TEMPLE OF THE CAT LYRICS:
Let me tell you about the fateful day a unicorn named Charlie arrived at a big fuzzy temple, a temple so out of the way that no map I’ve seen has ever even drawn it. In a state of befuddlement he clip clop clipped toward the fuzzy pantheon when suddenly a figure all shrouded in shadow and intrigue opened up their eyes and said…
This is the Temple of the Cat and we’re glad you found your way.
This is the Temple of the Cat and we hope that you can stay.
Here at the Temple of the Cat you will always have a home.
Here at the Temple of the Cat you will never be alone.
He was led inside the temple by a figure who he thought might very well be the one and only wonderful Cat, as previously mentioned in the story. Well as he clip clop clipped his way through the fuzzy temple chamber room, there was a flash of color then a cat appeared right before his eyes, and with a big cat smile they said…
I am a magical cat, and you want to pet my fur.
I am a magical cat, and you want to hear me purr.
Oh I’m a magical cat, and I’m pretty much the best.
Yes I’m a magical cat, and I’m sure you are impressed.

Here at the Temple of the Cat you will never be alone.
Charlie said, “Hey now, that’s a lot to take in,” but as he looked at that magical cat, and as he looked way back on his own quite miserable cat-less life, he knew he’d be clip clop clipping the rest of his days at the temple of the cat. And his unicorn hair has been covered in cat hair ever since. All done, no returns, be well, meow. - Кино

“I’m pretty sure I died a long time ago and you two are my eternal punishment”
Spoilers:
Okay so a very very long time ago Charlie the Unicorn (sorcerer industrialist) created the tower and set up shop in another dimension that the tower opens portals to, but only unicorns named Charlie can enter. He turned Startaur into a wheel and also rounded up a bunch of chaos spirits. The chaos spirits were not powerful on their own, but Charlie trapped them in magical siphons which allowed them to absorb magic from those they killed and become more powerful. He intended to sell them as military weapons or magical slaves, but couldn’t control them and they killed him in his workshop dimension. For some reason Charlie kept one spirit in the real world locked behind a set of doors under the tower. Enough time passed for the world to forget about Charlie, and the purpose of the tower was lost, save for a few vague “ancient texts”
A pangolin named Nyx visits the tower and discovers the door. The Order of Tutelary Weasels foolishly open the door, releasing the one trapped spirit, who proceeds to absorb all the magic in the world and topple governments. Norwell the Weasel is killed but later meets a magical coat and the two fall in love. Nyx is unable to forewarn anyone about the spirit and returns to the tower, hoping that turning the wheel on top of it would defeat the spirit. Instead it opens the portal, unleashing a second spirit. The spirits then kill him.
The spirits body-hop for 10,000 years until they kill and possess the pink and blue unicorns and meet new Charlie.
Meanwhile, the ghost of Nyx learns magic and tries to put people into the portal under the incorrect assumption that the journeyer has to be “sufficiently magic” to enter.
The spirits abuse Charlie for some amount of time, taking his kidney, his horn, and his belongings. Nyx turns the wheel into Starfish and sends him to infiltrate one of their musical numbers and earn Charlie’s trust. The spirits decide to kill Charlie by blowing up the moon, but Nyx through Starfish prevents his death. The spirits then take Charlie to the tower, presumably to force him through the portal and make him explode, though this is unclear. Nyx and Starfish stop time to give Charlie magic infusions and they ultimately send him through the portal, where he meets the old Charlie's ghost. Old Charlie uses a device to allow New Charlie to affect the real world. While Old Charlie cautions that positive emotions are necessary to make it function, Charlie’s resentment at being pushed around overpowers the device, destroying the spirits and returning him to the real world, where the spirits’ influence fades. Startaur is returned to his regular form and immediately dies of a heart attack.
Very awesome comment, a perfect summary
I think that Charlie the Unicorn (sorcerer industrialist) created the original cube as a prototype and locked it away in the caverns for future use (maybe he also created the original Order of Tutelary Weasels as his sales team, which over time evolved into the protection team it eventually became?) But when he attempted mass producing them, the second cube overpowered him, taking his magic and killing him. Then the spirit used the opening of the portal as its opportunity to escape while the others remaining asleep.
I think there's a stealth message here that justified rage IS a positive emotion. Not happiness, no, but something constructive when put to the right end. Even Wizard-charlie couldn't grasp that.
Even with explanation, it's not that clear
Red and blue may also have sent Charlie in the future. At least they said they did.
I like how Charlie cares enough to remember the Choo-Choo Shoe, which breaks him out of Blue’s gaslighting.
my bad!!!
And then Blue had the decency to actually admit they screwed up the gaslighting XD
I fucking love that the key to victory isn't that Charlie is the Chosen One or has to finally change and become happy, but that he just happens to have the same name as a wizard and refuses to change
When you realise this is reality, and how most people succeed. Chance opportunity that works for them

