Hey all! Thanks for watching this short introduction to the Seaboard Block M for home studio producers and creators. Be sure to check the follow up video where I discuss the Seaboard M factory default settings, how they differ from the ROLI Dashboard default presets and how it affects playability. This might be crucial to your enjoyment of the Seaboard. ruclips.net/video/QWqk6glBjZo/видео.html Cheers⚡
Glad it was helpful! Also check out the follow-up video I did on the Seaboard M. There is a Factory default setting on the unit itself, not in the Dashboard software, that in my opinion we should all be using with this smaller keyboard for best playability. Cheers ⚡️
i was an early adopter of older version of the Seaboard - I wasnt using it so gave it to Chris Grey - who uses it quite a bit in his production. I am tempted to jump back into the mix just to explore all the stuff you can do with the included software
Nice! If you are using a mac or ios in your setup, this new seaboard block is a breeze to set up with wireless MIDI and no latency that I can notice anyway. Cheers 🌿
Hey... How does it work when you daisy chain two of these together ? Like if you glide from one to the other do you notice an abruptness while transitioning to the other block ?
Sadly it does not have edge-to-edge glide, there is a gap which will cause an interrupt if you try to glide across the boundary. Check out Doctor Mix's showcase where I think he runs into this. If you are looking for a longer glide range, take a look at the Seaboard Rise 2 with 61 full size key-waves, as they call them. Cheers ⚡
I've been looking at rural instruments for I don't know how long now 10 years. And with no considerable amount of memory to store in them and use without dragging out a computer is beyond me why they wouldn't put some type of memory in there. Basically what it comes down to is by rolly and buy a computer for it. And that's where the company has lost me this whole time. If I am wrong about what I'm saying that there is no internal storage for any amount of music to play a night out. Then I stand by what I say is the deal-breaker for me. Thank you for the video I appreciate it and it sounds great
Maybe one day we will have a full expressive MPE with all the built-in sounds, but I don't think any time soon for a price like this. Glad you liked the video, and lmk if you find something as good out there!
I’m almost buying it from a third party person, I would like to know if you need to do a subscription to have access tho their library of songs, plus if you could answer I saw some other owners of songwriter model having delays affecting the product. The Last but not least are you experiencing any limitation in this product as they are kind of discontinued (roli) is no longer up on the board. The new company lumi is updating it?
Before you buy, makes sure the owner has unregistered the Seaboard M from their ROLI account. There is no paid subscription required, but you do need to register at ROLI using an email and activate your Seaboard M to have access to the free ROLI software included. The original Seaboard Block keyboard is discontinued, but this is the new generation. It supposedly works with the ROLI Loop and ROLI Color blocks, but I haven't tried. I have not experienced any noticeable latency delays using with wired MIDI, USB MIDI or WIFI MIDI, but I have only used extensively with Windows and Bitwig DAW sessions. The MacOS WIFI MIDI I tried worked fine with GarageBand and Logic Pro X - no latency I can recall, but I didn't use it extensively over a long session with MacOS. Good luck! ⚡
I just ordered one do you think it’s necessary to have two? I have enough desk space for one but I can make another one work. I have a Kontrol s61 midi which takes up most of my workstation space.
Nice! No, I don't think you need 2 or more to enjoy this. However, check out Doctor Mix's review from last year where he demos 3 all together, and you might get an idea of the benefits. One thing I would definitely keep in mind is the factory defaults for the Seaboard M are not the same as the defaults in the ROLI Dashboard software, you want to save these defaults to a new Dashboard preset so you can re-use them in other presets to save you from applying too much pressure on the seaboard. This definitely affects the playability of the Seaboard. Here's a link to a follow up video where I show this: ruclips.net/video/QWqk6glBjZo/видео.html Enjoy your new Seaboard; I think you are going to love it! Cheers ⚡
Surprisingly there were not very many orchestra type MPE sounds included with the ROLI Studio Player software and the few that were included did not have the expressive range I was hoping for. Besides, that is not the type of music I make for this channel. If you are looking for those sorts of demos, check out ROLIs own demos as well as Jordan Rudess videos where he demos some amazing Orchestral instruments (professional library) with the Seaboard Rise. Cheers ⚡️
Unfortunately, not yet. According to their product page: "We only ship hardware products to the USA, Canada, UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand." I'd send them an email and see how you can get one in your area. Cheers 🌿
Yes, but you need access to a mac or Windows PC to configure it beyond factory default settings, which I think is single MIDI channel 1 or MPE if you use side selector switch.
I returned mine after 3 days. Constant randomly held notes, I’d turn it on and it was already playing random notes. Velocity was wildly inconsistent. I’m not a tester or early adopter, just a consumer, and I expect a product to work correctly out of the box. Sorry I can’t be more positive but this was a massive disappointment to me.
I believe it. One of the reasons put that bit in, so people know what is involved. This is a software driven instrument, for the most part. Although you can configure it for particular set up, you are stuck with that until you plug in to a Mac/PC and reconfigure.
Wow, that is a wild looking controller! It probably has better MIDI CC configuration across the axes.. I think the Seaboard still has the 3 axes for single channel midi devices that support it: z - Pressure/aftertouch, y - Slide or vertical modulation along the last key played and x - Glide or horizontal movement across the board. You can actually glide from note to note without using the top and bottom 'strips', it's just more challenging to get a flow that way. The only thing ROLI could improve is the configuration for the Seaboard - we need to be able to change the CC for all axes, not just Slide and be able to select different MIDI channels right from the Seaboard... Cheers 🌿
@@Tetrad10Roli makes such impressive hardware, but their commitment to have them not be very functional outside of their software is a big turnoff for me. I would be all over this if they would have robust and open tools to map any of the expression parameters to whatever, in whichever synth I like

Hey! Thank you for the review - so glad to hear you enjoyed the experience. Please tag us in anything you create with the Seaboard M!

@@Tetrad10 Thanks man... That's really a deal breaker for me to be investing into blocks. I mainly thought of them because of budget constraints 🥲

Thanks for listening

It's very clear that it's not a synthesizer, it's just a controller.

Glad it helped!

how is it going?
@@Mikalyn Not had too much time to play around with it but its potential for the kind of music I like to make (ambient) will be awesome.
@@charmawow for sure - i play keys in my shows and might be fun to add this to the mix.

If you get two you have more notes to have since the keyboards are magnetic and connect and stuff imma get me two
Yes
Thanks for the review ❤ quick question, is the keyboard layout as wide as seaboard rise or it's narrower?
Thanks, glad you liked the review.
The layout is narrower: these keys are smaller altogether, about the same size as the Arturia keysteps.
I thought that I will heard basic instruments. Piano, flute, saxo, organ, strings generally. In high quality.
It not works on this?

Yes, its worth the $350. MPE game is unequaled right now. Options are dope but remember it doesnt work in all Daws…
It has been pretty solid for me. Since the MPE patch last year, Bitwig is working great with the Seaboard although it takes a bit of setup.

Does it work without a computer?
Yes, but you need access to a mac or Windows PC to configure it beyond factory default settings, which I think is single MIDI channel 1 or MPE if you use side selector switch.
