  • Another request came in via my Instagram, someone wanted help with Tig Welding tips for welding out a Mitred Corner! And I said HECK YES! I love this joint! It's really common, simple, and I would argue one of the BEST chances someone can have to practice getting dialled. If you can master this joint, then you are definitely styling and on your way to laying some nice lines on more difficult joint configurations.     I'm new to the channel, so perhaps you've done this in the past. I would have found it helpful to see the positioning of the work piece through each phase of the welding process. Also, perhaps talking through the pedal action/heat increase & decrease through the welds. Thanks for making these videos and showing machine setup at the start.

    Awesome video and awesome advice on tack placement!!! Another great tip that I hadn't realized can make a difference is when you showed that you had cleaned the inside walls of the joint as well. I just recently got a new Miller Infinity with the HD that enabled me to see that thin line of contaminant coming out of the joint and down the center of the pool. I did not realize it could be traveling in from the inside of the joint. I will be trying your tips in the morning!!! Thanks Dusty!!!!

    Thnx Dusty 🙏 I’m just about to GTAW A36 Sq. tube miter joints as slip joint corners for welding curtain frames and this definitely helps especially when planning the sequence of beads being laid down. The material is a little bit different but the principles of operation are the same

    Nice job. Of the scores of videos I've watched, yours is the first I've seen that emphasizes the length of time it can take for the puddle to take shape. During my "apprenticeship" in aluminum TIG, I've fouled up more welds by just not being patient enough to let the puddle form properly. Bad start, bad weld! Thank you for your insight.

    Great video Dusty! I would like to see a video of tig welding a fillet joint in thin material. I’m having problems with burning through or causing the backside of the vertical piece scaling. I’m working with 16 ga to 12 ga mild steel. A video that talks about controlling the heat would be great!

    Hi Dusty, a million thanks for your videos and making tig welding a very enjoyable experience even with some frustration. I you get a gap try this one. Joining two ally tubes together in parallel ( shotgun style) The pipes I have are 32mm OD with a 4mm wall thickness. I would send some samples, but nearly on the other side of the world. I do find this tricky.

    Really nice and informative video Dusty. Maybe talk about how much relative heat each type of joint needs. I know for carbon steel on a fillet I try to aim for maybe 10% more heat than a butt joint and 10% less on an outside corner, but that's just me and I'm pretty much a hack welder.     Grinding the out side corner back to about the width of your bead can help the weld profile.

    Really like your videos. Just getting in to them. I was welding up this joint this week (actually mitred alu angle - 2") and I found I was getting better results by grinding the open corners flat so I could get better pen. When I left the points on, I found them kinda thick. That said, the crap off the grinder wheel made the welds really drossy, even though I "cleaned" them with acetone :D What's your view on this?

    Thanks for all your videos. You've helped me tremendously with aluminum joints. Especially helpful is your emphasis on patience at the start of a weld in establishing a proper puddle. The difference between a beautiful and consistent bead and a row of sooty, ugly pebbles seems most often to be the result of impatience and poor prep.

    fantastic video! how do you know how far to press the foot pedal, you can not look at the screen of your machine while welding. I have that flat welds work perfectly, but as soon as I want to connect two pieces of aluminum straight or I blow a corner I blow through it too quickly. do you have a tip?

      I used to think so myself but but honestly just getting the experience is far more beneficial. Trial and error and playing with the foot pedal with the amperage he recommended will do wonders for you.

    Nice job, I have a problem finding radius corner aluminum tube. Square edges are hard to make pretty

      A little rounding of the corners with a grinder (within reason) will help the corner profile a bit:)

    Dusty, how much pedal do you think were you using of that 200A peak? I'm starting to wish I'd gone one or two bigger with my R-Tech (looks a lot like your Everlast, but 150A)..

    Should cut the weld see if u got full depth weld
    I stick weld and looking into tig weld looks amazing. Just wondering how deep it got because usually we cut the ends so it can get full gap fill between the two pieces instead of the weld just on top of each other sides

    What amps is the machine using when you are welding the joint? I know it's on the peddle at 200 max, but what is the display saying please?

    Was the angle of your joint 90 degrees when you finished welding? Its nice to have a great weld but ultimately the angle needs to be correct. Any tips for this.

    P.s. bro, idk if u have or not but, maybe next instructional one you do can include pipe butt/miter. Or maybe the common 3" intercooler aluminum tubing. Smaller tubing, not nuke and gas stuff lol. Pipe for the home guy and beginner. (Technique for exhaust, intercooler, cup holders, manifolds, whatever!) Oh, also, my random act was helping a depressed 14yr old kid feel a little better, who commented on one of my comments. Turned into a lonnngggg convo. He needed guidance lol anyway. PEACE D!

    Hey bro, one thing I notice is , a lot of people don't "V out" for the bead when doing tig. I mostly use steel but got my machine to dabble in Aluminum. Is there a reason for this or is it just on Aluminum?

    When welding aluminum do you go by the 1 amp per .001 rule? I'm doing a similar project with .065 wall round tubing and I keep blowing through it. I ended at 30amps and still blowing through before I called quits.

    Ok, this is good, but the joint I am really struggling with is a “T” joint with the same type of aluminum square tube. Never fits flush, because of the rounded corners. Having one fresh cut end welding to a rounded side, they always seem to melt differently. Any tips?

      Hmmm. Tough. It’s kind of like a Flange weld then slightly. Or J groove I’ve heard it called. Fill in the gap as best you can, as it’ll fall hollow. Keep an eye on the reinforcement and leg length:)🍻

      Yeah, the side of a tube will always absorb more heat than an open end. I try to aim/focus the arc more towards the side to compensate. Like welding thick to thin.

    When welding mitered corners on tubing especially thicker tubing as you do in this video . Why do you not bevel the edges of the tubing in order to get more penetration and a flatter finished weld ? I would have beveled the edge first was just wondering why you left it square and flat your welding is beautiful I’m not critiquing just wondering I can understand on thin tubing but I usually bevel thicker material 3/16-1/4 and definitely anything thicker

    OK, This was good, but..1st; it was hard to tell the succession of the weld joints. I think you kind of went over it at the end and if I understand it was "butt-outside corner-butt-fillet". 2nd, you need to describe about how much your stepping on the foot pedal. I'm pretty sure you did not weld all those joints at 200 amps. Maybe a little more narrating about the things you automatically do for us fledgling beginners. I'm just saying that the tasks that are second nature to you are not to a beginner.
    Sorry I don't mean to sound negative just trying to learn. Love your work and thanks for sharing.
    OH and one other thing. Any tips on using a foot pedal other than sitting, like standing up or kneeling down? I tried it the other day (I was welding steel, repairing a log splitter) and boy was that weird. I've always been a lift arc starter and am new to a pedal & finger trigger.
