A note for potential tourists - the British Library is not 'one of the biggest museums in the world' because... it's a library. However, the British Museum IS a museum. Come visit.

But the British Library (in the King's Cross area of London) does have a small permanent collection of books and documents on display, which is well worth a visit if you've got an hour or so to spare.

Top tourist tip: many British museums are free to visit, highly recommend V&A, Science and Natural History -there's a great day out right there!
(It seems they now make most of their money by merchandise and special exhibitions...)

Maps are and have always been some of the most expensive IP to produce, so they are not only typically under copyright but also stringently protected. Eg, most map makers inserted hidden errors in their maps to be able to tell that someone has used their map.

Where I get stuck is when Pinterest asks for the link. I don’t know how to get the link on my product on RB. Is it just the long URL that appears in the main search bar or whatever it’s called? Wouldn’t that URL be too long? Any advice is appreciated

Anything older than 1928 (as of 2024) - 95 years, is in the public domain. Digital copies of public domain works are also public domain, as long as they have not been altered.
Walt Disney made his career taking fairy tales that were in the public domain, and retooling them as cartoons. The fairy tales are in the public domain, but the Disney movies (at this point) are not. Anyone can sell the story or Snow White, without issue. You cannot sell the Disney movie Snow White.
As long as you keep that in mind, you should be safe. Having notation that a work is public domain is better.

Yes - many museum websites say that their work is under copyright. However, it is questionable whether they could ever enforce it. (They would have a hard time proving that anyone took the museum’s copy vs. Another one online. If it is public domain, they can certainly ask, but it is up to each person’s ethics as to whether or not it is belonging to that museum.

No "Public Domain" option for me.
You join with free option and it does not look anything like this.
As for "The British Library!" It´s a library dude, not a museum.
Flickr also has nothing to do with the library either, it was only a stand alone
public photographic community, were you could get advice and feedback on your work.
Yet later started to move away from only the photo side. Most of the photos there
should be protected and if not only posted at a middle quality range, not good enough
for printing on an A3 for example and permission should always be asked for prior
to downloading. What you see on screen is only a pixel for pixel online low quality
version, as the site has rules for that.
Searching for specific maps would be impossible, due to the standard subjects posted.
Also the old printed maps have nothing to do with Art, they are not even produced with
any Artistic intentions other than to give a perspective. Please think more about what you say,
you are allowed to be impressed by the skills, techniques and overall results in historically
recorded Cartography processes, including their limited printed quality, that often was defied
by just those limitations (line thickness etc) yet Art had very little to do with the whole process.

It depends on the site - but generally you would create artwork based on those maps and then put the art on products. So you could make a nice looking pattern or remove a background, lots of options to be creative. Or just have a shop that sells old map designs as is.

Yeah, the other commenter here is correct. The reason so many famous paintings, e.g. aren't publicly available is because the hi-res images themselves are owned by their respective institutions. The photograph or scan is a separate piece of media.

    • @ThePrairieChronicles
      @ThePrairieChronicles 7 месяцев назад

It depends who owns the copyright or trademark. Some authors, for example, left their intellectual property rights to corporations (like a health industry childens hospital) 100+ years ago, while others (like some big corporations or governments) have grabbed expired c or tm images and books and legally claim them as their own. Also, the phrase "in perpetuity" sticks in my mind, though I can't quite recall anything else about it.
My point is just because something's old doesn't mean it's public domain / free use.
