In this video I compare the Roli Seaboard Block with the Seaboard Rise. If you’re trying to decide which one to buy, this video may help you. I discuss the differences between the Seaboard Block and Seaboard Rise including the feel, price, controls, buttons, features, and included software and sounds. In this video I am using the Seaboard Rise 49 for the comparison. The Rise also comes in a 25 key version. Both the Seaboard Rise and Block make use of MIDI Polyphonic Expression which allows you to control sounds in magical ways. I demo some of the sounds and control of both keyboards in this video. This is a comparison of the Seaboard Block and Seaboard Rise.

just added this to my list of “instruments to buy once I’m rich”
Good plan...slowly work towards it! :-)
Me too 😂😂😂
You never will be. So dont worry. I already have one of each including the preorder of lumi keys
Same😂😂😂
Dreaming with it!!
The biggest difference for me is that you can't glide from one seaboard block to the next one attached. So even if you have three of them together you can't fully mimic the RISE.
Excellent point! I didn't even think of that!
I saw a video someone playing where they did a glide.
@@adityakrishnan1243 It was not possible before, can you provide the link?
actually on ROLI website it says up to five can be linked

The lighting and quality in this video is awesome, keep up the great work man
Thank you! It takes time to get that stuff right, so thank you for noticing.
Great demo and playing! I have the Rise 49 myself and it really makes you play expressive in a more intuitive way.
Nice! I couldn't agree more!
Watching this as if I own one
I do that all day everyday with gadget and music gear videos :-)

Made me smile straight away 😃
In the same boat here🤦🏾♂️ thinking of getting this or the NI kontrol keyboard 🤷🏾♂️
tnx a lot bro...i think rise is compatible to my needs... looking forward to more tutorial from your vids in seaboard
Thank you for sharing this. I just now got a ROLI Seaboard Rise 49, and finding out that they are hard to get now. But, adding great sound flexibility to my music compositions. 🎶
That beat in the intro! Nice!
Wow!!!! So inspiring and what a difference a year makes with a lot of hard work! And you work so hard with your two jobs!😘
I just flashed the message right now...... AWE!!!SOME!!! I want that rise!!! Thank you for this great show and tell, I just felt the sounds!
You’re welcome! Glad you liked the video!!
Its amazing how many questions of mine you answered in just 7 minutes. Thank you really much for this review
I bought the Roli Seaboard 49 before Blocks was introduced and have really enjoyed playing it. Even if I were to buy Roli products today, I would still go with the Seaboard Rise 49. Main reason is standard keyboard far as key spacings, and also enjoy the long Slide bars which run on top and bottom along full length of the 49 keys.
What about the Seaboard RISE 2?
Love the video Sanjay C! Very cool. Congrats on your Seaboard Rise!
Thanks!
I just picked up a used Rise 49 recently, your site was “instrumental” in helping me finally dive into MPE. 😁Thinking about upgrading the Equator software version that it came with to Equator 2. Thanks for all you do!
I have had a Seaboard Rise 49 for a while and love it. Your videos on the Seaboard Block were a real influence on my grabbing one of those blocks as well. Two different animals. I find the Rise to be a little truer to a piano as the waves are basically standard sized. The block version is nice for noodling and setting on the extra space of a controller or my pianet for a bit of extra color. The block is great for brass and woodwind sounds since you can get little slips and slides that sound expressive and natural. The Rise I find more natural for strings and sitar sounds. Plus having 4 octaves makes it easier to play two handed. I have a few 2 octave controllers along with a couple 3 octave pieces of gear. I really need 3 octaves for two handed work but for lead lines and solos, the Seaboard Block helps to build ideas.
They may be similar but the differences really compliment each other a lot more than I thought they would.
Dennis, thanks for your comment. I had the Block for a long time and never knew how much I missed the extra keys until I got the Rise. So happy with it now!
Congratulations on your new seaboard rise 👍
On the seaboard block you can actually change presets by pressing the octave shift buttons in conjunction with the rectangular button on the left side.
Thank you for explaining this thoroughly!
Awesom work, brother .
Dope video, bro
Love your detailed videos keep doing your thing
Thanks, will do!

