  • Even if you only consider the Porsche 911 segment of the restomod market, there is still a fascinating variety in the approaches taken to create something special. For example, both Gunther Werks (based in sunny California) and Paul Stephens Autoart (based in occasionally sunny Essex) use the last of the air-cooled 911s, the 993, as the basis for their creations. But place the end results next to each other and they could hardly be more different.
    The West Coast car is almost cartoonish with its fantastically big arches and monster wheels. Meanwhile, most people would walk past the narrow-bodied Autoart 993R without realising the money and time that had been poured into it. Both, however, have their attractions.
    The customer behind the 993R simply requested a 993 that had been improved by 25 per cent in every area and the result is certainly compelling when you drive it. With 330bhp from a 3.8-litre flat-six pushing around just 1220kg, there is more than adequate performance. But despite being lighter and more potent than a factory 993 RS, this 993R still feels nicely useable. Yes there are fixed-back Recaro Pole Position bucket seats and the windows have to be wound up and down manually, but it doesn’t feel race car raw.
    Despite this particular car being a development prototype, it also felt incredibly well put together and dynamically impressively resolved. You might think it should be, being a Porsche, but that is to miss the fact that it has been completely stripped, with no bit of the body left untouched and every panel replaced in the interior. The end result is certainly at the subtle end of the 911 restomod spectrum, but as you can see from the video, it is perhaps all the more appealing for that, with lots for the Porsche aficionado to appreciate.

    I have an odd personal connection with this car. This builder built virtually the same car as my NSX but in a 993 chassis. Everything down to the same power-to-weight ratio, same 6spd ratio+wavetrac, same recaro seats, and many other subtle touches. It was oddly cool and can confirm the formula works!

    Thats lovely but speaking as a woman who has drove a real 1973 Porsche 911 2.7 RS , you will never ever experience a car that much fun ever again , It is the best track car I've drove , the best road car for village lanes I've drove , problem is I could not afford it even 20 years ago it cost over £100 grand , now its 10 times that amount , I drove also an Original Porsche 911 Turbo from the late 70s and honestly i did not enjoy it as much , why ? Because 2 things first huge turbo lag , literally it would take like 10 seconds before that turbo kicks in if you were in the wrong gear and revs were too low and secondly it weighed a lot more than the 911 RS and was very very scary in tight corners as the back end would have a bad habit of wanting to step out , anyway Amazing review glad to see a Restored modern classic 911.

    @Carfection - Henry, correct me if I'm wrong... But, no matter how many times you say "Prototipo" (Momo) in this video, that wheel will never become one! 😜
    I mean, sure the owner could have had it re-trimmed to add the 'Stripe' that a 'Prototipo' doesn't usually sport in stock form... However, the dish on that wheel leads me to believe it is much more likely the Momo Mod.07 wheel. I figure you have driven enough cool Porsches to have seen plenty of both options by now..

    Nice review. I also am not generally keen on resto-mod 911's. However the subtle design changes here along with a duck-tail really do appeal to me. Love the interior, looks perfect. I don't mind the wheels at all, certainly many resto mods (other than Ruf) have cocked up the wheel choices badly. As this is a street car, the little ear mirrors are not useful in real world suburban driving. I think the period correct aero mirrors would look just fine. The exhaust tip design should be thought through and kept near to the 1995 993 oval or the later 96-98 squarish style.

      The thing is, there are so many 911s out there (at least, in comparison to other legendary-status sports cars) that at the end of the day, unless you're starting with a super rare spec, it's not like you're losing some super valuable historical artifact. I mean, just look at the highest-profile restomodder, Singer. How many Singers have been made, a few dozen? And look how many 964s were made in total by Porsche. Frankly, I love the 964, but a base one in the condition most are in when they're sent to Singer isn't really anything worth keeping stock.

      @camerone397 Год назад +2

      @@emailandydean Lol, nobody buys air-cooled Porsches on Autotrader. Don't believe me, just look at the production numbers. Porsche made 62k 964s in total, including over 18k C2 coupes and 13k C4 coupes. It's fair to assume that 90% of those are still driving because they get babied, they hold their value, and they don't rust badly. That's at least 27k coupes still out there, by my count. It's not a rare car. Obviously a Camry is more common, but that's apples to oranges. For the kind of car it is, that's a pretty decent number. You take one and restomod it, and it's not like you're modifying a 1 of 1000 car, which is my point. For every restomodded 964, there are probably a hundred stock 964 coupes.

    The Singers of the 911 world always gave me weird vibes. Like yes, it IS the perfect 911 to me, at least on paper. I should love it, right? But it also feels a bit wrong to me in a way. It's too idealistic and I feel like it almost compromises the charm of the 911. In my mind, the perfect 911 build would be a combo of various 80s/90s parts. Maybe a 964 Turbo widebody shell (but without the wing) with a built 3.8L 993 RS motor, 6-speed RWD gearbox with the LSD, 964 RS seats, 968 CS steering wheel, a short-throw shifter, 993 Turbo brakes, and BBS LMs. Oh, and rotate the gauges, but keep the numbers pointing the wrong way.

    Now, could you build this for less than 400k? Only if you do it all yourself.
    You might be able to find a Porsche garage who could do the WORK for maybe 150-200k, but then you would spend the time equivalent of 200k on managing said work/specifing the details, least you get only half your vision. I don't know about these 911 restomods, seems like a compromise from both a styling and driving aspect. I think I'd be way happier in a 991 GT3 touring that revs to 9k, try that in your restomod.

    I'm a 911 fan, especially the latest turbo S, but this car, to me, sits too low or the wheels sit too high in the wheel arches, almost like the suspension has collapsed...

    I understand the appeal of restomods but, I’d much rather own a car that can deteriorate from hard use. This means a mechanically sound old car modified for street and track use, not a plush mega money one off.

      Good points. Something is lost with the resto-mods but then on the other hand, the car may have been junked for good, if there was no resto.
