    I just wanted to mention in system preferences if you click on displays and then arrangement you can line the screen up evenly and you would be able to drag the pages straight over but I like mine to be arranged like yours is now instead of lined up unless all three monitors are lined up

    Thank you so much for replying its really nice when someone who does have a great channel like yours actually answers people's questions lol. I did go to RadioShack and get a converter / adapter and it did work. I was able to finish the install on my Mac but the screen was still black. I ended up running a hardware test found out it was the display cable and its in the shop for repair. I'm done trying to work on it

    wowww.. your video is a guide to me in 2021.. finally I've tried 2nd external monitor and it is working like a charm..
    even apple staff have no idea about this.. they said "my IMAC (late 2013) support only one monitor" 🤦‍♂️
    by the way both monitors are on TB ports to HDMI and 1920x1080p ✌️😎

    Thanks, yes it a nice looking monitor. I finally manage to get it working. After going through countless forums on net. One came up with this - on display menu, hold down option button and slowly plug in HDMI. Boom it works, runs perfectly. In iMac display menu still says no devices detected but still works.

  • @spiderwayne
    @spiderwayne  11 лет назад

    Sorry to hear your screen isn't working.
    This might work for you but you can't turn off you main screen so when you pull up settings windows you might not be able to see it because it pops up on the main screen. You might have might have to guess at where the window is to grab it and pull it over... follow me?
    The adapter is cheap, I say try it because you can always return the cable if it doesn't work for you.

    Go to System Preferences -> Displays -> Arrangement. Drag the windows until you are satisfied with how they align.

    • @spiderwayne
      @spiderwayne  10 лет назад

      Yes but with different sizes you're still going to find the same problem either at the top or the bottom because your taking from one or the other.
      I got rid of the two 24" monitors and replaced them with a 27" Apple Thunderbolt monitor so for me this doesn't matter anymore.

    • @MinecraftAppleMLP
      @MinecraftAppleMLP 10 лет назад

      Then I'd say that this video is outdated. I am using a thunderbolt display right now!

    • @spiderwayne
      @spiderwayne  10 лет назад

      Brian McCarthy Then I'd have to say you are wrong. Just because you and I both use Thunderbolt monitors doesn't mean everyone else does. This will still help people connect monitors they already have (non thunderbolt) to an Mac if they get one.

  • @flashinpan
    @flashinpan 9 лет назад

    The only drag about this is that there goes your opportunity to have a Thunderbolt drive. Having three monitors often means you do a lot of graphic or video work. Which means big files. Which means you need a place to access these files and the new iMacs don't really give you a lot of options. Especially if you are trying to maximize performance with a SSD drive for the startup disk. SSD drives are smaller and way more money. Internally, iMacs have exactly one extra impossible-to-get-to drive bay. Best I was able to do was have the main built in monitor and one extra.

    • @spiderwayne
      @spiderwayne  9 лет назад

      Al Luckow Thats not true. You can daisy chain which is what I did. I went from my monitor to a Thunderbolt drive to a monitor with no problems.

    • @flashinpan
      @flashinpan 9 лет назад

      SpiderWayne It's funny, I of course tried that and it didn't work. I think the issue is that if you go from a daisy chain to an "Apple Thunderbolt-equipped" monitor, then there might be success. In my case I'm using a Thunderbolt adapter and that might be the weak link in the daisy chain. Like you said in the video, buying a Thunderbolt monitor is probably not worth it, and I agree.

    I had an old iMac and it worked perfectly on it. A few months back I bought a 24" iMac with M1 chip. It won't recognize the 2nd monitor unless I use a splitter - which just makes them mirrored displays and I need them to function as 3 different displays. I don't know why apple would make a desktop in 2022 that didn't support 2 external monitors. Any work around to this you know of?

    I have a few questions for you... if that's ok?
    1. I've seen your unboxing video and I was wondering what are your overall thoughts on the iMac (hardware/OS etc) in general, now that you've used it for several months?
    2. How does the hardware perform during video editing/rendering etc?
    3. How does the graphics card perform with the additional monitors? Have you noticed any lag or stuttering at all (even during video editing/rendering)?

    It's 2022. I have a 2019 iMAC and there are those cables with USB-C at one end and HDMI on the other end. Can I use that for USB-C to iMac and HDMI to monitor? I have never tried but don't have another monitor to try. In theory, it "should" work? Or must I get the adapter and buy a HDMI to HDMI cable? Thank you

    I had a similar screen resolution 'mismatch' issue when I tried to connect a 3rd screen to a mac pro. Managed to solve it with a slightly more powerful (and expensive!) adaptor cable (Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter) which took some of the load of the main graphics card and opened up more resolution options on the 3rd screen… perhaps that might solve your issue there?

