    Really good Pete, you even addressed the ‘pop’ issue that arises when one take is suddenly lopped off, and another takes over. For those who think the ‘pop’ is not that big a deal, mostly, during recording, that is true...but wait until you compress/expand the flaming thing, boy, does a compressor work hard to make an ear-splitting crackle out of a minuscule pop. If people do have this effect persist, and maybe did not take Pete’s advice to diminish it by fades (see Pete’s other video on track automation of volume/gain), try using track automation (pre-programming the volume level varying over the length of the track) at the MASTERING stage instead. I had one song, the noise was imperceptible, right up until i stuck a compressor plug-in onto the master track, then it jumped out. Again, see Pete’s video of the trick of mastering in GB iOS, by share/import into a ‘blank’ new song. And yes, I am a fan of Pete’s. Good luck everyone ! Happy face emoji ! Grateful to Pete Johns emoji !

      What a wonderful comment my friend! Genuinely enjoyed reading that.... does that make me a little vain? Probably! But seriously, this one was from a while back and I probably should revisit it soon. Great points made here about the fact that those little "pops" can get amplified when you start compressing your sound, and you might need some fades and automation.
      Thanks again my friend. Appreciate your support and kind words.

    Wow! I just came across this video. I've never noticed this feature before! Is this only available for microphone tracks? I normally only use internal/MIDI instruments. Can't wait to check out my iPhone again tomorrow! LOL!

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  3 года назад +1

      I think it’s only for audio tracks? I must admit that I don’t use it a heap. It it’s pretty cool if it works for your workflow

      I'm thrilled to report that I found this amazing feature in the MIDI instruments too! In Track Settings>>Recording. There are 2 options in there: (1) Merge Recordings and (2) Multi-Take Recording. Thanks again. I never think to go digging for all these neat features! Such a powerful app.

      You're very welcome. It's not just this video it's ALL your videos. I fumbled around with iOS Garageband for months, using other online resources, learning next to nothing and about to give up, and then I stumbled on your videos, & made 10 years progress in two evenings. You really have an immense gift for explaining things clearly. Apple should be paying you for this.

    How are you monitoring the guitar to headphones so the vocal track doesn't pick up the guitar track?

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  6 лет назад

      Hey Adam. Thanks for watching and for your question. With earbuds plugged in to hear the guitar, they do a really good job of isolating the sound while singing vocals. There is a very small amount of bleed in the silent/very quiet parts but in the mix it’s barely audible. Give it a go - I think you’ll be surprised how effective it is.

    • @sleekitwan

      As usual, I defer to Mr Johns, but additionally here’s what I do...I use a curved screen ‘pop-mike’ thing, a couple of bucks from ebay. It’s basically a rectangle of metal gauze looks like the stuff used for tea-strainers, or a flour sieve, and about the size of two cigarette packets put together ie half A5 or so, but they force it into a curve with a plastic skeleton frame. Imagine a 3-inch long piece cut off a gutter, but in gauze, is wot i am saying. The basic technique is to get a big blob of blu-tac or plasticine, and on the split cable of Apple earbuds that has the control/microphone built-in. you cover the earbud holes with blu-tac, i just do the main orifice and the slot nearby. This kills ‘bleed’ from singing or speech into the in-built mic on the same strand of cable....I have my earbuds plugged into the ipad or iphone at this point, so am monitoring what is going on via garageband.
      So, take this blu-tac-blobbed microphone/control strand and thread it through the rubber bands they give you with this curved pop-protection shield, that bridge the ‘open’ face of the ‘gutter section’. Arrange it so the in-built mic/control of the Apple earbud strand is situated in the middle of the pop shield. Stick the blu-tac earbud onto a part of the plastic frame of the pop shield just keeping it out the way.
      Now, you put the remaining earbud in your ear, and use that to monitor while you sing! As Pete says, the bleed IS tiny, but despite that, we are mostly perfectionists it turns out...! I blame the incredible signal-to-noise ratio we have now on these digital systems. ! You notice every pop and fart, where in the old days, there was so much hiss, crackle, and clicking and buzzing of unshielded Fenders, none of this mattered.
      But if you are doing a nice breathey piece, and want no accompaniment, taking advantage of this digital quality, this blu-tac and pop-shield trick really quells virtually any bleed from occurring. The issue of course is the proximity of the in-built mic to the earpiece, which the blu-tac takes care of. I just use the curved half-barrel sieve of a pop-shield, as a handle, and hold it while singing into the mic. SIDE NOTE... I just realised, if you are stuck, you can literally use a tea-strainer or a sieve, but just don’t video it, people won’t be able to listen for rolling about laughing. In that case, just blu-tac the mic section of the earbud cable, in position in the middle a bit back from the position of mesh/gauze you will sing through.
      Pete’s great, and I am just contributing my 2c worth, hope it helps. I learned a boatload from Pete’s expertise he’s disseminated here. EDIT worth buying a four-section extension lead for the earbuds Apple sell. I got a red one from ebay, but look for FOUR-part connectors, in order the controls etc work as they should, 3-part connectors can’t do that i imagine.

    Thank you for the video. For some reason the multi-take feature is not working on my iPhone 7 and iPad Air 2. The previous recording is overwritten. I am running GarageBand version 2.2.1. Any ideas as to why it is not working?

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  7 лет назад +3

      Hi There. Sounds strange, though I have experienced the multi-take option turning itself off on a couple of occasions. It can be adjusted for each individual track, so make sure you have it "on" (will turn blue) in the "Track Settings" for the track you are recording. Also, make sure you have space available on your phone/iPad to handle the additional recordings. Hope you can get it working as it is super handy.

    • @ZabDevin

      Thank you for the reply. Figured it out: Song length cannot be set to "automatic" when multi-take recording. It will not work. I set song length to automatic when I imported a downloaded song from iTunes.

    Can I record several tracks at the same time, multi take?

      @@PeteJohnsMusic on my new iPad Air, with the M1 chip, I tried to record my upright bass in two channels, one with a mic, the other from a pickup. Multi-take failed to work. It was turned on. I ended up moving the project back to my 2014 iMac which lacks the processing power I need. It freezes up in the middle of a take. 😩 Thanks for your channel, you give very useful information 👍

    Hello Pete. Thank you again for your wonderful tips and support. I HAVE Put on multitakes option, but feeling very frustrated as I had to make the most of some alone time at home for that recording session and the multitakes didn't work somehow. I had indeed activated the on for that option, recorded a couple of times but it just overwrote it. Any idea? I'm thinking about un install reinstall GB , but not sure where the project are saved and don't won't to lose my project. Thank you

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  4 года назад +1

      Hey there. I have found multi-take a little less than reliable and usually just use multiple tracks to record takes now. Uninstalling and resinstalling may help and worth a shot. Make sure you check where your project is stored first. (Check in the recent tab). Move it to the "iCloud Drive" location to ensure you don't lose anything.
