That induction noise is superb and the exhaust really compliments the car. Couldn't care less about the on paper figures being quite modest, the sound and responsiveness is sure to make up for that :)
As a e30 m3 owner and m5 owner. This is the only merc im seriously looking at adding to my garage. These are the same age as me. What an era for german cars the 80s was.
@@smh1245 The comment was about metal exhaust tip not entire system. Some premium cars today have two regular pipes hidden behind bumper and fake exhaust tips. And also about sound. The 16V is on my list of ‘the fifteen cars I could afford ten-fifteen years ago but did not buy and I deeply regret’. I still had a 1985 2.0 auto and I loved it, apart from the uncomfortable seats.
My Dad & I are finally getting round to sorting the restoration of his 2.3-16 that's been in the family for over 30 years now. Just came back to watch this as worthwhile inspiration. The entire 190 16v lineup are something special. Would kill to modify the 2.3 to get closer to the performance of the 2.5 power-pack, just to squeeze a bit more out of it.
Thanks to JayEmm for a super day! great to give the car a run out and as a former 500e owner all I can say is the 190 Evolution is completely different gravy to drive..

I had all so a amg power pack 25,000 DM for the upgrade that time😍😍 245 km on 4 gear to the 5 gear and than a full gear to go and back shifts its spitting fire
Friend of mine (Cosworth Phil) used to have an RS 500 Cosworth. He had the option to buy either his Sierra, BMW M3 E30, and the Cosworth 190E. Make matters worst he sold the car to Ford at Dartford a year or so later for the same price he’d paid for the car new. Probably worth over 100k now. Great video James
You’ve got yourself a classic review right there! Type of video you can come back to. A legendary DTM special screaming down on British back roads. Couldn’t do wrong with it really.
If I bought this thing, first thing is a visit to the exhaust shop and remove one of the mufflers on that system and just enjoy the sound. Give the people what they want...!
I am far from being a Merc fan, but this thing is one of my all time favourite cars. Fast enough, but not so fast that it's boring at any legal speed (my biggest complaint about my current car, yes that makes me spoiled) and it's got just the right amount of frilly bits to tell you what it is without being quite as OTT as the Evo II. Have to comment on one other thing- "I've knackered my driving shoes" tells you that you're in the right job ☺
Been a while since I saw one of these..... and the guy that owned it, well, no idea what modifications he had done but the end result was a premature death 😡😡. Glad to see one that survived. Thanks 👍
That exhaust is phenomenal, and not just for being lightweight. Y merge right after the headers, where it makes most sense, then what looks to be "gruppe A" 65mm single pipe rest of the way. Sounds just right, not obnoxious, and for that might even get a slap on the wrist pass in countries that demand E/EC mark and papers.
Designed before the computers that simulate vehicular aerodynamics were designed! Which is why it looks awesome. No natural inclination to trend towards a wedge shape. They had testing tunnels for aerodynamics back then, sure, but the car design process these days has caused a homogenization of design, to some extent. The natural progression of the evolution of design for aerodynamics has taken us to the wEDGE (and back a bit, you could argue too)! I guess it might not be the fault of the design process and more an increased status of importance being bestowed by manufacturers on speed and performance, and thus aerodynamics as a factor of achieving required performance levels. Not all manufacturers, mind, but some have gone all wedgy. Some more than others, too... That's my contribution. Thanks for sharing the video. Was great to see this classic being driven as it was intended - with its awesome 'soundtrack' - rather than just ogling it stationary. I really appreciated that. 👍
My father, who's eighty, had one of these. He owned well over fifty cars in his life excluding race cars, and he told me that the 190E was the best car he had. He did own a lot of Alfas so perhaps has low standards.
Hi james, big follower since the last few months of your channel. I really love your videos and there are quite a few id thought to comment on(like the 4.8is one where the limpmode was on...). Well the brakes are actually rated quite good...being 4 pot calipers and such...mabe rubbers and brakepads didnt give you a good idea. Btw if you ever decide to come to germany for a test, we could organise a ride in some of amgs premerger w201s with 2.6(@185hp) to 3.6-12(@250hp) or even a 3.6-24v or 5.5 m113 one.
