Instead as we now know today, its not going into space but staying on Earth that makes one go insane.

The beautiful Maria Landi is still with us, at 90 years of age . This is the first American film I saw in the US, in the summer of 1959, while vacationing in Key West . I saw it at the drive in movie in Stock Island. I was 11 and it was quite a thrill. I didnt understand the language but I followed the action. Loved it. This is the first time Ive seen it since then and , beside a few small mistakes (like the "Mexican" farmer speaking with an Italian accent and then with a Portuguese accent, lol !) the general story was great . I have the video, but it wont play in my American dvd player. I need to get one that will play it. It's fun to watch . This is one of the better quality "B" sci-fi movies of the era .

Pretty sure I haven't seen this one before. For the record, the real first man in space was a Russian named Gagarin. I think his first name was Yuri, but not sure. It's been decades since I read about him. The first female in space was also Russian. Can't remember her name, but her call sign was the Russian word for Seagull. I have a children's book about her titled It is I, Seagull, and it's been decades since I read that story too. I do remember that the Russian authorities had her and Gagarin travel to events together, and eventually "arranged" their marriage, but it was mostly a show marriage, so it didn't last.🚀
Marshall Thomas, who played the older brother in this movie, played a veterinarian in Africa in a TV series called Daktari. The series got it's start from a movie called Clarence the Crosseyed Lion, in which MT first played the role.🦁 I remember watching the first run show when I was a kid.😊 Yes, I'm that old. SIGH!🙄 It was a nice show. Hmmm... Maybe I'll rewatch the series soon. The holiday season is coming up, and this family friendly show would be a good fit.🤗👍👏 OCTOBER! Yes, I'll watch it in October, as an antidote to all of those promos for creepy, spooky, horror movies!
Anyway, back to the current movie.🎬🎞️🎭

@@graemesmith6721 She was a rarity alright. No woman can go anywhere alone. They'd have no one to talk to.

Valentina has been a courageous battler for gender equity against the exclusively male Politburo, and since. When her flight concluded, she landed by parachute just a few miles from the China border. She knocked on the door of a rural family and ate lunch with them. They did not know of her space flight, as the USSR did not publicize missions in advance in those days. They figured she was a jet pilot.

Quite good for its time. All the effects were very good - the rocket being released from the B52 and it’s flight into space and the transformed pilot looked suitably repulsive. The colour effects, though far from perfect, definitely made the film more enjoyable. Better than some movies released in the 60s and 70s!

That's not correct. American astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts both reached space in 1961, before anyone did so in the X-15.

The special visual effects in FIRST MAN INTO SPACE were accomplished by Florenz von Nordhoff and Karl-Ludwig Ruppel, who also worked on FIEND WITHOUT A FACE. Both features starred Marshall Thompson.

It must have been quite a shock to Americans when just two years later the first man into space was not from the USA but from the USSR.
The monster - the transformed space pilot Dan Prescott - is just silly. Yoy simply die at that altitude from that kind of accident. Being in space cannot change you like that. I guess most people didn't yet know much about space and radiation in those days.
An interesting movie for the time but almost unwatchable now. I wonder what people in 50 years time will think of our present scifi horror movies...