I think Charlie being the way he is actually saved him. If he weren't so grumpy, the demons would have gotten bored with him much sooner and killed/corpse puppeted him. In essence, Charlie played the straight man to all of their horrible jokes. Him being unaware of their true nature helped further cement him in that role. After all, the joke is way funnier when someone else is not in on it.
You also gotta remember that they're demons, and demons live to fuck with people.
No, the reason the demons didn't kill him is because he is called Charlie the unicorn. Basically he is a loophole to the system. He has a similar identity to the wizard who controls the chaos spirits. Which is also why the unicorns kept repeating his name over and over when they heard his name, I think these are the chaos spirits that escaped and took the wizard's magic. They didn't possess him because they want him to suffer because they thought he was the wizard. They torture him because the wizard is enslaving them.
@@user-aeb87825 it's unlikely they knew of the loophole considering they were surprised he didn't die entering the portal.
@@Dratspider after thinking about it right now. Maybe the real reason they didn't kill him is he has a similar name to the wizard and they're just torturing for eternity.
I love how Charlie remains unapologetically bitter.
He doesn't owe anyone disingenuous happiness
And it has a good morale about this: You don't have to force your emotion to defy odds, accept your true emotion
And Charlie isn’t even necessarily a grumpy person in general; he’s just told over and over again that he’s a miserable pos, even though his attitude is very appropriate for someone in his situation. As shown in the flashback, he didn’t actually have anything against the other unicorns and was even willing to hang out with them until they started treating him like a plaything.
Everyone treats Charlie's anger like it's a phase, or that he's being contrarian, or that he's just a person who will never be happy.
When Charlie's anger is the result of being pushed around by cube demons and realizing that they've been making the world a worse place. His anger is genuine. Which is more then can be said for the cube demons fake cheerfulness.

I'd like to think that the events happening in Charlie teh Unicron are the adventures they would have had, if they weren't possessed. Yes, they are louder, more obnoxious, ruder, but they never tried to kill Charlie and actually they seemed to enjoy each other's company.
I love the detail that when the two disappear, all the things they had magic influence on stop being magic, and start being normal again after 10,000 years. The bricks and walls in the temples crumble, the giant iron Z starts rusting, the underwater door begins floating away into the waves that were previously not visible underwater. The grip they had is finally released.
Cool

It's honestly the most disturbing part if the video for me
The way blue says "your flying" out of confusion right before they're possessed is so chilling to me they were so scared
🥺😧😭
I got more confusion than scaredness, but it was a pretty similar reaction to the first time charlie saw them fly too wasn't it? Made me a little sad for the two. I always saw them as the wacky wild nuisances and seeing them as just normal creatures like that really changed my perspective on them. And explained a lot xD
We only get to see a few non-possessed characters in the series. We've seen a lot of corpses explode, and an entire world killed offscreen, but the only true onscreen deaths are those of Nyx and Blue.
The demons told Nyx they were going to kill him.
Blue dies after an instant of confusion and panic; disposed of without even an explanation, only a dismissive "alright, alright."
Chilling, absolutely.

