A real bisexual petrol-head I’ve never once complained about that. If people are going to eat steaks then the hide should not go to waste. But my comment was more about value for the money- prices go up every year and quality goes down. If mbtex/leatherette/whatever is cheaper to produce than leather then why would that not be reflected in the cost of the car?
My ex-girlfriend had a 400E. It had a 268 horsepower 4.2 liter V8, and it would go like hell for a car of it's size and weight. Rare car, but not as rare as the 500e. It was one step down from the 500e, and still cost $55,000 new. Just an awesome car to drive. Back then, 'luxury' meant build quality and performance. Now, 'luxury' means, "It has the biggest touch screen in it's class!"
The 500E is still one of the greatest cars I have ever experienced. My father had one, his partner in the office had one (still has it) and an NBA player in town had one too, all three were the two tone gray. My uncle also had a 400E which was cool too. I still remember one day we took out a Corvette in the 500E, good times.
@Kevin Pocasangre It was an amazing car, seen less of those than I have 500Es. My uncle still kind of regrets getting rid of it. I had a neighbor years ago that had a Mercedes 300CE, those were rare as hell too.
Exactly what I thought "We found a solution but we have to build it ourself, it's too wide - Ho ok. Wait ! What if we remov... - WE HAVE TO BUILD IT OURSELF !"
That makes no sense because Porsche was specifically hired to make an engine fit in the W124, then Mercedes wanted the same progress Porsche made to the SL class, but again to the E class.
A happily semi-engineered coincidence I assume. Smart move if they did. Also Mercedes helping out, bet they went "meh" back then and a bit more "scheisse" today.
James Thompson Porsche didn’t “make the engine”, they were hired to install it. It was the M119 plant from the SL. I believe there was also tricky rear-end work to be done via Porsche since the normal rear/end from the E series wasn’t bulky enough. I always assumed the front flares were to accommodate the fatter front tires for better handling. They did offer a 4.2 V8 sans the flared fenders, so I’m surprised the 5.0 took up so much more room that they had to widen the fenders.
Only thing their all getting old and if your front bushes and shocks are worn out the whole car rocks side to side with the wiper, the arm is heavy enough for the motion to rock the car, I know my shocks need replacing on my 94 W124 E320 Coupe.
Abraham Yedwab if you mean, for the wiper, you will be shocked how much better it is than regular twin blades, but if you mean how the engine stalls under heavy rain when you just go into a deep puddle; you just need to seal the e-coil with a couple of plastic bags and you’ll be fine :)
I had a 300E 4Matic from the same era and Doug barely even touched on the best thing about these cars. The quality is amazing and no other car feels as solid on the road.
I agree, while I don't have a 4matic 300E, I can easily say it's one of the most reliable cars ever made. The only issue I can think of on those are the not so great head gasket.
Barely, he did. But it was a tank. If I remember right, I paid just over $60,000 in 1993 for a brand new 500E. The phone in this center console does not seem to be the default way of using it, there used to be a phone carrier assembly on the inner wall of the passenger side to carry the phone, it was a Nokia at the time. The assemly in this car seems to be US-spec? The climate control in this car is typical for US-spec, it is the automated climate control and it was not as good as the normal one, because this one only has single-zone climate control. The normal one would have two dials for speed and positioning and two separate wheels for driver and passenger to control the temperature. The name change happened in June 1993 by the way, not 1994. Interestingly enough, around here in Europe nobody really cares a lot about the Porsche thing, it is just a fact but the car is not more valuable because it, it is more valuable because it is a very good Mercedes and all good older Mercedes get more expensive over time. The idea of that from what the dealer told me was this action of the pivoting was to keep the blade clean of debris while operating. I have to admit it did get rid of a few pine needles in my past ownership.
Well, the wiper was actually very cool at the time. It was one of the most elaborate wipers ever made. In fact you failed to mention that it had a mechanism that makes it extend in the corners and retract in the middle for maximum coverage.

I absolutely love how these look from the exterior... they are so nice looking especially with the flares. I love MB but this beats the new stuff hands down to me in the looks dept...
The 500E is amazing, and despite being in the same vehicle class as the e34 M5, I can’t compare the two. I like them both equally for totally different reasons. The 500E is like the perfect highway cruiser with its healthy V8 and automatic, and the M5 is all about fun with the amazing I6 and manual box. Love em bothZ

Hey Doug! you forgot another thing to recognise a 500E.. the wheels! in a standard 300E24 with optional 8 holes wheels you get those of the 500E but in 15", only in the 500E you can get 16" from factory. Cheers from Argentina!
@@michaelheimbrand5424 I believe these wheels were first on the R129 500 SL in late 1990. They were optional for the 500 SL . The 300 SL / 300 SL-24 had the wheels like the later 300 E-24
@@michaelheimbrand5424 W124 500E was launched with the eight hole wheel design first seen as an option on the R129 500SL in the same size - 8J X 16 ET34 with a 225/55/R16 tyre.

@@dergipsyking6265 Nah, Alfa Romeo, Lexus, and BMW are enough competition already. Merc could be leading the whole pack in brand image and market share but Porsche had to make a comeback and ruin everything. Imagine how badly Volvo would be doing if SAAB was still around.

