When I ran out of Kodak Ultra Max 400 while on a trip to Colorado I only really had one option for getting more 35mm film - Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart carries Fujifilm Superia X-Tra 400 in a pack of 3 for roughly $25 USD.
I only had time left in Colorado to shoot one roll of Superia X-Tra 400, and overall I'm pleased with the film stock but not thrilled about my photos. There are a few in there that I really, really like (including the thumbnail image for this video). There's one that I would love if the camera had nailed focus - the one with the Corvette. Focus seems to be on the trees in the background instead of the vehicles. Not sure what I did there, but the cars are soft.
It's difficult to gauge the true character of this film stock with the methods I've been using to develop the film. I send my rolls to Midwest Film Co. and they use a Blackmagic Cintel Scanner to scan the images and give me a scan with a LOG profile. I have to add two LUTs to properly transform the image so it's ready for editing. From there I feel like it's a struggle to see what the shot would look like if a lab developed it and made their own judgement calls on how the scanned image should look.
Not only that, but grading in DaVinci Resolve is difficult. Obviously it's not meant to edit photos, but because the photos are scanned on the Cintel Scanner, I need the LUTs built in to Resolve to properly post-process the scans.
My good friend adapted this workflow to Capture One, but I'm waiting for this channel to get more traction and subscribers before I invest in an annual subscription. I don't subscribe to Lightroom either and that won't be changing. I don't want to to subscribe to any Adobe products.
I will say that overall I like the Kodak Ultra Max 400 images more than Fuji Superia X-Tra 400, but I need A LOT more experience shooting and editing film to really formulate my stance on these stocks.
Music for this video was mixed using Track Club's Mix Lab feature where you can custom mix certain songs to adjust the volume of specific instruments or exclude specific instruments to make your own version of the song.
Audio for this video was recorded in the locations where the photographs were taken using a combination of a Tascam DR-10L lav mic attached to me and the RØDE VideoMic NTG on my camera while recording video.
This video was edited with Final Cut Pro.

Not sure there’s a better cheap color 35mm film option than Fuji Superia X-Tra 400 at Wal-Mart for about $25 for 3 rolls. I’m glad I can always be well stocked with film this way because finding Kodak Ultra Max 400 in stock at the local Walgreens for $30 is next to impossible. I edited these photos to be a bit warmer, but I wanted to embrace the Fuji characteristics of being a bit more blue overall (and green but I don’t like my photos to push green), especially more blue in the shadows. Thanks for watching!

Been lacking motivation to get out and go shoot but this video really helped. It’s always pleasant stumbling upon photos taken locally. Helps being able to glance into another photographers eyes and seeing them shoot the same subject in an entirely different way. Lovely stuff!

Really appreciate that comment! And glad this helps to inspire you🤘I definitely have to draw inspiration from other photographers, their books, their RUclips channels, quirky cameras, shooting film for the first time in 16 years, etc. to just get out and take photos.
But the best part about it is when I go out when I don’t want to and disappear into the Flow and the Universe shows me its magic, and I’m fortunate enough to be there to 📸
The video on my channel that has the most views is the one I wanted to get out and make THE LEAST. Funny how that works…
Let me know where I can see your work! Would love to check it out.

Yup, that’s one of my favorites as well. I especially love that it’s a color photo that looks entirely black and white. Thanks for watching and commenting!
