thanks alot Simon and New Look.
God Bless You All.

What does one call a typo in a speech? I said renaissance, I meant Age of Enlightenment.
Lol, I have no idea
Simoooon! Thank you. We are grateful for YOU. :)
Never mind, we were focused on the message! :) Thank you, you always have something interesting to say Simon.
Caught it, - didn't care! Great speech!
:-) It doesn't matter when you can inspire - and you do! Thank you for yet another great speech and message!
Everyone is avoiding the first guy. Man I learned almost as much from what he did wrong as I did from Simons brilliant speech.
Advice no 3 contradicts advice no 1 or so it seems to me. Advice no 4 is excellent!
1-2-5-3...sweet man...love his smile❤ my fav motivational speaker...big kiss😗
I'm in tears...awe inspiring. Of course i knew it all along
✊😁
Love you guys
Awesome principles to live by. Thank you Simon Sinek!
Remarkable presentation, and one I'm sure the audience will not soon forget.

Thank you for having the courage to be you.
So sweet and great speaker! Tips useful and ispiring as always!
An epic and enlightening speech as always by Simon.

What a great lesson ... mind blown
I almost didn't watch this because of the intro.
I had to pass it after only a few seconds of ridiculousness too!
Yeah, I got spared by a comment giving me a heads up.
I know right! It was soo. Bad. Like bad doesn’t even begin to describe it
It was a hate crime against public speakers
I was almost miss this amazing speech if it is not simon
Intro was cool!
This touched my soul.
Thank you Simon.

Very insightful! #5 is absolutely true and a "must" to keep our feet on the ground at all times.
You can go whatever you want, you can not deny others what they want : rule1 best one
Another great message, thanks Simon, the world is better for having you in it.
12:50 the last story is now my favourite too