Best review ever. Love you bro💖😉
Thanks, FuzzTube!!
Just got a seaboard block today and I love it played for 3 hours straight and it’s just so cool to play! Nothing like anything I’ve ever played before.
Yeah, its definitely one of the most innovative and musical devices I've played
Thanks for the video.
Just one more thing, is there an actual difference in terms of responsiveness between these two with respective to touch sensors coz of larger keys in rise?
Responsiveness, not much of a difference. Negligible. But like I said in the vid, the Rise Keys just feel a little better.
From Minimoog to the future!. A great step!
Yes...the future is here!
Very nice 👍 very helpful ! Thanks Sanjay 👏👌👍❤️
Thanks!
wow, thank you guy for your Video I love it too much
Hi, thanks for the comparison. I have a question: Can you use the seaboard RISE xyz pad to control instruments other than equator? (Eg: Mysteria by Native Instruments). Thank you in advance :)
This help me cement that the block is the right choice for me. The only thing I would like is more presets, but like you said, I can upgrade down the line if I feel that’s a benefit to me. Portability, light weight and small keys all sound good to me (I have tiny hands. Full size keys can actually be hard to play.)
I think that’s a smart choice for most people.
Thank you bayya.. You cleared my almost doubts about seaboard.. Love you from andhra.. 😘

Just subscribed after seeing the Tudor Black Bay on your wrist
Haha good eye!! Thank you for subscribing! You will see other watches in my other videos! ;-)
Thanks so much for the video! Just a quick question, the two buttons on the top of the BLOCK, do those change octave, or the preset? And can you use them to change the preset in Equator Player?
The buttons on top change the octave. If you want to change the preset, hold the mode button (on the side) and then the octave up/down buttons.
Exactly what I searched for, excellent video, thank you! Like/sub!!
Awesome! Glad I could help!
Two thumbs up!
Cool! One for home and one to travel with!
Yes, I'm lucky :-)
Sanjay i think that would be a great idea if you do a complete video comparing seaboard rise vs
Seabord block in rise mode with
2 seabord block 2 or 3 lightpad block and the touch blocks that you need to get all the features that you have in your seabord rise but with the blocks components.
I know that you can supply the faders with a lightpad block and X/Y pad with another lightpad block. But i would like to see how similar to rise seaboard it would be with all the blocks that you could need
Yes, something I've been wanting to show for a while now. I need to get around to it. Thanks, Hugo!
@Sanjay C
Hi. The presets(Equator?)are the same in the Rise and in the Blok, so 500vs200 presets?(one can expand the 200 presets for 79 dollars?) The sound possibilities of different instruments are the same in both the sistems is that right?
Great. Thanks a lot!
You are welcome!
Thank you
I love very much your videos. Keep it up
Thanks, will do!
Nice I like it
Nice information
Can you order the seabord block just to play? Or do you need certain tools or thing to play it
For me a very useful video to help me make decisions with a clear conscience.
Nice to hear. Which one are you going to get?
@@SanjayC I bought the Roli Songmaker Kit Studio Edition today. Delivery time 2 weeks. I also sail "close to the wind" with the purchase price.🤗
Hi Sanjay!
Thank you for the video! How about Sustain pedal? Do they work with it?
The Seaboard Rise has a sustain pedal input. The Seaboard Block does not, but once you connect any other sustain pedal to your setup (through another keyboard for example), the Seaboard Block will work with it.
Both look sweet! But the portability of the Block and its addons (and price...) takes it for me!
You are right. I remember having this in my backpack when I travelled to Vegas earlier this year!
Hello, good review. But how do you use roli products live? Can I somehow plug them into my amplifier which I use for my mics and guitar? And if so do I need to bring a computer or can I use an iPad or iPhone?
Garageband
Holy the rise is DEFINITELY on my some day list
Yeah, I love it!
Nice review!!!
Thanks! 🙏

