When Landscape Photography Workshops Go Wrong...

    Pleasing people ain't easy at the best of times, but teaching a photography workshop while suffering constant camera envy is really challenging.
    I take a private photography client into the Highland to try and teach him some landscape photography tips, but he seems resistant to my teachings.
    Not only does my client Ben shoot with a Leica camera but Chris shows up with a brand new Canon R5. I'm starting to feel inadequate. The Canon R5 not only has a 'flippy screen' but it also rotates, making vertical landscape photography a breeze.
    On the other hand, the Leica doesn't even have a 'flippy screen' but that's no problem to serious artists.
    Jason demonstrates how to open a RUclips vlog like a pro while we all enjoy the sunset at some spectacular cliffs in Nova Scotia. Thankfully, Ben signed the waiver but there's no way I'm sharing my snacks.
    With all of this camera envy, I feel the need to borrow Amanda's Hasselblad but will she allow it?
    Perched atop a crumbly gypsum spire I manage to frame a rather tresmendous shot but will the light deliver the goods? What's that silly looking filter system on Chris's camera and can you safely use a Thermacell as a microphone?
    There's really only one way to find out.
    Thanks for watching

    On the R5 1st Curtain Electronic shutter or fully mechanical is way to get longer exposures. If fully electronic shutter selected then 0.5s is the max. Caught me out initially too!

  • @richardbellomy5607
    @richardbellomy5607 11 месяцев назад +56

    Electronic Shutter Mode on the R5 limits you to only .5 second whereas electronic 1st curtain or mechanical shutter settings allow you to go to 30 seconds. Just the nature of the beast...

    • @fromquake
      @fromquake 11 месяцев назад +1

      Really? That’s interesting. The R6 II goes to 30” in electronic or mechanical. Looks like the R6 MKI only does .5”. That could probably be a firmware fix on canon’s end, since the sensor readout shouldn’t be a bottleneck like on the R6, but they will probably hold it for the MKII version.

    • @user-nl5tl8fz8l
      @user-nl5tl8fz8l 11 месяцев назад +3

      I addition to the limit of 0.5 seconds, in electric shutter mode, files are only captured in 12 bit. You have to use the other 2 shutter modes to capture 14 bit files.

      Yeah a lot of mirrorless cameras limited the low end shutter speed on electronic shutter. Gotta use mechanical shutter. 😊

    • @jordanwheatley602
      @jordanwheatley602 11 месяцев назад +1

      Yep. This is it. Go electronic first curtain if you need longer exposures. Also… electronic shutter only gives you 12bit raw files, vs elec 1st curtain and mechanical are proper 14bit raw files.

    • @PhilipBallGarry
      @PhilipBallGarry 11 месяцев назад

      That's interesting. I predominantly use ES on my X-T2 and switch only to mechanical shutter where circumstances dictate it (flash sync, rolling shutter problems etc). I wonder if there's a trade off in resolution for this strategy?

    If Chris has focus bracketing turned on, that might be why the R5 won't let him set an shutter speed longer than 1/2 second. Either that or he's using electronic shutter. If he switches to mechanical shutter or electronic first curtain shutter he'll be fine up to 30 seconds or use bulb mode for exposures longer than 30 seconds. (The R5 has a timer that can be set for bulb mode.)

    Great fun group - still astounds me that Gavin doesn’t have 5 million followers… so much work goes into this , always entertaining ( naturally too ,
    Not forced ) and great teaching moments .
    1) R5 slow shutter issue answered many times - get it to mechanical or first curtain
    2) Chris - get an L-bracket and stop hanging your vertices off the ball head and changing the parallax (?) on panoramic shots and weight shift . I have two Three Legged Thing L brackets for my R/R5/R7 and the RRS one for my R3 .
    Gavin - keep it up - love the collection of characters - you found Ben from New Jersey who shoots Leica ! - now you just need to find a Pentax K1 shooter .
    Awesomeness exemplified and here’s to more great fun .

    I can see I’ve been beaten to it but, Mechanical shutter will cure the time delay issue and give you up to 30 seconds without using bulb mode. Oh and just a little hint. If you use the EV as apposed to the screen to access functions and you can access all functions that way. You can do a whole day in freezing conditions and get a fair bit of video in without any battery issues. 2 batteries,14 hrs and still time to go. Sorry Gavin 😮😊 oh, and when shooting wildlife, the if you just touch the shutter button as it’s raised from the waist, it’s fully awake by the time it gets to the eye. Please try closing the screen. You’ll love it. I was lucky enough to get mine when it first came out and, I still love it as much if not more than the first day I had it. Nothing short of amazing. Honestly, I used what ever camera I had until then and still love photography but the R5 is the camera I’d image having one day for the last 30 years plus. Keep up the good work 😊

      Or use electronic first shutter. It's just as quiet and can take long exposures. It also eliminates the vibration of the mechanical shutter, and unlike the electronic shutter it takes 14-bit images, not 12 bit! I really haven't found any benefit to using the mechanical shutter for landscape photography.
