Lost my key three months ago and have been putting off getting into my mailbox cuz I didn't want to go through all the hassle of drilling. This worked in seconds! Thank you
As a former locksmith with 20 years of experience, I’ve drilled less than a dozen locks. This lock would’ve been a 3 second pick at the most. Or, I would’ve taken about 5 minutes and impressioned a key for it.
I have an old alarm box on the wall and no key since i just bought this house its a dead alarm system so i just want it off the wall. i think i will try it your way just drill right into the lock ? see if i can open the door and get it off the wall. Thanks for sharing
It worked i got the lock open but now zillions of wires in the box not sure what to cut , to be able to get this off the wall. says it was put in sept of 95 and there was a key inside too. must of been the spare one
This is exactly what I needed to see, because, despite my precautions, I have the same predicament. I ended up trying to just drill out all of the cylinder, but I still can’t get the cam turned. Am I gonna have to just cut this open???
Jimbob you are so correct! , Got a question for you....do you think it would be worth your time to try and coordinate with the post office? Not much luck on this side
The issue is that box is the outgoing mail box. The post office should be the only people with a key to open it. Who did you give the new keys to? I'm sure you are breaking a law not letting the post office do this. You could see other people's letters in there. No different than going out and drilling into one of the blue collection boxes.
@gleem1751 that is not a customer box, that is the outgoing mailbox and the one that then allowed the whole set to tip open for delivery to the apartments. Somebody was trying to retrieve a letter that was placed in the outgoing mail which isn't allowed, certainly not through destruction of the lock. Like I said before, this is no different than going down to the corner and drilling out one of the big blue collection boxes. You can in some situations change what is considered a customer lock, the lock that opens up a customers individual mail box, but this box in this video is not that. I'm the guy at the Post Office who does this work and I would have had any of those locks out in 30 seconds without drilling because I have the right access.
I have never used a drill bit larger than 5/32" to drill the shear line of any type of cylinder, cam lock, rim, mortise, tubular deadbolt. I cringe every time someone posts a video about drilling and the first thing, they do is pull out a 1/4" drill bit! The only time I have ever used 1/4" was to drill the set screws for a rim cylinder or tubular deadbolt so, again not drilling a shearline. 39 years as a locksmith as well as an instructor. I am saving this video under "wrong" for my students of what NOT to do.
All the locksmiths out there…. The job is getting a working key for the mail box. Mail box lock price $6.00 with 2 keys. So what the customer should see is a service call 65.00 and 15.00 for the lock. 80.00 total. With all that said…. Why the hell would you be worried about the size of drill bit? Or wait there for a hour. for the post master… people!!! And vampire boy… don’t go crazy over simple job. And HAVE FUN!!!!
Sigh. All they had to do is contact the usps office. Tell them what’s going on and have them meet the carrier at the building. They would open the top of the box with their key and they could unscrew the bolt in the inside of the box lock.
I manage building. I change probably 5 of these a month. Flat head screw driver on side of door opens these faster than the key, if your worried about marring the side you can use a plastic shim almost as fast
I noticed that you're using that smaller D-shaped Milwaukee M12 drill driver. I was thinking of picking one up too for locksmith work. How do you find it in daily use? I assume you'd want something bigger for fresh installs with hole saws, but otherwise is it powerful enough for most tasks? Thanks
I'm an automotive locksmith and the few mailboxes I have done was always with a couple screwdrivers. It bends the tailpiece replace the lock and out there in 5 minutes.
I really don't wish to be rude but as a working locksmith in the UK why in the hell would you drill suck a basic lock to pick? You did on the plus side did drill the correct spot but seriously a locksmith is a tradesman that prides himself on picking locks and using NDE techniques to gain entry and save the customer extra cost on replacing a lock if not needed. I would suggest if thats your goto for gaining entry then here in the UK you would be nothing more than a handyman and not a locksmith.
Yup, they can be picked very easy.....and if you had a lishi pick you could decode it. I didn't have a lishi so I knew I would be replacing it. the replacement lock cost me 3.00.... having said all that.... I did the video for people that don't know how to pick. I do agree....any guy that drills all his locks....would not be a locksmith. Cheers to the UK. CR

and all the mailbox lock here is canada is 5 pins. not 4 pins including the ones I bought from US
The ones in the US are also 5. This was probably a 5 pin..
I'd of at least gave it a few swipes with a triple peak or a Octo rake before I just started drilling.

Hello Sebastian, I’m glad my video will serve the locksmith community well….
May we pick until there will be Nothing locked!
Picking works but on these old thin boxes ya just pop them open, no damage. New boxes have thicker doors and tail pieces. Are you a locksmith ?

Why drill this. Just pop it