hey Sanjay, great video, thanks for putting energy into making it... I'm thinking about getting the Roli Songmaker Kit but there's some mixed reviews out there ranging from 'great to play' to 'very complex & complicated' to 'poor with bad connectivity and battery power'... any advice would be appreciated... just about to check out a few more of your posts...
I've had a good experience with all my Roli products, BUT, there is a learning curve. well, not really learning, but getting-used-to-curve. I say its worth it. But of course, the price is quite high.
this is a must have. love at first site.
Awesome program
how does the rise function with Roli Studio?
For pitch shifter sliding VSTs in keyboards 🎹 in Logic Pro would the Roli Seaboard be a good solution, Continuum, PC2Rib, Ribbon2 or e Touche or Doepfer RM2
... or Vmeter in your opinion ?
Thanks 🙏
I also have both and while I find the Blocks really fine it's definitely too less keys for a player. Roli do you hear, build a 49 Blocks!
Dubby Labby Same price as always.... they often have “SALES”
I got my Rise 2 years ago... hasn’t changed...
it shouldn’t.... it’s WELL BUILT!!!
QUALITY QUALITY QUALITY QUALITY QUALITY
WELL DONE Roli!!!!
@@williamroark I don't know about that. I hear about issues with the rise and block far more often than I have about the Grand model... In fact I've heard zero issues about the Grand
@@davidlane1248 this looks so fun too, that sucks
Is it even possible to get the Rise 49 any longer? I can't seem to find one for sale anywhere. Would love to use it with Ableton 11 which supports MPE.
Seaboard block is more useful for me then the Rise. Plus it connects to the Blocks system and the MPE capabilities on the blocks are played on a more guitar like interface. Seaboard block is the best of both worlds.
Yeah, I think its a great option, especially for portability.
Nice 💛💛💛
Hi Sanjay, i am only beginning to delve into this type of music making, so i am asking your well-informed opinion and advice: in order to produce layered “space jazz” harmonic overtone compositions and play them live, which hardware is best? Ableton push1? Push2? Roli lightpad block? I am sampling analog instruments and putting samples as sounds on hardware to layer. Thanks so much!
Ableton Push and the Lightpad Block are such different devices. Ableton Push is meant to be a complete controller for Ableton Live. Its drum pad function is a bonus. If you're just looking for a drum pad, you'll save money by buying a Lightpad or another drum pad. I love my Push 2, for sure, but its overkill for some applications. I wish I had a better answer for you, but its more complicated. You should try to test them both out.
Thanks for your answer it is very helpful! Will see if i can do a test drive
Had a Seaboard Block for a while. Found the keys a bit small, and the rippled surface just seemed (to me) to get in the way. The device requires a surprising amount of finger force to play-resulting in quite a bit of friction-and this means the Block wants to slide around on the table if you don’t hold it in place. The Rise will stay in place better and may be a little easier to play, but I’ve only had a few minutes with one, and it didn’t seem drastically easier. I suppose either of these are pretty good for the money-and Equator is very good indeed-but I’m moving on to the flat, more delicate playing surface of Haken.
Yes, I agree, the Rise is much more stable - doesn't move around when you need to press a note hard. The Haken look pretty interesting.
Man, I can't decide which to buy. The block looks cool for travel and the cost savings are huge, but I feel like I would really miss having the extra octaves and full size keys. Also, I feel like if I bought the block and I wanted to upgrade, that would pretty much make the block obsolete... Too bad the price tag is so much different for the rise 49.
Yeah, its a touch decision. IMO, go for the Block.
I honestly feel like you get way more bang for your buck with the blocks. I was trying to find why the rise is so much more but tbh if I get two blocks and those attachments I would have way more control over the not only the sounds but also the daw itself AND it would be just about the same price as a Rise.
I think the block is the way to go, at least for what I want to do. Thanks for the video!
Keyboard someone brought back from 2055
😂😂
The seaboard (in my opinion) is so versatile that it can be the only midid device you bring traveling, as with some blocks it's, a midi piano, drum pad, and control surface. But for a large studio midid keyboard I'll probably go with the alesis vi61 or something along the same form factor
Yeah, the Alesis has nice keys. Good choice
Sanjay C holy cow u replyed, thx alot man, u just made my day 😃
Magnifico
:-)
I'm still a little confused. So with the Songmaker Kit you can do basically everything a Rise 25 do right? Other than the neutered version of Equator.
Yes, that's pretty much correct.
Good one Sanjay. But Seaboard Rise 49 or Rise 25?
I am more into orchestral and cinematic music. Plus I have a couple of controllers (Arturia Keylab 49) as well. But I really want that expression feature. Something I have been missing all this while. Which one would you suggest?
If you're a pianist, get the 49. You'll get frustrated without the additional keys otherwise. Especially for cinematic music.
Thanks for helpful review! What do you mind, Rise 25 has 500 sound presets too? Or only 200 as Block has?
I think the BLock is adequate, and then pay a little extra for the Full version of Equator and get those extra presets
Sanjay C agree with you. Maybe I ask it to ROLI
Lots more Roli videos on this channel!
Is the Roli works with regular VSTI (Serum, Nexus, Omnisphere, etc..)?
Good morning, I bought a Roli seaboard 49 four years ago, it has always worked well. Now, after a period of inactivity I have found that the touch faders do not respond to the swipe of the finger, they remain off! How can I solve? Hardware problem?
Thanks
I’m definitely gonna start saving to get the rise it’s so lit 💯
if you are still saving, check out Haken Continuum Fingerboard, much more then this
MUITO BOM
I'm excited to save up for the rise.
Its just a solid device. You'll love it.
I was lucky enough to get my 25 key rise on amazon for 200ish bucks since it was “used”. Which meant essentially brand new. Whether there was a previous owner or not, amazon warned of damage, which to my delight, was not there. So while i would keep a level of skepticism when doing that as I understand I did get lucky, I would definitely encourage finding a comparable deal. As for the rise itself, it is a solid beast.
Lucky!!!!
I'd really like to get a Seaboard Block or two. Maybe a Seaboard Block and a Lumi keys? But I feel like I'd get more out of the Seaboard because of the gliders on the top and bottom in addition to all the other features like the vibrato and lift, and I don't necessarily need auto-chords and arpeggiators, but that would be cool to have if I decided to get a Keys and a Seaboard and one of the other control blocks. All the extra software in the bundles would be cool to have, but I'm happy just using free soundfonts on FL Studio
I got a question that might Seem dumb but i'm really wondering, Can we use the roli seabord (the little one) with an other vst than the one that Comes with it?
Yes, you can
Hi, I play Guitar but I dont know Piano. Do I need piano to play the Seaboard Rise? Advice me please.
If u get ans plz info me
You don't need to already play piano before you can play the seaboard, althought it would help.
If you want to play the seaboard then learn the seaboard,
otherwise it would be like wanting to learn play guitar but instead you go and learn bass to help you learn guitar faster.
My dad has wanted to learn guitar for as long as i can rember,
but he alway tried to learn somthing easier first, like harmonica then cajon then bass.
He never realy stuck with it.
He has started leanring guitar now though,
but he could have started 10 or 20 years earlier instead of leanring something easier first
I hope that helps
Big difference for me is being able to use my Seaboard Rise on a Windows based laptop. All I've ever seen on Blocks was Mac only, and if you count the expenses of getting one of them you'll figure out, in no short order, the Rise is perfect 😀👍
Good point
I use a Block on a Windows machine, it works fine. Not sure where you're seeing Mac only for these.
Oh, Finally.. the WAITING was Over! Block vs Rise.
Yeah...took a long time! 😃
could you do a vid on lightpad with garageband ios? havent found one yet, sick vid btw
Yeah, I haven't done one on Lightpads with iOS. I mainly use these with Ableton.
Is FL Studio compatible with ROLI?
You may have already found this, but absolutely not. I bought a seaboard block, expecting to be able to use it with fl studio. The most it can do is work with some MPE compatable VSTs, but most of those are paid and I ended up having to use audacity to record the sounds from equator into fl studio. They just came out with their studio software, and it supposedly worked as a vst for fl studio. It did not. You could use the sounds but you had to use a traditional piano roll and could not use the seaboard. Apple is the parent company to Roli, and so, they put IOS first for their products and never once allowed Roli products to work with windows. Bluetooth is also disabled for the windows version.
Wow 😮
:-)