Dang, you're right, they're actually moving their legs instead of doing the wobbly thing... although they're seen from the torso up from the whole scene, so it's almost unnoticeable.
Especially seeing how concern blue was when their friend was possessed
👍
It’s honestly kinda creepy seeing them before they were possessed by the cubes.
I think there’s also a tragedy with Starfish. He sacrificed his life by exploding on the moon and letting Charlie wish on him to keep him safe. He survives but is clearly in pain every time they meet, and gives him magic to prepare him to defeat the demons. He lets Nux turn him into a wheel of meat to complete their mission. Then, finally, when it’s all done, he appears to Charlie with the hope of finally being able to at least be companions, only to die by heart attack.
Like, all this time, he’s loved Charlie from afar and always prioritized Charlie’s well-being over his own, and even when the fight is over, he dies before they can even hang out. And even then, he’s still not bitter about it in the least; he takes all of the obstacles in stride, and is fine with watching Charlie from afar. There’s no entitlement to Charlie’s affection behind his actions because he knows he’s probably not gonna make it. He just genuinely cares about Charlie and wants him to survive.
nyx's life is also tragic
he represents the old, old laborers, the ones who watched their parents and grandparents fight for stuff like vacation time, 8 hour work days, weekends, paid leave, _real wages_ even only to see it all wash away, turned into the wheel of labor, crushed by the weight above and ground beneath, but constantly moving forward, without fail, hoping one day to pass on the spirit of what he knows is true to charlie, perhaps in the form of the slow-moving snail (slow moving perhaps representing the progress of social and labor movements throughout history?) it can also apply to civil rights or environmental rights, or native rights, they are all one and the same, connected by labor, historically speaking and metaphorically
Nyx said he needed to END starfishs enchantment, before he turned into a wheel.
Until the later bit, I figured he was always the wheel. But then turns out starfish was an enchantment of an enchantment and he was really...startaur
I'm also glad Charlie doesn't pretend to like or love him he just shows starfish what he really thinks and I think that's starfish is always seeking his love because he knows that it's genuine.

To be fair, that is literally the only time in the series that anyone is nice to him/actually cares about him
Yeah, Charlie is hardly unreasonable
(Spoilers)
Oh my god I just realized that the reason Nyx blew up was because he wasn’t a Unicorn named Charlie not because he didn’t have magic. That’s such a nice detail I love this finale so much.
It wasn't the portal itself killing people, it was just the office security system. Brilliant!

It's also probably why the unicorns found it so enjoyable to torment Charlie. Misplaced Vengeance

I have re-watched the video 7 times today, just to relive the dreaded horror of the Blue unicorn. Perfect delivery...
It's almost like "Everyone is smiling but you've got a frown" means that Charlie didn't give in. He didn't give up and just pretend everything was fine. He was true to himself, and while he may be left out, it's from fake happiness, and he conquered it.
Which is why the cubes couldn’t kill him and move on to their next victim
"Is this blood also mine?"
That is the EXACT question I had when that happened. It's amazing how consistent the insanity of this show's logic is.
A word about the "Everyone is Smiling" song sung by the dolphin:
This song is essentially made up of all the things you *shouldn't* say to someone with mental health issues, combined with all the things you'd hear from an emotional manipulator.
Starting with "all of your thoughts and feelings are wrong," and "the problem is inside your head," (gaslighting) - "happiness is easy and quick to obtain, sadness is just failure by some other name" - it seems silly when a wigged dolphin is singing these things to a unicorn, but human beings say these kinds of things to other human beings all the time in their lowest moments.
The "I don't know how to deal with you when *you're like this* " - putting the onus on the person suffering - is such a devastating thing to say to someone in that position.
Really well done FilmCow.
It’s also an interesting metaphor for how abusive bosses treat their employees. Rather than address the root causes of their misery, they choose to just say, “That’s a YOU problem.” It’s the toxic capitalist mindset that poverty and misery are personal issues instead of systemic issues. It’s also interesting to note that in Charlie’s reprise, the lyrics state that he refuses to just “Shut up and smile.” After all, why should he? The world is broken and no one cared enough to fix it.
Don't forget that Charlie's "final battle" briefly but effectively uses the exact same leitmotif, but from the perspective of the manipulated finally realising their entrapment and rejecting it. Not to mention the Charlie who kicked the whole thing off was a capitalist who built siphons running off people "thinking happy thoughts", or just adhering to some sort of enforced happy facade pretending everything is fine, which is exactly what the chaos demons did to their corpse puppets as well.
@@somethingeasy333 That's actually really insightful and a entirely different side I hadn't considered, regarding the original Charlie.
Don't really know if there was any purposeful allegory for mental illness considering Charlie seems to be the only person who actually is sane in his world. Everything else seems on point though.
Or you can get over yourself and stop taking yourself so seriously.
People who use mental health as an excuse for their behavior are narcissistic

