    I’m envious of the snow!
    Last year this time, we had deep cold (-30c and colder) with heavy accumulations.
    This year it’s been unusually mild with little snowfall.
    Keep up the great content!

      Thanks! I’m looking forward to enjoying all this snow once things settle. I’m ready for a break from snowblowing and shoveling right now. I’m really liking the warm temps. 😀

    Hey good to see you back with Further Adventures of the VK! Southern Manitoba is snow starved and everyone with new sleds are making payments snow or no snow. But it will come. For now, it is easy getting firewood out of the bush with the sxs. Valuing my ‘22 VK540 even more now that they aren’t available. Maybe they will keep the VK chassis and drop in an electric rig. We’ll have to buy 2 stroke air fresheners!! Take care.

      Thanks for stopping by to check out the channel! Hopefully snow is on your way soon. I unfortunately have zero hope or any faith that Yamaha will ever do anything with snowmachines again. They could have led the transition to electric or hybrid sleds but I guess they decided to focus on their eBikes instead.
      This year has been very strange for us as it’s a strong El Niño and we’ve been buried in snow. Usually an El Niño means a low snow winter but it’s been the opposite. I’ve moved snow every day for almost three weeks now and haven’t had any chance to enjoy it. Getting everything dug out with 160” of wet, heavy snow has been a ton of work.

      It’s crazy to me as all that talk and news about El Niño, I fully expected a low snow winter like in ‘15-‘16.

    Central Caribou of B.C. Lived here 32 years and never seen anything like this Dec29 and zero snow! Overnight temps sometimes not even below freezing. Ice fishing? I think I might launch my boat tomorrow!!!!!

      In ‘02-‘03 we had an El Nino winter and it was warm, it’d snow a little then rain, repeat. It wasn’t until New Years did we get a big dump of snow and things started looking more normal. But from ‘15 through the winter of ‘18-‘19 we a series of low snow winters. ‘15-‘16 was the worst, creeks wouldn’t freeze up, low snow, that was also influenced by El Niño. I was shocked we received as much snow as we have seeing how we’re in another El Niño. I fully expected a lot snow winter. Today is the first day in three weeks straight I’ve not shoveled or snow blowed and I still have things to dig out but wanted to take a break.
      I’ve been looking at photos, news stories and videos of the lower 48 and it’s pretty crazy to see how little snow there is. I’m reading about ice fishing houses falling through the ice, no snow in most places and ski resorts laying people off. Our temps have also been warmer than normal but I don’t mind as it’s generally right below freezing and my heating fuel bill isn’t as high.

    Good Morning! Excellent Video! the VK540 is looking and running amazing also. I want to bounce a question i have been pondering and one that maybe several other VK540 owners may have also. It is in regards to the addition of an aftermarket Primer Plunger for serious cold starting in subzero temperatures.
    I was wondering if you have gave it any thought and if there were any reasons you have or have not considered installing one.
    A good system with pure brass T fitting and Tygon fuel line seem to add a positive to reducing wear and tear on starting components and aiding in the start itself. was wondering for some opinions on this topic or maybe a video idea who knows?

      Sorry for the very late reply, YT never notified me about your comment. I don’t know why that occurs from time to time? 🤷‍♂️ Years and years ago I installed a primer kit on one of my Ski-doo’s. They had a factory kit with plastic fittings, plunger and fuel pump. It worked great, much better than a choke. Plus the carb already had the barb present so it was just a matter of slipping the hose on. A true plug and play, very nice. I much prefer primers over chokes but I’ve not experienced issues starting the VK so I’ve not looked into it.
      There are downsides to primers, it’s really easy to flood your motor if you don’t have a good feel for how much gas to inject and the plunger will eventually leak. Plus the hoses and fittings are another potential source of a gas leak. If it’s really cold where you are at a primer can’t be beat. But with e-start on the VK and me living in a coastal climate sparing me from super low temps I’ve not looked into installing one.

    Great video again! So you are basicly my references in terms of VK problems and solution. Last year my season ended up quicker than expected and was force to use some regular gas. When i sotred the snowmobile i had around half of the tank full of regular 86 gas. This fall i tried to start the snowmobile but it would not start. Or it would start but would not hold the idle even with some choke ON. What would you recommend to do ? (Right know i changed the spark plug because they were all wet and i empty the gas tank to put some new gas in it, 92-93. Would you recommend to empty or clean the carburator as well or to use any kind of product to help it.

