Twilight Zone those fcukers! Call and say your brand new 190E won’t start and say you’re on a payphone. Convince them that it’s 1987 and give those people something to talk about for the rest of their lives!
One aspect of this car you forgot to mention ... it was over-engineered - *heavily* so. Which is the reason why it still works 30 years down the line as it did when it first left the factory. 80s era 190s are renowned here in Europe for being utterly bomb proof. One British car magazine reviewing this car described it as "it feels as if it was hewn from a solid metal block, rather than assembled from parts, it's that robust". Reliability of these is legendary over here, and there are examples running here with 300,000+ miles on the clock that still feel taut and well screwed together. Plus, in the UK in particular, this was always regarded as a niche car with a modest but dedicated band of enthusiasts, who had a habit of subjecting their cars to greater than average levels of TLC to keep them sweet. Consequently, in the UK market, it's unusual to find a second hand one *without* a full service history, and you should be VERY suspicious if you encounter one lacking this. It's also pretty common for examples with utterly intergalactic mileage readings on the odometer to have had only one or two previous owners, who had a habit of hanging on to the car long term. Basically, Mercedes-Benz built this one to last, and it has. Chances are some of these will still be running fairly sweetly in another 30 years' time, when they'll be well and truly into classic car territory.
I can relate to this comment. While living in both city and village when I was younger, I noticed one thing: this specific Mercedes was so popular back then that it was used in both rural and urban areas. It didn't target a specific demographic, meaning that it appealed for both poor and rich. It is something that modern cars are lacking.
The surface rust on the lower backplate of front control arm ball joints pretty much matches the surface rust on the front knuckle (250k miles, 28 year-old 190D) ... - I would say they still are the original ones. Just wow... carrying the front end weight constantly through the years, when stationary as well as moving. No play in both ball joints and rubber sleves perfectly elastic and intact. During bushing work, I found that the original LCA is almost rust-free aside from the rubber bushing bores. The rust inside was actually not from the LCA bore material. It was from the metal jacket of the rear rubber bushing, which just flaked off quick after persuasion with a small chisel/screwdriver . A set of good (Lemforder among others) bushings and good for another 25 years!
i sale today a lot and i´m not a car salesman but since they came out they never stoped being looked for,and recentelly the younger generations started to give interest for the 190´s or w201´s if it doesn´t fail me, so now again they are increasing their value, but i live in portugal and in the 90´s they even made a journalism work that said that we portuguese went to germany and bought them all, and it´s the most seen car in every location in portugal either than selling them i own 2 a diesel and a gasoline in mint condition a gasoline one and a diesel both have a 2.0L engine, also happened in 95 i drove a 2002 in mint condition for 2 years then i had to stop it was drinking a lot of gas. but i like camping in summertime ,and normally when i returned from the beach there were all days kids surrounding the car and asking me if it was really a bmw, normally german kids or a car colector, regards
who´s the guy that made that coment , the guy must be very rich to make fun of amplifiers with equalizers ,he must have a high-end system to do not care about an equalizer that helps some to try to match the sound an lp was intended to be listen to, it´s a matter of fashion ,first equalizers were a must have to any system than somewhere in the 80´s they started to say that the sound should be heard directelly without any changes on treble or bass or the loudness ,but not everyone has money to buy a perfect system that sounds good with all flat, with a cheap system if one doesn´t use some controls available on any integrated amplifier it would sound with no dynamic ,one should use the tools that one has to improve the sound, regards
If I could have any GERMAN vehicle from any year, it would be a 1991 Mercedes 500E. The engine put out almost 320 hp. It was also concrete proof that Mercedes and Porsche slept together at least once. Porsche engineers admit to helping design some parts for the car.
Paint job is still spotless, interior looks fantastic, car has run 200.000 miles and quality is rated as a 6 out of 10. I'd like to see Doug show us a car with a higher quality rating than this with the same mileage.
Richard Feynman , or more age appropriate, the 500E that came out soon after this model. On the subject of the 6.9, then he should really go back to the origin of the M100 engine, and review the 6.3 of the late 60’s early 70’s.
This was: my first car. My first giant crash. The first time an object saved my life. You DO NOT know what you are talking about! Versions of this same car are most likely the most reliable car ever built. Just look at Africa, old Toyota and old Mercs. Comparing general quality, reliability, materials, quality control to any American car of the day and it’s a generation ahead. That wood (the same you forgot to mention in the 98 navigator it’s completely fake) it’s real. And not only that, it has an innovative layer underneath so in case of a crash splinters won’t go flying around. You, the qwerk and features guy...ever seen a Mercedes with a handbrake in the middle? They’re only in a few models and there’s a reason for it like pretty much everything in these old Mercedes. You should be telling me this stuff! Not me. And by the way...I saw with my own eyes a diesel 190 with almost 2 million miles...got that? 2 million! The cab driver told me he was the fourth owner. Put it half a million with no issues at all
Amazingly that roadside assistance 800 number in the manual from 1987 is still the official Mercedes-Benz roadside asst. number. That has to be a record for roadside number longevity!
My father is the original Mercedes Roadside technician. His dealership started the program in the early 80's and Mercedes liked the idea and rolled it out nationwide based on his program. I'll just say it's a much different program nowadays and leave it at that.
I'll take the Merc 190E 2.3-16 above ANYTHING in your list !! This is just a quality-car.And if you drive and maintain it properly, it's a friends for life !!
The antenna thing is for winter. If the antenna is iced over in cold weather and you turn on the radio, the plastic gears in the antenna mechanism would strip since it couldn't force the antenna up. The switch was to keep the antenna down in that case, and also for car washes.
Can you imagine M/B rolling out a performance sedan and only offering it in TWO colours? Imagine McLaren rolling out a Hypercar only available in ONE colour?

