Just an added item that might help eliminate some confusion; the Display Preferences that you displayed from your iMac are not available UNTIL you plug in the external monitor. Anyone looking at their current Mac and have not gotten the external monitor yet, might get confused.
@@TechStevehi I have a 2011 Mac I have just brought a Dell monitor I have a thunderbolt port adapter and HDMI to HDMI but Dell Monitor is saying no HDMI input from your device when I go into system preferences on IMac it recognise the monitor all cables are connected firmly can you help resolve the issue.

Do you know how long I’ve tried to find an answer to adding a secondary screen to my iMac? I always assumed it had to be an apple product since we all know they like to make things inconvenient. So glad to see I can just connect it to any standard monitor.... apple or not! THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

I swing trade stocks while I work on the weekdays and am in the process of becoming a day trader after the market picks back up but anyways I am waiting for Apples announcement for the iMac so I can get the newer model to day trade with and was wondering how to with a dual monitor of a different brand and you got it for us! Glad that you’re still monitoring questions. I would like to by a iMac model a1419 which has a thunderbolt port and daisy chain it to a Apple monitor a1407 which also has a thunderbolt port. My guess is it will work, what’s your opinion. Would like to do this instead of using a Mac mini or a MacBook Pro to use the Apple a1407.
If you connect it and nothing doesn’t show up on the monitor make sure to adjust the refresh rate or the resolution in system preferences . Also if you can’t find the screen to adjust these settings go to system preferences then displays then gather windows .