    Question, I have a 2013 27 inch iMac. I was in the process of moving while I was putting some stuff from my truck to my house some kids tried to steal my iMac out of my truck. When I walked out of my house they saw me, dropped my iMac and ran. Needless to say the cracked the screen. I did some research and like you I can't find an answer either.
    All I found were suggestions like the following (some seem a little silly):
    1) Dim your monitor as low as it can go.
    2) Create an image file that is at least 2560x1440px and open it max on mac screen
    3) Use either of these two programs Shades or SwitchResX
    If any of these work for you please let me know.
    Good luck!

      I still have them but now I bought a second 27" Apple monitor and found that I don't really need all 3 anymore. I am thinking about giving 2 of them away but haven't made up my mind yet. If possible stick with Thunderbolt monitors they work great and you can daisy chain other devices too. If price is an issue then I'd go with something like the LG (LED Back Lit). IPS type of monitors look really good too from all angles. The Apple monitors look great but they are thicker than the iMac and produce a lot of heat. I love mine but I could do without the heat. Good luck!

      You can try the same thunderbolt to hdmi adapter that I use in the video to go from your iMac to your TV. I have never connected to a TV but I don't see why it wouldn't work. Your iMac shouldn't need any additional drivers or software, it should just work. You can pick up the adapter from BestBuy or may places online. Good luck.

My iMac went to a black screen in the middle of the install of Snow Leopard and I cannot see how to continue. Apparently Apple is not acknowledging that this is a serious problem

      Thanks for Subbing! Wow this really sucks. I wish I could say for sure but the best I can do is say I think it will work. If I had a TV like this to test I would for you but I watch almost everything on my iMac and sometimes on my HDMI TV. Still I don't see why it wouldn't work. Good luck!

    I hope you see this on a video this old, and I know that is probably unlikely. I found your video while trying to find out how to connect my Mid 2011 iMac 21.5 to additional monitors. I don't know why but even apple seems to be clueless about their own products. I can assure you I am not incorrect. My 21.5 iMac has only 1 (ONE) Thunderbolt port not 2 as there is on your 27 inch iMac. Apple got shitty with me and told me "First of all you don't have one Thunderbolt Port you have 2". They are absolutely incorrect. I have the following ports on my machine, looking at the back and going from left to right: 1 Audio line out jack, 1 Audio line in jack, 4 USB 2.0 ports, 1 Firewire port, 1 thunderbolt port and 1 Gigabit ethernet port. With all this said Do you know if I can connect 2 more monitors to my 21.5 iMac utilizing the single (1, ONE) Thunderbolt port that is on the back and going into some kind of multi display adapter. Thank you for answering if you see this question

      Hello, I'm not sure if you can do it with just one thunderbolt port. However, I would look into these and see if they might work for you. Thunderbolt to a monitor that has thunderbolt in.... or thunderbolt to something like an HDMI adapter. Now here is where it gets really iffy, If you can find another monitor with an output you might be able to daisy chain them. A long time ago I had an external hard drive that took a thunderbolt in and it had a thunderbolt out which I used to go to a monitor and it worked. Another option for your second monitor would be a usb to hdmi adapter. However, you might not get full resolution this way but you could try it. Good luck!

      @@spiderwayne Thank you this is exactly the kind of infor I was looking for. Simple things to try that may or may not work. I can deal with this. Rather than being told by the manufacturer that I don't know how many ports I have. No lie in my head I said: Moth$%^$^$er I am looking right at this and there is only one port with the lightning symbol above it, can you see my machine... The difference between that video is they're working on a 2011 27.5 inch iMac and mine is a 2010 21.5 inch. I never saw them disconnect a thermal sensor cable which my hard drive definitely had. So I'm also hoping I don't need the LCD power cable oh well I will leave this up to the Mac repair guy. And I will tell you that, that display cable does not go back in as simple as it did in that video that's why I ended up damaging the end of it. Really it is seriously a good time to start seriously drinking

    Hi, you state that the thunderbolt displays max out at 1920x1080. However apples website states "Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to a 30-inch display (2560 by 1600 pixels) on an external display" what year is your imac?

    • @spiderwayne
      @spiderwayne  10 лет назад

      I did not say that the Thunderbolt displays max out at 1920x1080, I said that my 2 extra LG monitors do and this is due to the limitation of the LG monitors I have not the iMac. My iMac is a 2013 and it's maxing out at 2560x1440.

