    I’ve been considering one of these to pump fresh water into my duck pond, and to transfer hand pumped water from my well to a 330 gallon holding tank. Sounds from your review that it would be a good purchase. Thanks for the heads up on the zombie apocalypse weapon aspect of it.

    I bought 3 of the prior version and 2 failed within 1/2 hour of use. They also need a lot of amps. I tried to use a PC power supply with all the 12V sources tied together and it wouldn't do it. A 12VDC car/RV type battery will do the job, but a power tool battery might not get there, the amps are likely too high for standard batteries.
    The quality level wasn't very good and they are noisy, but they do move 5GPM and that's a good flow rate.

    Quick note...the manual specifically states that this pump should only be used to pump WATER and that is should NOT be used to pump "fuels, cleaning fluids, or other chemical products." Love this item. I just bought a 2nd one after the first pooped out. However, I think that it's my fault it pooped. The manual also states that the max temperature for water should be 120 F and I was pumping very hot water to clean the unit out after using it to pump some dirty water. I won't do that again. The 2nd unit included the Seal Washer and Impeller so I'll try to replace those 2 items on the first pump because I may have destroyed them both.
    Quick follow-up. Yes, I totally destroyed the Impeller on the 1st unit so I just used the Impeller and Seal Washer that came with the 2nd unit and Voila! the 1st unit is working like new. Of course, now I've got 2 pumps but it's OK. Ya never know when you'll need the 2nd one. I've put in a request to Harbor Freight about obtaining additional Impellers and Seal Washers and I'm now waiting to hear back from them. Oh Happy Day!

      I use this to pump waste oil and transfer diesel fuel.. Out of the box Its not terrible with waste oil, but you can’t pump diesel fuel with it more than once without modification.. The impellers that comes with these are obviously low quality and cheap hence the price point.. Pumping diesel with the stock impeller causes the diesel to react with the rubber the impeller is made from and it will swell up and basically bind within the pump body and not allow the motor to turn..
      The work around for this is to buy a nitrile impeller. Nitrile does not react with diesel like rubber.. As long as you don’t run it dry very often- this setup will last a while.. My first setup lasted me three years and I used it almost everyday.. Pumped thousands of gallons of mostly hot waste oil, and hundreds of gallons of diesel.. Using it in freezing temps, and pumping cold oil will cause the motor to run very hot. Ultimately the commutator will end up getting burned, and pitted.. Remove the brushes, and spin shaft by hand with small soap stick stone to clean up the commutator.. I use the 120V version mostly now.. After swapping out the impeller with a quality one- it will last for a while.. Clean the commutator every now and again.. That’s what ultimately causes these to not function as intended..

    • @serotonin67
      @serotonin67 Год назад

      @@mlke4258 I like your efforts and results with your longer term daily use. Very impressive. Do you have a link to a Nitrile Impeller for this Drummond 12V pump? So, My little use is once a month to move 4 gallons of waste oil through a couple of oil filters and then return back uphill 6 ft to an engine crankcase. Am using a little drill pump now with ease for light duty workload. But am starting to see a little oil is seeping out around the center of the impeller connection and the seals holding the housing together. So far it still works fine... but you know these little drill pumps appear to be leaky.

    • @mlke4258
      @mlke4258 Год назад

      @@serotonin67 So I usually take them seals and gasket and Chuck them right in the trash!! They are absolutely useless, and I’ve never used one and didn’t have it leak..
      When I changed the impeller, I’ll clean everything with 70-90% isopropyl.. Ill rub some sil-glyde on the impeller itself and install it.. When you take the cover off- it should have a pretty defined friction pattern worked into it from the impeller spinning around.. I will apply a little clear RTV around the outer edges of the front plate, and put back on and tighten.
      I will typically leave the squeeze out be on the outside edges until it completely solidifies. You can give the pump a quick test bump to clean up any squeeze out inside where the impeller is.. You don’t want the silicone to harden inside there as it’s possible the impeller blades will bend around it after it has setup..
      Also, If your impeller has those little stupid round circles (gates) protruding on the edges of each blade.. Use a single edge razor and gingerly scrape them so they are flush with the rest of the arm and blade.. As far as the nitrile impellers, I ordered them off eBay. They were $26 each. If you have the standard Drummond pump- the impeller should be the 5/16 shaft size..
      For what you’re doing a small gear pump would last you forever!! And you could pump almost anything with that… I have a small oberdorfer 2gpm pump that got separated from its motor… It fits perfectly in my drill and I can literally pump anything through it.. You just want to be mindful of pumping anything that has particulate debris in it as it could bind up in the gears…
      That’s the nice thing about rubber impeller pumps- they can deal with that kind of thing much better… The biggest enemy of them is heat.. Never pump dry, and keep the brushes/commutator clean on the motor…

    Was thinking of using this to keep bait fish alive. One hose submerged in lake or ocean under a large bobber (keep sand from getting pumped in) pumped into cooler with drain at the bottom. Could also add a threaded plug at the bottom and use a hose to return water to the body of water. How long do you think it’d run a 12v car battery (using cold water)

    • @mikesworkshop5375
      @mikesworkshop5375  4 года назад +2

      It pulls 9.5 amps under load. So it depends on what battery you have. Like a 12v golf cart battery will last longer than a standard car battery. I'd rekon that a standard car battery would last 2 to 4 hours. If you know ur amp hours of the battery you want to use, just divide it by 9.5 and that's how many hours it will last.

    I have the pump, and am generally positive about it but...
    You absolutely cannot safely pump fuel with it. It is for clean water only.
    My impeller failed after about 10 hours total use. The manual considers using it for long periods to be "abuse". It does not define "long periods".
    The manual requires the user to lubricate the impeller prior to use, or it may fail (I didn't lubricate, it failed).
    While it claims to be self priming (and it is) the manual tells you to prime it.
    So possibly my impeller failed (broke apart) because I ran it 5 hours at a time, or because it wasn't lubricated, or because I didn't prime it. It did come with a 2nd impeller, so I'm going to try being more careful with that one and see how it goes.

    I did the math, and this one seems to be far off the rated flow rate if your test was accurate. 290 GPH should be 4.8 gallons per minute. According to your test, the results would be 2.8 gallons per minute, or 169 GPH. I just saw a review on a Milwaukee 18v transfer pump, and the actual test fell short of the rated specs as well. I just felt it should be noted that it fell short quite a bit. Thanks for the review!

      Carl, yeah so the rating is at 0 head height which is misleading because you'll never be at 0. I haven't seen the head curve for this one so can't comment on nominal use. Another factor is I stepped down the inlet to 1/2 tubing. I guess I should have made all that clear in the video and explained head height a bit. Thanks for the follow up its good info to have.

    2 gallons in 45 seconds.... math doesn’t equal 290 gallons per hour. I just want to know how well it would work with a 4 gym pressure washer. Water tote, this pump connected to 4 gym pressure washer. Anyone try yet?

      It's 290 at 0 head height. In my experience it's more like 140

      There is not much pressure behind it. About as much as a garden hose

      @@mikesworkshop5375 so if it gives Preassure same amount?as gardner hose it should work for Preassure washer?

      Yes for a small one. Look at the pressure washer and see how many gph it needs. Also this doesn't have an auto cut off which could damage the pump and the washer if ur not careful. I think in a pinch it would work but I wouldn't recommend it

      @@ygee8183, use water pump like they have in RVs. They're self-priming and have an auto on/off that switches at a certain psi.

      @Vince Mitchell hey I post these on harbor freights website too and it's against their policies to mention price in their reviews. But if you ever want to know just ask. I paid 49 for this one.
