  • Today we gonna do some beginner Tig Welding practice on some Stainless Steel! And make it a bit challenging by doing it on some thin stuff too! (1.6mm 1/16" 16 gauge) Shoutout to my friend Chad who suggested some episodes on welding some THIN stainless steel, so this is the first episode where I'll break down a few different joint variations. And today- the LAP WELD! Watch me as I try to keep this thing cool (almost impossible) and under control, to make a fresh looking weld! Hope ya enjoy!

    I love when people say to hold the torch at a 15 degree angle, then proceed to weld at a 30-40 degree angle.

    Dusty I'm new to tig, never did it be for and I'm learning so much from your videos. I like how you explain why something happened. The one thing I would like to see you add to the video is your current amps in like the bottom or top of the screen as you are working. Thanks for the great videos.

    Hey man, this channel rocks. I finally pulled the trigger and bought myself a TIG machine as I always wanted to learn to weld. I got plans to make a heat pump and that means it have to join aluminum to steal and I figure if that's possible it's only possible with tig. So hopefully I can figure that out in the next couple years. I am so glad you make these videos because I was thinking maybe I wasn't gonna be able to teach myself, but now I don't have to you're gonna teach me. I love your artwork by the way, I've never seen anything like it.

I know I have asked before but any chance you can do something on regular mild steel plate, does not have to be a full on art project just something small but enough to see the challenges? I know you said some time ago there were issues but it would be great to see how you would deal with it and how it compares to your stainless projects. Thanks & HNY !!

    Worth tacking the opposite side as well, stops the top piece lifting and distorting. Also clamp it down with aluminium or copper chill bars right close to the joint on the upper plate. It'll help keep it from distorting and will keep the bead from colouring up if you don't want the blue/purple etc.

    I’m in school and we’re doing Tig welding and it is a STRUGGLE for me. I’m just ver inconsistent some beads will have color some will be completed grey and cloudy. My professor tells me to just up my travel speed. You didn’t seem to go completely lightning speed, so I’m wondering why it’s always grey for me? GREAT VIDEO!

  • @ManishSingh-pn8td

    Hey Dusty, awesome as usual, my hero:). My welding is much more advanced since watching your videos. Can I ask how can you control the colour on stainless steel weld to achieve the desired colour? Can you achieve this on mild steel? Last question, I mostly weld aluminium castings and build fuel cells, I use a Lincoln 275 precision Tig with the advanced pulse control panel and I only use 2.4mm Tungsten with a normal basic size 8 cup, it welds rather nice(not as good as yours). So the question, if I use one of these new style inverter welders and maybe a gas lens would I benefit by achieving better results? Welding aluminium plate of 2mm and castings around 15mm. Thanks man

    • @PacificArcTigWelding
      @PacificArcTigWelding  3 года назад +2

      Good questions! I definitely reside in the camp of being able to lay down beautiful welds with a basic machine. Transformers, small cups, don’t matter. Take the time to set up meticulously, run some dry passes (no fill) to get gas/travel speed dialled, and then work into the actual pass from there. As far as colours, check this vid I did, ruclips.net/video/UJcn8W_Mv5I/видео.html it was a fun one of balancing feed amounts, gas coverage- just goofing around really:) Thank you so much for checking the vid out! I appreciate you a lot🙏

    I am also trying to learn Tig welding and I'm doing it the hard way... I have a 200amp stick welder with a (HZXVOGEN TIG Welding Gun WP26V). Which works well enough. I don't have any clear glass lenses yet and I'm using (2% Thoriated Red Tig Tungsten Assorted, 5PCS 3/32"x 7" + 5PCS 1/16"). I have been welding 18 guage stainless which is kitchen grade (316). I have been having a lot of trouble doing very good at all.. I don't have a peddle. So I have to adjust amps constantly. I don't have a sharpener for the electrode and have been using an angle grinder with a diamond tile cutting blade.. no ability to set the angle. Possibly not enough argon flow because it is difficult to maintain steady pressure with a manual nob to start and stop flow. With the setup I have it requires (scratch start) to function.. contaminated electrodes are normal for me. Beleive it or not.. I found that 308l flux core wire with a harbor freight 125amp flux welder works well enough but I can only overlap spots. So it's a lot of start and stop and it still gets really hot in order for the stainless to liquify.. so I know I basically need to upgrade my equipment and potentially be an "ok" Tig welder. Thanks for the education brother man!

      I dont think argon does that. It merely displaces oxygen. It is a heavy gas, so it could settle in your lungs, but breathing stirs it up and vacates it. I've gotten a little light headed from TONS of argon in my basement. Nothing about 5 minutes of fresh air and a cigarette can't fix. Argon isnt the same as carbon monoxide or other poisonous gases. Of course, I wouldnt want to be in a sealed pipe with an argon leak. Suffocating doesnt sound like a fun time until its completely over...

    Dude I’ll pop a dm sometime but maybe someone here will answer. My welds are oxidised so bad that theyre grey. Im not sure why, my gaa is good, got a number 7 cup at about 9l/min at about 45 amps. I know my cup might be a bit small but is it my torch angle perhaps or what else can i look at?

    • @m135i.
      @m135i. 8 месяцев назад

      I realised i definitely have to much torch angle watching this video but for a different reason. I sometimes drip a ball of filler way infront of the puddle, probably because i was pointing the flame from my arc more to the side and its reaching the filler rod. Instead of down at the material

    • @m135i.
      @m135i. 8 месяцев назад

      Nvm i found your video titled “why are my welds gray” 🤣🤣 lemme watch it quick

      I reckon torch angle and maybe like 40 amps.. im practicing straight passes on the side of a 1-1.5mm pipe

  • @taiwanluthiers
    @taiwanluthiers 5 месяцев назад

    The problem for me is that I can NEVER get anything but grey oxides. The reason is because by the time I am able to get a puddle, the piece about 1/2" around the cup has already turned cherry red. I've tried different current settings. Lower setting allows me more time, but it heats the whole steel up really hot. Larger amps forms a puddle faster but again, it just heats up the steel just as fast.
    I'm not sure what happens...

    • @sixpots
      @sixpots 4 месяца назад

      Lower amperage tends to lead to too much heat input overall. Working on the higher end allows more of a “get in and get out” approach. For the latter, you need to increase your travel speed to avoid heat soaking the piece. The other thing to check is your arc length. If the arc is too long, you won’t concentrate the heat you do have into the puddle. Consider doing a few practice runs at just drawing an arc, adjusting the length between way too long and dipping and make sure you’re right in where you need to be,

    I can't get the gold color at all and my yeacher won't pass me unless it's all gold. I came to welding school for stick, and tig is gonna get me kicked out of the school for not progressing and I haven't even got to what I l came to the school to do.

    • @shanesplanetshane3795
      @shanesplanetshane3795 4 месяца назад

      kicked out for not progressing, is a failure of the teacher, if you're actually trying. Schools are a business and they dont really make much money for kicking out paying customers. Your teacher isnt paying you, your teacher is on YOUR payroll. If you cant quite get it figured out, perhaps he has some more teaching to do. Maybe ask him for a little more direction. No need to remind him that he's being paid to do so, but he/is. I think gold is an indication of keeping the weld cool enough. Just keep trying. If they give you the boot, go somewhere else and keep trying. Don't get it twisted and let them forget who's paying who. Poor students indicate a poor instructor, more often than not. Why would you pay to be trained to do what you arent wanting to do? Its like you asked and paid for vanilla ice cream and they give you chocolate and blame you for it. Unless you're forced to go and in High School, you should get what you pay for, or go somewhere else.
