3:26, the little blond boy who's desk is overflowing is a metaphor for kids who barely have a handle on the things that put pressure on them. The dark-haired boy, that I assume to be a young Joel, is shocked because he sees someone who's struggling in ways that he understands-- which is a rare thing because it's so "shameful" to show that you're under immense emotional pressure.
I love how timeless this song is. Reminds us that while we may all think today's generation is weak and has no idea what 'hard' is when it comes to life, the generation before us saw us the exact same way.
I remember when this video was played on MTV. I would get so excited to watch it. This is my favorite track from Billy Joel, and videos as well. It was during a time when most videos showcased the lyrical content of the song.

Not anymore, after watching the first episode of season4. Won´t spend my time with this series anymore, too much woke bs incomeing. It was great to okay for the first three seasones, but naaa don´t need anymore :D
This, to me, is one of the most quintessentially 80's video thats out there. Remember watching this on heavy rotation on MTV in the very early 80's as a kid. It left quite the impression on my little mind lol
Born in 89 and grew up with MTV in the 90s. Music videos were quite fun back then. Nowadays everything getting released on RUclips with no anticipationz
I haven't seen this since I was a kid. The combination of striking images and a heavy rotation on Mtv burned every moment into our brains. Seeing it now is nostalgic yet perpetually relevant. We're always captives of our own realities. The most compelling part for me was the trail of paper from the kid up to the old man, summing up our lives in one bleak stroke. APPLAUSE. Wow, that's brilliant.
I'll take 2016/17 over trying to get something to eat once a week while all of nature is trying to kill you and you're only equipped with a rock shard and a loin cloth
Ahead of its time, scary, introspective, and brilliant. Arguably Billy's best. As a little kid I was amazed that Billy knew Sesame Street was indeed, at least for many Americans watching PBS on old-school TVs, on Channel 13!
I'm just here 'cause I used to do lots of cocaine. Then I had to stop. So I get where Billy's coming from. Also I was named after this guy and was raised on and love his music. But also the cocaine thing.
I had completely forgotten this song. I used to listen to it alot ... 20 years ago. I had not listened to it since then. Now I'm again playing it non stop. Thank you Homelander!
In this song Billy Joel talks about a guy who is struggling to cope with the pressures of his life. The song is unusual because it is sung in the second person (Joel refers to the character as "you" in the verses). The driving synthesizer implies the near-paranoia the man is feeling. He does one other song like this style on the same album - Allentown. Also note When Joel sings, "All your life is Channel 13, ," he's referring to the New York TV station WNET (channel 13), which is the PBS affiliate that carried the show.
You reminded me of something I've wondered off and on my whole life: why were PBS stations almost always set up all by themselves at the high end of the old analog dial? In Tulsa, where I grew up, the PBS channel was 11; NBC was 2, CBS was 6, and ABC was 8. I had long suspected that there was something undesirable about the higher channels, and PBS simply didn't have the money or the clout that commercial stations had. Anyway, I just now googled it, and it turned out I was right. The low-VHF channels, 2 to 6, had more stable technology and better "market penetration" than the high-VHF channels, 7 to 13. All but five of America's public television stations were high-VHF. Now that TV is digital, not analog, that's no longer relevant.
Yes, I used to watch this video all the time and the channel 13/sesame street line really hit me since I was in fact watching that channel/show at the time. Love this song, love this video.
Damn this is good. I'm not a huge Billy Joel fan, but this song just cuts you right down to the bone. The tone is so different from his usual fare that it's hard to believe it's the same person.
Same. Not a Billy Joel fan.. but this song is good. I think he tried to get Joel Rock lightning to strike twice with "We Didn't Start The Fire", but that song just seems more contrived and this one seems raw.
My god, what a song writer he is! I just rediscovered this now at age 64. And yes, I am feeling like "two men on and three men out...." Brilliant song, brilliant video. Have to watch a few times in a row it's so good.
I'm sure you'll have some cosmic rationale But here you are with your faith And your Peter Pan advice You have no scars on your face And you cannot handle PRESSURE
The 7" single edit does not have these lyrics: Verse 3: Don't ask for help You're all alone Pressure You'll have to answer To your own Pressure I'm sure you'll have some cosmic rationale But here you are in the ninth Two men out and three men on Nowhere to look but inside Where we all respond to Pressure Bridge 2: All your life is Time Magazine I read it too What does it mean?
