Wonderful video thank you! My HOA wanted to charge a lot of money to do this and the post office told me I needed to call a supervisor and to do all sorts of crazy coordination. Did it in just five minutes - no harm no foul to anyone- and I can receive mail again.
Fantastic! Thank you. Mine was broken into (just mine) and I'm responsible for it. Thank you for demonstrating just how easy this is. Much appreciated!!!
Yes, it is. I just spoke with my mail carrier about mine since the lock broke. The USPS wants $85 (!) to swap it out, which is insanity. She recommended doing it myself because of the exorbitant cost. And HOAs here in CA do not own the boxes, the USPS does.
I have a wallmounted mailbox that has a lock on it, with no key. Is this the same technique I would use to swap the lock on that? I was about to buy a whole new mailbox to be able to lock it, but if this a $10 or less fix then I am going this route. 😀
Opps, I ordered the wrong lock. I sent an email and they sent me the left turning lock right after I let them know that I made that mistake and I had sent the right turning lock back. So very helpful. Thanks!!
Thanks for video; very informative. But mine was broken into because the lock can be turned by pliers from the outside. The key hole has a large housing which was easily gripped by pliers by the thief. What options are there for anti - theft mailbox locks?
Sorry to hear that. There are some high security lock options, but probably overkill because they are just basically aluminum boxes that can be pried open with enough time.
thank you for this informative video, can you please tell me what's the size of the wrench/tool I need to use it, I have the exact same usps 1172c lock, thank you !!!
Hi Robert. Good vid, as usual. I'm approaching retirement age and was considering becoming a self - employed locksmith in "retirement". Am very handy. Worked on all kinds of outdoor power equipment, cars, trucks, heavy equipment, house renovation, and in doing so, have swapped out numerous locksets - but I'm not a locksmith. Was thinking about a home study course. Was wondering if you could recommend one. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks much.
Not a fan of the home study or mail-in locksmith courses. We've never seen anyone go through one that really learned much. The best bet would be to find a local locksmith that offers training (we do, but we're not doing it now due to Covid) or simply get a job in a lock shop as an apprentice.
@@LocksmithRecommended Thanks much for the reply. Not too many locksmiths looking for help in my area. And I doubt anyone will want to take on a 64 year old apprentice. But again, thanks for your reply.
We do both. My original intent with this video was to show homeowners how to drill it out so they could replace one if they lost a key. It's easier to teach a homeowner that than it is how to pick a lock. But I decided against that for the reasons I mentioned.
Hey Robert I liked the video I have been a Locksmith for about 30 years the last 20 I have been working for a school district as a institutional Locksmith. The first 10 I was working for a shop I am from Ca. I Thought I remember there were a lot of mail box locks I can remember there like 4 style which were A B C D and the XL ones and the ones made by national lock hell I don't know looks like stuff has changed I might be wrong I don't know can't remember I guess I am getting CRS in my old age lol.
That's along time! Here in AZ, that's all we see on the mailbox banks. Very rarely, we do see high security ones. But those shown are 99% of them here.
It depends on who owns the cluster of boxes. In AZ, most are owned by the communities HOA and the resident is responsible for replacing lost keys, etc....
Why didn’t you want to show the drilling I don’t understand? I’m a girly female and trying to figure this out, I can’t get to the lock swap until I understand how to drill it🤦🏽♀️

Perfect! Super helpful! Bless up 🙏
Short, to the point, informative. I subscribed.
Thank you.
Thanks for the objective and informative video! Very helpful!
Frickin’ brilliant… been going around and around with my USPS - f it, gonna do it myself… mahalo for showing me how ridiculously easy this is…
Greetings sir, and it is possible that a person can make that lock change, without incurring a crime for doing so.
Thank you for the video. With your help I'm now know which of the 2 locks are right for me. Thanks, Robert
Glad to help
This is clutch. Thank u.
Is it legal to change the lock if the cluster is owned by USPS?
I'm not sure. I've just never touched the mailboxes owned by the USPS. Nearly all mailboxes here are owned by HOAs, building owner, etc....

Might be a different lock, but if you can remove it and take it to a lock shop, they'll have what you need.
Great video, I had been meaning to change my lock for years and didn't how simple it was.
Glad I could help

Thank you, somehow the bolt snapped off my mailbox lock. Ordered a replacement for 7 bucks.
Thank you for this cool tutorial guys! Great video!
Glad you liked it!

Does the postal office need the new key?
Nope. They access the boxes through a global panel, not individually. That's how it works here anyway.

I tried changing my mailbox lock. The lock on the back does not have a bolt. Looks like it's pressed on to the lever. How do I remove it?
Thanks
Is it not a felony to tamper with these locks?
Nope. In AZ the locks are the property of the home owner. The mailbox bank though is the property of the USPS.
What if you break it open and the back of the lock is really stuck onto the machine then how do you pop that lock off?!?!
I can tell this is Arizona hahaha!
Thanks for the video!

As in there is no popping off and even with tools nothing was rotating to unscrew the piece holding the back and front together
just curious? can you not pick the lock instead of drilling?

@@LocksmithRecommended very true
What is so "secretive" about drilling a lock?
I know you can find everything on the internet. But I don't want to be responsible for somebody's identity getting stolen. Just old fashion I guess. 🤷
I just ordered one of the old style locks. I can make duplicates of the keys, right?
Any locksmith shop should have the blanks for duplicates. Thank you!
@@LocksmithRecommended thank you for your quick reply.
I ordered the part, but it came in the mail. I can’t open my mail box…
🤦😂
I’ve never lived in a home that had a locking mailbox.
Good for you
Your link is 404. 😢
Thanks! Fixed.
Neither one of those locks is my lock...Mine has 2 bars that come out when locking the door..
Great video, good information. Just subscribed. 👍🏻
Awesome, thank you!
The main point is the initial access, without that the rest of the video is moot. So you have not helped if I can not get in to continue the process.
Did you want me to tell people how to break into your mailbox? Didn't want to do that to you. 🤷🏻♂️
Moot not mute 🤓

It didn't make sense to me. Think I need an even simpler explanation- plus I have a round lock.
So is not illegal to do this?
It depends on who owns the cluster of boxes. In AZ, most are owned by the communities HOA and the resident is responsible for replacing lost keys, etc....

9/64 drill bit in that mug if it’s a 5 cam it will pop 5 times it’ll unlock
@@YourKidsDad The comments are more helpful than the video.
I guess in case someone tries to use it to break into someone else's mailbox? Idk
I haven’t run across a window lock yet..
You repeat.
I just liked a comment on another video about how I'm the best because I don't talk too much. 😂 ruclips.net/video/_1dcFHUCKuQ/видео.html
Seriously ... what a waste of time
