Grounding activities are an essential skill for managing anxiety, stress, and PTSD, as well as for improving mental health.
Visualizing a safe place can be an essential technique for grounding the body and mind. When stress, anxiety, or panic seem to be taking over, we can actually trigger our nervous system to respond by calming the body and mind through "perceived safety."
By bringing to mind your safe space, your favorite environment, or your comfort zone, you can actually reverse the stress response.
This is an essential coping skill for managing anxiety, panic, and PTSD.

The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.

I've watched this twice tonight (for the first time), and I cried both times. I didn't know what my safe space was so I just picked a place where I am most happy, my friends house. I imagine sitting with her, seeing her cat, and just being present together. Maybe you have a place like that, where you felt happy once? The room I use isn't meaningful as such, just the things in it. Hope that helps :)

I'm 26 and have only recently began to feel protective/ masculine/ manly sometimes. I'm realizing that before that, during childhood no one was ever there to keep me safe or care about me in the way that they should. I was always abused instead or just not payed attention to. So it is understandable that I would feel anxious at times now, since I'm living with my mom who couldn't have hurt me any worse and traumatized me away from myself. But I'm thankful now to know I am strong on the inside and can preserver through and reach my higher self despite the difficult surroundings, which is really incredible.

I remember being at my Nana's place in the evening when the tide had come in on the rocky cliff where her house was high on the bluff overlooking the ocean. I was playing with my white china toy horses wondering if I could still find the path up to the house. I knew my time was running out as the waves crashed around my feet as the rock face warmed the water. I was pushing boundaries but I felt secure that my higher power would not let me drown. It was a safe, warm feeling so I made up a song about nightfall, as it was getting dark & I could hear my name being frantically called. I made it up the path with my toys all safe & sound. Funny I can still remember the words & tune to that song! I can still see the whole thing in my memory. I shall make sure I don't forget it again. I felt invincible.

Coming from someone who doesn’t have access to this kind of resource, mainly due to not knowing who to talk to or not having the insurance that can cover it, I can say without a doubt these free videos are needed, and they are helpful. This has been the most helpful video I’ve watched so far. I’ve learned about the body scan before but I think the safe space was new for me. I was amazed at how easy I was able to calm down a bit from bodily stress I’ve been dealing with this past weekend just by imagining my happy place. For me it was a concert seen my favorite artist with my best friends. I think it worked well because it was a fresh memory. It was my first concert Since the pandemic started.

Paraphrasing (at best) the trigger: Take your safe place with you for your safe space is actually within you and not some place outside of you. You create/fabricate the dangers, you can also create a place within yourself where the imagined is tamed enough to be relegated to zero real importance in ones life.

No such thing as a confidant place.
Also, a safe place is actually a hiding place.
People with anger, fear, stress, anxiety, insecurities, resentment, etc…hide there.
They don’t know how to overcome so they become copers and supposed survivors all their life.
It’s basically living life with a victim mentality.
Always blaming everyone else for everything.
You want to overcome the anger.
This is the ONLY way you can be free, so free you will not even be able to remember or even describe what anxiety felt like!

I sobbed through this video. My space space is back home, which is halfway across the country. I miss it so fucking much.

thank you so much for this Emma🫶🏼 i use this video regularly when i’m triggered by something and am comforted by the knowledge that i can come here whenever i need to. I have PTSD so frequently feel unsafe and like i’m being assaulted over and over again, i can’t thank you enough for helping me to recognise that my body is a safe place to be🥹🩵🩵

You have a soothing voice, and the suggestions in the guidance was helpful, but I found the pace overall to be a bit fast for me.

Why is the lamp like that? The spots are distracting.
Puppy was great. Voice was great, very grounding. Great sense of calm.

Aloha Emma, I love all of your videos you have so many good ideas and suggestion and I think they are very good ideas and I thank you so much for posting all of these on RUclips. I would like to know what you would recommend I have anxiety but my biggest problem is is that I don’t sleep at night because I have anxiety when I am trying to fall asleep and have tried many different medications and supplements and essential oil’s but I think retraining my brain somehow when I’m trying to sleep is probably the answer. I look forward to hearing what you would recommend that I do. Thank you so much!
