    Hey Todd,
    I just finished installing some floating shelves using your brackets. I feel like there's a few things that folks should know about your brackets and perhaps an opportunity for you to improve the odds for a successful install.
    #1) your instructions call for a hole to be drilled in the bracket that is mounted inside the shelf itself so that a set setscrew can be put through from the bottom to lock the shelf in place. This hole needs to be threaded in order to install the set screw. That would require that the installer have a tap and die set. Luckily, I did. However, I wouldn't be surprised if many DIYers don't. (I might also mention that your instructions could be clearer on this, to include the drill size needed so that you can tap out the hole) Why not just drill and tap a few spaced holes for them? It wouldn't be that hard to then drill a matching hole in the bottom of the wood so that the set screw can actually be used.
    #2) and this one frustrated me a great deal... Let's be fair though, the wall I was installing the shelves to, like many walls, was uneven. Couple this with the fact that you state it's okay to use a bracket that is at least 1/2 the length of the shelf. I was installing 4' shelves using your 2' brackets. That leaves a descent amount of shelf that extends beyond the end of the bracket. I specifically did not over tighten the brackets and there was still absolutely no way those shelf brackets were going to catch the wall brackets, as the wall actually had a cup to it. Even after placing a single washer behind the bracket, I still couldn't get it to catch. I ended up placing TWO nickel sized washers behind the brackets at each stud. This worked, but it sure as Hell was not as simple as your videos. You make no mention of possibly needing spacers behind the wall brackets for some walls.
    Now, before you go and say, "Holy cow, Gary, how dang crooked were these walls?", let me just say it was a very nice house and with a very typical "NOT FLAT" wall. You need to mention this and come yp with a solution. My recommendation: some sticky spacers that can be applied to the back of the wall bracket should they become necessary with some clear instructions on how they can be used and maybe even a video showing the process. What I can tell you for certain, and I hope anyone thinking of using your brackets, read this, those brackets NEVER would have worked without the washers.
    Would I use your brackets again? Yes. Still a great product but clean up the issues for the DIYers out there. Thanks, Gary

    For those who find cutting an inside dado like this intimidating, I've found starting by lowering the blade to half this height or less far less problematic. Combined with a sharp blade set, holding the shelf tight to your chest while lowering it reduces the potential for kickback issues. As with anything woodworking-take your time.

    Great video and very informative. As a finishing carpenter with over 24 years hands on, this shelving system is much needed! I've noticed a few comments regarding the use of the table saw.....this is perfectly safe when being done by a competent carpenter. Well done! I have a job coming up for a pantry unit requiring floating shelves. I tried talking the clients into using MDF with a finished paint because I know full well the types of floating shelf hardware typically available would not suffice for their needs. After finding this?!? Definitely going to purchase a few sets and proceed to use solid wood material! Thanks:)

    You might want to keep in mind that this method might be okay for short lengths of live edge that you had in your video. For longer lengths, such as the one I am about to make, it is white birch 64" long and 2 3/8" thick, and heavy. I don't see this method will be easy to do in my situation. I think I will have to look at either using a hand router or use my timber frame chisels to clean out the back. Also, if your shelf face isn't perfectly flat you risk having the recess being uneven as you run it along the fence. JMO

      Hey Phillip, the price tag may seem steep at first but it's a premium, ultra-strong product, and it's worth noting that you don't need to use the bracket at a 1:1 length ratio with the shelf - you can cut it down and use it at a 2/3, or even 1/2 bracket-to-shelf-ratio in many cases. Not sure if that affects your thoughts here or not, but thought we'd share in case you were interested! Either way, thanks for checking us out!

    • @jalowey
      @jalowey 2 года назад +2

      Considering the cheapest heavy duty float shelf hardware out there is @ $100 for a 43" length and only holds "200lbs".....this is a much cheaper alternative. You can find cheaper hardware, but the materials used and the weights supported don't even come close to a comparison. You get what you pay for....and from my extensive experience this product is dollar for dollar the best. Added the that, it is far more versatile with different shelving aspects. You don't have to custom build a shelf to meet the individual hardware application. You simply have to gain it appropriately, which is the bare minimum you have to do with other systems anyway. I have well over two decades of hands on experience in the field and don't represent this company in any way. This is just an honest, educated opinion.

    How is the holding strength calculated for longer shelves? For example, if I pieced 2 47-inch tracks together, would the entire shelf hold 300 pounds or would the capacity increase with the integration of more studs?

    • @hovrstrongsolutionsinc.3490
      @hovrstrongsolutionsinc.3490  3 года назад

      Hi Andrew, more studs is always going to give you a stronger hold - we say 2 minimum for the shelf in general, but obviously as you go longer you are going to want to hit as many studs as you can for the best hold/strength. That said, we are not saying to go above 300lbs because of more studs - weight distribution is a big factor, so adding more studs is going to give you the capacity to hit that 300lbs on a longer shelf rather than add further weight capacity - an 8 foot shelf in only 2 studs is obviously going to be very susceptible to how it's loaded and where, whereas more studs will give you a much more stable install. Either way, you want to be reasonable about how you load the shelf up - you certainly don't want to be loading the entire 300lbs on one side of the shelf for example. Hope that answers your question!

    Whats the max recommeded depth for the shelf?

    • @hovrstrongsolutionsinc.3490
      @hovrstrongsolutionsinc.3490  2 года назад +1

      Max recommended for full strength is 8-10" - once you go past there, you start to incrementally lose strength from the full advertised capacity as you move further and further out and the leverage increases. You can do deeper shelves but you definitely want to reduce weight accordingly, keep it towards the back of the shelf, and make sure it's well distributed when you start getting into very deep shelves.
