  • This is my daily warm up for singing! I don't do any scales or traditional warm ups to piano tracks. Instead, I do vocal exercises over songs. The reason for this is because I find that it's more fun to do, and also that practicing exercises over songs is directly practicing the correct placements/mouth shapes in the exact way you will be doing them while singing. This makes it really easy to transfer these habits to singing, instead of learning these techniques over scales, and trying to translate that to singing songs. A lot of our old and unhelpful singing habits really stick around the moment we go into Singing Songs mode, so doing these exercises over songs really starts to kick those old habits to the curb very quickly.

As I mentioned in the beginning of the video, I no longer do breathing exercises as a warm up. I did for several months as I was learning diaphragm breathing, but it became so ingrained in me that I no longer needed to (just as I no longer need to do the Mixed Voice "Nay" exercise, though I sometimes throw it into my daily practice just for kicks.) The main thing I need to work on with breathing is remembering to do so xD

This is brilliant! I just tried your warm-up technique out on a couple of songs I've been struggling with and it really helped to keep me from straining on the more challenging sections. Thank you so much! 🙌

I have been waiting for this video!!! I hope you also make a video on how to sing songs on a vowel. It’s so hard to do. I have watched your videos and even Happy Birthday is hard on most vowels 😢

  • @caityvalentine

Can you please do a video about exhaling properly? You mentioned some singer's tendency to let out all of their air on the first note. I would love your take on this!