When Charlie told the sorcerer that he was also named Charlie, the sorcerer said he found a loophole in his security system. The system would only allow Charlie the unicorn to enter unharmed. While the magic probably helped, in the end it was blind luck that Charlie succeeded. If he was named John he would be dead and failed
I imagine one of the magic items deduced the nature of the security system and modified history so the demons could be destroyed; the solution was for Charlie to share the same name as the CEO. Because magic.

Interesting to see why pink and blue specifically harrassed and tortured charlie all this time instead of just killing him and turning him into a puppet. The idea that it was a twisted payback for being enslaved by charlie the magical unicorn. Charlie the magician was the mayor sluv of the demon cubes. Wonderful justification.
Oh damn, I didn’t even make that connection
remember, one of the unicorns even made a joke about trying to harness the cubes for "money" instead of evil. That was the demon saying that, not sluv. Meaning they did it with full knowledge of charlie the magical unicorn, and it was probably to riff on him
DoublejumpHD: Epic Gamer and when nyx said no to that idea what’s why the demon spared them the only reason they killed him was cause he decided to mess with the temple
Pretty sure the unicorns just like to torment people and then kill them just for fun. When they think they’ve killed Charlie at the end of episode 4, they go “okay, who’s next?”, implying that they have a sort of list.
No one is going to talk about the remarkable "coincidence" that only Unicorns named "Charlie" are allowed into the chaos void/magic siphon location... Really?
It still strikes me that Charlie's last triumph in the series isn't finding happiness but being grumpy and having that be respected instead of mocked.
This finale puts every other video of charlie the unicorn into such a horrifying context, the world surrounding charlie, while seemingly vibrant and full of life has slowly been drained of it by two all powerful demons, everyone that Charlie has likely ever met was dead. And charlie may be one of the last few living sentient creatures in his world
Yess he even said at the begining how long it had been since he'd seen anyone else :'(
I like to imagine all those lights were magic returning to Charlie’s world, meaning new life will eventually rise

@@raydgreenwald7788 p sure that was the magic leaving the world. the magic (controlled by the demons) had preserved the world from decaying (or created the illusion that it hadn't decayed), so as it dissolves everything suddenly rapidly deteriorates (buildings cracking, Z rusting, candy mountain melting, etc)
I'm probably thinking too much into this-
But the lyrics "Everyone's smiling but you've got a frown" really stick out to me considering the ending.
Cause everyone who *was* smiling was probably a possessed flesh puppet controlled by demons, and it really highlights that Charlie *isn't* possessed. He's himself. And like, being himself was what allowed for the 10,000 year long nightmare to finally end.
The very thing the demons constantly criticized Charlie for was what became their downfall.
That is why they all exploded every time they sang to Charlie 😮
He kept being his confused and depressed self and they couldn’t control that. Pink and blue were probably trying to get him on board with all the silly adventures but always failed while pretending that it was their plan the whole time or maybe as they are chaos demons they just didn’t care what the outcome was.
This is crazy
Great take, man.
I Just realized that when Charlie said “i think I actually died long ago and you guys are my eternal punishment” He wasn’t actually that far off from the truth

I would never imagine that Charlie’s story could be wrapped up in a way that tied together all the surreal mischief from previous episodes into a coherent narrative, but there you have it. And good music to boot. What a masterpiece.
This concluded before we got HL3. it was worth the weight.
It was all about Charlie the entire time. Rather than being a passive actor, Charlie was the key to the whole ending. Amazing. Better writing than most modern Hollywood movies
@@perrybb2 most modern hollywood movies are cheesy and generic

