There was something seriously wrong with that Hammer. They’ve been known to easily crack 0-100 km in 5.0 seconds dead and go on to reach a top speed of around 190 mph.
You have to go through the gears, not leave it in D, that way you can redline 1st and 2nd then you have to shift into D
The issue is probably that Matt was a bit afraid of the lack of TC. The Hammer (and most of the 80-90-s mercs with auto box) has a button under the gas pedal, and you have to absolutely floor it to make it start from 1st, otherwise it'll take off from 2nd gear.

Most cars today are heavier though. It’s not just transmission, the power band in these older cars was much narrower. That combined with Matt not allowed to launch using the clutch and you get these rather slow times.

That Hammer started in second gear! It had the same gear from 0 to 60 mph, changed gear at 60. So my bet is it started in second gear 👍🏼

How much will we save on this Mercedes from the UK’s top dealers.
I've got a 2009 CLS63 AMG with the AMG 6.2 v8 engine and the 7 speed semi auto gearbox and the fastest 0-60mph time I've had was 4.3 seconds but that's on a dry day, in the wet it's something like 8 sec lol as the yellow warning triagle light flickers on an off on the dash while the traction control is taking care of all the wheelspin !!!! - My mom has a 2003 E500 4 matic E class and its bloody damn good in the wet ! ....So good, that I wish my AMG was a 4 matic with all wheel drive as that E500 is a brilliant car and so underrated !

All old Mercedes automatics started out in 2nd gear, you would only get 1st unless you mashed it at low speeds or you selected it manually. I noticed some people mentioned this happened with the AMG W124 and that's why it was so slow, but the same thing happened in the 230E (which is a 4-speed auto, not 3-speed)

You should have used "2" and not "D" on the old autos. In my experience they react much better under hard acceleration.
60+years old 300sl 0-60 😱 in 9.4 seconds, most 4 cylinder cars still take that long, 6 cylinder around 6 seconds and v8's 4-3secs 👏👏🙏

My first drive ever was 1976 in a 450 SEL 6.9 a few days after i was born,sadly i can't remember.
300sl was definitely the best out of all. Almost 70 years old and it is as fast as a warm hatch of today. Nice!

@@willemkanon4020 yes. If I recall correctly this engine is fuel injected so it is quite an advanced engine especially for its time.
Vlad Mihai yea after seeing this I researched a little, it's the second car with a fuel injection system. It's actually a mechanical fuel injection system which is fucking bonkers. It was too complicated for normal production cars. Leave it up to the Germans to make something so intricate.

I once had a 230E like that, but in manual (and bottle green) - '85 model I think. Can confirm that it is both slow and super comfy. I loved that car.

This was a fun episode. I've owned a 2003 CLK55 AMG and that thing could haul ass but more importantly it felt so heavy and stable at high speeds I loved it.
You didn't use the kick down on the hammer you just gave it full throttle which sets off in second gear. To make a hammer launch, you must go full throttle straight away, hold it at full throttle whilst pressing the kick down, if you don't it will just meander along in second from a stand still, which is really slow.
One way or another everyone had a memory with a Mercedes.