      Thanks! 😄 Does your gasoline contain ethanol? We don’t have that where I live but I’ve read about the issues it can cause. If it were mine I’d remove the 17mm head drain plug from the bottom of the carb to drain it. Look at the inside of the drain plug to see if it’s clean or has a bunch of crud in it. If it’s clean refill the tank with fresh gas and after the fuel pump gets prime (extended cranking or pulling it over) it should fire up and run normally.
      If your drain plug has crud in it you should remove the carb, the remove the float bowl using a JIS type screw driver so you don’t strip out the 4 float bowl screws. If you are careful and take time to find a bit or screwdriver that fits snugly that’ll work too but a Japanese type screw driver is much better. Then just look at the jets and openings and clean them out and put it all back together. I doubt you’ll need to do all that. I’ve had good luck with pouring Seafoam into the tank and having it mix with gas and then just riding the machine around. I did that with a 2-stroke dirt bike a few summers ago that was in storage for a years and didn’t t run well. The Seafoam cleaned out the BRP carb and it ran fine after I rode around for 20 minutes. For that bike I poured a whole bottle into a 5 gallon gas can of pre-mix.
      You should be able to get your VK up and running again without too much trouble. 👍

      @@thatalaskaguy quick update, I emptied the tank, and manage to remove the drain plug of the carburator. Result: no fuel came out of the carburator. I tried adding some fuel (about 2Liters) and pulling the starter cord to bring some fuel to the carburator but nothing came out of the drain valve. I guess something is stuck or wrong in the carburetor, I will remove it this weekend and clean it

      @@simongohier-st-jean2670 Sounds like you just need to turn the engine over for a longer period of time for the fuel pump to pick up prime again. A quicker, easier way is to remove the spark plugs and pour a few drops of pre-mix down into each cylinder, reinstall the plugs and restart. The engine will briefly run on that small amount of pre-mix and get gas flowing to the carb more quickly. Don’t use straight gas, it needs to be pre-mix. You can also just keep pulling the sled over and it’ll eventually start pumping fuel. Running the e-start makes it was easier. One more option is to gently pressurize the gas tank with air, that’ll push the gas into the fuel lines and to the carb.
      Make sure to reinstall your drain plug before you do any of the above! 😄

    Hey do you have any experience with the two front suspension straps? I’m finding my VK light on the skis…turns when I let off the throttle but on tight bush trails its really hard to maneuver soon as I accelerate…just doesn’t turn unless I really throw my weight around.

    • @thatalaskaguy
      @thatalaskaguy  9 месяцев назад

      I don’t know if it’s my snow conditions or that I’ve been riding my other sleds more lately but I’m really noticing the front end push of my VK this year. My VK never turned sharply anyway but it seems like it’s been pushing more than usual this season. I’ve not done anything to try and correct it but you can stiffen the rear springs which will tilt the sled slightly forward and put more weight on the skis. That’s the quickest, easiest thing to try. Second you can put a 2x4 under the front of the track so the front arm is partially collapsed. That’ll provide some slack in the limiter straps so the bolts can be loosened and moved to the next tightest hole. That’ll pull the front of the track upwards and put more weight on the skis. It’ll turn better but will also steer a little harder as well. The nice thing is any of these adjustments are reversible and free so give it a shot and see if they improve things to your liking.

    • @normneufeld9688
      @normneufeld9688 9 месяцев назад

      Thanks, good thoughts. I think that pulling a loaded sleigh also is causing difficult control of the front end. I love the sled but my wife struggles to maneuver it. Need a power steering kit of some sort. @@thatalaskaguy

    • @thatalaskaguy
      @thatalaskaguy  9 месяцев назад

      @normneufeld9688 I didn’t realize you were towing, that’ll definitely take weight off the skis. In your situation I’d shorten the limiter straps one hole and see how it does. The VK is a big heavy sled so I doubt it’ll ever be easy for your wife to ride, depending on the snow conditions. You could look into installing wider handlebars for additional leverage to help reduce turning effort. The biggest hassle with that is removing and reinstalling the hot grips without damaging them. If you are riding double while towing it’d be a good idea to increase the preload on the rear springs as well.
