- Bennett Spring State Park is more than a trout fishing oasis for local fly fishing. The spring itself is considered one of the largest in the state and depending on flow, it ranges from 6th to 3rd largest in Missouri.
Arriving the night before, we were greeted with dark overcast lighting with gentle rain and vibrant colors. The next morning the sun came up to provide a clear bright day, we couldn't ask for more. We made our way to the trailhead after our third stop as the park store, which served as a visitors center, fly shop, and ice cream dealer (yes, we did). The trailhead is beyond the spring and after making our way past the hundreds of fishermen competing in a tournament, we geared up for the hike. Despite the swarms of competitors, the trailhead was not busy, and we only saw a few other hikers on the trail.
The natural tunnel itself is unexpectedly large and comfortably hidden in the trees. It requires no climbing, scrambling or crawling. Late May offered countless butterflies, blooming flowers and a thick green canopy.
The Hike:
Distance: 8.6 mi
Elevation gain: 679 ft
Time: 2h 27m
Cell service: spotty
Comments: trail is well marked and maintained with plenty of signs, multiple benches. Water available at trailhead
Beautiful.
Missouri has some great cave attractions.
I was a boy growing up in the 50s and my family drove down to Bennett Springs for a week ever spring. Great memories.
It's so beautiful
I would love to go back and explore more of the springs in that area. The area is absolutely beautiful 😊
They are so impressive!
God’s great creation.
So nice; great job, Ryan and John.
Natural tunnel, or as they are more commonly known as in the Ozarks, a cave.
Good trout fishing!
When I was a kid I hiked the Spring trail and counted 17 Cottonmouth needles to say I did not do it again