Charlie's depression and anger saved the day in the end. It beat the Unicorns' cynical joy because unlike them, Charlie is real and embraces his emotions while his tormentors thrive on random silliness and chaos purely for the lulz.
What a great ending. Thanks for all the fun.
TIL I'm a demon because I embrace the absurdity of my existence lol
I saw it as a commentary on the control our media has on our minds and the way it distracts us from the real issues we need to focus on solving. The chaos spirits relied on constant distractions and wild entertainment to keep Charlie from letting his cynicism and critical thinking skills give him the upper hand. They were born from the blind drive towards financial gain, and all throughout the finale they were allowed to take over and destroy the world because of that very same greed. It wasn't until his anger and depression were finally given free reign that he was freed from their control, but by then it was too late, and the world around him was a desolate wasteland.
A concerningly relevant take on our own reality and where we're headed. Not surprising coming from Jason either; watching his livestreams he's very much like Charlie, fully aware that we're headed in a bad direction as a species and only able to keep going through mindless distractions and the occasional bit of controlled chaos. Bittersweet isn't the word I'd use to describe it, more like "bitter, but with a hope that at least this is a caricature and maybe we can fix things before it gets to this point".
Swish Fish oh yeah Charlie is the sole survivor of his world he’s the last unicorn everything else but the plants are already dead
The whole series has been about depression, how others respond to it and how it can't be easily wished away. The first episode of the finale was the most overt about it because while the first few songs had that 'cheer up' vibe about them, the dolphin flat out sings the self-perpetuating cycle of 'this is your fault because you're miserable'. Ending the series with Charlie going to a metaphorical hell and conquering his own personal demons is the appropriate way.
@@fossil1266 He was alone before Pink and Blue / Roffle and Lolz came along, he's probably alone again afterwards. But at least all the magic returned back to the world.

Startaur and his undying yet fleetingly short lived love for charlie is the real mvp. Preparing and endowing a non the wiser charlie with the mystical powers he would need to defeat the demon cube while he himself had to endure being trapped in different bodies, being blown up on the moon and acting outside of space and time. Only to meet an untimely demise once the mission had been completed.

This was a shockingly story rich ending to a series otherwise known exclusively for its whimsical nature and off the walls humor, and I loved every second of it. The realization that the B plot of this finale was actually far in the past was so cool to me, and seeing Charlie become a hero of sorts against his own will and giving reasoning and structure to the madness we’ve been witnessing throughout this whole series was very satisfying. "I'm told the issue is inside my head, as they make a world that is withered and dead." That's gonna be my favorite line of the entire series I think.
That line hit way harder then a line from a silly meme series had any right to.
And in the end his honesty restored the world, now free of demonic influence.
It feels a little relevant, eh? We’re being told now not to worry as the world literally burns. Also helps that a corporate, profit-obsessed venture is the cause of it in the first place, and the guy who caused it is the one telling Charlie to think happy thoughts.
Capitalism
If I was a decade younger, I would put this line into my bio on every feasible social network.
I'm glad Charlie didn't have to be happy to fix things. The Chaos Spirits were constantly telling him that his problem was his attitude but that was just gaslighting any time he actually gave their shenanigans a go they'd go out of their way to make him miserable. The problem was never him and this ending showed that.
I think that if it was a happy ending, it would’ve been so much more sadder cuz in reality, there’s no happy ending to what just happened, you can’t reverse death or the damage caused, so if Charlie was faking happiness or forcing himself to think happy, it probably would’ve just gone back to step one.
I saw someone theorize they’re trying to make Charlie happy with their musical numbers in hopes they can use that magical siphon OG Charlie made to steal whatever magic he sad
"Yes, the planet got destroyed. But for a beautiful moment in time we created a lot of value for shareholders."
Such a beautiful quote in business thank you for sharing and reminding me of this beautiful piece of satire
I like how Nyx, with all his knowledge and life of study was completely wrong on every step to attempt to stop the cubes and was utterly powerless and ignorant about what to do, even 10k years later his theory was completely incorrect, and he simply got lucky that he happened to have sent a unicorn named Charlie. Even then, as seemingly worthless as he was, his participation was key into getting rid of the demons.
I'm impressed how the style and tone has stayed consistent all these years
But there wasn't satire originally