This song is so insanely good, so is this video, and so is this album...just banger after banger after banger. Such a win to use it in The Boys too (great show!), and good on all of you who came here because of that. I recommend going and checking out the rest of his stuff if you haven't already, so many gems in his catalogue. I've listened to him forever (since 1977, when I was a little tiny kid), and this song is STILL my very favorite one to see him do live...he still does it in the original key too and still sounds absolutely fucking awesome.
I remember seeing this video when it first aired on MTV. I want even school aged at the time. And it was so the beginning of music videos on television. I was fascinated... And terrified out of my mind when i saw this. I LITERALLY couldn't handle the PRESSURE! I didn't understand the symbolism like i would later in life. It was just calamity after tragedy after WHAT THE HELL?!!! I wouldn't hear that song ANYWHERE for decades. Not even once. I had forgotten the song, although i NEVER forgot the video. Then, I heard it on The Boys. And that EXACT SAME feeling came over me. I forgot Billy Joel did it. And i LIKE Billy, but i think my brain just shut that song out on purpose. I looked it up, and found that video. Looking 80's as hell! And just like that, i was transported back to that very day. I can see the apartment we lived in. I can remember the couch i was sitting on when i saw it and EVERYTHING! It was a real neat experience. Thanks, Billy. I hated it then, but i love it now.
@Scott Luther I was one of the few who could get ABC Rocks, the other network music video show in the DC area, as WJZ in Baltimore and WJLA didn't pick it up, I lived on 13rh floor of an apartment building and pulled in a Lancaster, PA station to see it. It was a half hour of videos before FNV started.
but here you are in the ninth, two men out and three men on, no where to look but inside, where we all respond to PRESSURE! Love the baseball connection...

The dark-haired boy, that I assume to be a young Joel, is shocked because he sees someone who's struggling in ways that he understands-- which is a rare thing because it's so "shameful" to show that you're under immense emotional pressure.
Never heard this song till I watched “The Boys” and I’m glad I did. It’s a banger!
I love how the melody and rhythm are just on the outside of normal pop.
This song is a masterpiece,as a song and social commentary....
I love how timeless this song is. Reminds us that while we may all think today's generation is weak and has no idea what 'hard' is when it comes to life, the generation before us saw us the exact same way.
This song is genius. So under appreciated.
This used to be played on mtv constantly back in the day, when music and mtv were awesome.
Listened to this as a teenager and is one of my Gen X faves.
Me too! I was 15 when this song was released.
This is when music videos were great!
brent jackson Yeah...what happen with the music ???
That´s because you haven´t seen yet "Despacito"(joking, sorry mi inglisssh, am Chilean)
The 80's had the best music clips.
I remember when this video was played on MTV. I would get so excited to watch it. This is my favorite track from Billy Joel, and videos as well. It was during a time when most videos showcased the lyrical content of the song.
LYRICS:
You have to learn to pace yourself
Pressure
You're just like everybody else
Pressure
You've only had to run so far
So good
But you will come to a place
Where the only thing you feel
Are loaded guns in your face
And you'll have to deal with
Pressure
You used to call me paranoid
Pressure
But even you can not avoid
Pressure
You turned the tap dance into your crusade
Now here you are with your faith
And your Peter Pan advice
You have no scars on your face
And you cannot handle pressure
All grown up and no place to go
Psych 1, Psych 2
What do you know?
All your life is Channel 13
Sesame Street
What does it mean?
I'll tell you what it means
Pressure
Pressure
Don't ask for help
You're all alone
Pressure
You'll have to answer
To your own
Pressure
I'm sure you'll have some cosmic rationale
But here you are in the ninth
Two men out and three men on
Nowhere to look but inside
Where we all respond to
Pressure
All your life is Time Magazine
I read it, too
What does it mean?
Pressure
[Chorus]
I'm sure you'll have
Some cosmic rationale
Now here you are with your faith
And your Peter Pan advice
You have no scars on your face
And you cannot handle
Pressure
Pressure, pressure
One, two, three, four, pressure!
Thanks for the lyrics
Thank you ladie
I would trust a wild looking heretic with a scar or two on his weathered face before any preacher in a suit.
Gracias
Спасибо.
Who else hyped for season 4 THE BOYS 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I am so hype!! I need it nowww
I am hyped.
june 13th cant come any sooner
Me, that's why I'm here, I found music again this evening while watching episode 1 of season 2, I'm watching everything from the beginning
How I remember this from 83 or 82.
Me too.
