The tone shift of "I guess you're gone." has me crying. It's such a sudden realization he has.
i always loved those two lines "you came back." and "i guess you're gone." when his tone shifts and has way more emotion in it for those few seconds, it makes me want to cry
The realization that he'd already killed his best friend and straight man several episodes ago and didn't realize it hits hard. Even in a ridiculous comedy world, wanton destruction has consequences.

I love the detail when Carl sees Paul’s skeleton, the mask is hanging around his neck instead of floating. It shows that the mask was a hallucination the whole time and once Carl realized Paul was really gone, he didn’t hallucinate him being around anymore

You can notice, that once Carl starts talking to himself, and then hallucinating Paul, he uses Paul’s name more and more. It just layers on that the thing Carl really wanted was time with Paul, and once he left, he couldn’t go on.

Llamas With Hats storyline is essentially a dude going absolutely off the wall insane after his boyfriend leaves him, so he makes it everyone else's problem, before killing himself in the end after he sees the corpse of aforementioned ex-boyfriend

I'd say more it's a guy progressively pushing away his best friend as his mental health declines which when he succeeds just makes his mental health declines even further until he realises that he truly got rid of his best friend before seeking forgiveness for what he's done to Paul since the sound of forgiveness is screaming, then silence....
I’d say it’s Carl being unable to have a meaningful discussion without a good starter. Carl after killing then eating a trespasser has a good conversation with Paul and he’s happy for a short while so he one ups himself to have another one for more happiness to which he now associates horrific violence with conversations which leads to happiness until Paul leaves. Now alone and meaningless he attempts to recreate Paul to feel joy again but the sheep doesn’t work so he goes back to a Broken Paul who never wanted the violence but knew he was the reason for it so to hopefully end this he turns Carl away. Now unaware of what to do he goes around killing hoping someone will talk to him but everyone either dies or runs which strains his mental health to the point of hallucination that his Paul mask is now alive and encouraging the violence which is what he thought Paul was doing earlier by talking to him but it wasn’t the same fake Paul didn’t have the same emotion, he wasn’t really talking to Carl. Now feeling lonelier than ever he goes back to the one llama who made him happy but he wasn’t there anymore so Carl angry at Paul for leaving him but desperate for a feeling of purpose again decides to forgive Paul and go to him.

Say what you will, to me this is incredible art. Same as with Charlie the Unicorn, I can't get over how Jason Steele always completely warps and twists the already warped and twisted things he wrote in the first place, giving them much more meaning, emotion, actual story and just metaphorical and philosophical layers in the end.
He revisites seemingly harmless and purely comical old scenes ("that's the sound of people drowning" - "that's what forgiveness sounds like: screaming and then silence") and gives them such a bitter deep meaning.
I am at awe with his creativity.

It always amazes me how such a fucked up series can have such a...beautiful(?) ending. The mask is constantly yelling at him because he's the only life left and his work wont be done until its all gone, and drove him to seek out Paul because it knew that seeing his remains would push Carl to complete what he started.
I know it's been a while, but I still think we need a llamas with hats prequel. I want to know Carl's backstory, and how him and Paul met.

The song signifies Carl's madness slowly beginning to consume him and the background colors show Carl's mood. It showed bits of yellow when he would get really mad at the times he got annoyed or uncomfortable with the Paul mask and at the very end the background went light so did the music indicating Carl is now at peace. "And that is what forgiveness sounds like, screaming and then silence. " Carl forgave Paul for ever leaving him.
Despite how depressing and funny this series is, it’s still a fond memory from my childhood, thanks for the laughs, and the existential crisis at age 6🙏

It was one of the funniest animations on the internet... and then suddenly it's all serious and sad and everyone dies. People watched this for the comedy and then... there was no comedy :/
There was no seriousness in the series before, none at all. So when it just randomly appears and continues to get even more serious, it's just off putting. It's not like it was a show with mostly comedy but also a proper story line or something. It feels like Jason just got bored with it or ran out of ideas wanted to find a way to end it forever so people wouldn't keep asking "where's the new episode?"

My Halloween marathon binge that I started doing since 2018 has included this very series. I remember seeing it for the first time and thinking about how hilariously nonchalant (relatively) Paul was about literal dismembered body parts laying around the house.
i know right? paul is the straight man in their dynamic but to me, he does not react to this stuff like a normal person would. it's like "you got us into a fender bender" upset instead of a "oh my god, i'm living with a murderer, is he going to kill me next?" upset

Rewatching this after the announcement of the Epilogue continuing this and honestly its more funny and powerful than i remember i would watch this back then and even saw the last few episodes release..its soo iconic god i can’t wait!!

I mean in Carl's defense on the first human, the guy was technically break-in and entering and therefore was justified in defending his home by stabbing him 37 times in the chest. He then got hungry from all that stabbing and needed to eat some hands. Makes perfect sense.
