I’m still on the fence. I like the concept of a smart square, and honestly, I’m not an athlete, I would only get it to track my health as I will celebrate my 50th birthday this year. It would suffice for my use, but it seems cumbersome to operate. Wish it had the standard G interface. Thanks for the helpful review Greg, greetings from Belgium 🇧🇪!
Thank you for this exellent review! I have seen so many, and the normaly are fanatc - bad or good. You told us, who should not buy this watch and who should buy it. Great!
MIP Displays are very nice. Even if they can't refresh fast enough to show in real time 10th or 100th of a second, they can still show those figures during review. Are you listening Casio? Speed up the processor to eliminate button press lag too, I as well as many of you, I'm sure, would like MIP on G Shocks with traditional non-health related features. My idea would be A GW5610u-1 with added sun/moon rise/set data with moon phase and tide. Wish? Triple sensor? Too much? ;)
The screen, at least the one in GBD/X-1/200 watches *can* refresh faster than once or twice a second. This can be proven by timing a split time well in the stopwatch mode, the indicator for this can flash quicker. But the watch is programmed not to, to save power and as the used low power processor is very slow. Which is important for those models as they run on a CR2032 battery, with 1-2 years of battery life depending on Bluetooth usage. It's not really possible to dumbify this watch besides removing or disabling Bluetooth, as the large matrix display needs smarter electronics to drive it. At which point they might as well go out of their way to synchronise up-to-date timezone and DST information, like these pieces do. The sports tracking stuff are needless extras those, the aforementioned models lack this aside from a low power IMU.
I just arrived "late" to this Casio hype...but a Casio used to be my first watch back in late 1980's 😊 Own 2 GW-5610 U and 2 GW-5000 U;one of each for EDC and the other in box for collection!! This "almost" smartwatch Casio line seems very interesting to me.
New video, great 👍🏻 I really like both Casio and Polar. However, they didn’t get this watch quite right. I am totally with you mr Anderson. An old style G-shock with MIPS would be super 👍🏻
Nice one Casio. I've found this watch to be very useful at keeping me on track with my health and fitness and because it's so low maintenance its just the way I like it. Finally I got it for an excellent price too! 😎
Great review 👍 To the point. Allround specifications. In depth test of functions. Personal impression. Perfect information pace. That's why I love your watch reviews 👍👍👍 Must take forever to edit this quality content. Thank you for making these videos
I have enjoyed your calm and relaxing gshock and casio collecting vids for years. Sadly, I too have stopped wearing the simple digital watch and moved from the gbd h1000 onto garmin watches. I am not a fitness person, but I like the feedback and data that the gshock move app and the garmin apps give me. From daily steps to calories burned and sleep data. My wrist is never empty unless I need to charge it, but then I just wear another watch that is charged. I feel like I'm cheating on the simple digital watches, but I've accepted fitness/smart watch feedback
I'm conflicted about this watch. I could not care less about the Bluetooth connection or the fitness applications. But I love that MIP negative display.
Great review. Like you, i got a good deal on mine because it was last of a particular colourway "stormtrooper". I must admit I'm in both camps, G-Shock - Fitness Trainer. The purchase points for me are MIP display and having Solar assist. Are far as im aware this is the only Casio MIP with Solar. I'm not a fan with this particular with blue tooth on all the time. One of my other G-Shock with Bluetooth on the battery last for years making it for me a different ball game. I use Bluetooth on this watch once or twice a week for software update checks and syncing my light training schedule. The rest of the time i switch on AIRPLANE mode and with a customised menu i get the best of both worlds at the right price. In the future MIP will replace the current negative display.
I wore my old Pebble watch for years, Bluetooth tied to my phone. This looks like a step towards that direction with certain fitness tracking features added in over a Pebble. The Pebble had an odd proprietary charger cable too lol. I recall packing that charger on trips, but the Pebble held a charge for a week. When the gshock can report weather info off the phone I'll probably get one. I found the previous squares with Bluetooth disappointing, the app was clunky and had limited functionality for me. But this generation is getting closer to something I would actually enjoy. Maybe the next Gen will hit the spot for me. Until then I'll keep my square with radio time sync, really love that old standby
Enter and Back to navigate modes, on the case with recessed buttons. Utter design failure. Glad I didn't buy this model, as it would have been a mistake. Thank you for showing exactly how some of the functions work.
I dont consider any fail with the design of how buttoms works with this watch. Case cover them to protect them! And after a while, you Will noticed that have sense the position and functions of this buttoms. This IS my fourth day with this watch (black metal one) and really im falling in love with It.