Hi I love music and this video is so awesome and I was thinking to start play on looper or something like that but I lost the magic of it that's why I keep looking for something and this come to me with very good feeling and this is a more than just looper I mean that u can do more on this "toy" 😆 that's why I want ask somebody who have it to help me.
PS: sorry for English
Not first, second or third, but at least here LOL!! I love my ROLI Seaboard Blocks! Awesome expressive sounds! Would’ve gotten the Seaboard Rise, but was pricy.
Yeah, I couldn't justify the price at the time either.
The “BLOCK” Seaboard wasn’t invented when I got my Rise 49....
I got the original light pad and looper, the Seaboard “BLOCK” is high on my “LIST”
(I LUV MY Rise 49)
where can I purchase this? i'm in south africa.
does it work with fl studio mobile and pc version
I need this
Thank you Sanjay C you are an insperation
..and you are my inspiration, Cosmic Keys!
Gotta cop on of these now let's be honest, I have just recently seen the massive drop on these on the market here in AUSTRALIA, we're talking $550.00 down to $350.00 for the block, the Rise is still up near the $2000.00
Its probably one of the most innovative expressive instruments I've played in years!
How many seaboard block keyboards can we connect? Is there any limit?
Welcome to the next gen. 😳😳👌👌
so it's a huge synaptics touchpad, where is the tactile feel/response?
Can we connect seaboard rise 49 with block?
Did i need on top boxes für the Sound?
When i get this one will it be a day.
I like that on Rise the keys themselves seem to be larger. With my clumsy ADHD fingers, it makes it look like it's going to be easier to play with precision without focusing on it that much, delving more into the intuitive feel rather than conscious control. On the other hand, some far reaching chords will be easier on Block, especially for someone with tiny hands that won't stretch as wide for purely physical reasons. Can you comment on that?
Also, if you want to have more keys, you can put a few blocks next to each other. How would that compare to playing Rise? Especially gliding at the point where 2 Blocks meet, there's not going to be a smooth surface - how much does that disturb the feel and sound of a glide?
And also, the ability of Block to be joined together with other ROLI products makes me think of Lumi. Do Block and Lumi go well together? I imagine for instance using Lumi with left hand for bassline and Seaboard Block with the right hand for melodies, or other combinations like that. Do you have any experience how such combinations would work together?
Great video comparing the Seaboard Rise and Seaboard Block! You’ve come a long way, Sanjay C.