      I use the Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adaptor to get full resolution on my 30" Dell monitor ($99) with my 2012 iMac. I tried the adaptor shown in this video and it didn't work correctly - I think the problem was that it didn't show the full resolution of the 30" monitor.

The Mac tech I took my iMac to said there were hard drives for sale that had that notch for the cable to connect to. where he found those I do not know. Do you know anything about the thermal sensor cable that is sold on the OWC website?

      No disappointment at all. However, I have a real need for a Mac. A lot of people will say I wasted money because a Windows computer is a lot cheaper. Sure they are cheaper but I use software that only works on a Mac. Plus I love the Apple Operating System. Like anything it took some time to learn parts of it but it's a great system and everything just works. For my day job I'm a Windows computer tech and I use one everyday at work. I'm one of those guys that use to buy all the parts, put it all together, then install the OS so I know all about Windows but I personally prefer Apple. Now between iMac and Mac Pro, for me my iMac is perfect. I'd love to have a Mac Pro but I don't have a real need for one so I'll be sticking with my iMac.

    • @spiderwayne
      @spiderwayne  10 лет назад

      Ah Ha! Perfect timing since I was just looking into both because I'm thinking about getting another Mac Laptop. I still have my early 2008 Mac Book Pro that I use when I'm traveling but it's time for a new one.
      I hate answers like it depends on your needs so I'll answer your question as you asked it... "what would you go with..."
      For me I have to stick with a Mac Book Pro. The only reason is I need more ram, and a larger drive than what I could get with the Mac Air. As for CPU, I may not need more than the Mac Air has but I want all I can get... that's just me.
      Now here is the thing, I'm sure I can do what want, which is mostly video editing on the Mac Air with no problem but I'm inpatient thus my need for more ram, and faster CPU. If I just wanted it to surf the web and create documents and spreadsheets then I'd get the Mac Air for sure but I'm doing a lot more than that and need a workhorse so I'd go Mac Book Pro.
      And now here is the answer I hate but it does apply... It's really up to you and what you're going to use it for.
      To me, having more than I need today, goes a lot longer tomorrow and then eventually it's time for something new again :)
      If not subscribed, please do.
      I hope this helps,

    Hello SpiderWayne I could really use some help. I was wondering if this setup that you have here works the same as the previous 3 monitor setup you had for playing games because I have an Apple monitor and I want to put two dvi monitors on the sides of it. How can i make this work for playing video games using all three screens? Right now I have just two monitors and they only work separate from each other, in other words i can't use both screens for one long safari window.

      ralph venuto I don't think it will work. I tried but I could only get the game to play on one monitor. I think if you want it to work you'll have to connect all your external monitors through that unit I was using called MatroxTripleHead2Go.

      If you're getting a 21" you better double check with Apple... I don't think you can upgrade the RAM.

    On an iMAC with two USB-C adapters connected to a multiplexer which is connected to two projectors, not often but randomly they will switch positions ... i.e. Port 1 outputs proj A video and Port 2 outputs proj B video and will randomly switch so Port 1 outputs proj B video and Port 2 outputs proj A video. Is there a way to lock these assignments in the OS?

    so what do you do to add more thunderbolt ports? since the adaptors don't have a pass through for connecting more devices.

    • @spiderwayne
      @spiderwayne  10 лет назад +1

      I don't need more than the two that are on the iMac because you can daisy chain something like 6 devices per port. In fact, after making this video I connected an 8gb thunderbolt g-tech drive to one of the thunderbolt ports then out of the g-tech drive I plugged the monitor back in and it works perfectly. Here is the answer I got back from G-Tech when I asked about it "Each thunderbolt port can support up to 6 units and you can go in any order. If your monitor only has 1 port it will need to be at the end of the chain. Everything will still work fine."

      I haven't really found a good solution. I added an external Card bay that has two thunder bolt ports so I have a monitor running through it so I can connect a raid tower through PCIe, but I still don't have any open thunderbolt ports. for other peripherals. it seems like a design flaw.

    I will be getting the new iMac 27" that is going to come out in October. I want to connect total of 2 monitors and an HDTV to the iMac, so at the end I would like to have iMac in the center, two monitors left and right and TV on the wall.

      As for having two monitors connected I know if you get 2 Apple 27" Thunderbolt displays they will work. They will have the same resolution as your iMac. Otherwise you can connect two monitors like I did in this video and you should get the highest resolution that the monitors you pick are capable of. If I were you I'd stick with the same resolution as the iMac max at 2560x1440 (at least that is what mine is).
      I've never had a TV hooked up to my iMac so I can't help yo with that.