After 30 years and 200k miles.. Paintwork looks nice, body panels sits perfectly, overall exterior looks great. Woodtrims inside are uncracked (yes they are real wood), leather in seats are not really worn out, all the knobs and switches and plastic parts looks just like it should. Engine and trasmission still works like a new and it drives smooth. Quality: 6/10... seriously? ... I wanna see todays cars after 30 years and see if they deserved their higher quality score. To think about it; I don't really see any american cars from that era driving around anymore. Benzes and few japaneses yes. I wonder where all the fords are... I guess they didn't even hit that 6 and therefore they didn't exist anymore.
The reverse gear "safety feature" is very common on stick shift gear cars in Europe. I prefer the ones where you lift a ring under the knob to activate.
Opel and Vauxhall had that ring too, that really was nice. I miss manuals and every time I go abroad I make sure to reserve a manual rental car. Often because I come from the states they hold an automatic for you if you didn't specify a manual ahead of time.
they all have that feature not having a ring around like old opel/vauxal or vw´s or other brands also, the old vw golf´s have a problem ,only some that instead of putting on first gear it engages reverse, but that is all destroyd gear boxes that are a vw problem but if you insist in repairing them it starts to happen i drove one like this and get highly scared when in a stop instead of going forward it done the reverse, regards
Do you think that someone like May would make that mistake 5 times? Its obviusly scripted. He is not a bad driver. He drives cars his whole life. It is his job...
Guys.... who gives a shit. Top gear is and was the greatest show of all time. The viewership and fanbase around the world made that possible. It's also possible that the reverse lockout broke before they bought it USED.
Doug, I FEEl YOU DROPPED THE BALL on this 2.3-16v REVIEW! I am a fan of your videos! With the hydraulic pump mounted right on the motor! What about the limited slip differential! ?! The limited slip that makes the car really fun when coming out of a sharp corner in a slide and you feel that diff help getting you traction again! What about the Factory real headers! on that 16v Cosworth Head! ? What about mentioning how nice those bolstered Recaro seats are up front! I feel you are not doing the 2.3-16v Justice! What’s more important ? The dash- in the 16v? Logo or Factory Headers! Limited slip diff! Hydraulic pumped rear self leveling system! Comfy firm Recaro bolstered seats! 😧😀
Doug's reviews aren't made for people interested in track performance. He test-drives on whatever urban or suburban road the car is on, and never takes even the most track-focused cars to the track. His reviews are all about what's it like to own and drive one of these things (on the road, not the track), which is why there are only two performance categories out of ten in the Dougscore that have anything to do with performance.

@@ryanhard5273 well yes but no, Americans regular cars are automatic cuz gas was always cheap and even with underpowered v8 in regulations during the 70's they had more that enough performance to not justify the manual, that's not even mentioning other factors like the leasing deals Americans get, we most not forget that a car at the end of the day is a transportation method and 90% of the population will go for the easiest to drive, manuals were and are more common in Europe based on the fact that people usually paid and kept their cars for a long time so any saving was welcome and automatic transmission weren't as efficient and small engines really need the extra help... Meanwhile sport cars with manuals were always fairly common in the states and while today every sport car manufacturer has pretty much moved away from the manuals even Europeans brands while still produce hot hatches with manual transmission anything up market other than a Porsche you don't even get the option in America you can still get one of the 3 ponies in manual form

Fun fact: The engine head was indeed designed by Cosworth, but the engine block is shared between all 4 cylinder Mercs of this era. This means the 2.3/16v has the same engine block as the humble om601 diesel from the 190d model.
Aw man why didn’t they make a 5 cylinder gas engine using the om602 block. It would have been cool to see them make more 5 cylinders. I love my om602 diesel, however it is not the fastest but faster then a om601 atleast.
You made me check it out. The OM601, 602, 603 are diesel, completely different beast. The gasoline 4-cyl. engines are coded M102, and were available in 1.8 - carb, 2.0 and 2.3L fuel inj., and the 2.3 - 16v (as in this viedeo) developed latter as 2.5 - 16v. That dog-leg transmission is awesome and rare.
Also, fun fact, I noticed in my dad's E-Klasse W210, although the mirrors are the same size, the passanger mirror makes objects smaller and the driver's mirror makes objects closer than they seem. I think that's their solution to accomodate for different blind spots on their later models as opposed to different size mirrors.