This song has one of the best piano/synth track of all of Billy's songs. And if you know Billy, then that's saying a LOT.
The drumming is great too.
I've been under much stress for the last couple of years.I finally found a song that understands me.
this video illustrates everyday life in 2016, on top of being one of the greatest artists of his generation Billy Joel was a psychic
Mike T No kidding. I got so anxious from a heavy struggle with reasoning that my whole head got so tight and I fainted so much from that.
I'll take 2016/17 over trying to get something to eat once a week while all of nature is trying to kill you and you're only equipped with a rock shard and a loin cloth
He also predicted the inception of flat screen televisions in the not so distant future! LOL
This song illustrates everyday life in 1982...2016 is more like 1984
Miami 2017 9/11 much
My favorite Billy Joel song EVER.
Ahead of its time, scary, introspective, and brilliant. Arguably Billy's best. As a little kid I was amazed that Billy knew Sesame Street was indeed, at least for many Americans watching PBS on old-school TVs, on Channel 13!
Aaaaaa the boys . This song hits
The boys?! Pff let’s talk about that masterpiece called “threat level: midnight”
I see you’re a man of culture.
Thanks ❤😂
OOOH I FINALLY REMEMBERED IT OFFICEE
I'm just here 'cause I used to do lots of cocaine.
Then I had to stop.
So I get where Billy's coming from.
Also I was named after this guy and was raised on and love his music.
But also the cocaine thing.
what the hell is that, sounds almost as stupid as a villain called Golden Face.
I love this song, don' t you ?
This is the moment Butcher became Negan
"but don't you worry Billy my boy, daddy's home"
This is the moment negan became Heisenberg
Masterpiece
I had completely forgotten this song. I used to listen to it alot ... 20 years ago. I had not listened to it since then. Now I'm again playing it non stop. Thank you Homelander!
Thanks Billy Joel
"And your 'Peter Pan' advice..."
Billy Joel there's no one like you!!!! You are something else!!!!
This song is related to some of the greatest Billy's of all time
One of the real artists who is very true to his music, and I love this song.
This song is timeless. A remaster is all it takes for it to sound modern. Such a great song!
Cannot agree more
No one but Billy Joel could bring something like the human emotion of pressure to life in a song! Insane talant!
Thnx but I am just here bcoz of the boys
@@racookster Very interesting and makes perfect sense. Thanks for sharing.
There are 2 types of people: Billy Joel fans and people who haven't yet realized they're Billy Joel fans.
Don't you ever besmirch Billy joel
My god, what a song writer he is! I just rediscovered this now at age 64. And yes, I am feeling like "two men on and three men out...." Brilliant song, brilliant video. Have to watch a few times in a row it's so good.
Oh yeah!.. daddy's home finally!!
This is such an intense video, when I was a kid it scared the crap out of me, but now as an adult I love it!
I'm sure you'll have some cosmic rationale
But here you are with your faith
And your Peter Pan advice
You have no scars on your face
And you cannot handle
PRESSURE
Yeah we all heard it.
Brian Griffin when I was reading this it was playing xD
The 7" single edit does not have these lyrics:
Verse 3:
Don't ask for help
You're all alone
Pressure
You'll have to answer
To your own
Pressure
I'm sure you'll have some cosmic rationale
But here you are in the ninth
Two men out and three men on
Nowhere to look but inside
Where we all respond to
Pressure
Bridge 2:
All your life is Time Magazine
I read it too
What does it mean?
Without “The Boys” reference, Billy Joel is an amazing artist!
HAS been ...LONG BEFORE "the BOYS".
boff!!!
I've never seen "The Boys". I've just loved Billy Joel since I was very young...
Threat Level Midnight.
@@yellowlabrador4918 Maybe you should watch it! The protagonist also loves Billy Joel😁
PRESSURE!
Came here after watching the boys so2 👍👍👍
Loved this music ❤️❤️
First music video I saw. On MTV when it originally airs. Still holds up!! Billy Joel was such a force back then. About 4 really great LPs!
This was the beginning of MTV and Friday Night Videos! Great Music Videos back then in 82!
My ALL time favorite Billy Joel song!
Real 😊
This & Your Only Human. Vienna. It’s almost impossible to pick one. 🎙️ 🎶
Fascinating early music video footage by Billy Joel. So aesthetically stimulating.
Love this song!
but here you are in the ninth, two men out and three men on, no where to look but inside, where we all respond to PRESSURE! Love the baseball connection...