Mr. Anderson, new watcher and will be a subscriber to your channel, nice to see a channel that disseminates GOOD information. Anyway, I am relatively new to Casio and I bought my first Gshock Tough Solar GW-5610u and I am wondering if there is a version of this exact watch but with a mips display? I mean literally, the same watch but only change is the display only. I don’t care for Bluetooth or heart rate monitors or any other junk features that will use up battery life and or potentially give my data to big tech.
Thanks for the review! I'd heard alot of people say they didn't care for the user interface, so I was hoping more reviews would steadily pour out in case Casio ever updated the software. Something tells me that's not a priority for them though, at least at the moment. I'm not one of those people who hates the idea of my watch connecting to bluetooth, but what I've discovered from my one bluetooth connected square and a pair of edifices...is that I *_detest_* the fact that the Casio app(s) are always active and have to have GPS data turned on on the phone/tablet, regardless of what I'm doing with them. The tinfoil hat in me won't abide it, and I don't see why I have to let Google know where I am when I'm setting an alarm... So I'd at least like the watch itself to have it's own GPS sensor and be able to interface with that in a way that's not too cumbersome...perhaps that's asking too much of a device even at $300? I don't know. Maybe one day, or maybe smart watches just never will be for me.
Thanks for showing us your collection. I think MIP is the way to go. Have you tried non-square G-Shocks recently? My favourite G-Shock at present is the G-Steel GST-B600-1A. It has an analogue main time and a small negative LCD display that is hard to read. I still like the watch.
Love your video. Can you tell us how long the solar capacitor (rechargeable battery) last before they need to be changed... and how easy it is to do or cost?
I see a lot of comments online, especially at the WatchUSeek user forums, in which certain folks worry WAY too much about replacing these rechargeable batteries. So far, my oldest Tough Solar G-Shock is still running on the original battery. The watch case has never been opened since the watch was manufactured. I bought it in 2006. Yes, the battery can be replaced but I wouldn't worry about it. By the time this thing wears out you'll probably just want a newer watch with whatever features are available in that faraway future.
Thank you. It fills me with confidence in the casio brand and technology. I've had a seiko kinetic and it needed a new rechargeable battery every 5 years... defeats the concept of kinetic and solar if you still need to replace the battery, especially when it was a basic dial watch!
Id came of using and Hybrid watch with no displays, and now is broken (sea water inside). After a while i decided to make an step to a digital one, but i dont wanted smartwatches. This watch its ellegant, and have all the functions and widgets that i need. Imnnot a sporty man, but lot of walking and running. My first choice was gbd2000 but it seemed to me a big one, with lot of functions and modes that really i didnt needed. So i bought this watch. For me works very well, and its very powerful and beautiful at the same time.
Good review. Though, the requirement to press Enter to activate a mode would get annoying. They should offer the option to disable the mode title screens, or allow the mode to automatally activate after half a second. This would save the extra button press.
So is it gray or blue? It looks gray to me but it is listed as blue. Some websites it kind of appears blue but on others I'd bet the farm it was gray. Just curious. Thanks
Not to mention if you want A fib detection you might want something else. I use a tic watch 5 pro with a nice aliexpress 24mm leather strap for that more in depth monitoring. It also serves as my beater for work. I wear my good watches on my other wrist.
I have an old Fitbit that I use strictly for sleep tracking and when I am exercising. I will wear it during the day every so often to get my resting heart rate logged, but that is it. The big problem I have with it is the. OLED display. I love OLED on my phone but my watch that I wear at night can't be turning on randomly. I currently have the screen off so I have to push a button to see the time. I still have to wear a primary watch to tell the time when using my Fitbit. I also would like it to have blood oxygen sensing. This may fit the bill as a replacement. Capable of functioning as a primary watch but having all the features of a Fitbit as well. Since I already have to charge my Fitbit, and this won't be replacing my daily wear watches, I don't see the charging as a problem. Now where can I find a good deal... I also would
Mine arrived 11 days ago, and im very Happy with this watch. For sure this watch Will replace your Fitbit. In health functions works accurated (believe me, working in Hospital ive tested this with health devices in the Hospital) and the results were the same in this watch and devices (ie Blood Oxygen test). Im not a sporty man so with Gym, Intervals, Walking and Running are enough for me. Indeed usually i have practice Walking. And this watch works excellent. Yes , no integrated GPS inside but paired with my mobile via BT, my routes are real in maps . Casio LifeLog works very, very well, but i have mi Casio Watches app paired with Strava. Everything works fine for me. Love the widgets aswell, and you Will be amazed with the lot of options this watch have and you can use . Lot of customization with this watch. After 11 days with him, and using a lot for test It, only one full Recharge was necessary, using all sensors and always activated, paired always with my mobile, notifications activated, eight walking routes, some tests HR and Blood Oxygen, HR activated always. ( Now im customizing to some unnecesary options that I dont need to activated always, tonsave more battery energy). And dont forget this watch its solar thought, so you can Recharge with direct light for some time. I think you Will not be wrong with this watch if youre like me. I wanted a Watch that could let me to be free of hadle my mobile and get out It of my pocket every time always someone calls me or every time i have a message or need to know about the time. So notifications are the mostest important thing for me, but include some widgets that i LOVE, and that healthy things are amazing. Maybe if you need more festures about health, gbd2000 would be more specially watch for you! For me, this watch its Great!