A set of good (Lemforder among others) bushings and good for another 25 years!

who´s the guy that made that coment , the guy must be very rich to make fun of amplifiers with equalizers ,he must have a high-end system to do not care about an equalizer that helps some to try to match the sound an lp was intended to be listen to, it´s a matter of fashion ,first equalizers were a must have to any system than somewhere in the 80´s they started to say that the sound should be heard directelly without any changes on treble or bass or the loudness ,but not everyone has money to buy a perfect system that sounds good with all flat, with a cheap system if one doesn´t use some controls available on any integrated amplifier it would sound with no dynamic ,one should use the tools that one has to improve the sound, regards

Exactly, today's cars are built to planned obsolesence. Throwaways.
The reverse gear "safety feature" is very common on stick shift gear cars in Europe. I prefer the ones where you lift a ring under the knob to activate.
The ring feature is common in Asian cars as well. It really is a good feature.
Opel and Vauxhall had that ring too, that really was nice. I miss manuals and every time I go abroad I make sure to reserve a manual rental car. Often because I come from the states they hold an automatic for you if you didn't specify a manual ahead of time.
Huh what?! It has a built-in safety features that you have to push down & in to engage reverse. Don’t need no stinking Japanese ring lol.
they all have that feature not having a ring around like old opel/vauxal or vw´s or other brands also, the old vw golf´s have a problem ,only some that instead of putting on first gear it engages reverse, but that is all destroyd gear boxes that are a vw problem but if you insist in repairing them it starts to happen i drove one like this and get highly scared when in a stop instead of going forward it done the reverse, regards

Doug's reviews aren't made for people interested in track performance. He test-drives on whatever urban or suburban road the car is on, and never takes even the most track-focused cars to the track.

AMG did race cosworth 190Es in DTM. And there was an AMG 3.2 straight 6 190E
DOUG, the Self-levelling suspension should have been mentioned. That was really something at that time in this class!
Hello Doug! Thank you so much for this episode! I'm from Germany and my grandparents both worked at Mercedes Benz. They always owned a Mercedes Benz, mostly the 124 models from that time. But I always fantasized about one day owning a 190E 2.3-16, so this episode meant alot to me. Of course the Evo II Modell was insane, wouldn't mind if you did a video of that model as well!!! Keep up the good work!!
I'm about to buy one of these with 73k original miles one owner. I am SO EXCITED.
Doug could you do a review of the Saab 9-5 aero from 1998-2005?
he should review a 1992 Dodge Caravan also
Why? That is a worthless dog car built for hairdressers. Best regards, Cleg Smegson
No no no he needs to find a wildfire 3 wheeled thing! Imagine what an entertaining video that would be.
I had 95 aero combi. 2.3T, 250hp/350Nm.
Very fast car in early '00.
@@jareknowak8712 Very fast car for 18 year old cheerleaders that's for sure. Anyway, we all make mistakes. Best regards, Cleg Smegson
190Es look soo fkin good, even the normal 4 pot base model ones look so goddamn great.
Had the regular 2.3 as my first car. Loooved it throughout high school, but always had overheating issues.
I really love the timeless look of this mercedes. ;)
According to Martin Brundle it “had one of the best chassis ever fitted to a four-door saloon.”
James may comment...
And that the M3 was a mere shadow of it XDD.
@@Isaackariuki775 Lol Isaac!
I love these videos! Doug is a huge inspiration to me and is part of the reason I decided to start making my own RUclips content! Thanks for all you do, Doug!
I had an '85 190E with an AMG kit. I loved that car!
Same, also had one. Identical to the 16v in every way but engine heads etc. Even had 5 speed/ clutch. Dark grey. I think Anthracite was color but looked like the same color as the blackish 16 valves. Loved that car.
@@chrisroher622 Did your head gasket blow too? Lol
@@BathtubBass No that car never missed a beat Lol.
Check engine light comes on
Gets out car and looks under the bonnet
"yep still there"
You didn't talk about the third brake light, the most quirky thing on the car
I think he didn't include it because he already did in the review of an old S class
Finally you turned to The Queen of all cars. It took you so long to get to this one. Been waiting forever!
Shows one of the most reliable cars ever built and states the quality is nothing special... You are kicking some elderly German engineers in the balls by doing this. The 190 might be the best car ever built. Handling is great, it was pretty quick for the time, it was affordable, it was comfortable, it was stylish and incredibly reliable. I see them daily where i live. Some with more than a million kilometers. And most of them still look perfect. That's just an example of how reliable they are.
