Most excellent advice for anyone not familiar with wiring diagrams. I spent the better part of 39 years working on radar systems and I congratulate you on explaining things as you did.
This vid is the most comprehensive I have seen anywhere. Very thorough and smart approach to diagnosing the electrical system. I agree with the previous commenter that you would make a great vo/tech professor. Your vid helped me get my Toro Timecutter running again. Thank you so much, Jamel.
Man. I wish u covered a little bit more... Something odd happened to mine.. and it's so frustrating. It also must be one of those safety switches... Or multiple
Superb observation and common sense explanations you have given takes me back to tech school and reminded me that if you don't use the information that you learned, over time you can loose it. Somehow you have retaught me in ways that my original teachers did not do. The schematic lesson was excellent. You where born to teach this and are probably a very good mechanic. Thanks Jamel Smith you are a brother with powerful skills. You should have thousands of people looking at this video. Keep doing what you do so well.
bro you helped me in refreshing my mind. I have a HUSQVARNIA and have that same symptoms you had on this video. This is the first time I actually work on a riding mower and that safety switch is something I will have to check. I bought new battery, starter, and solenoid and still have not had the engine turn. I was able to bypass the starter and turned the engine. I hope today I will find the safety switch that is giving me trouble. Great video, I will share my story to you.
Glad to help. Make sure to check you have secure grounds and connections. Commonly, under the ground terminal has rust and connections become loose due to vibration from using the mower. Keep us updated. Cheers.
If you store your zero turn mower for the winter months, install a fuel shut off valve and run your mower until it shut down itself. You will clear all the fuel from the carburetor.
Yes, I do that as well. I also use non ethanol gas. The problem with this mower was someone messed with the electrical to bypass some of the safety switches and debris was in the connector. That's what I get for paying 200 for a zero turn. Thanks for the comment. Cheers.
The Toro SW4200 electrics/wiring/Brake Controller/Switches/Solenoids are trash.. After replacing parts, still flakey. I just wired around most of the interlocks (but not Seat Switch!) and seems to hold. Starter occasionally jams against the flywheel, leaving the starter mounting bolts a little loose seemed to solve this issue. The Hydrostatic drives so far have been Great.. very powerful, no issues. The steel deck is weak, actually bent mine in the middle. Banged it out, and welded in more steel.
You are not wrong. These sensors commonly go, my buddy just removed all of them (he is the only one that uses it). My starter is wonky as well. I sometimes have to knock the starter to get it working, replaced it twice.
@@Jayjam209 Gosh, Toro wants $250 for a starter than should be $50. So far I've gotten around the starter dead spot/Flywheel Jam by leaving the starter bolts about 1/2 turn from tight. Love the mower BUT Electrically is Total Trash, and the Deck is Very Weak. Also, now it needs another ignition switch (Gets Hot, loose connection). Wiggle the connector and things (fuel solenoid on the carburetor) start clicking.
Thank you for an excellent trouble shooting video. I have a Toro TimeCutter Z5000 with a Kohler 21HP engine. It just quit running while I was using it. It will crank all day and it is getting fuel. Can you or do you have a video for troubleshooting a no spark issue. Thanks again. I am now a subscriber. Gregg
@@Jayjam209 No I do not have a spark tester. I removed the sparkplug and reconnected the sparkplug and set against ground. What I discovered was a very weak spark. However, the sparkplug was severely fouled. I replaced the plug and cleaned ground connection at ignition coil. Put everything back together and the engine ran like a champ.
Should have replaced the fuse straight away. Not having overcurrent protection can cause damage.Seen sparks when it cranked @34:55. Must have a loose connection around the engine area. Dark terminal (power?) at ignition switch connection, showing possible overheating. Blue multimeter a Bryman?
You are correct. Just a matter of following wires, in tight spaces makes things a little more difficult. In my experience, if you don't have a wiring diagram and your new to electrical it can be overwhelming to know where to start and what to look for. Thanks for the comment. 😃
Sorry, thought I had that in there, its behind the steel plate where the parking brake lever is. I cant honestly couldn't see it well myself. On my mower, I had to remove battery, and feel the connector (its the boxed section below the seat mount).
You will need two to three different wiring diagrams (depending on what you are trying to diagnose). From two different sources. One for mower body and one for engine. For the body wiring diagram, the brand mower (company that makes your mower) will provide the body wiring harness; this will include safety switches, ground locations, etc. Check the company's website. Sometimes you may need to call the company or email them. Second, mowers, and tractors, comes with a variety of engine options (kohler, Briggs & Stratton, Kawaski, etc). My Troy Built mower came with a Briggs & Stratton engine,. So I needed to go Troy Built's website and Briggs & Stratton website for everything referenced in the video. Each will need respective model information, tags should be on the body of the mower and somewhere on the engine. Hope that helps.
Yes, its pretty beat up, lol. I bought it second hand for 200 bucks. Aesthetics are not what I was going for, nor is it cost effective for me to put much money into it. It serves my purposes.

Good job explaining electrical. Wish me luck tomorrow. Same problem on my v- twin. Maybe a tri pod would help you with the videos. Frees up a hand.
BEST VIDEO ON U TUBE. THANK YOU JAMEL -YOU SHOULD BE TEACHING AT A VOC SCHOOL!
Thanks for the kind words!
I`m impressed, not only with your weirdly back bending thumbs, but your ability to explain the otherwise confusing schematic reading.
Thanks Jamel!!
Thanks! HAHA yes, double jointed. Glad it helped.
Just excellent on presentation congratulations let there be more to show the back yarder
Thanks!
