You can also check individual galleries/museums to see if they have what you’re looking for, though you always need to check the rules for each specific piece of art (is it in public domain or not?)

    Thanks for this video. Do you know how you are supposed to list vintage work on Etsy? I've learned that as a reseller, I can't list things as handmade, but I also don't technically have a production partner either. I can't find an answer to this, and Etsy customer service is useless.

  • @aureliedally7222

    Thank you for this information. Important note : each country might have different rules. You use a french example. In the french law, even public domain art can be subjected to restrictions. For instance, you have to respect the original meaning and intention of the artist and can be sued by living people or organization if you don't, it is called moral rights. Caricature is always autorized.

      @LetsStartWithAngie OMG!!! This is EXACTLY what I have been searching for, for a month or so!!! Although I know the process of creating printable wall art from scratch, I am in the process of opening an Etsy shop offering 8 different sizes per vintage printable wall art but have got seriously stuck when trying to 'resize the public domain paintings' that I have curated so far, (e.g. from 1242px x 1024px to 1500px x 2100px/5" x 7"). I have been using Canva and Photoshop for my remastered versions but can't seem to work this out without the images becoming distorted from the original ... This is what is now going to be the difference between me opening my Etsy shop, and quite frankly ... Not😪. I do look forward to this video Angie and would be soo, soo delighted to watch it. If not, could you perhaps recommend a suitable mini-course that would definitely include my query for me moving forward, I would be so grateful?

    • @LetsStartWithAngie
      @LetsStartWithAngie  Год назад +2

      Thank you for your comment! Yes, you can definitely rank high when selling painting and public domain art simply because you can narrow down on this specific niche. For example, you could create a set of paintings showing seaside landscapes, boats, beaches etc and this style of prints (coastal/nautical) is much less competitive and as a result, you can rank higher more easily. Hope this helps!

    This raises some ethical questions. If I'd sell these as digital products, It would feel like cheating the customer by selling him something that he can get for free online.
    I would do this as print on demand though. selling the painting already printed and maybe even framed, that way the customer is spending their money on the service of getting the painting printed and framed, and not the one thing that he can get for free.

    • @LetsStartWithAngie
      @LetsStartWithAngie  Год назад +2

      Definitely see your point, I personally still think that creating a listing with great keywords to make it easier for people to find these prints and re-sizing it for different formats is worth the price people pay for it.
      I especially think that’s true with bundles of prints where the seller has spent some time (often a lot of time) trying to find prints with the same aesthetic or style. But, I can definitely understand your point! 😊

    • @erinsalmon5764
      @erinsalmon5764 6 часов назад

      @@LetsStartWithAngie Yes! the customer is also paying for your time and knowledge finding these prints and listing them online. They most likely would have not found these pictures or would still have to recolor them or resize them to their liking.

    I have a question about the pixel size: you mentioned that if you want to offer 24x36in, the pixel size should be 2600x1800 pixels, however from what I understand that size in inches corresponds to a much larger pixel size of 7200x10800 px ! Can you or maybe anyone else here help me to clarify? Does this have to do with DPI/PPI? (for printing 300dpi is needed, so maybe the pixel size goes way up?) Thank you!

    • @LetsStartWithAngie
      @LetsStartWithAngie  Год назад +1

      You’re absolutely right Johanna, this has to do with DPI. If you want the best resolution possible, you will want to go with 7200 x 10800 px but Canva won’t allow this as the design would be too large.
      I personally use Illustrator and I would strongly recommend investing in this software if you want to be sure you have the correct size for your prints.
      In the meantime, you will need to work with the limitations of Canva and maybe offer smaller sizes with high resolution.
      Thank you so much for the clarification, this was important information I should have included in the video, lesson learnt 😊

    • @johanna601
      @johanna601 Год назад +2

      @@LetsStartWithAngie thank you so much for your answer Angie, that was very helpful! I actually use Procreate to get my files ready for printing, so I can make sure they are in 300dpi and in CMYK (and that's where I create my own art anyway). And I do have to say that it's not easy to find public domain art that is actually large enough to be printed in high quality large formats. As I've understood, it's never a good Idea to enlarge them to make them fit the canvas size (that will most certainly result in bad reviews because of quality). So the solution I'm working with now is to first of all choose the largest files to begin with, and secondly try to come up with my own "posters" where the image doesn't have to cover the whole canvas (so with the artist name on top, a lightly colored background, or make collages from the art) - takes a bit more time than simply reselling the art as is, but imo it's worth it!

    I have my own Etsy shop, with all original artwork. I find this so unethical. I can't imagine selling someone else's artwork for personal profit. I found this video because I keep seeing shops with the same artwork and it made me curious. I encourage people to explore their own creativity and not sell someone else's creation. Also, if it's public domain, people are being cheated by being charged something that they could download for free.

    • @sidehustleanna
      @sidehustleanna 2 месяца назад

      Hey! I’m also an artist with original artwork on Etsy, and I do TOTALLY agree with you. However, some people might like the idea of paying for public commons art for the simplicity of having it printed for them without having to put in the effort themselves. I have a capability of printing off a Van Gogh painting from the internet, but other people don’t know how to do that. I’d also add, living artists who create original artwork have the added benefit of creating a lifestyle brand and a place for people to truly find joy and inspiration. Where brands on Etsy that just resell other people’s artwork are looking for a different type of customer - someone who isn’t looking for a unique and beautiful experience from an artist, but maybe rather something more affordable and possibly even temporary.