I read somewhere that this watch actually has TWO batteries, but I don't know if it's true. One battery is solar powered and is used for the basic functionality of the watch (basically the features of a regular g-shock watch), and the other battery powers the "smart" features so to say it, since solar power would not be anywhere enough to keep them running. Which means that this watch can run for months on a single solar charge as a regular g-shock, you just won't be able to use the smart features.
That’s more likely to be a rumor. Just one battery for all functions. When battery is low, all premium functions will be turned off. Only the basic Casio watch functions stay on so the solar charge can be used for longer time.
Not a rumor. Let me to know, this watch have battery charge using an USB cable, or you can use the solar panel when your watch its exposed to the sunlight. In both cases, this watch works with all of its functions. But if you are not using It for a while, Casio recommends to expose this watch to sunlight (or other light) for some time, to Recharge Its secondary battery. Yeah, with LOW level only basic functions still working for a long, long time.
@@ayoung17huang I just took the time to read the manual and apparently it's true. The watch has 2 batteries. One battery powers the basic functionality of the watch and is basically "tough solar", meaning these functions would never require you to plug your watch into a charger. Any extra charge from light isnused to support the secondary battery (the one that powers the "smart" features). Here's what the manual says: "Power generated by the solar panel powers watch operations and also is used to charge a rechargeable (secondary) battery. The solar panel is integrated into the LCD of the watch, and power for charging is generated whenever the face is exposed to light."
@@pawninwordsandsoon Ok almost got fooled by you. I checked the definition of the "secondary battery", apparently it means "rechargeable battery". It does not mean there is a "primary/first" battery and a "secondary battery". It just means there is a "rechargeable battery," which happens to be called a "secondary battery". So I still believe there is only one battery in the DW-H5600. Check this out: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rechargeable_battery
It's been almost a year. What do you think? I've been looking at these because I am getting fed up with my Fitbit. And my wife wants me to get something that looks better like a G-Shock. This fits both use cases
Good time to post such a video about G-Shock Squares, as I recently had an epiphany on why I don't have any squares despite liking their case designs. It bothers me that nearly all squares have a dot-matrix part of the display that is used to display the date/month and uses the heavily modified segment display for the day of the week, the same segment styled used in their cheaper watches. That always bothered me that Friday looks like F'R. In most of their other watches, like the circular g-shocks and Men of G watches they use 7-segments for the date/month and and dot matrix for the day, making it much more legible. 00:43 when the all the squares are shown, three of them have the dot matrix used correctly, the moon-phase square and two others, but that's it. Anyone else feel the same way? Or am I just being a snob?😅
I had the GBX-100, it was good but so many flaws, the menus are all over the place and as you show it’s not like the buttons we all know and love, plus the tide graph was a waste of time, it only shows the tide for the current hour, yes it’s got the wavey graph but it’s impossible to count the tiny little lines forward along the graph to see the tide in the future on that day- unlike my Gulfman which is superb. Casio need to do a lot of thinking and layout redesign of the MIP’s I reckon but I’d say DONT go touchscreen.
Ok, my hot-take, I’m not convinced with this G-Shock… not this one nor the rest of the MIP display watches like the new rangeman, maybe the GBD-H200 but only because this one looks more intentionally designed. But yeah, I found all this watches with the MIP display slightly different unrefined and underpowered for what Casio wishes and it’s competition already have in the market. Another thing I’m finding disappointing is Casio sidelining Multiband 6 in preference of Bluetooth, what I love about my G-shock squares and My Rangeman is their independence of battery replacement and synchronization, but I guess having the bluetooth connectivity makes easier to sell in places where atomic signal doesn’t reach. Overall, this square G is very cool just for the MIP display and the though solar, so congratulations. Thank you for the video.
@@jorge23483 The GBD-200 is great looking but the UI and the buttons response time is piss-poor. I received mine as a gift but if I would have to pay for it, the watch was going back the same day it arrived.