I had the same thought. He just takes all the information about these cars to another level in a geeky way. Also the way he describes the quirks always gets my rapt attention.
The designation "E-Class" wasn't given to any car in the Mercedes lineup until 1993, for the 1994 model. So technically this is not an E-Class, but instead a W124. The last two years the W124 was built, it had the name "E-Class". The reason it's called 500 E, is because it's a gasoline car, the "E" in german for Einspritz (fuel-injection).
@@calebm.5698 LOL you sound hurt. Nobody cares about how many car guys you have when America makes the shittiest cars in terms or reliability and quality

Before I knew what the 500E was, I pulled behind one at the Philadelphia airport. Had no idea what it was, but immediately knew it was special. Have not seen one again since.
If you want total enthusiasm, this is your man. He is just so fun to listen to...you can tell his loves what he is doing...and it shows. Way to go Mr. Doug DeMuro
15:14 The Mono-Wiper for the windshield had the advantage to clean more of the area than two wipers are able to. It's cleaning about 95% of the windshield while two wipers do about 85-90%. They only stopped buliding it for cost reasons, the engineering and manufacturing is much more expensive. One wiper for the 124 cost about 650€ (720$).
@Ike N Jaguar borrowed it or Mercedes? The Mercedes system was designed to pivot on the arm to increase and decrease clearance and sweep more of the screen. The Jaguar didn't have this system. Neither of these cars were the only ones to have single wipers but the Mercedes system became the most advanced.
The most important factor of the 500e is that they new it was going to be an instant classic. They only imported 1500 cars into the US. Values increased because there are less prime examples in operation.
"E" stands for "Einspritzer" which is equal to "i" for injector. Diesel engine cars were accordingly marked with a "D" e.g. "300D". In 1994 they created the "E-Class" based on that letter and therfore they put the "E" in the front. BTW, the "C-Class" was originally a "190E".
They did, and with more models like the 190E „Baby-Benz“, which was an answer to the successful BMW 3, they got the problem of distinguishing the models. That’s why they created the different classes. Even the „S“ in e.g. 560SE stands originally not for S-Class, but for „Saugrohr-Einspritzung“ which indicates an indirect injection system of the engine.
My w124 has no airbags. The passenger airbag over here was optional, so they used the glove box to put the airbag, and rigged tue central console cover to make up for it. The console ends up having more room than the original dash glovebox, though. Oh, and there should be pockets down the front doors too.
The car is an executive performance sedan. You would see someone driven in this thing. The lack of storage up front, the ashtrays, the rear shade, the larger rear handles (for hanging coats, dry cleaning, more room to hold on, etc.), the volume adjustment for the rear, and the phone in the car all can be attributed to it being an executive performance sedan. Those are just a few examples. It's a special car.
@@dense_and_dull You are wrong. Excluding the base models, pretty much all w124 E series have the same exact front interior (the back of the 500E is certaintly nicer but that's expected when buying the highest trim model). My w124 platform 1995 E320 Wagon has the exact same front interior. The 500E wasnt like that because it was made to drive people around it was like that because all the damn E series are like that!! Was my wagon designed with driving people around inside? No. The 500E was marketed to working class males and families. Typically people not being chauffeured around. Wouldnt the phone be in the back seat if the car was in fact designed to drive executives around?? Wouldnt it have some type of rear seat adjustment or more leg room? The S Series were designed with chauferring people around. Not an E Series. Trust me, I know the w124 platform.
the interior of the 500e has different seats, the premium wood finish, and the rear seats have no middle section. QUITE different than a normal w124 thank you.
I just love when companies can help each other like this. Just because they are rivals doesn't mean that they are enemies. Huge respect to Mercedes-Benz for helping Porsche. 😍
Well I am German and I didn't know that. Always wondered why they had this E in old Mercedes cars, which was certainly not the E class (that they use as a term nowadays alongside A,B,C,E,S Claas)
yeah... And that was also an m119 v8, you could literally drop the 5.0 from the 500e into the 400e with no mods. Not sure Porsche had their facts straight, think they just wanted fatter tires on it for driving dynamics reasons.
@@skylagg5537 no one wraps their car as a "racing cosmetic" idiot, rice parts are bodykits, spoilers/wings and fartcans that are made for show and do nothing to improve the performance

Hey Doug! you forgot another thing to recognise a 500E.. the wheels! in a standard 300E24 with optional 8 holes wheels you get those of the 500E but in 15", only in the 500E you can get 16" from factory. Cheers from Argentina!
The 16" 8-holes are from W140. Just as the engine.
Fran Ruiz yeah, and in Russia we called them "camomile" for similar design with flowers 🌼
@@michaelheimbrand5424 I believe these wheels were first on the R129 500 SL in late 1990. They were optional for the 500 SL . The 300 SL / 300 SL-24 had the wheels like the later 300 E-24

W124 the last mercedes that feels really solid and well built. I miss that feeling when driving newer e-classes

Doug is the type of guy makes car engine sound from his mouth when driving a Tesla.
I do that. 😮😯😲😔
Yes, the single wiper is an "interesting engineering priority. It actually wipes more of the windscreen than two wipers.
I'm surprised he didn't mention the extending wiper arm
for me, it's the most effective wiper ive ever seen
Well, there are two headlights, and only one windshield, that's probably why there are two headlight wipers, and one windshield wiper.
@@davidgrayromero It's a brilliant piece of engineering. Pretty much all Mercedes had it. Sadly it was dropped for cost reasons.

"E" stands for "Einspritzer" which is equal to "i" for injector.
Diesel engine cars were accordingly marked with a "D" e.g. "300D".
In 1994 they created the "E-Class" based on that letter and therfore they put the "E" in the front.
BTW, the "C-Class" was originally a "190E".
so how did they differentiate models? did they just not share engines between models?
They did, and with more models like the 190E „Baby-Benz“, which was an answer to the successful BMW 3, they got the problem of distinguishing the models. That’s why they created the different classes.
Even the „S“ in e.g. 560SE stands originally not for S-Class, but for „Saugrohr-Einspritzung“ which indicates an indirect injection system of the engine.
Einspritzung
@@chrissweb Negative, S stands for Sonderklasse.
Doug: "this midsize sedan doesn't have a glove box!"
I am: "damn, that definitely minus 1 point in DougScore"