idk if I'd say that, the first four were 90% blue/pink doing random shit. With the new characters for the grand finale, that tone isn't really kept. I still think it's great (even better, imo) but there's definitely a noticeable change.
I think that's easier to see when you get near the end of the video (watch it first! I won't say why),
and the whole video is an overall homage to the crazy adventures charlie, pink and blue go on.
that's exactly what i was going to say! He really managed to develop a world around something that was originally just a wacky meme, while staying true to the original humour and vision that made it so successful. The same can't be said about other more mainstream animated series... *cough* Rick and Morty *cough*
I love that instead of going for the obvious “oh he’s alt universe Charlie” it’s just “no it’s just he has the same name and the security system therefore assumed it was the same guy”. Brilliant lmao
But is that really it? Or was that just a "bit" 🤔
Because "We all come from blood Charlie. Blood is divine and pure. So before you say a thing Charlie, remember this blood is yours!"
So... I think it's more than "he just happened to share the right name and species to access the Magic Charlie room." And more likely that they actually share the same blood.
After all the Charlie Multiverse is already established with things like Charlie Teh Unicron, Charlie the Yannacorn, and Detective Charlie of America the Unicorn...
Why would FilmCow make so many different versions of unicorns named Charlie if it wasn't connected?
Seems pretty obvious that the "oh, we are both just named the same" was a jokey bit, like, the unicorns don't realise they are the same blood but clearly one is the most Magical Charlie and the other is just the most Upset Charlie, and that's not all, because their blood may run across countless other Charlie's in random realities 🤣

So...:
* Charlie the Unicorn (the magician) wanted a lot of money. Created a way to siphon the magical energy out of demons to use as a weapon, or for labor in general.
* Two demons escaped and stole his magic, puppeteering a couple unicorn corpses around. EDIT: They were alive at first, not corpses.
* They meet Charlie (non-magician) and do everything we see. They created almost everything weird and magical in that period
* Charlie (non-magician) enters that realm, where his magic is used to trap the demons.
* Once the demons are trapped, everything they created begins to fall apart without their magic sustaining those things
Mostly right but the unicorns were in fact alive before they were possesed as we see in the last part of the movie
They met Charlie right after that
What I want to know is where did the 3rd chaos spirit (the one trapped under the tower) come from? Is the series some kind of infinite loop where that one is unleashed, goes back in time with the one awakened by the wheel and they become the unicorns where they ultimately get sealed and presumably sent back in time to get freed again at the same point in time? And if so where did the other one go?
@@Darvoth there were only two. One under the tower, one that came through the portal. No time travel was involved.

It is really impressive that Jason and everyone else at Filmcow managed to create legitimately interesting lore and backstory for this series without ruining the insanity that made it good in the first place.
25:37 I'm pretty sure this is the first time in FilmCow history where there's been three-way character banter. It's almost always two characters going back and forth, a straight man and the crazy one. Even in the rest of this series, the pink and blue unicorns act as a single character taking to Charlie -- I don't think they've ever spoken to each other without Charlie being involved in some capacity.
Edit: Marshmallow People has the marshmallows and the triangles who all interact with each other
Tricorn Lord of Fate had the main character, the villain and the sexy lizard all had a conversation together
"Was that you?"
"No."
My favorite moment in the entire series.
Anyone notice how literally no one listens to Charlie?
Nyx, Startaur and Charlie the Sorcerer never explained to him anything that was going on. I think the saddest part is that he literally has no idea that he saved the world.
Hey now. Nyx did. In fact, Nyx was literally the first and only character to actually speak with him, answer an actual question he had, and talk to him like someone to talk with, not just talk AT. I feel liek the paralells between Charlie and Nyx kinda drove the whole narrative and made their interaction seem especially powerful.
I mean Nyx literally explained to him that he is being played around by corpses controlled by demons and not living unicorns. So Nyx technically did answered one mystery
He also definitely does know that he saved the world (well, if we're to believe that the world is saved and that the demons aren't just messing with him). The sorcerer explained what they were trying to do and Charlie re-entered a world that, so far, appears to be free of demons.
And so, after the demons' toying and torment was over, those who were puppets for their amusement can finally rest. Even though a bit bittersweet, still a nice ending for an unforgettable series.
Thanks, Old Outlet.