100% ive been saying the same thing. I love my GWX-5600 but absolutely hate the buttons. At the moment my favorite G-Shock is my GW-9400 but it’s definitely a much bigger watch than a square.
@@HLi-eu5er i have never seen those before, but they look awesome! Same functions as the GWX-5609 but with better buttons. Thanks friend I’m going to have to pick one up.
I like the G-shock design, but this just sucks big time. I'm used to my Apple Watch and this seems so outdated. I can't decide if I want any, it's just old tech what isn't worth the pricetag.
1. Их нужно заряжать каждую неделю! 2. I like the new display, the the other junk is just power hogging gimmicks. For me a G-shock should be power self sufficient and borderline unkillable timepiece that i can rely on everything else is just a bonus as long as it does not detract from anything else. Affordability is also important as i use mine for both rough work and active leisure I can't afford to or be bothered to worry about my watches secondary/collector value and i should be able to easily replace it without saving up.
Using It (learning how to use, customizing for me, and using all sensors..) by four days ago. Two walkings, BT paired always for notifications (vibs) and for use my mobile GPS, Heart rate always active, ...and still with 4/4 lines after four days of use, and raining day here. The first level IS HIGH when watch IS recently charged. Two Heart Rate and Oxygen in Blood tests and world fine, very well. And that things can be customized innthe watch itself or Casio Watches App ,to be more moderate, or disable It!
Its not the most accurate in terms of activity tracking. If you want your watch to track your movements and calories, get a watch from a company that does it best. This is not the most accurate watch imo.
Working in Hospital, and i can say this watch its accurated in terms of cardio, blood Oxygen.., because id tested with some Hospital equipment and believe, its accurated. But in terms of GPS , this one doesnt have one and must be paired with your mobile via BT. And my experiences with It , its that IS not so accurated like a GPS, but using my mobile GPS paired with this watch, and worked very, very well (indeed showed the exact streets where i have walked or running. And watch IS paired with Strava.
My personal view I hate negative display impossible to see and my eye sight isn't to good people don't want them casino don't list n to people customer 😢
I’m still on the fence.

@@ayoung17huangNot a rumor!
What was the website where you got it for 50% off?
hi greg can you confirm that there is no hourly beep? Thanks for your video 👍
Never had any problems: 20+ solar and multiband squares.
What website did you use to purchase this?
I think I may try MIP display in a more affordable model like the current GBD-200 or the GBX-100
@@jorge23483 The GBD-200 is great looking but the UI and the buttons response time is piss-poor. I received mine as a gift but if I would have to pay for it, the watch was going back the same day it arrived.
a mistake of Casio is they did not add the music control for the exercise, like the old gb5600b
All squares need bigger buttons, the newer MIP displays, Multiband 6, and solar charging. Leave the fitness functions to Suunto and Garmin.
100% ive been saying the same thing. I love my GWX-5600 but absolutely hate the buttons. At the moment my favorite G-Shock is my GW-9400 but it’s definitely a much bigger watch than a square.
Have you tried a GWX-8900? A nice classic.
@@HLi-eu5er i have never seen those before, but they look awesome! Same functions as the GWX-5609 but with better buttons. Thanks friend I’m going to have to pick one up.
Problem is that Casio wants to be "smart" but gets dumber all the time...
What website did you purchase your dwh5600?
How about a g shock vs timex Ironman review
I prefer the gshock next to it😊
Man, it needs to be charged weekly. That sucks man... the LCD looks dope tho.
MIP is a lot lot better than standard negative but still no way near as good as positive, negatives drive me mad!!
I just got a gba-900 and it is ok, but the app is a bit finicky
Ya, I struggle to read a negative display. Hey, what time is it? OK, hang on, almost there.😂
Thank you for *not* saying "colorways". Hate that idiotic phrase replacing "colors".
English evolves pal. Otherwise we'd still be speaking Old English. Get with the times jack.
where is gbd 200
I want POSITIVE display. Simple.
CASIO! RELEASE A 5000U WITH MIPS DISPLAY AND EASIER TO PUSH BUTTONS! AND MY LIFE WILL BE YOURS!
I like the G-shock design, but this just sucks big time. I'm used to my Apple Watch and this seems so outdated. I can't decide if I want any, it's just old tech what isn't worth the pricetag.

For me, it's a big "nah"
No 10th/100th seconds on a stopwatch?!... Storms out.
My personal view I hate negative display impossible to see and my eye sight isn't to good
people don't want them casino don't list n to people customer 😢
look at all the watches!
